The voice that unites Impact report 2020-2021

Thank you to our donors, volunteers and partners!

A word from the General Director Dear friends, What a year it has been... the stage of Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier has been quiet for far too long, but we know that it takes more than a pandemic to extinguish the flame of opera that burns within each of you. The past eighteen months have shown us just how close-knit and supportive our community is, and how much you care about the place of artists in our society and the success of your cultural institutions. Thanks to your generous support, the Opéra de Montréal is alive and well and doubly determined to play an essential role in our city. Without you by our side, not only would we not have been able to weather the financial and psychological turbulence of repeated cancellations, but we would not have fully appreciated the full scope of our artistic and civic actions. In fact, despite the trying setbacks, the past year has been full of great successes. You have been the accomplices of our webcasts, the champions of our artists in residence, the ambassadors of our social initiatives. We are proud to see how far we have come. The future is very promising: your support and faithful presence are proof that together we can go far and make opera shine not only on stage, but also into every corner of our community. Thank you for believing in our mission and contributing to the vitality of opera in our wonderful city.

WE BUILD COMMUNITY. WE DEVELOP ARTISTS WHO MAKE US ALL PROUD. WE SING OUR STORIES. Our mission is multifaceted and goes beyond the stage. We are driven by the desire to do good through music and we strongly believe that opera can be a vehicle for social transformation, especially for traditionally marginalised groups. The Atelier lyrique, our professional training programme, is a unique springboard for emerging artists. Our bold and innovative programming of new works allows us to be a 21st century company that fully showcases the rich talent of our artistic terroir. This year, you have enabled us to achieve great things and to advance our mission through each of these facets: the training of emerging artists, transformational social initiatives, and artistic collaboration in the service of creation.

ARTISTIC PROGRAMMING Webcasts Our very first concern when the theatres closed was to continue to keep our artists employed and financially compensated, and working in safe conditions. During this unusual year, innovation, creation and solidarity were the order of the day! Firstly, we were able to implement and accelerate our digital projects, an ambition and a strategic priority that translated into a significant online presence thanks to highdefinition webcasts, positioning the Opéra de Montréal as the digital leader among opera companies in Canada. These webcasts have allowed us to maintain a strong artistic presence and to showcase the work of our artists, making it accessible to tens of thousands of people and reaching new audiences across the country and internationally, while providing employment and royalties to several hundred artists, musicians and technicians.

Grant from the Ministère de la Culture et des Communications Thanks to the exceptional support of the Ministère de la Culture et des Communications, the Opéra de Montréal was able to fully deploy its digital ambition. We were awarded a $700,000 grant as part of the Digital Ambition initiative that enabled us to develop our webcasting projects and set up a digital squad to serve Quebec’s lyric art, in collaboration with the Opéra de Québec (Quebec City), Opéra du Royaume (Chicoutimi), Ballet Opéra Pantomime (Montreal), Chants Libres (Montreal) and Musique 3 Femmes (Montreal).

La voix humaine, 2020

La voix humaine & L’hiver attend beaucoup de moi A double program with Poulenc’s La voix humaine and the world premiere of L’hiver attend beaucoup de moi - a new work by Laurence Jobidon (composer) and Pascale St-Onge (librettist) with an all-female and all-Quebec creative team. What a challenge this collaboration with Musique 3 Femmes was a world premiere during a pandemic! The production, initially scheduled for March 2020 at L’Espace GO and then in November 2020 at Théâtre Maisonneuve, had to be webcast instead. This allowed us to reach an audience four times the size of the one in the theatre and to virtually welcome Ms. Nathalie Roy, Quebec’s Minister of Culture and Communications.

La Bohème The first webcast was a classic of the repertoire, Puccini’s La Bohème, in the 2017 production captured during Montreal’s 375th anniversary celebrations and simulcast at Percival Molson Stadium to a crowd of over 15,000. A new Opéra de Montréal production with an all-Canadian cast, seen from the coast to coast.

Hänsel and Gretel

Hänsel and Gretel

For the holidays, we offered families Humperdinck’s operatic tale, in a collaboration between the Atelier lyrique de l’Opéra de Montréal, the National Theatre School of Canada and the National Circus School - the next generation of performing artists. This production, which was part of a pedagogical guide (Hänsel, Gretel... and the others! ) for students in all Quebec elementary schools.

Carmen Captured in 2019 and broadcast in 23 theatres across the province in February 2020, the production of Bizet’s Carmen, directed by the exceptional Quebec filmmaker Charles Binamé, was a natural choice for a broadcast. With a 100% Canadian cast, this blockbuster allowed us to test a pay-per-view formula for webcasting, one of the objectives of the digital strategy being to test various formulas for monetizing content.

NEW WORKS The Opéra de Montréal’s new artistic vision makes it a major cultural catalyst within the Quebec and Canadian artistic landscape. As such, we seek to bring the public together in an adventure that, through the great diversity of artists, stories and collaborations, leads to the creation of operas and artistic content that ensures a strong Montreal signature as well as the potential for international outreach through digital means. Here’s how we plan to achieve this vision:

Michel Beaulac Artistic Director

Present seven new works over the next three seasons.

Engage leading artists from a various disciplines and backgrounds to use opera as a creative laboratory.

Program chamber operas to further diversify our Canadian programming and generate new opportunities for emerging artists.

Fortunately, the rehearsal halls were not closed despite the confinement, allowing new works to continue their artistic evolution, a creative process that usually spans several years.

Laurence Jobidon

Thus, in November 2020, we complete the creative project beaucoup de moi, highlighting composer Laurence Jobidon, Pascale St-Onge.

Michel Marc Bouchard

Julien Bilodeau

In addition to this world premiere, all the creative workshops, allowing the essential rehearsal of the new works, continued in preparation for the presentation of La beauté du monde, the opera commissioned from playwright Michel Marc Bouchard and composer Julien Bilodeau (to be performed in 2022), as well as the chamber opera Le Flambeau de la nuit, a work by Olivier Kemeid (libretto) and Hubert Tanguay-Labrosse (music), presented in collaboration with Ballet Opéra Pantomime and I Musici de Montréal in September 2021.

CONCERTS AND COLLABORATIONS The artists in residence at the Atelier lyrique have had a busy year despite repeated confinements and multiple adjustments required to comply with public health standards. The rehearsal rooms at Place des Arts being available almost year-round, several artistic projects and collaborations were recorded. The reunion with our public in the spring of 2021 was all the more moving.

PROFESSIONAL TRAINING Offering training and stage experience within the company, the Atelier lyrique artist in residence programme aims to properly equip artists in all aspects of their careers: vocal technique, musical and dramatic interpretation, lyrical diction, languages, health, mental preparation for performance, finances, professional photos, etc. From the very beginning of the season, our primary objective has been to offer artists the opportunity to develop and continue to benefit from their residency at the Atelier despite the constraints and challenges posed by health restrictions. Every effort was made to allow them to rehearse safely and participate in exciting projects.

CAREER DEVELOPMENT Each year, the artists of the Atelier lyrique benefit from the expertise of the most renowned teachers in the opera world. More than 60 professionals are called upon to work with them, in individual or group coaching, or in the context of master classes. The artists are accompanied in their development by Chantal Lambert, director of the Atelier lyrique, as well as by a permanent team including a head vocal coach, a singing teacher, a stage director and a neuropsychologist. This year, we doubled our efforts to increase opportunities for career development auditions for agents and musical directors, recording of professional demos, role study and dramatic work, etc. Monthly recording sessions allowed artists to fill out their portfolios for future auditions and to perfect the expression of their art in front of a camera. Many other workshops were held online, helping our artists for the off-stage elements of their careers.

“The past year has been really challenging for me and my fellow musicians. I feel so privileged to have continued my training at the Atelier lyrique in this particular context, and to have had the support of a community that is always ready to encourage us to reach our full potential and spread our wings.” — Jean-Philippe Mc Clish

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT Art education and social action are more than ever at the heart of our company and constitute one of the pillars of our strategic vision. The Opéra de Montréal is a key player on the Montreal and Canadian stage, and as such, it has given itself the mandate to realise the extraordinary potential of this multidimensional art form in education and in society. Opera as a vehicle for social change is the mission we have given ourselves, by proposing possibilities to groups that life has made socially and medically fragile. Through access to culture and cocreation, opera builds social links, promotes personal development, facilitates social rehabilitation and reintegration, breaks isolation, builds a spirit of community, contributes to physical and psychological well-being, and fosters an emotionally enriching and transformational experience among other effects.

ESPACE TRANSITION AT THE OPERA The collaboration with Espace Transition at CHU Sainte-Justine is exemplary in this respect: a project to co-create an opera for 15 young people aged 15 to 25 with mental health problems. They become the artisans and performers of their work, supervised by a clinical team from Sainte-Justine and an artistic team from the Opéra de Montréal. The 2nd cohort was supposed to present its show in May 2020, but this had to be postponed due to the pandemic. Activities resumed in the fall of 2020, only to be interrupted again in October. However, the will on both sides (clinical team and artistic team) allowed the group to continue the work while respecting health standards. The final show, scheduled for December 2020, was again postponed, but finally saw the light of day in January 2021, at the 5e salle at the Place des Arts, for a recording and broadcast. The 3rd cohort started in March, according to a revised formula of 13 weeks instead of 26, and this group presented their project, in front of an audience, at the 5e salle de la Place des Arts, on May 27.

LA GANG À RAMBROU A similar co-creative approach was developed with the organisation La Gang à Rambrou, which works with intellectually disabled and Autistic people. This is our second project with them, which culminated in a public performance in June 2021. We also introduced specific training for our teaching artists to equip them to work with diverse clienteles. Indeed, for several years now, we have been developing in-house expertise in cultural mediation, working with artists from the ranks of the Opera, notably from the Atelier lyrique. More recently, we increased the number of specialised training sessions with a cohort of regular artist-collaborators, in order to better respond to the specific needs of each of the clienteles we work with (children/ adolescents/adults, people with physical and intellectual disabilities, etc.).

PROJECTS IN DEVELOPMENT Conseil des arts de Montréal For several years now, the Opéra de Montréal has developed expertise in cultural mediation based on an approach that favours the co-creation of an opera. The Conseil des arts de Montréal has highlighted the relevance of this approach by creating videos based on the Opéra de Montréal model to guide cultural organisations in structuring their social action.

Connected North

A second series of three vignettes is in development (the first was launched in the summer of 2021), this time taking the narrative point of view of a beneficiary of one of our projects, thus giving a voice to marginalized clienteles: opera as a voice for the most vulnerable.

Connected North – new collaboration Opera initiation workshops offered to schools in Canada’s Far North (First Nations and Inuit elementary and secondary schools), Nunavut, Yukon, Northwest Territories, Northern Canadian provinces, through the Ottawabased organization Connected North. We offer 8 different workshops (music, singing, orchestra, composition, costumes, make-up, etc.), given by artists from the Opéra de Montréal.

COVID Clinic – in development We have begun discussions with Dr. Emilia Liana Falcone, Director of the Microbiome and Mucosal Defenses Research Unit at the Clinical Research Institute of Montreal (CRIM), to offer a breathing treatment program for patients with COVID, inspired by vocal technique used by opera singers.

Research project We are fully convinced of the merits of our approach and the positive effects we regularly see in workshops and co-creation projects. However, we are keen to develop in parallel the right tools to fully measure the impact of our actions and thus better direct our intervention strategy and our collaborations. In particular, we are working with the Association for Opera in Canada and other Canadian opera companies to implement a platform to evaluate the impact of all our educational and social projects.

EDUCATION

LET’S TALK OPERA!

20 September 2020 Bibliothèque nationale (BAnQ) Hybrid

We believe that it is imperative that our artistic projects strengthen our roots in the community by nurturing a dialogue between our artists and the public around the creative process. This is what we have been proposing for several seasons with ‘Let’s talk opera’, a series of free talks offered before each opera in the greater Montreal area, in order to reach as many people as possible (more than a dozen different venues venues - and online - attracting over 5,000 people). Guest artists, singers and host dive into the heart of the works to to decipher the history, the context and the music, all accompanied by musical extracts with singers and pianists.

25 October 2020 Bibliothèque nationale (BAnQ) Online

This season, we had to cancel a large number of the planned talks, but several were held online, or in a hybrid format. In fact, we plan to continue exploring a hybrid model for this series.

CENTRE DE SERVICES SCOLAIRES DE MONTRÉAL (CSSDM) Thousands of young people can experience opera through our educational programmes. In partnership with the CSSDM, we are developing a brand-new project, partnering in the redefinition of school libraries, renamed ‘Learning Hubs’. These 21st century libraries will be cultural spaces for young people to discover and experience opera through digital tools. The creation of new works is an ideal way to support this process of discovery and to demonstrate the relevance of contemporary opera, exposing young people to the artistic process and allowing for direct contact with the artists and creators behind an opera. We will implement our project in September 2021 and develop creative and introduction-to-opera workshops, as well as virtual tools to reach schools in Montreal and the province. In addition, we are continuing our three-year collaboration (2020-2023) with the CSSDM to offer various workshops and activities in schools. This year, from March to May 2021, we offered over 50 workshops in schools.

coOpera In addition, the coOpera project is in its 17th edition this year. This initiative is in fact at the origin of our co-creation process and has allowed us to see the enormous pedagogical, creative and human potential of such an approach. Initially targeting schools in underprivileged areas of the Southwest borough of Montreal, the project allows us to work with teachers for an entire school year. We developed writing, music, directing and production workshops, optimising collaborations between the teaching and artistic teams over the years. The coOpera project was the subject of the feature film documentary “Les petits géants”(2009), directed by Anaïs Barbeau-Lavalette and Émile Proulx-Cloutier, which won a Gémeaux Award.

Talent Gala

Like so many other organizations, we had to rethink the format of our annual fundraising event, the Talent Gala of the National Auditions for the Atelier lyrique. A virtual platform, custom-developed by LCI LX of Montreal, was used to meet the technical needs of the event.

Q&A Chantal

Guests were invited to a cocktail party via Zoom, followed by the performance of the audition finalists (prerecorded wherever they were in Canada or the United States), the presentation of the Audience Award, and a live chat with the finalists and Atelier lyrique Director Chantal Lambert.

The virtual event allowed us to develop a broader community of support for the Atelier lyrique and to highlight the National Audition process, in order to showcase our programme and our artists across the country.

AN EXCEPTIONAL YEAR

Thank you! You are extraordinary! Throughout the pandemic, the outpouring of solidarity from our opera community has truly moved us. We were so pleased to welcome hundreds of new donors who donated the value of their tickets or subscriptions at each postponement or cancellation (and there were more than one!), or during the free webcasts. Most importantly, we were delighted to expand our philanthropic circle geographically, reaching new donors across the province, and even the country! We sought to nurture the relationship with our opera community through virtual events, artist chats, and even a shared passion for operatic trivia! Even though we are now Zoom regulars, there is no substitute for experiencing the human voice in person. What a pleasure it was to meet again, even masked, for the spring events at Place des Arts! We wanted to communicate our appreciation in every way possible, launching our first telephone thank you campaign this year, with customer service agents, administrative staff, board members and artists-in-residence.

With all our gratitude, Jean-Pierre Primiani Director of Development
