Jay Bingle and Jayden Brown were married on 26 October 2019 in a ceremony at The Chapel Montville. Their reception was held in Poets Cafe. “We met in Warwick. I had another wedding business and was an exhibitor at an event. Jayden was the local journalist covering the event. We became friends and over many years both in different relationships, we lost contact. Four years ago we found ourselves single and met up for a date and it all went from there.” “I (Jay) proposed. I had gone away for a week of ‘RnR’ in northern NSW in our caravan. Jayden and a few family and friends joined me at the end of the week. Everyone was teed up, except Jayden! The crew set up for me on the edge of the ocean between the rocks. Jayden being stubborn when I said, ‘Let’s go for a walk and meet everyone now the sun’s going down’ replied, ‘Oh do I have to?’ He finally agreed but wanted to wear his PJ’s. I managed to convince him to get changed. When we arrived, everyone was hiding but the hundreds of battery-operated candles signalled something was going on, and onto one knee I went. Popping the question, Jayden’s response was, ‘About time!’”

“Jay based his whole outfit around gold snakeskin boots imported from the UK by Jeffery West. He was on the hunt for a blue suit to match (it had to be a particular blue) and gold accessories. Jayden wanted white for himself and had so many suits delivered before deciding on a crystal-embossed suit. We brought elements of each other’s outfits into the overall theme. We wanted a big celebration with a relaxed vibe and elements of fun and theatrics. Instead of a flower girl we had a ‘lolly man’. He entered the chapel, stood at the front with an old school tape deck playing while he handed out lolly necklaces and wrist bands.”

“I walked down the aisle with my mum and the doors closed. Then Jayden entered with a surprise train flowing from his shoulders like a prince. After we walked out of the chapel, Jayden’s grandmother ‘Kunchi’ performed a Native American smudging and blanket ceremony. During our reception, drag queens Shu Shu Fontana and Scarlett Fever performed to get the party started.” “Our highlight was how well it all came together. We received so many comments from our guests on how amazed they were by everything and how they loved the vibe we created in the space.” “On our honeymoon we found ourselves standing in front of the Eiffel Tower in Paris.”

Kate Galea and Jo Castle were married on 1 December 2018 (one year and one week after the referendum) at Hunter Valley Lodge & Retreat. “We met across a pool table in 2005 in a cigarette smoke filled bar in our University town in England. We played pool, then Jo gave me a ‘backie’ home on her bike and the rest is history. I proposed a lifetime ago on Primrose Hill in London. I knew that Jo was taking me out for a birthday picnic and she led me there by drawing chalk arrows on the floor from my office in Camden all the way to a lovely picnic spot several miles away with an amazing view of the city. She was waiting there with a spread of all my favourite foods. When it came time for presents, I said the best present I could have was for Jo to be my person forever and I pulled a ring out which I had commissioned a designer to make. It had a tiny diamond but that didn’t matter. Basically Jo did all the hard work and I just whipped out the ring. That was about nine years ago, then we moved to Australia where we couldn’t actually get married so we didn’t talk about it until marriage equality passed here. The day the vote came in, my sister called us and said that we had made such a fuss about marriage equality that there had better be a wedding after all that!”

“The ceremony was held in the garden under the pergola. It was just us, the celebrant and our favourite 20 people. Our celebrant suggested we could really personalise the ceremony and instead of talking about how much we loved each other, we included how much we loved each individual or couple and what they meant to us. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house. The reception was held on the deck of the lodge, and in the pool, and then later in the spa. We wanted to keep our wedding small so we could all fit in the same accommodation and have a weekend away with friends and family. We decided to go for a feast type spread which worked really well as it was a small wedding on one big table. We had hired a big speaker and I had put a play list together but feedback was that it sounded like the sound track to Dawson’s Creek or The O.C. My friend Adam who had come from England took control of the play list. For favours, everyone got a different miniature bottle of spirits with their name tied to it. In each person’s room we had a weekend survival kit with paracetamol and Berocca etc. The next day we put our drinking trousers back on and did a wine tour of the local wineries.” “We didn’t have a theme or a vision. We just chose things we liked. Basically we wanted a weekend of drinking wine with our best friends and family and we had to lure them there with the promise of a wedding and free food and drink. We had been away from our Sydney friends and family for two years and away from the English crew for seven years so we wanted our wedding to be a way to bring together all the people we missed and loved the most. While we were planning the wedding, we were travelling around the country, so we had to do everything over the phone or online without meeting people.”
“Choosing our wedding outfits was a bit problematic. While we were planning the wedding, Jo and I lived in a converted motorhome and were driving around the country. We spent most of our time in small towns which didn’t have a lot of shops and we were never in one place for long, so online shopping was out. It also meant we didn’t have anyone to shop with apart from each other, and didn’t actually have a mirror on our bus! Until 10 days before the wedding, I was going to wear a dress I bought in French Connection about six months earlier and had sent to my sister’s house for safekeeping. However, when I tried it on with Jo in her dress for the first time, we realised that we looked like we were going to different events. After a panic trip up and down Oxford Street in Paddington, I found a black tux jumpsuit that I loved. By then it was just five days until the wedding and it was about 10 inches too long, so I bought it and found an alterations place that could make it fit me just right. My jumpsuit was from LOVER and Jo’s dress was from Manning Cartell. Our rings are both plain and from a British designer called Daisy Knights. We have bought each other presents from there for the last decade so it seemed appropriate.”

“Our wedding highlight was having all the people we love in one place at one time. Our advice for anyone planning their wedding is to make it about the people, not about the stuff. And if your wedding is outside, make sure you know where the sun is going to be at that time so your guests don’t have to sit in boiling hot sun for half an hour as they won’t be very impressed.” “We had already been on a two-year hiatus so after spending another few weeks with family before they went back to London, we went back to living in our bus and travelling around Australia. In June 2019 we went to Europe for two months and then on the way back to Australia we booked into a ‘fancy pants’ hotel in Thailand for our official honeymoon.”

William and Dominic Grigor were married on 17 August 2019 at Pagoda Resort & Spa in Perth. “Dom was on a deployment at sea with the Navy when he saw Will’s profile on Tinder, giving it a like before he had set sail. Will then came across Dom’s profile and although Will found Dom very handsome in the picture, it was his profile words that hooked him in: ‘Why don’t you come back to my apartment for a game of Jenga, I want to see how good your pull-out game is.’ We chatted for a bit and met for a first date at Opera Bar. Will was so nervous he spilt a beer all over Dom’s pants (and it was the first beer of the date, so no excuses!) Will won Dom over with his charm and witty jokes and with the surprise harbour cruise. At ‘exactly 3:15pm’ we had to go for a walk, and ended up on a tall replica First Fleet ship with cheese, wine and kisses. The rest is history! We never did play Jenga though.”

Dominic described how he proposed to Will on a hot summer’s afternoon: “We travelled to Perth from Sydney to do the meet and greet for Will and my family. The day after Christmas celebrations, I planned a day trip to Kings Park for a wine and cheese afternoon session with my friends, Kris and Klyde. Will also invited his mates, Gemma and Keith. Will and I arrived at the park a little early which worked out well, because little did Will know, I had something prepared for him. After an hour of him constantly asking me: ‘Where are Kris and Klyde, do they know Kings Park at all? Why are they so late? What are we doing here?’ Gemma and Keith were also running late and I could see Will getting a little suspicious so I suggested we move to another area. It was 38 degrees, a stinking hot summer’s day! Will said ‘Why? That area is full on in the sun and it looks like we’ll be baked. I’m already so sunburnt babe!’ I finished my wine, built up the courage and stood up to gather our things and Will unwillingly followed me. There was nothing wrong with the spot where we were, I just needed to buy time so Kris and Klyde could set up the camera and drone while they were hiding in the bush. So there we were, overlooking Perth’s beautiful city skyline at Kings Park. I rubbed Will’s back and asked him: ‘What’s on your mind at this exact moment?’ He responded: ‘Well I’m getting burnt on my sunburn and you’re rubbing my sunburnt back while the cheese is melting into fondue and where the bloody hell is everyone, it’s been ages!’ He was clearly frustrated so I told myself, I better do this now. Just as Will began to storm off to find some shade, I shouted ‘Will’. He turned around and realised what was going on because I had dropped to one knee, holding the ring in a box. In shock he accidentally dropped everything he was holding, came over and cried out a ‘YES’. We kissed and that was it. Klyde and Kris turned up just at that moment and Will screamed ‘OMG you just missed…’ Kris quickly interrupted and said: ‘What took so long?’ They had been hiding in the bushes with a drone ready to film the proposal. I had planned it with them to get it on tape. Will was a little embarrassed his tantrum had been witnessed but it’s all a good joke now! Gemma and Keith arrived with champagne and we celebrated the evening away! What an amazing afternoon.”
“Our wedding theme was Rustic/Traditional. The ceremony was our absolute highlight. Our advice for anyone planning a wedding is to take your time, write down ideas as you go and enjoy it!” “We honeymooned in Cebu, Philippines, staying at Shangri-La Mactan.”

Fiona Crandell and Julie Ward were married on 24 August 2019 at Kingfisher Bay Resort, Fraser Island. Their ceremony was held on Sunset Beach and was followed by a reception in The Dingo Den. Fiona and Julie were both working at the Brisbane Casino when they met over 20 years ago. “We were friends first, but there was always a strong attraction. We went on a few dates and before long, we knew we were meant to be together”, said Fiona, reminiscing on how the relationship began. Fast forward two decades, the couple were still going strong and little did Fiona know, was fast approaching a proposal. “When we were rostered on the same shift at the Casino, we would spend our breaks together at the Brisbane Botanical Gardens, wandering through the beautiful trees and lying on the banks of the Brisbane river soaking up the scenery. Not long after we had celebrated our 20th anniversary, Julie surprised me with a night out. She told me to pack a bag and we checked in to the elegant Treasury Heritage Hotel – a remarkable, 5-star property located just near the Botanic Gardens. Julie took me back to our old favourite spot by the river and proposed. There were a lot of happy tears and a big ‘Yes!’ It was an immediate acceptance – the most perfect moment! We couldn’t wait to share our happy news with our friends and family.”

“When it came time for us to choose a destination for our wedding, we knew we wanted somewhere relaxed, scenic and surrounded by nature; just like how our love story began. We selected Kingfisher Bay Resort, a 4-star eco resort situated on the western bay of Fraser Island and nestled amongst the World Heritage-listed landscape. The resort had a wide range of accommodation options for our guests to select from, with everything from hotel rooms to 2 and 3-bedroom villas. It was also the perfect base for everyone to explore the island in the days following the wedding, whether it was a guided tour to the iconic sights or just enjoying the surrounding beaches.” “In terms of the inspiration or styling for our wedding, we didn’t have a specific theme. Instead, we just tried to select pieces that would blend into the beautiful coastal location. In preparation for the big day, we booked ‘The Beach House’ – one of the Executive Houses within the resort grounds. It was a magnificent 6-bedroom property with a large living area and a number of private decks looking out over the ocean. It was the perfect place for us all to get ready and to stay after the wedding. Plus, it was only 30 metres from the shore (and actually overlooked the ceremony area) which meant no wedding cars were needed! We walked down onto the shore to Sunset Beach; the intimate setting for our vows. Our styling was quite minimal – a lovely floral arbour set the scene, leaving the beautiful beach backdrop to speak for itself and really be the stand-out feature.”
“Our wedding was everything we could have hoped for. The morning began with grey skies and rain, but by the time of the ceremony, the clouds had all broken off for a picture-perfect day. Our children were our bridal party and we were surrounded by 54 of our closest family and friends, celebrating our love in the most spectacular setting! Following the ceremony, we all gathered at The Sunset Bar for cocktails and celebration platters, as the beach was bathed in the most stunning golden light. Our guests mingled down on the sand, enjoying drinks and nibbles alongside the jetty.�

“For our reception, we selected The Dingo Den, one of the resort’s outdoor venues, for dinner under the stars. Our tables were decorated simply, but beautifully with crisp whites, soft greenery and touches of gold, with festoon lighting strung above. We’d arranged personalised wooden place cards for our guests on each place setting as another way to tie in with the nature surrounds. The resort has an extensive catering selection. We chose the Aussie Barbeque Buffet which was delicious, the food was fantastic! The resort team were excellent throughout our whole stay and were a great assistance to us. Their event coordinators ensured that everything ran smoothly, which certainly took the pressure and stress off us. We printed our own invitations and signs online through Vista Print. For our wedding favours we had ‘magic beans’ with inspirational words written on them, for guests to take home, plant and grow. We organised the music ourselves, putting together a few Spotify playlists with all of our favourite songs which we played through the resort’s PA system.” “We spent one month travelling throughout Europe for our honeymoon, which also included a 14-day river cruise. It was wonderful!” “Our advice for other couples planning their wedding would be to make lists and ask a lot of questions, but most importantly, just have fun!”

Marg and Ros were married on 24 August 2019 in a ceremony and reception held at Level 12, Rydges Hotel, South Bank. “We met in 1977 when we were playing cricket for different clubs in Brisbane. We both were selected for the Queensland side and we went from there. In 1980 we bought a house together but we still weren’t ‘together’. It was a slow process and when we were in Perth for the National Titles in 1981, that’s when we got serious and realised it was more than just a friendship! You could say the penny dropped! Since then we have been together through thick and thin, from living in different houses to sharing three dogs, a cat and a cockatoo.” “No one really proposed. We thought that when same sex marriage became law we would take the next step but we were not in a hurry. After all we had waited 38 years so what’s a few more months! We just made a decision one night, I think we were in bed and we both sort of just said: ‘Why not?’ Not very romantic! But if you know us, you will realise that’s just the way we make decisions like that.”

Hugh Allen and John Webby were married on 4 October 2019 at Baxter Barn, a private 1840’s cottage and barn yard. “We met on Grindr in December 2015 but did not chat much. We met for dinner at Lezzet Turkish restaurant in February 2016. John picked this location for dinner as he had just moved around the corner. John offered to drive Hugh back to Richmond, so I knew he was interested. Being a gentleman, he dropped me off and went home because he had an early start the next day for work. We celebrate our anniversary each year over dinner at Lezzet’s. On our second anniversary we had dinner at Lezzet’s then went to Ormond Point at Elwood to watch the sunset. Hugh surprised John with a bottle of champagne and our favourite cheeses for dessert. As the sun was setting, Hugh presented John’s ring and asked John to marry him. We designed and made the rings a few months earlier, which include our birthstones, Ruby (John), Sapphire (Hugh) and a diamond (as every queen needs a diamond) set in a white gold band. It was discussed and decided very early in our relationship that it would be Hugh that proposed. If it was left up to John, we would have been engaged and married after about six months of meeting.”
“As soon as we walked into Baxter Barn 18 months earlier, we both fell in love with it and knew straight away we wanted to have our wedding there. Baxter Barn is an 1840’s cottage and barn yard with its own lake, rose and flower gardens and plenty of opportunities for photos. There were ducks and geese roaming around the grounds. Our wedding theme was a smart casual country barn yard shindig as we are both originally country boys, Hugh from Southwest Victoria and John from the North Island of New Zealand. We wanted a relaxed wedding with no pretense or anything contrived. We wanted to celebrate in style with flare, so we had glitter cannons, a rainbow balloon arch and rainbow umbrellas, drag queen performances and fireworks.” “The dessert table was included in the package. We preserved our own olives in small jars, which would be the bonbonniere for guests to take home.The jars were stacked and displayed as a cake decorated with a rainbow ribbon. We performed a ribbon cutting instead of a cake cutting. We had a cocktail style wedding with small and medium sized finger food being passed around all afternoon and evening. Drinks and cocktails on arrival. The dessert table was loaded with anything we requested plus jars for desserts, slices, cakes, jam donuts, lollies and cheeses. The food was absolutely amazing.”
“Our highlights of the day were having our friends and family there to celebrate love and having a great time; Drag queen performances by our friend Abril La Trene; Fireworks display that lasted about 8 minutes; The incredible food and desert table by Going Gourmet; Fun in the photo booth; The reading by Ellie and Latoya (our close friends) during the ceremony; Excellent speeches by Hugh’s Godfather (Redda), John’s father (Mark), Hugh’s brother and best man (Tom) and John’s Groomsmaid (Sascha).” “We had rain on the day, so had a slight change of plans with the ceremony. We had planned to have the ceremony in front of the wisteria on the 1840’s cottage at Baxter Barn, however last minute moved it to the marquee next to the barn with the rainbow arch and ‘LOVE’ sign as the backdrop. But we didn’t let the rain ruin our day. Our wedding was the best day of our lives and so many people said that they had an amazing time and loved every bit of it. Our recovery the next day was drinks at a good friend’s brewery, Mr Banks. It was a beautiful day with the sun shining. The day before the wedding we had a family rehearsal lunch at Lezzet restaurant for our immediate family members so they could meet and get to know each other before the wedding, as John’s family all travelled from New Zealand.”
“Our advice for anyone planning their wedding is to make it about you and have what you want. Don’t let others tell you what you need to do or have on the day – it is your day not theirs! Have time together away from everything to absorb everything that happens, as it happens so quickly.” “On our honeymoon we had 9 days around Sri Lanka with a guide in a small group followed by 5 days on an island in the Maldives. We had an incredible time and loved every bit of it. Sri Lanka was busy with plenty of tours and activities, then being able to relax and unwind on a tropical island in the Maldives.”
Hugh and John’s Wedding Reading by Ellie & Latoya 4.10.19 When our children started school, one of the first events of the year was Harmony Day... where the class celebrates all the diverse cultures present. Our daughter Brooklyn came home and asked us what ‘culture‘ we were. We explained that we are Australian but that Harmony Day is more for people who have another culture to celebrate. She thought for a minute and then said... ‘Well we are a Rainbow family, is Rainbow our culture?’ Yes! Rainbow is our culture. And one we are proud to be part of.

Being a member of the Rainbow Community is not about the colour of your skin, or your country of birth. It is not about your religion, or the language you speak at home. Alex and Laura Mathie-Marciano were married on 13 September 2019 at Victoria Park, Herston. Alex planned the proposal for six months. Being shift workers, she started writing in a journal every time they were on opposite shifts or away from each other. She wrote notes about funny conversations they had, plans they made and even little disagreements that were usually about her trying to hide any proposal plans. Alex had the ring made in Scotland, where she is from and made sure it had sentimental qualities and was perfect for Laura. On a much anticipated holiday to Tasmania in June 2018, Alex took Laura to the Bay of Fires to watch the sun rise. While they were there, Alex read her last journal entry to Laura and got down on one knee asking her to spend the rest of her life with her. Alex then gave the journal to Laura to enjoy reading about the six months of planning. The rest of the trip was amazing and a few months later Alex came home to Laura to find her reading a letter and down on one knee. Laura didn’t want Alex to miss out on a beautiful engagement ring and also proposed.
“Being in a same-sex relationship with marriage only becoming legal in recent times, there wasn’t a set precedent which made it easy to style our special day exactly how we wanted it. Our colour theme was mauve and silver and we wanted a relaxed approach.” “A highlight was performing a traditional Scottish Handfasting, signifying our family, friends and each other. Also surprising Alex with a bag piper as she went to walk down the aisle.”

Andrew Barr and Anthony Toms were married on 13 November 2019 in a ceremony and reception at Longworth House, Newcastle. “We celebrated our marriage on the 20th anniversary of when we first met and the 10th anniversary of our 2009 ACT Civil Partnership.” Andrew and Anthony met at Canberra’s SpringOUT Pride Festival on the evening of 13 November 1999. Andrew proposed to Anthony over dinner on the Sofitel Private Island at Bora Bora in January 2019. “The wedding theme was Cocktail/Lounge Bar/Speakeasy. It was a relaxed and well planned day that started with a massage and facial, then photos, followed by the ceremony and reception. Nieces and nephews armed with bubble guns created some fabulous photo opportunities.”

Vanessa La Rose and Melanie Cotts were married on 15 March 2019 in Avalon and their reception was held at the Beach House. Vanessa and Mel met in September 2012. “Mel was living and working in Perth and was in Sydney for just a few days for a hen’s party. A mutual friend thought it would be great for us to meet and therefore organised a night out.That night, Mel pretended she had too much to drink just so she could ‘crash at mine’ cheeky cheeky! We connected instantly but at the time I thought it was only going to be a one night hook up type of thing because I was flying to New Zealand the very next day for a holiday and she was going back to her life in Perth. However, when I was at the airport the following day, I wasn’t allowed to fly as I didn’t have the right visa, which meant I had a couple of extra days with Mel before she flew back home - and that changed everything for us! A ‘one night stand’ turned into something much more serious within just a couple of days. Only a short week later, Mel quit her job, packed her life in Perth and moved back to Sydney for good.”

Vanessa described the proposal: “We had been dating for just over two years and were in Mauritius for a holiday, which is where I am originally from. It was Mel’s first visit. We were spending a couple of days in a luxurious resort, Dinarobin Resort, set at the bottom of my favourite mountain in Mauritius, Le Morne. We had an amazing day then went back to the room and had a bubble bath. Mel ordered champagne. We were in our bathrobes, just chilling on the balcony watching the sunset... and then it happened! She reached into the pocket of her bathrobe and started getting all emotional, telling me she wanted to spend the rest of her life with me. At the time, the law had not been passed, so it was more like: ‘When we can finally do it, will you marry me?’ I was in tears... we both were actually! And of course I said ‘Yes’! At that time, it was so uncertain as to when we would be able to get married, but it didn’t matter. We just knew that we would when we could! And five years later, we did!”

“Our theme was Coastal Elegance. Coming from Mauritius and Mel growing up in Newcastle, we both always loved being near the ocean. We wanted a ‘beach wedding’, but without being on the beach. We wanted something elegant without being ‘over the top’. We wanted a coastal vibe, without the tacky beach theme. It was mainly all white with just a subtle splash of aqua tones. Mel is a chef and baked our wedding cake herself. Coming from a tiny island where same sex marriage is still illegal and Mel coming from a GreekItalian background, where it can be a very touchy subject, having both our families not only present, but supportive and genuinely happy on our big day, was definitely THE biggest highlight. Also, Mel and I spent over 24 hours apart before the big day and only saw each other for the first time at the aisle. That moment was very special for both of us. Another highlight of the day was a speech made by my 8 year old nephew on ‘Love is Love’. It was the most beautiful thing and was delivered with such a pure innocence, it really touched all of us.” Hello everybody, My name is Kyle and I am a very happy boy today. It is a happy day for all of us as we are celebrating the union of two beautiful human beings. I remember last time I was in Australia, people had to vote to decide if my Taties (Aunty in French) could get married. I just could not understand! I could not understand why they could not get married like everyone else. I could not understand why people had to vote for such a personal choice. “I (Vanessa) found my wedding dress at Penrith Bridal Centre. It was the very first dress I tried and I loved it straight way. However, it had a massive train and I knew it would annoy me so I decided to have it removed but I didn’t want to waste the fabric. We were trying to think about how we could use it and the lady at the shop suggested a veil or hairpiece but it just wasn’t for us. Mel never wanted to wear a dress, but she also did not want to wear a suit that would look too masculine. So after some thought, we both had the brilliant idea of incorporating my lace into her sleeves so it would add that feminine touch she was after. It would feel like I was with her the whole time prior to the wedding. We literally do everything together and are very rarely apart, so spending the night before our wedding apart was a pretty big deal for both of us. With wedding nerves, we knew we would both struggle being apart, especially with the mobile phone ban we both agreed to have 24 hours prior to the big day. So just having a ‘part of me’ with her at all times gave us a sense of comfort in a weird way that is hard to explain! It sort of represented our union and we just wanted to be linked, even through our outfits! The addition of the lace sleeves was so subtle and yet so special to us. It was hard to find someone to customise Mel’s outfit. I think it was only about six weeks before the wedding that Mel’s sister found Marilena Gabriel who understood what we were after and made our vision come to life. Mel felt like a rockstar that day. She looked absolutely stunning and I remember seeing her for the first time at the end of the aisle on the day thinking OMG she just looks perfect in her outfit. We had kept each other’s outfits a secret until the ceremony.”

Photos were taken at Mount Lofty Botanic Garden. John and Joshua met online. “We had been talking about when we would be ready to decide to get married for many months and when the time came, it was a mutual decision with no surprises. We both knelt down together and made sure we got equal chance to propose to each other at the same time. In the absence of any prepared rings, we used the key rings on our car keys. This led to one of our best friends immortalising our engagement with a painting of those sets of keys linked together.”

“We didn’t really have any theme for the style of our wedding. We wanted to get married at our church. Aside from that, we just wanted to find a nice venue everyone would like and something special for our close family and friends. We did end up having a colour theme and we are really glad we did as it helped with making a lot of decisions and ultimately made the look of the wedding ceremony and reception all come together. We borrowed a friend’s MX5 as our wedding transport. A close family member made our cake.” “Our highlight was the enormous cheers from our friends and family when we were announced as husbands during the ceremony, which really blew us away and made us feel very accepted as a newlywed couple. Another highlight was our photography session with Elise Mezner at the Mt Lofty Botanic Garden. It was a lot of fun and a great opportunity to relax and spend time with just us and the wedding party. Elise made it very easy to feel relaxed and to be able to enjoy the session.”

On the night of our first anniversary, she awkwardly handed me a book (that she had hidden for six months) that talked about all the things she loved about me. Oh, and we had Brazilian barbecue instead of alternate plate drop. The celebrant joked about how she didn’t get a kiss, to which my dad went up, tied our hands, kissed us and kissed the celebrant. Everyone was in stitches and it really lightened the mood.” “We’d given our florist very broad instructions: ‘Pretty with no babies breath!’ Little did we realise, she would make amazing bouquets, arbour florals, ceiling installations and buttonholes. We were beyond impressed with her creations despite our difficult, vague instructions. We were both really laid back about our wedding and it was pretty drama free. We ordered our dresses online (against the advice of... well... everyone) but they turned out great!”

Jae Deane and Shari Bridges were married on 12 October 2019 in a ceremony at the Registry Office, Brisbane. They celebrated with family and friends on 13 October 2019 at Justin Lane Pizza, Burleigh Heads. “Well, it was certainly different how we met... we matched on Tinder! Through talking, we had an immediate connection. I (Shari) simply invited Jae over to my house, no fancy clothes or makeup, no alcohol or fake chats. It was a real honest catch up. We chatted for hours and even joked about getting married and spending the rest of our lives together. The rest is history. We have been, and are, inseparable.” “I had been hinting to Jae that if she asked, I would say ‘yes’. I continued to say things like ‘I can’t wait to be your wife’ and ‘You’re going to be the hottest bride’. Sure enough, Jae proposed. NOTHING WENT TO PLAN for Jae. While riding home one Thursday night (Jae rides a Harley) with ring in bag, she was knocked off her bike. She woke up the next morning realising how precious life really is and just couldn’t wait another moment to ask. She got down on one knee and proposed on the bedroom floor! We cried and laughed and I said ‘YES’.”
Jae wore Country Road pants and button up shirt, Midas leather shoes, Dylan Kain belt, Ksubi scarf, Ksubi neck tie, Cort Jewellery ‘S’ signet ring and Casio watch. Shari wore a Zara one shoulder top, Little Lace (online) skirt, Tony Bianco shoes, Lovisa earrings and a 40 year old sapphire ring from her mother, Leila. They both wore matching Ksubi denim ‘Mrs’ jackets. “My (Shari) highlight was listening to Jae read out her wedding vows. That special moment had everyone in the room captured. Straight from her heart, with every breath, making sure she knew I was at full attention and understanding the severity of her words, all while tears were rolling down her face. That moment will forever be etched into my memory.” “The ceremony really hit home for me (Jae). I was completely overwhelmed with emotions. Standing hand in hand, looking into each other’s eyes and sharing our vows in front of our family, is a memory I will cherish forever.”
“Jae proposed on 23 August 2019 and we were married within 6 weeks. It was important to us to plan something that represented us. We broke all the rules. We didn’t want to wait. It took our family and friends by surprise but it was what we wanted. The wedding day was truly a dream for us both. Jae never wanted to get married but continued to say to me, ‘Shari how could I not marry you?’ The day came together beautifully. The weather was predicted to be the wettest weekend we’d had all year. Sure enough, the morning of the wedding was freezing cold and rainy but by lunch time the rain cleared, blue skies appeared and it was perfect. We couldn’t believe it and felt so lucky. The Registry Office was amazing - elegant, friendly, cost-effective and with floor to ceiling views of Brisbane city!”

Andrew Martin and Anthony Ash were married on 16 March 2019 in a ceremony on the Noosa River, Noosaville followed by a reception at Noosa Boat House. “We met while working for the same hotel chain when we were both 16. Andrew was transferred to another hotel a few years later and we would run into each another with mutual friends.” “It wasn’t until one fateful night on the town when we were heading home together in a cab that we realised we lived only a few blocks away from each other. At the time neither of us were ‘out’ and Anthony was the shy, reserved type and social media didn’t exist! Anthony then went overseas after finishing university and it wasn’t for some time until we coincidentally ran into each other again while working at another hotel.”

“We would joke and laugh whenever we got the chance. We went through the stages of butterflies, fear, joy and ‘roster stalking’ and eventually Anthony worked up the courage to ask Andrew out on a daytime date and as they say, the rest is history.” The proposal was Andrew’s time to shine. “Always the showman, he had planned the day for months. We were on a family trip to Canada and given our love for the outdoors the beautiful spot of Stanley Park, Vancouver was chosen. Strangely looking back on it, the day was very much taking a page out of Snow White. Whilst walking through the park we saw a family of raccoons, gorgeous birds and finally a squirrel which was keen on spending time with us once we got down by Beaver Lake (yes, the actual name of the lake). We stopped to admire the incredible scenery and all of a sudden (as Anthony tells it) Andrew is on one knee asking Anthony to marry him. A ‘yes’ and tears quickly followed.”
“The theme of the wedding was shabby chic. We are both laid back and wanted the wedding to be a simple, fun celebration located in a beautiful beach style setting.” “The entire day was a highlight. There is not one thing we’d do differently. We spent three days welcoming over 100 family and friends who were all there to share in the love and excitement of such a special day. One of the most memorable moments was being able to stand hand in hand with the man you love and express that to the world.” “Our advice for other couples planning their wedding is to ensure the decisions you make are for you and no one else. There is a lot of emotion and expectation around what a wedding ‘should’ look like. If it doesn’t mean anything to you, don’t do it. Best thing about a gay wedding is there is no structure or expectation you have to follow so you get to design the wedding how you want it! Thanks to the support and guidance of our celebrant, she was able to talk us through some of the more stressful moments in the months prior. The range of emotions you go through was very unexpected. Make sure you have a good shoulder to lean on if needed.” “We took three weeks to travel across Spain for our honeymoon.”

Emma and Magdalena Dzambo were married on 28 August 2018 in a ceremony at Caversham House. The reception was held in their home which was transformed into a beautiful venue. Emma and Magdalena met while working as bakers at Bakers Delight. Emma proposed to Magdalena in a hot air balloon over the Hunter Valley Gardens in New South Wales. “Our inspiration for the wedding styling was Victorian. Magdalena wore her maid of honour’s wedding shoes from 10 years ago and her something borrowed was a piece of jewellery which was a family heirloom also belonging to her maid of honour.”
“My (Emma) highlights were getting ready with my mum, dad, brother and my best friend. Having my best friend drive my dad and I to Caversham House in her red 1955 Morris Minor. Arriving at the garden house and seeing a glimpse of my bride waiting at the altar for me. Words cannot describe how beautiful she looked - she was glowing with happiness. Having my dad hold my hand as we walked down the aisle to my beautiful bride. A funny highlight was when I took the ring pillow from our page boy, our gorgeous nephew. I couldn’t get the ribbon undone and I made a joke that maybe it was a sign and everyone laughed. Another highlight was embracing the rain and dancing in the puddles.”

Their ceremony was held on the Annex lawn and their reception followed in the Pump House. “We first met at work when Bec was my direct supervisor. A short time later we reconnected through mutual friends. It was clear there was a connection and we spent most of the night talking. It was through the intervention of these friends that we finally got together.” “We had been together two years when Age proposed with cryptic clues for a treasure hunt. I had just finished a night shift at work and got into the car to receive a phone call telling me there was a clue hiding under my seat. Each clue took me to places which had special meaning to us throughout our relationship - the first place we kissed; the first place we said “I love you”, and the first home we shared together. The last clue took me to the beach - the location of our first date. Age was waiting on the steps of the beach when I arrived. She was so incredibly nervous.”
