’d say it’s been a busy week, but I think it’s just been a busy year. These pages are all the evidence I need. While the LOOKatOKC team was putting the finishing touches on this issue, I was working on a story about the 15th anniversary of a venue I’ve been going to for the better part of my concertgoing years. The Opolis in Norman has been a lot of things to a lot of people, and I sat down with co-owners/operators Andy and Marian Nunez to discuss the twisty path that led to the upcoming anniversary concert celebration running Sept. 7-9. Look for that story in the next issue of LOOKatOKC. I reached out to a few artists that frequently perform at the venue, and I just had to share this account from Okie songwriter Beau Jennings: “At The Opolis I’ve played

shows, rehearsed with my band, worked the door, made lifelong friends, snuck in flasks, ordered scones for breakfast and hot wings for dinner, nervously talked to girls, discussed life-altering decisions, cried, said prayers, crashed my bike, told NATHAN POPPE LOOKatOKC EDITOR lies, witnessed heroes, NPOPPE@OKLAHOMAN.COM escorted a bombing comedian off stage, cheered football games, attended Christmas parties and weddings and wakes, wafted through smoke and fog, watched lightning storms from the patio, and met my wife. “There is really only one word to describe a place that can house such an array of life experiences and that would be home.” To a lot of musicians, it’s more than just a venue. I’ve gotta go finish that story now, but I hope you’ll enjoy this issue until then. As always, thanks for reading, and I hope the wait for your restaurant table goes quickly.

re the otters ready for their close-ups? Cameras were rolling on the set of “Whaling,” and it was time for the critters to shoot their scenes in Frontier City’s parking lot. The Oklahoma City theme park was one of several locations hosting the upcoming film, which also visited Guthrie, Catoosa, Wynnewood and Tulsa during its dozen days of shooting. But on Aug. 3, Oklahoma’s Extreme Animals caretakers delivered a couple of otters to a vintage ’80s Winnebago RV, a perfect spot to escape the sizzling sun hanging over the makeshift backlot. The scene’s a pivotal moment in the movie when siblings Brandon (Tom Felton, of Draco Malfoy and “Harry Potter” fame) and Star (Tammin Sursok, “Pretty Little Liars”) pause their Midwest road trip to help some animals in need. The film’s plot revolves around the duo delivering the ashes of a family member to a final resting place, and a portion of the movie’s set in Oklahoma. Because crews were tucked away in the corner of a massive blacktop, you could enter the park without even noticing the camera crew. It was business as usual as screams roared from roller coaster rides. Inside of a trailer, I sat with Sursok while Okie makeup artist Sharon Tabb made some adjustments for the otter scene. The actress’ eyes were closed, but she was quick to share her vision for “Whaling” and an appreciation for Oklahoma. “At first glance, it can seem like a cowboy town, but it’s really not,” she said. “There’s an underground pulse of art and artistic people. A culinary scene. A coffee scene. I didn’t know what I was going to expect. I’ve fallen in love with the people.” Los Angeles is so frenetic, and here you can breathe, she added. Felton was no stranger to Oklahoma City either. He visited R&J Lounge and Supper Club and

She dumped out a Thermos and all these random things from her purse.” She ordered a beer from a flight attendant and didn’t waste time befriending other passengers. McEwen said he imagined telling this stranger’s story, and “Whaling” grew from there. The script developed slowly between Sursok and McEwen’s TV and movie projects. After all these years, Sursok said the timing still felt right. “It’s a universal theme of family and finding yourself,” she said. “To understand things from another’s point of view. I think it’s relevant. Even in Sean and my’s life because I’ve just become a mother. My character is a mother. When we wrote it, I wasn’t a

mother. I have a lot more to draw from now that I’ve had that experience of raising a child. It’s definitely solidified the role for me.” McEwen said the film would tour the film festival circuit once it’s completed and mentioned Oklahoma’s deadCenter Film Festival as a possibility.

OKLAHOMA HOSPITALITY McEwen’s Midwestern roots also drove the production to Oklahoma, a move that qualified the film for the Oklahoma Film Enhancement Rebate. The incentive provides rebates to filmmakers amounting to roughly $1 for every $3 they spend on production in Oklahoma. The rebate now caps out at $4 million annually, which is $1 million less than last year. That reduction was signed into law in May. McEwen said Oklahoma’s rebate is helpful in offsetting the costs of shooting outside of Los Angeles and supports the ability to make a film come alive.

“I actually grew in Missouri and had the opportunity to shoot a movie there years ago when they did have an incentive program, which no longer exists,” McEwen said. “It’s really sad that I can’t take advantage of my home state and the wonderful people and crew there.” But Oklahoma’s film community surprised McEwen, even after hearing positive word-of-mouth. “Everything has been a home run,” he said. “Everything to the crews, the people and the hospitality. You hear about it but to actually see it manifested in front of you is incredible.” Earlier in the day, he was speaking with the Oklahoma Film and Music Office and mentioned a conversation he had with another producer based in Los Angeles. “I told him, ‘You guys have to stop everything and look at Oklahoma,’ ” he said. “That’s not just me saying that because I’m speaking to you. That’s the truth. They’re excited to consider it because Oklahoma has so much to offer.”

‘BEAR’

Oklahoma-raised Kevin Costello digs deep with new dramedy BY NATHAN POPPE LOOKatOKC Editor

evin Costello admitted it was weird to be paid as a writer in Hollywood but not have anything concrete to show for it. After a few years, that finally changed when "Brigsby Bear" hit theaters in July. The Sundance Film Festival applauded effort also landed in Oklahoma, which was home to Costello during several of his formative years, high school and college at the University of Oklahoma. He's since relocated to California, for a second time. The roots of "Brigsby" actually begin at a San Diego middle school. That's where Costello befriended "Saturday Night Live's" Kyle Mooney and director Dave McCary. Fast forward to 2013 and you'd find Mooney reuniting with Costello to collaborate on a screenplay about a child who gets kidnapped, brainwashed by an alleged Canadian public access TV show made specifically for him and gets suddenly reintroduced into society decades later as a 20-something with a worldview shaped by what resembles a Chuck E. Cheese animatronic band member. That's the premise for "Brigsby Bear," a film that presents a pop culture obsession

Mooney’s performance transcends simple nerdom and is so endearing, which absolutely helps the movie stick its landing. James figured Brigsby was the singular source for

escape from his cocoon-like existence in an underground bunker. His home is the kind of place where you’re required to strap on a gas mask before you tie your shoes to go outside. As unique as James’ lifestyle is before he rejoins society to awkwardly encounter his real family, there’s plenty to relate with. His transition looks a lot like adulthood. And below the surface of “Brigsby Bear” is a beautiful narrative about the power of creativity and storytelling. I called Costello to talk about the film and how he shaped the story.

Q:

Did you have an any fanboy obsessions growing up? Kevin Costello: I would watch “Star Wars” over and over. There’s a lot of overt and subtle “Star Wars” inclusions in “Brigsby.” That was definitely a big one. I also was really into “The Dark Crystal.” The Jim Henson movie. I loved everything about that. It was super scary and weird to me. .... Movies were SEE Q&A, 9

Q:

There’s two Kevin Costellos on the Internet Movie Database. One says you worked on a 2008 movie called “The Stanton Family Grave Robbery.” Was that a local production?

This image released by Sony Pictures Classics shows Mark Hamill, left, and Kyle Mooney in a scene from “Brigsby Bear.” [PHOTOS BY SONY PICTURES CLASSICS/AP]

Costello: I don’t know why there’s two different Kevin Costellos. I’m sure there’s a way to fix that. I met Mark Potts in college. He’s a good friend. We graduated from OU together. He had a script called “The Stanton Family Grave Robbery,” and brought it to me. I did some work on one of the characters in part of the script. He generously gave me co-writing credit on it. I think we won some kind of scholarship, some sort of OU screenwriting award. If I remember correctly, it was because nobody else turned anything in. ... I acted in it. Badly. We just did with what we had available. ... That spirit of DIY and how it can bond and heal people is all very directly related to that experience.

cynical or dark just for dark’s sake. It’s reflective of the way we actually feel. ... Just the sweetness of the character, his idealism and optimism; that guided us.

Q:

Mooney’s working on “SNL” frequently. What did writing this screenplay over the course of three years look like? Costello: It was a lot of sitting in the room together, and I feel like that’s when the writing was the best, fastest and messiest. There’d be pockets throughout the year where he could come back, and he would stay at my house, in my guest room. We would wake up and write all day, basically. When he was gone, I could take what we had and mold it into a more finished, polished screenplay. I’d add new ideas or do a first pass at a new scene. Get it ready so the next time Kyle would come over we’d have new stuff to go over. He’d inhibit the character, try it out and work through dialogue. A lot of it was like improv, bouncing dialogue back and forth. ... It was great because I would lose steam then be able to almost hit a reset button and get Kyle on it. It was always picking up pieces and putting them back together.

Q:

fine line between serious and silly. How’d you find a balance?

The film struck me as an allegory to pursue what you love. How does that fit into your vision for the film?

Costello: The easiest thing to do was letting it get dark. The tone developed organically, but we knew that we needed to pay service to the inherent darkness in this concept. We just can’t whitewash over it. ... There’s different forces at play. We wanted to let those themes breathe. Kyle (Mooney) and I lean toward the idea of art and the way it can permeate and transform your reality. ... We really wanted to let the themes speak and not really be

Costello: For someone who needs the tools to dream and escape, that’s as necessary as oxygen. In thinking of “Brigsby Bear,” it’s not even about letting go of this character or this show. Brigsby is more representative of the entire idea of narrative and the entire idea of storytelling. ... It can be a refuge or a way to make sense of reality by telling your own story, ordering your brain and dealing with trauma. So, you can move forward in life.

ust a month after the opening of The Jones Assembly, co-owner Graham Colton is amazed at the success of the restaurant, bar and music venue. The converted warehouse at 901 W Sheridan Ave. is surrounded by construction and torn-up streets. But business is brisk. And the music stage started with a sellout crowd 1,672 fans filling the assembly for a Wallflowers concert. “We are beyond excited and couldn’t be happier,” Colton said. “The response for lunch to dinner to happy hour to brunch and our concerts is at full capacity.” The success wasn’t without some effort taken by Colton and his partners, Brian Bogert and Brittany Sanger, to overcome the obstacles presented by being in the middle of a construction site. They worked with owners of the nearby Paramount Building, Film Row developer Chip Fudge and others on parking arrangements and communicating on special events and concerts. “We just try to make our guests feel comfortable,” Colton said. “We’re offering them free valet. These are just things we knew we would need to deal with.” The Jones Assembly and the neighboring 21c Museum Hotel are at the heart of a dramatic transformation underway along the west fringe of downtown. In just a matter of months, a four-story building consisting of retail, apartments and structured parking has risen up to the east of The Jones Assembly. Another garage has topped out at the southwest corner of Sheridan Avenue and Classen Boulevard. Foundation work is underway for apartments between the garage on Sheridan Avenue and The Jones Assembly. Along Main Street, north of the 21c Museum Hotel, a garage is being built that will be part of even more apartments and retail. development will add 345 apartments and 16,000 square feet of retail to Film Row, completing its transformation from a blighted, desolate area to becoming one of downtown’s hot spots. West Village is being developed by Andy Burnett, Mark Beffort and Hall Capital, which also backed development of The Jones Assembly and renovation of the historic century-old Ford Model T assembly plant into the hotel. Burnett sees Fred Jones Boulevard between Main and Sheridan becoming a vibrant urban corridor draped with vintage-style Edison light bulb strings

“What Graham, Brian and Brittany have accomplished at The Jones Assembly feels like New York to me — it feels like a big-league city,” Burnett said. “I went to the Wallflowers concert, and I loved seeing the tremendous mix of different people. And everyone seems excited to have a venue like this in our city.” The four-story building rising up at the northeast corner of Fred Jones Boulevard and Sheridan Avenue will be lined with storefronts fronting a two-story garage. Mary Eddy’s and the 21c Museum Hotel. “It will look like Main Street Americana,” Burnett said. “North of the corner, we will have a four-story clubhouse that will have Ping-Pong, a spin studio, yoga and a gym.” Burnett is hoping to anchor the building with a combination coffee shop and bookshop. But he is not interested in filling up the remaining commercial space with restaurants, citing an abundance of restaurants that have opened downtown. Some national retailers expressing interest in West Village have been rebuffed as Burnett seeks to curate a local vibe for the development. That effort, he said, has included meetings with retailers, musicians and artists. “We’re trying to find the right mix,” Burnett said. “We want to find a retail mix that fits in the area. We want it locally owned. We want a 24/7 neighborhood with amenities for people coming downtown. We’re trying to curate culture-creating retail.” Burnett said the contractor, CMS Willowbrook, has managed to stay on schedule, even slightly ahead of schedule, despite an unexpectedly rainy August. The garage at Sheridan and Classen will be the first part of the development to be completed and is set to open in October. The first apartments should be completed by fall 2018, with completion of the entire development in early 2019. Colton is bracing for more surprises ahead as the area evolves. “We made a big bet on the city, and the city has proven it will support an ambitious, forward-looking project like this,” Colton said. “But we didn’t know how the first concert would go, or the first, or even the fourth or fifth. We don’t know how everything will go during football season or Thunder season. We’re still on our maiden voyage.” Meanwhile, Colton is enjoying watching West Village rise up around his new hot spot. “It’s really fun to see these buildings going up,” Colton said. “To see these renderings that had us excited coming to life is pretty incredible.” Burnett is quick to credit the Hall family for making the vision become a reality. The heirs of longtime car dealer and manufacturer Fred Jones declined several developer pitches for their assembly plant before joining up with Kentucky-based 21c Museum Hotels and then coming up with a master plan for their surrounding surface parking lots and properties. “We’re looking at more than $120 million being spent on these six blocks,” Burnett said. “You can change the look and feel of an area with that kind of investment. And that goes back to the commitment of Hall Capital to the neighborhood.”

things to know about the new Haniwa album

BY NATHAN POPPE LOOKatOKC Editor

Haniwa began its newest album with a little nonsense. Back in 2015, the Oklahoma City-based band tracked a two-song demo to feel out a newer, fuller sound. Guitarist and singer Shirley Sanders picked a weird name for the new recordings, “Ennui Volts.” It’s an anagram of IN CONCERT the band’s 2017 effort Haniwa at the Sunset “Violent Sun,” which was Cassette Music Series self-released on Aug. 18. Dylan Walling (keyboard and vocals), With: The Ivy Shirley Sanders (guitar When: 8 p.m. Sept. 17 and vocals), Shawn Where: Tree & Leaf Stafford (guitar), Jake Clothing Co., 1705 NW 16 Jones (drums) and Tyco Holloway (bass) fill the Admission: Free band’s current lineup. The album highlight and live standout “Feels” was co-written by Sanders and Stafford. “Shawn had this driving guitar part and some lyrics about wondering if you’re schizophrenic, and if not, how do we reconcile thoughts and reality?” Sanders told LOOKatOKC. “He kept singing, ‘Feel it with me now, feel it with me now.’ I echoed that idea in the verse. It appears as though the ‘she’ in the song could be a lover, but really ‘she’ is another me, under the surface. “We’ve all dealt with mental illness in some form, and it’s terribly isolating. Sometimes we desperately need someone to come to our level and ‘feel’ what we’re feeling.” Recording “Violent Sun” was a time-consuming process for the band, and there were a lot of false starts. An early version was scrapped almost entirely before Haniwa focused on refining its live show. “We had five months of nonstop playing, saying

PAGE 12

SEPTEMBER 7–20, 2017

yes to every show opportunity and playing three or four nights a week sometimes,” Sanders said. “Our shows got better, more powerful and dynamic. It was exhausting, but when we went back to record again, we were obviously a lot tighter and more comfortable as a five-piece. It was a huge relief.” The band collaborated with recording engineer Caleb Gray and worked on the album at ACM@UCO in downtown Oklahoma City. Kevin Lively mastered the effort. “(Gray) was a lifesaver,” Sanders said. “He worked very hard to get our vision across and was absolutely wonderful to work with.” To celebrate the new release, here’s a few notes from Sanders about the creation of Haniwa’s new album.

Haniwa’s “Violent Sun” was recorded alongside recording engineer Caleb Gray at ACM@UCO in downtown Oklahoma City. [IMAGE PROVIDED]

1. The title “Violent Sun” is drawn from themes of love and betrayal. It digs into the dual nature of the sun being both beneficial and destructive. Can’t live with it and can’t live without out. 2. Unintentionally, the lyrics of the song “Dodecahedron” make up three stanzas, each with twelve lines. Sanders developed a fondness for the shape after reading “The Phantom Tollbooth” as a kid and has read a theory that says the shape of the universe is a dodecahedron. The track is about seeking a home for a complicated relationship and realizing that place doesn’t exist.

Haniwa [PHOTO PROVIDED BY QUIT NGUYEN]

3. The album starts out with this ambient space roar. Walling crafted the sound from scratch, emulating the sound of the sun because NASA has the actual sound copyrighted. At the beginning of another track, you can hear birds singing, but it’s a synth sound, too.

5. Sanders hopes “Violent Sun” gives the band a boost outside of Oklahoma and helps them develop a following at home, too.

4. “Mecanique” is the most collaborative track on

“Oklahoma City has so many wonderful artists who don’t have a ‘home’ for their genre,” Sanders said. “We like to support others like us.”

the album and the last song completed for “Violent

Sun.” Stafford started the tune off with a bare guitar riff. Sanders threw out some vocal lines inspired by the idea of communicating as machines instead of people, and Walling finished the lyrics.

Once upon a time, Nesrine Hussein lived in Cairo, Egypt, married to a successful engineer — motherhood just around the corner. This was the life she always wanted. She looked forward to traditional Egyptian family life, but a funny thing happened on the way to “happily ever after.” Fast-forward 11 years, and you’ll find Nesrine and her husband, Mohamed, operating Yummy Mummy, 13415 N Pennsylvania Ave., a fast-casual Egyptian restaurant introducing northwest Oklahoma City to the dazzling flavors of their homeland. As delicious as their food is, their story is divine. While Yummy Mummy offers familiar foods in distinctive dress even the most discerning palates would welcome, its success comes despite unique obstacles that likely would’ve stopped most folks from ever getting started. A MATTER OF FATE Mohamed Hussein was an engineer who did contract work in the energy sector across the Middle East back in 2006. A successful run with Halliburton got him a job offer with the company in the

Page 14

U.S. that he politely turned down. Enter fate. “The same week I got the offer, I was notified I’d been selected in the lottery for a visa,” he said. Fate didn’t have to hit Hussein over the head with another sign this obvious. The Husseins were headed west, namely Oklahoma City. As if moving from Cairo to Oklahoma City wasn’t challenge enough, an unforeseen pay cut left him faced with new realities. “I didn’t know about taxes,” Hussein joked. “There were no taxes on what I made in the Middle East. When I moved here, my pay didn’t change, but now we had to start paying taxes.” That shock was mild compared to the stark vocabulary lesson he learned after a couple of co-workers quit showing up at the office. “You know what word I learned here? ‘Layoff’ ” Hussein joked. “I’d never even heard of that word until I moved here. Now, I know it well.” As oil and gas prices plunged, it took co-workers and roughly 70 percent of his salary with them. Instead of panicking, Hussein took action, but the inspiration for it came

from an unlikely place. “You know the show ‘Shark Tank?’ That’s where I got the idea to open this place,” he said. “Watching this show changed everything. I realized I don’t have to concentrate all of my time working for others. I can concentrate on my own business and making my own money.” Hussein’s a bright guy. Not only does he remain a full-time engineer, he also earned his MBA in May. But in his own words, he’s no genius. “I don’t have the ability to invent a machine or develop new technology,” he said, explaining his post–“Shark Tank” mentality. “The only thing I could think of was my wife’s cooking.” HOMEMADE QUALITY To explain how he thought immediately of his wife’s cooking, Mohamed Hussein likes to tell the story of a simple family dinner. “In Egypt, the mother is the best cook,” he explained. “It doesn’t matter, the mother is the best. Period. “So, we were having dinner with my parents. My wife had made a very traditional meal. My mother turns to me and says, ‘This is really good.’ I said to my

mother, ‘You make this dish all the time.’ But she said, ‘Not like this.’ ” Hussein explained how his wife’s family is renowned in their neck of Cairo for their cooking exploits. He said their foods are always in high demand at community celebrations. Apparently, Nesrine paid attention. But despite leaving home with razor-sharp cooking chops, she had no intention to take them to market. In fact, her husband said, it was never a consideration. “My wife had never had a job and didn’t want to have a job. It’s not part of Egyptian culture.” No, Nesrine was happily married and looking forward to motherhood when all of a sudden, she was moving from Cairo to Oklahoma City. Nevertheless, she is the talent that makes Yummy

MUMMY CONTINUED FROM PAGE 15 Mummy one of the city’s brightest shining hidden gems. But that doesn’t mean her husband is out of the doghouse. “My father-in-law is still very upset with me,” he said. WRAP IT UP Despite her father’s objections, Nesrine Hussein is responsible for some of the best food you’ll find in a fast-casual environment. When you walk in, you’ll recognize right away the homework Mohamed has done in developing the concept. Whether it’s Mediterranean, Mexican or Asian, the hallmarks of the lovable mom-andpop restaurant usually include makeshift interior decorating, a certain dingy quality that hovers just within the bounds of what the Health Department will allow. But we don’t go for the atmosphere, we go for the food. You’ll definitely go to Yummy Mummy for the food, but the Husseins keep their dining room to almost hospital standards. The logo is clever and the name built for units dotting shopping centers across the land. And while Nesrine is a natural in the kitchen, her husband wants her back home with their kids, who are 8, 9 and 10, before they’re grown so he’s meticulously audited her cooking to derive recipes that can be taught and repeated. That was easy when Yummy Mummy opened last year because the

Page 16

menu had two items: Beef Mummy Wrap and Chicken Mummy Wrap. But now the menu has expanded to include salads, traditional fatta, appetizers and three kinds of lemonade. Authentic Egyptian flavors flow from unlikely places like a tortilla. “In Egypt, our wraps would be served in pita bread,” Hussein said. “But we wanted to do something different from that.” Whether to distinguish itself from other Middle Eastern/Mediterranean concepts or to cast a longer line at Western palates, the move was a success. Beef or chicken is marinated and boldly seasoned before being mummified in a flour tortilla then griddled like a panini. Vegetarians will approve of the falafel version. The Egyptian Quesadilla on the menu will have little in common with any you’ve ever had, and that’s a better thing than you might imagine. This one starts with pita bread stuffed with ground beef, seasoned with spices that include cinnamon, along with crumbled dry cheese. This isn’t your local sports bars ooey-gooey outburst of yellow cheese product. For me, the real find is the fatta. Meaning mixture, the dish comes with either steak or chicken and is served over rice, along with some crunchy fried tortilla pieces and a dollop of garlic-infused mayonnaise. Mix it up,

fork it down and don’t be surprised when the crew working your taste buds refuses to quit signaling requests for more. Yummy Mummy offers two soups (lentil, tomato) and three salads. Don’t miss the Samboosak, it’s a new addition to the menu. In a nutshell, it’s a fried dumpling stuffed with beef or olives and cheese. Vegetarians won’t want to

miss the eggplant-based Makdous. For dessert, don’t miss the housemade baklava. Yummy Mummy was built for growth, and the food is so distinctive finding a niche as a multiunit concept might be in the offing. If it does, maybe that gets Mohamed out of his father-in-law’s doghouse. Decorations inside Yummy Mummy.
