As summer nears, style heats up in shades Linda Miller | Fashion Editor Summerlike weather often triggers a shopping trip for sunglasses, even though experts recommend we wear them year-round, not just when the sun’s shining or the temperature is soaring. Certainly, our baby blues need protecting from harmful ultraviolet rays, but many of us like that protection with a shot of style, thank you very much. With that in mind, let’s give a nod of approval to this year’s trends: color, retro styling, metal, mirror and chrome lens, and more feminine shapes and detail. And here’s good news for everyone who felt dwarfed in the recently popular doughnut-size shapes: The styles are slimming down, making them more wearable and flattering to more women. “Large frames, especially for women, have had a long run. But that trend is fading,” said Dani LaGace, eyewear director for Bolle, Serengeti and Cebe. “Smaller frames, neither over- or undersized, that provide medium coverage are quickly gaining ground.” This season, styles sometimes smack of old Hollywood with modified cat-eye shapes or edges that have been softened and curved. Details are subtle, from a sprinkling of tiny crystals to metal accents that grace temples and frame fronts. Metal isn’t limited to just a few touches, either. It’s the foundation of many styles. “Metal frames are in the midst of a resurgence,” LaGace said. “Combo frames, metal fronts with nylon temples, add a modern touch to a classic look.”
gold mirrored style in “Sex and the City 2,” so now women across the county are taking a shine to similar versions. Nothing oozes cool more than black sunglasses, though. Think Jackie O in her round shapes, or Tom Cruise in his Ray-Ban Wayfarers in “Risky Business.” Dark reigns, but it’s not a black-or-nothing season. Color peeks though with gradient lenses in rose or purple, Pepsi-blue chromes and plastic frames in rich, sensuous shades of burgundy, dark red and deep fuchsia. Color also finds its way onto sport sunglasses for athletes and sports enthusiasts, as well as those who just want to look like they’re ready to get their game on. Functional details include lightweight materials, impact-resistant frames and polarized lenses. “For the past five years, fashion styles have been on trend,” LaGace said. “Recently, sport sunglasses have become more and more popular. This swinging of the pendulum from fashion back toward sport is driven by performance frames taking cues from fashion with half-rim performance styles, fashionable sport frames, subtle color treatments and mirrors.” So, will it be mirrored aviators, black curved frames with crystal detail or a retro style reinterpreted from the past for a fresh new look?
