HOLLY WOOD AND HATS ON EXHIBIT AT CIT Y ARTS CENTER

C O N TA C T S

If you love fashion, history and art, two new exhibits at City Arts Center will make your day. “The Film Costumes of Edith Head” and “Mother’s Hats: The Doris Elliott Collection” open today. From 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., an opening artist reception will be held and is free to the public.

CACK Y IS QUITE COLORFUL

If you’re going to do anything related to the film industry in Oklahoma City these days, you’ll probably run into Cacky Poarch, executive director of the deadCenter Film Festival, which just completed its 10th festival. Or, you might see her roughing it up on roller skates in a tutu, mismatched socks, sparkly makeup and pigtails as “Goldie Knox,” a member of the Tornado Alley Roller Girls. “It’s great to be able to compete in that sport with people half my age … where I can wear a tutu and block other girls and skate as fast as I can,” said Poarch, 42. She was part of the group that moved deadCenter downtown, established it as a corporation and turned it into a premier film festival spread over five days in locations throughout downtown. Poarch has been active in the Oklahoma City community ever since she returned here, where she grew up, after spending time in Los Angeles and Aspen, Colo. STAY COOL, LOOK HOT Many of us lighten our beauty routines in the summer. Lightweight lotions replace heavy creams, bronzers take the place of foundation (at least on weekends), and hair’s natural waves get a vacation from the straightener. Living may be easier in the summertime, but Oklahoma’s heat and humidity, along with all that fun in the sun, aren’t always kind to hair and skin. Prevention magazine put together some tips that can help keep us looking good while sweating out the summer.

that the fern extract in these pills can significantly reduce UVA-related damage that leads to wrinkling and sun spots. Tip: For best results, pop one each day starting a week before you plan to be out in the sun. That will allow the antioxidants to build up in your system.

PREP YOUR RAZOR. To extend the life of your razor a few days and ensure a smoother shave, drizzle some olive oil on the blade. The oil prevents rust and product buildup, which can cause nicks.

>> USE A MAKEUP BRUSH TO BOOST HAIR >> SHINE. Shine products help restore moisture

and luminosity, but many contain heavy silicones that can weigh down hair. Instead, spritz shine spray onto your blush brush and then sweep over hair. The soft bristles help to apply precise, targeted shine.

>> SHAMPOO WITH BAKING SODA TO REMOVE SMOG. Pollution is higher in sum-

mer, meaning more free radicals to zap the shine and color from hair. To remove dulling residue, add a pinch of baking soda to your regular shampoo instead of using a harsh clarifying conditioner. This will rinse out the chemicals in your hair without stripping color, and it also can help prevent discoloration caused by chlorine and salt water.

USE SUNSCREEN TO PROTECT HAIR.

Before swimming, comb your regular sunscreen through your hair, which forms a barrier that prevents chlorine and salt water from stripping your color and drying out hair.

REALITY ART SHOW

FEATURES UNIVERSITY OF OKLAHOMA GRAD Will her art work for the judges? By Heather Warlick-Moore | Mood Publication Editor In fact, the notions of Hollywood glitz and glamour are quite close to Henderson’s heart. She loves to dress up in vintage Hollywood fashions, and her whimsical paintings reveal her fascination with fame, fortune and fantasy.

A face familiar to many Oklahomans, artist Jaime Lynn Henderson is now on her way to becoming familiar to a much larger audience. Henderson is one of 14 up-and-coming artists competing on Bravo’s “Work of Art: The Next Great Artist,” which airs at 10 p.m. Wednesdays.

“I live vicariously through a cast of female characters in all of my paintings that I jokingly call ‘my girls,’” Henderson said. “They get to do all kinds of fun things. They can be catty, they can be rude, they can be selfish, and all the things that in life we’re taught not to be and we don’t want to be described as, but I kind of let them do it, and I sort of live through them.”

Jaime Lynn Henderson

The show, which was fi lmed last fall, pits the artists against each other in various challenges, whittling them down week-byweek to the last artist standing, who will win a solo show at the Brooklyn Museum and a cash prize of $100,000.

In her artist bio, she states: “Mine is an atmosphere fi lled with cocktail parties, jewelry trees, romance, forest clearings, evening gowns, morality, animals, drama, beauty, and a oneness with God. Yes, all at the same time.”

Henderson spent most of her teen years living in Lawton and graduated from University of Oklahoma with an undergraduate degree in 2007. From there, she moved to Chicago and received a master’s degree in painting and drawing from School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

“Work of Art” is a unique combination of the high-brow world of art appreciation and the low-brow world of reality television, a combination Henderson said offers a little something for everybody.

The limelight of a reality TV show may not be where Henderson expected her art career to take her, but she said she feels wellsuited to the venture.

China Chow is the show’s host, and judges Bill Powers, a New York gallery owner, Jerry Saltz, senior art critic for New York Magazine, and Jeanne Greenberg Rohatyn, gallerist at Salon94 gallery in New York City, will determine who makes the cut and who is not “The Next Great Artist.”

“Really, my ultimate goal is just to be able to support myself solely off my creative endeavors in whatever way that manifests,” she said. “Being on a reality (series) is certainly one of those ways, but it’s just one of many. If, along the way, I get to dress up and wear red lipstick and smile for the camera, I’m not going to complain too much.”

To learn more about Henderson and to see more of her paintings, go online to her website, www.jaimelynnhenderson.com. “Casting Call Girls” by Jaime Lynn Henderson >> To see a slideshow of Henderson’s paintings, go online to mood.newsok.com.

Wine 101

Pairing wine and food

By James Woodward | Wine blogger When entertaining at home or abroad, having the ideal food and wine is a must. For many, it involves an uncertain decision-making process. Selecting alcoholic beverages can be confusing, especially choosing wine. Here is “Wine 101” at its simplest. Wine can be made from many things, including fruits, plants or even vegetables. Good wine is basically the fermented juice of grapes. The easiest way to describe wine is that “it tastes like something else.” All wine grapes taste like other fruits. Chardonnay, the most popular white wine grape in the world, has one basic fruit flavor component: apple. Chardonnay wines may exhibit multiple complexities such as tropical fruit, lemon citrus, butterscotch, vanilla cream or mellow oak in their flavors. Chardonnays generally have a “dry” fi nish or no sweetness in the aftertaste. It’s best served with light meat dishes such as fish, chicken or shellfish and cream sauces seem to pair best. Understanding the pairing of wines with food is easier than it seems. Learning what foods wines don’t go as well with is easier than learning what they do go well with. If white wine has a dry fi nish, what flavors would it clash with? It’s opposite: sweets.

Continuingwith basic white grapes, we come to sauvignon blanc, with flavors of grapefruit and pineapple. Chenin blanc: pear and apple. Riesling: apricot and ripe apple. Gewurztraminer: apricot, ripe apple and spice. Because of Gewurztraminer’s unique spiciness, it makes for a surprisingly good pair with Asian cuisines. Now on to red wines. The better red wines are usually classified as “dry” also, but they have ripe, berry flavors that make them remarkable with chocolate. Red wines are least compatable with fresh tropical citrus juices.

(yes, there is a red one): ripe berry and white pepper. Syrah/shiraz: ripe berry and spice. Almost all wines these days are fermented in stainless steel tanks. This allows the wine to be produced without any unnatural flavors added. Many white wines go straight from the fermentation tank to be filtered and then bottled. Most quality red wines are placed in some type of an

oak barrel to age for a particular length of time. The interior of the oak barrel makes contact with the wine, adding structure, depth and a natural element called tannin, which can add dryness and longevity to the wine.

And it’s not that red wines don’t go with fish. Rather, a fresh squeeze of lemon, lime or orange on that fish is contradictory to the ripe berry flavors of reds. They tend to bring out the best in heavier meats. Beef, lamb, pork, venison, chili, pizza or tomato sauces can be the perfect marriage for your red wine. Let’s analyze the basic red grape’s flavors. Cabernet sauvignon: black currant. Merlot: blackberry, black cherry and currant. Pinot noir: black raspberry and cranberry. Zinfandel

Bullock received a standing ovation from the audience at Sony Pictures Studios when she accepted the “Troops Choice” Award for Entertainer of The Year, from presenter Robert Downey, Jr. The award was voted on by members of the military. The 45-year-old actress has kept a low profile since her public split from husband Jesse James after she won the Best Actress Oscar for her role in “The Blind Side” earlier this year.
