from the director

on behalf of Opening Nights, we are thrilled to share the second half of our 25th Anniversary Season with you! We’ve saved the best for last this spring with so many incredible performances coming your way. In February, we kick off the vibrant lineup with:

The Other Mozart by Sylvia Milo at Turner Auditorium on February 4. This captivating one-woman show tells the story of Mozart’s forgotten sister, Nannerl, a piano virtuoso in her own right. Television, stage and film star Katharine McPhee will perform live at the home of the FSU President on February 6.

A month-long celebration of Black History Month kicks off with Step Afrika! on February 7 and is sure to delight all ages with an exciting blend of percussive dance styles that integrate songs, storytelling and humor. Pulitzer Prize winning author, Colson Whitehead will speak on February 9 about his writings and engage the audience with insightful discussion.

The Queens of Soul, Morgan James and Erica Gabriel take center stage with our very own Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra on February 11 for a celebration of the music of Motown, R&B and soul; celebrate Valentine’s Day with a breathtaking performance by contemporary dance company MOMIX and their visually stunning repertoire entitled Alice, inspired by Alice in Wonderland; and Ethiopian jazz singer, Meklit, will perform on February 28.

French-based Zodiac Trio will perform Benny Rides Again, a celebration of the songs of Benny Goodman on March 3; country and folk music legend Emmylou Harris takes the Ruby Diamond stage on March 4 for an unforgettable evening of the music that has thrived for more than 50 years; theatre fans get ready for New York Gilbert & Sullivan Player’s The Mikado on March 11 for a matinee performance; and families won’t want to miss

Legendary late-night comedian and television host Jay Leno will pack Ruby Diamond for a memorable evening of laughs on March 29; Opening Nights continues its collaboration with the Chain of Parks Arts Festival with digital media artist John Ensor Parker on April 13; FSU’s PRISM is back with its traditional spring performance on April 16; and the season concludes with Piano Battle, a rollicking good time, on April 25.

Sponsorships and memberships make each season possible, and we are very grateful to the many people who have generously supported us this season. As we continue to celebrate the Opening Nights 25-year legacy into the next season, we invite you to renew or become a member or a sponsor of our 2023–24 Season. From town to gown, Opening Nights is a vital university and community performing arts program with a mission worthy of supporting and celebrating! These performances create a thriving cultural life in our community and create priceless educational experiences on campus and throughout the community. Ask any Opening Nights associate about these philanthropic opportunities. We hope you join us!

Thank you again for your support of the Opening Nights 25th Anniversary Season at Florida State University. Please enjoy these outstanding performances!

zodiac trio

The Zodiac Trio, based in both France and the USA, teamed up with French jazz arranger Jean-Marc Brisson to pay homage to the King of Swing, Benny Goodman. Benny Rides Again brings to life an array of legendary tunes from the Swing Era arranged masterfully by Brisson, showcasing the original tunes through the lens of a classical composer and performing ensemble. Complex rhythms and sparking virtuosity bring these masterpieces to life in a new way. Since its formation in 2006, the Zodiac Trio has been a fresh voice, commissioning dozens of new works and presenting them in numerous new music residencies and concerts at institutions across North America.

Zodiac Trio

Continued from pg. 19

One of today's premiere clarinet-violinpiano ensembles, the Zodiac Trio is known for presenting masterpieces for their unconventional instrumentation alongside hidden gems, arrangements, and the occasional duo/solo in a concert experience marked with particular gusto, virtuosity, and energy.

The Zodiac Trio's story begins in New York in 2006 when three young musicians from the Manhattan School of Music decided to join forces in an unconventional ensemble and spearhead a career dedicated to the clarinetviolin-piano instrumentation. The Zodiac

Trio was officially launched with a concert at Merkin Concert Hall in New York City and presented to the classical music listeners by WQXR's Young Artist Showcase. One year after its founding, the newly-minted Zodiac Trio decided to move to Paris to attend the Paris Conservatory under the guidance of the Ysaye Quartet and their unique chamber music program—becoming the first American group and first ensemble with a wind instrument to be accepted to the program. Their formative years in Paris were laced with victories on the international chamber music circuit with prizes from the Cziffra Foundation, the FNAPEC Chamber Music Competition, the International Carlo Saliva Competition, the International Chamber Music Competition Duchi

D'Acquaviva, the International Chamber Music Competition Val Tidone, as well as the Yellow Springs Chamber Music Competition, among others. In 2008, the London-based MUSO magazine noticed and highlighted the ensemble in a two-page feature.

Today the Zodiac Trio enjoys an international concert schedule that consistently spans three continents and is recognized by many as one of the foremost clarinet-violin-piano ensembles performing today. Since its formation, the Zodiac Trio has achieved a level of recognition on the international chamber music stage, rarely bestowed upon an ensemble of such untraditional instrumentation. The Zodiac Trio's extensive touring schedule has brought it to many premiere international venues such as

Ottawa Chamberfest, Festival Radio France Montpellier, International Colmar Festival, Beijing Performing Arts Center, Izumi Hall in Japan, and Lincoln Center in New York. The trio's live performances have been broadcast by France 3 Television, Radio Classique, Beijing's CCTV News, Canada's CBC Radio and Television, NBC, New York's WXQR and WNYC, Chicago's WFMT, Boston's WGBH, Italy's RAI and Radio France in Paris.

Over the years, the Zodiac Trio has garnered wide critical acclaim for its unyielding passion for the clarinet-violin-piano instrumentation, its unbending dedication to perfection, and the thrill of sharing its love for chamber music with its audiences. The group has been praised for their "impeccable technique" (Fanfare Magazine), "remarkable musicality of rare intensity" (La Tribune, France), "seemingly effortless ease" (San Angelo Standard-Times), "truly exceptional and sublime talent" (Nice-Matin, France); and declared by the French newspaper La Marseillaise as "one the best chamber ensembles of its generation..."

Since their first touring season nearly a decade ago, the Zodiac Trio has performed in almost 40 states, as well as Canada, Sweden, Scotland, France, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Japan, and notably in more than 30 different cities in China over the span of four extensive tours. In addition to performing, the ensemble has been invited to present master classes and clinics at such institutions as the Manhattan School of Music, San Francisco Conservatory, Roosevelt University, University of Minnesota, Tulsa University, University of Missouri, Western Michigan University, Colorado College, Boston Conservatory, Berklee College of Music, Tufts University, Southeastern University of Oklahoma, China Conservatory of Beijing, Mount Allison University, Acadia University, and many others.

Considering its novelty instrumentation, the Zodiac Trio has carried the torch for new music since its debut concert, which featured a world premiere of a work written for the then newly-formed group. Since, the Zodiac Trio has commissioned over three dozen new works, including from Grammy®-award-winning composer Richard Danielpour, and has had over 100 works written via call-for-score. Their 2015 album DREAMTIME featured three works written for the ensemble and received accolades

from the new music community. Sequenza 21 wrote, "the Zodiac Trio excels at bringing new compositions to life."

In 2013, wanting to incorporate pedagogy into their modus operandi further, the Zodiac Trio founded an international chamber music academy and festival in the South of France—Zodiac Music Academy & Festival (ZMAF)(zodiacfestival.com). The summer festival invites highly advanced students and pre-professionals to spend two weeks performing on the Côte D'Azur and studying with an internationally renowned faculty led by the Zodiac Trio. Now in its seventh season, ZMAF has grown to be recognized as a competitive and selective academy that attracts over 200 applications each year from top schools across North America. The Zodiac Trio is represented exclusively by Latitude 45 Arts (latitude45arts.com).

MEET THE TRIO
