Congratulations ADRIANO & ANDY 6 October 2018 Lower Hunter Valley, NSW

Adriano Rabelo and Andy Rohner (Married by Andy, Marriage Celebrant) met six years ago in Hamburg, Germany. “I (Andy) am German but moved to Australia 14 years ago. After I finished my studies in Sydney and started working there, I was sent to Hamburg for work as part of an assignment for up to two years. We saw each other at a LGBT party at Hamburg’s town hall but didn’t speak - only flirted a little! I remember I saw him with his group of friends and Adriano stood out with his brown eyes and amazing hair. I was with my mates and too shy to walk over. The party was more of a fancy affair and people in Hamburg tend to keep to themselves more than in Australia. Luckily, we both went to the same gym and ran into each other here and there. One day we started talking and from there organised a first date. Adriano studied in Germany and landed a job right after Uni so stayed on, however he always wanted to live in Australia, so after my assignment ended, we moved to beautiful Sydney.”

“The proposal was twofold… Four years into the relationship and talking about it here and there, I (Andy) was waiting for it to happen on summer holidays in Vietnam, but it never did! So New Year’s 2016/17, I decided to take it into my own hands. In our relationship there wasn’t really the role of who should ask first... so there were two proposals! In the new year 2017, I organised an engagement ring to propose to Adriano at Mardi Gras in March. It was always a dream of mine to propose at Mardi Gras, amongst love, music and loads of glitter. The best setting, celebrating equal love, surrounded by friends and dressed up to the nines in all colours of the rainbow, glitter everywhere and a great party to celebrate. Little did I know that Adriano was planning on proposing as well and had a ring sent in the mail from London. I beat him to it and proposed on a float surrounded by elves and rams and it was just the most beautiful moment. Adriano actually already planned the proposal for New Years but the ring was made in London and the design and manufacture took longer than expected so it wasn’t ready in time and was still in the mail for Mardi Gras - arriving the Monday after. The second proposal happened in Borneo over the Easter holidays on a beautiful beach at sunset. We stayed at the Shangri-Lah - Rasa Ria, Kota Kinabalu. We had cocktails after a relaxing day by the pool and at sunset, there was Adriano, with a beautiful ring. Why have one proposal when you can have two and celebrate twice!”

“You’ve made me a better man, a stronger man and a more compassionate man. I join my life with yours. Wherever you go, I will go; whatever you face, I will face. I vow to make my life forever yours and build my dreams around you.”

“You showed me true love and true love is alive, every day, every second it breathes in you and through me. Falling for you wasn’t falling at all. It was like walking into a house and suddenly realising I was home. One look at you and my whole life falls into place.”

“We had a three day stint with a BBQ/pizza night on the Friday which worked perfectly and brought everyone together, creating a really nice atmosphere for everyone to get to know each other. On the Saturday people could catch up before the ceremony and there were no strangers. Sunday we had an informal brunch (with left overs and lots of cake) just relaxing at the house with everyone coming and going as they pleased which was a beautiful end to the celebrations before heading home to Sydney. The ceremony was held in the Lower Hunter Valley, Wollombi at a Tuscan style Italian villa called ‘Redleaf ’. The reception was in the barn adjacent to the villa. The barn, which used to be a small Italian restaurant, had a pizza oven and was perfect for our Friday pre-wedding gathering. The overall theme was Rustic Country with native Australian flowers bringing the charm of the property to life. The villa was inspiration for our flower theme and table settings. For the guests, no dark colours, instead light and summery. The grooms wore 2 and 3 piece suits in blue and grey. For our wedding favours we had little shot glasses engraved with the date, our names and a fun tag line ’Take a shot’. These were served after the ceremony on the way to the reception for everyone to have a shot of Patrón XO Café and find out their table name via a small sticker on the glass. As another element we had laser cut wooden names on plates for guests to find their seat and to take home as well. We opted for all online invitations and used ‘appy couple’ to send invitations and receive RSVPs. Worked a treat. ‘Thank you’ via email reduces environmental impact. We had a chat about it and as nice as it is to receive a paper invite / thank you card, we’re not hoarders and always throw them out so it’s really wasted resources. Other stationary items, like the menu and signage, were designed by us and printed via Officeworks. We had a menu for each guest and a few chalk boards for directions and a welcome sign. Music was provided by Global Party People - AMAZING for a dance music wedding reception. We gave them 10 songs we like and they mixed them up beforehand, just perfect for us.”

“Walking down the aisle and the ceremony itself were both very emotional and our guests were also in tears. I (Andy) was a mess and when I walked in and saw all my friends and family, that was it! I cried from the beginning through to the end and the vows were ‘a beautiful mess’. Being a Celebrant, I know ceremonies are very often so different to what we expect or imagine in our childhood dreams, so I always advise my couples to just go with it and be open to the ceremony being something unexpected/different. I was so stressed with the weather and moving it all indoors, but then deciding to go ahead outside as the rain stopped... so when the sun came out during our vows, that was it really for me emotionally. Beforehand I mentioned to our Celebrant that I will most likely be very emotional and if I start to cry, just let me be. Well she did and during our vows I was a crying mess. It was such an incredible moment with the sun coming out right there and then during our vows and seeing my husband-to-be in front of me just as emotional as I was. Even the toughest ‘straight’ boys in the audience were crying! One of the funniest moments was definitely when I took off my suit jacket and had the glitter jacket on underneath for our first dance. Even Adriano didn’t know about it so I quickly put it on under my jacket when he changed his shoes for the first dance. In the music there was a transition to the next song that was perfect for us to dance around each other and take the suit jacket off. That was the plan/choreographed anyway and there I was in the glitter jacket! It was the biggest surprise and all were cheering and clapping lol it was so funny. Another great element was the props for the photobooth which we let everyone use while dancing for fun... the room was a mess the next day with feather boas and glitter everywhere.”

“We initially invited over 120 guests and ended up with 65 due to many coming from overseas. We made sure we gave everyone plenty of notice and sent ‘Save the Date’ notes more than two years ahead for everyone to get organised, save up and plan accordingly. It took lots of chasing of our internationals and even searching for flights etc and was rather stressful. Expectations and reality are often far apart so we put all information online on a personalised website using ‘appy couple’ (an app and website) for all guests to RSVP, find hotels, information, maps etc. It was a great tool to give us an overview of who actually ‘visited’ the website and saw the information. A lot of the overseas guests didn’t make it for many reasons and we learned not to worry too much about the guest list and that the ones who are meant to be there will and others won’t. We had a three months prior ‘cut-off date’ to be able to invite ‘local’ friends which worked well and still gave them three months to get organised. All our Australian friends were there with us. Our tip is to organise lighting for the first dance and to make sure it’ll be filmed either by a videographer or a couple of allocated friends.” “After honeymooning in Brazil, we spent New Year’s Eve in Rio with Adriano’s family and then travelled around that beautiful country to see the Igacu Falls, Petropolis, Florianopolis, Belo Horizonte, Buzios and Cabo Frio.”

Congratulations KRISTEN & KATE

30 September 2018 Brisbane, QLD

“Kate and I met three years ago on a very warm summer’s evening in Brisbane after being set up on a blind date! I wasn’t feeling very hopeful that the date would be a success to be honest (dating is hard!). But work was busy that week and I thought, even if the company is no good – wine! We agreed to meet at Riverbar and as I approached, I could see that Kate was already sitting there (I knew it was her straight away from my extensive Facebook stalking, obviously) wine in hand, relaxed and prompt - how refreshing!” “Now, my experience of first dates is that they’re awkward, at best. Questions like: ‘So you’re a [insert relevant profession here], do you like being a [blank]? ‘Do you have any brothers or sisters?’ ‘Where did you grow up? ‘What school did you go to?’ ‘What do you like to do in your spare time?’ This list of - oh! so boring - icebreaker questions goes on. With Kate, I don’t remember a single one of those questions being asked. We met, and it felt instantly comfortable, like we were where we were meant to have been all along. She was so warm, funny and confident (in that effortless way which lets you know that person is just comfortable with who they are), smart – really smart, with a smile that lights up her entire face. She is the type of person who makes you feel better just for being around her. Someone once asked me to describe Kate in three words and it was very simple... she is happiness.” “Our first date (likened to our entire relationship), really was a whirlwind and the hours flew by because being in each other’s company was simply a pleasure. I didn’t want it to end. Neither did she. This was different, and we both knew it. Nothing has changed since that warm summer’s night, but we sure have packed a lot into our relationship. It was like when we met, life really began, in a way that we could have only ever imagined. I knew I wanted to marry Kate from the moment I met her, but of course I played it cool (just kidding, I didn’t at all, absolutely everyone knew I was mad about her). We planned a trip to Tasmania in July 2017. Kate was really excited about it, and I thought, what a perfect time to propose. I knew she wasn’t expecting it and I wanted to surprise her. Kate is such a thoughtful person, I wanted to do something just for her, that would be so special she would remember it forever. I asked for her Mum and Dad’s permission before we went, which I’m pleased to report was happily given.”

Kate’s highlight: “How glorious Kristen looked the first moment I saw her.” Kristen’s highlight: “Peeking around the corner to see Kate for the first time and hear the crowd cheering for her, like only Kate could manage!”

“Our bridesmaids wore dresses from a variety of designers. Each bridesmaid chose their own outfit based on their personal style and taste.”

“With the help of some very lovely strangers, my plan was in place. I suggested to Kate that we get some photos taken whilst we were down in Tassie, after all the scenery is stunning and we bought our house at the end of 2016 and still didn’t have anything to hang on the walls. Kate agreed it was a good idea. The morning of the proposal, we woke up to a winter wonderland. I also woke up with the flu – what timing! Kate couldn’t understand why I was so upset that I was so unwell, after all we were just going to have a couple of pictures taken and then go to lunch. She suggested we just cancel. Of course this was not an option in my books, so Sudafed and tissues in hand, we left for the photos – perhaps it was just ‘in sickness and in health’ starting early! After a couple of photos, the photographers (who were sneakily in on my plan) suggested that we visit Willie Smith’s Apple Shed. A beautiful old shed on an apple orchard in the Huon Valley, normally open to the public, but on that day, open just for us. I was shaking with nerves - Kate thought I was cold, so she took my hand. It was clammy (which I conveniently blamed on my fever) and she was none the wiser that we were about to walk into a beautiful setting just for her. We walked in, there were candles and fairy lights everywhere and on the table, a letter addressed to Kate. It was my proposal. Of course I had learnt it off-by-heart, but I wanted her to have it to keep. There’s something romantic about handwriting and writing notes and letters to each other has always been an important part of our relationship.” “Our favourite songs were playing in the background and after a few tears, me asking Kate the all-important question and presenting her with a diamond ring which was designed just for her, it was a resounding ‘yes’. We drank champagne and enjoyed the moment, before heading off to Frogmore Creek Winery for a long lunch. The food was incredible and the company even better. We were thrilled to share the news with family and friends, who shared in our excitement. It was then that our real mission began. Soon after we got engaged, marriage equality hit the headlines and the campaign for a ‘yes’ vote began. We played an active role in the campaign and I am so proud to have had someone like Kate by my side through it all. We were fighting for each other. Our friends and family were fighting for us, and for our community. It was something we will never forget.”

Kate Wildermuth and Kristen Watt were married on 30 September 2018. “Kate’s grandma was one of our witnesses, which was really special to both of us. Kristen’s 11 year old cousin, who had fiercely advocated for marriage equality, also spoke at the ceremony, as did both of our brothers, who were also our ring bearers! It absolutely bucketed down rain on our wedding day, only to clear as we were driving in the wedding cars to the ceremony, so hopefully that means good luck! Some of our many highlights were the moment when we held hands and saw each other for the first time in front of everyone who is dear to us; the confetti cannons perfectly timed to ‘Love is in the Air’ as we walked down the aisle in celebration once we were married; Kate’s grandmother signing our wedding certificate and the speeches made by our friends and family. They spoke to equality and summed us up so brilliantly. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house.

We chose ‘The Time is Now’ by Moloko for our first dance - it is Kate’s favourite song and we both love the lyrics. We went on a bit of a crazy honeymoon, but we wanted to tick off some of the places we both really wanted to go together... so we went to Santorini, London, Bordeaux and St Emilion in France and New York City (where we were lucky enough to see Elton John!). Our newlywed advice is to enjoy the process and all the little moments along the way that you get to experience with the people you love. Those moments are just as much fun as the day itself, because the day goes by in a flash!”

CELEBRANT Sophie Cleary of Macushla Weddings. “Sophie wrote us the most personal and wonderful ceremony we had ever heard. We sobbed the first time we read it and cried some more on the day. It had the perfect balance of tenderness, emotion, purpose and hilarity. Many people since our ceremony have commented that it was one of the best ceremonies they’ve ever been to, so we are very, very grateful that Sophie made it so brilliant. She is a lovely friend and very clever lady!” CEREMONY Toowong Rowing Club. RECEPTION AND CAKES Wild Canary, Brookfield. We gave her no instructions and just knew that what she would create would be beautiful, and it really was!” STYLING AVIdeas (and the couple). We adore our rings and they are featured on his website.”

Congratulations BRADY & PATRICK 20 October 2018 Hahndorf, SA

Brady Camac and Patrick Griffiths met at a mutual work event. “Although sitting next to each other, very little was spoken at the time given the event was a fashion launch which left little opportunity to engage in conversation. The week following the event, several work colleagues organised a dinner, however cancelled one by one, leaving the two of us to an intimate dinner how convenient! The rest is history. We have been together almost 7 years.

“Brady proposed in the Adelaide Hills. It was a warm spring morning and he appeared relatively distracted and perhaps a little over heated. As we made our way along the walking trail, he began picking some flowers. I was completely unaware that he was making a daisy ring which he ended up using when he proposed. I absolutely said ‘YES’.”

“The ceremony and reception were held at Seasonal Garden Café, Hahndorf. We wanted a beautiful spring garden wedding. Ideas that came to mind were festoon lights, wine barrels with market umbrellas, stunning garden surrounds, beautiful food with local produce and most of all, a lot of dancing. Many inspirations were taken from Pinterest. We opted to wear different suits and the groomsmaids wore white dresses. We had a vision to have a simple yet stylish wedding. We both love rustic and chic styles and given the venue was a garden, we didn’t want to take away from the beautiful surrounds. The whole day was a highlight for us. The love and energy from our guests - we were on ‘cloud 9’ for weeks after our wedding day. Everything from Patrick saying ‘I do’ too early... to dancing under the marquee with hundreds of fairy lights draped from the ceiling - it was the best day of our lives. We are planning a trip to the US for our honeymoon.”

“Our advice to anyone planning a wedding is to start planning early. Choose your wedding style and stick to it. I absolutely loved planning our wedding. I love interior design and fashion and I am a bit of a perfectionist, which helps. Compromise and ensure that you share the same wedding vision as one another. We are both very similar, however did have some different ideas which injected our individual styles into the wedding.

Congratulations JAMES & JASE 20 October 2018 Melbourne, VIC

Jase and James Case met on Instagram. “James is into cars and at the time I had a BMW X3 and he started to follow me. I saw his photos and thought ‘what a hottie!’ and then, after a few likes from me, I got a friend request on Facebook from him and we started to chat. After months of chatting we thought it was time to meet. I got him to pick me up, as I lived not far from him. We went on our date to the 1000 steps and then to the beach... and ended up going to dinner and a movie.” “The proposal happened on Christmas morning 2016. We were still in bed. I (Jase) pulled out the ring and asked ‘Would you like to spend the rest of your life with me?’ and James said ‘Yes’. As we were hosting Christmas at our house with most of our family and some friends attending, we announced that we were getting married!”

“The wedding was held on the Pool Deck at Rydges on Swanston in Melbourne. We had a cocktail wedding as we are not the formal type and wanted the reception to be more like a party! A highlight was having both sides of the family and friends coming together to celebrate.” “Our advice for anyone planning a wedding is to breathe! Take a moment as the day will be busy and don’t forget to eat.” “We are taking a 10-day cruise to New Caledonia, Noumea, Mare and Isle of Pines for our honeymoon”

Congratulations KARA & BEC 26 January 2019 Melbourne, VIC

Kara and Bec met while they were working together. “I can’t explain it! Bec was someone I felt I needed to get to know from the moment she arrived at my office. Our careers are in totally different worlds, however for a few years we were lucky enough to work for the same organisation... by sheer luck or fortune! Bec often talks about things happening for a reason and I think we were brought together from two different worlds for a reason, neither looking for a relationship or love, but we certainly found it! In the words of our favourite song: ‘She’s got this thing about her’.”

“Bec proposed on 26th January 2018 while we were camping. We were enjoying some peace and wine and cheese. The song ‘Perfect Duet’ had just finished playing. She got a bag from the car and said she had a present for me. Inside was the most gorgeous book, filled with photos of us, quotes and song lyrics. At the back of the book was a pocket with notes which read: ‘Will you marry me?’ She had also (without my knowledge) designed, and had made, two beautiful antique style rings - mine with a purple sapphire and hers with a dark blue sapphire. Through tears I of course said ‘Yes’ and we realised that just across the other side of the bay was the most stunning sunset. We ran for it and caught the final second or two. Bec was really upset and worried that we missed it, but to me, it just made me laugh and love her that little bit more. It’s not about what we see but that I get to see (or miss) it with her. That is the most important thing!” “Our ceremony was barefoot on the beach. The reception was held at the Sandbar Beach Cafe at Middle Park. The ocean is our happy place! We wanted everyone to look smart but also have that ‘beach vibe’ so we asked them to come dressed in ‘beach formal’. We wanted everyone to remember that even though it was a same-sex wedding, it was still ‘a wedding’ and to mark the occasion as you would any other. We also wanted to relax and enjoy ourselves! We used a lot of small and start up businesses. I’d much rather help out someone starting out than a big corporation. We were so happy with everyone that we chose to help us celebrate our day. They were all fantastic and a pleasure to deal with.”

“The ocean is our happy place.”

“We had the most stunning sunset you could imagine. It really was the icing on the cake of what was the most memorable and magical day! Our ceremony was beautiful, by the water with all our friends and family. Being able to stand in front of everyone and let them know how much I love this amazing woman was a highlight. I stood back towards the end of the night and in the words of one of our guests, it was just a truly ‘happy’ occasion. At 11:30pm the venue was still buzzing, everyone was laughing, smiling, singing and dancing and that is something that makes me so happy and proud to have had everyone share, celebrate and enjoy our day so tremendously!”

“Our advice to anyone planning a wedding is to do things your way, not because you are told to or feel that you should. It’s easy to get caught up in the moment and the hype, and begin to organise chair covers and place settings, but we made sure we only did things because they held meaning to us and because we wanted to! We searched for the reason behind a lot of traditions and if they weren’t important to us, we left them out, or did it our way. We asked our siblings to walk us in, as a way of bringing our families together. We had one of each of our parents be our witness as two people who have supported us and our relationship from day one. We got ready together and it made the day so much fun. We had our photos prior to the ceremony, as a way of relaxing beforehand but also so we didn’t have to leave the reception. We didn’t spend a lot on things that weren’t important to us, but we asked the venue to recreate things that we love. They made Espresso Martinis for everyone to start the evening and I arranged a gelato cart for Bec and we got Donuts in for me!” “Our ‘mini moon’ was a few days getaway to Tasmania after the wedding. We are off on an amazing ‘Mega Moon’ later in the year to Egypt, Jordan, Turkey, Greek Islands and Copenhagen. Travel is a big part of our lives and something we both love to do, so what better way to begin our life as wife and wife!”

Congratulations NATHAN & RUSS 3 November 2018 Uki, NSW

Nathan Benson met Russ Tolland at the gym. “We exchanged many glances before eventually plucking up the courage to say hello to each other. We have been inseparable ever since, except for when Russ has been deployed on exercise with the army. He had been away for three months and more recently, deployed for six months to the Middle East. Over the past year, even though we have spent some time apart, we have seen our love continually grow and we knew very early on that we would marry.”

“I took Russ away to Byron Bay for a special weekend for his birthday. As Russ speaks fluent French (he lived in France for six years), I took him to a beautiful French restaurant to celebrate. The evening was perfect. After giving him the rest of my creme brûlée dessert (something I would only ever share with my true love!), Russ asked me if I would make him happy by sharing the rest of my life with him, to which I cried for approximately five minutes before responding, ‘Yes I will’. While the Same Sex Marriage survey results were still to be released, we knew we wanted an event to share with family and friends here in Australia, regardless of the result. The results of the survey were released the day after Russ left Australia, which was very emotional as I could not celebrate with him. We always said, regardless of the outcome, we would still have a ceremony to share the moment with friends and family. With the great results released, we were very excited that we were able to have our own wedding, equal in love, and now, equal in law.“

“We booked Preston Peak Winery in Toowoomba for our 1 December 2018 wedding. Then began the exciting, yet daunting, task of coordinating all the small details of the wedding with more than 13,000 kms between us. In November 2017, Russ was deployed for six months to Iraq where, as an army physio, he provided physiotherapy services to the ADF and coalition forces. Over the six months, I focused on work, home life with our two boys, Roger and Barry (beagles) and my training to become a Les Mills RPM instructor.

“On our wedding day, we celebrated with friends and family from Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Tweed Heads, Ballarat and France. We chose ‘We Are Family’ for our first dance and had everyone up dancing. As all our family and friends are considered one family, we wanted to have our first dance all together.” VENUE Preston Peak Winery Function Centre CELEBRANT Carmen Dillon, Marriage Celebrant, Cloud Nine Ceremonies PHOTOGRAPHY & VIDEOGRAPHY Unveil Films & Photography ATTIRE InStitchu INVITATIONS Enklo FLOWERS AND STYLING Madonna, Elegant Weddings CAKE Jill-i-cious Cakes FIREWORKS AND CONFETTI Fuse Pyrotechnics MUSIC Bassline Studios Band TRANSPORT Stonestreets

“Our newlywed advice is to take your time and plan. You will change your mind 10 times on almost everything, except there will be some things that are perfect from the start, go with your gut. Let the natural organiser go over and over the details as much as they like... ‘too many chefs spoil the broth!’ Don’t worry about everyone else - if they are truly going to the wedding for you, they will be happy, wherever they sit, whatever the food, whatever the location. Keep speeches short - we did and everyone was thankful. Don’t be afraid to break tradition. Do what you want, how you want to do it. We had a dinner/get together the night before, which meant when everyone arrived on the big day, they had already met and were relaxed. (Make sure there is an end time..LOL.) Our ceremony went for less than 40 mins and it was perfect. If possible, have the ceremony and reception close together. Don’t spend hours taking photos away from everyone - take them with everyone! Our highlights were our vows, the main dance, the amazing fireworks and the speeches. For our honeymoon, we went on a romantic winter holiday to Montreal, Quebec, Skiing in Banff and Vancouver.”

Congratulations SCOTT & MARK ENGAGEMENT Younghusband, SA

Scott Crump and Mark Bess met over 12 years ago. “Everything was going good, though Mark wasn’t really ready for a relationship. We lost touch for many years and had thought about each other during this time. One evening we were both online and Mark sent me a message for a chat and we caught up for a drink. To be honest, he never let on who he really was, and I only realised who he was after I started walking through his house. Then we started dating and fell into a loving relationship, which happened four years ago. We purchased an investment property in June 2018, which is available on Airbnb. We planned to have a house-warming party with our closest friends and Mark was planning a surprise announcement, which our friends (and myself) knew nothing about! We had lunch on the deck overlooking the river and the next minute I received a gift from Mark and a beautiful card with heartfelt words, ending with: ‘Will you marry me?’. In shock, I turned around and he was down on one knee proposing in front of all our closest friends. I said ‘Yes’ immediately, with no hesitation. Our wedding is planned for November 2019 at Riverview House (our property) for a garden ceremony and cocktail reception overlooking the River Murray upstream from Mannum.” Photos: Valentina Perez, Valentina Perez Imaging

Congratulations LESLEY & JULIA 1 December 2018 Sydney, NSW

Lesley Ngatai and Julia Lehman met at Mardi Gras 2000. “Julia was visiting from Texas and we met at a community group where she spoke briefly. I thought she was SO exotic! I invited her to Manly with me the next day. We caught the ferry so I could show her the magnificent harbour. It grew from there. She returned to Texas to settle her affairs and came back so we could be together. It was a huge leap of faith to leave behind everything she knew and cross the planet to be with someone she’d known for three months. It took five years of immigration hoops before Julia could finally officially stay. We couldn’t have survived the stress without the support of the Gay & Lesbian Immigration Task Force.”

“We were actually married before our ‘wedding’. We had been together for 17 years and were staying in a hotel for a few months. We had been talking about marriage and one morning Julia said to me: ‘The Rabbi has a 15 minute window to marry us and he’ll be here in two hours.’ My response was very ungracious: ‘Well I wish I had some warning, I might have liked to buy an outfit!’ The Rabbi came and we were married on the couch in the living room. Julia wore the top part and I the bottom of a beautiful pair of oriental pyjamas. Our witness was an old friend who had arrived from Rome that week and was staying in the same hotel. We woke her up she was so jet lagged we had to ask staff to open her door! She was in her pyjamas and socks for the ceremony. Our other witness was the most beautiful gay man from the hotel reception. He took lots of photos and videos and cried. Later he showed them to the staff who also cried and sent us a beautiful bouquet of flowers. We were the first wedding at the Meriton Mascot. We later took an apartment next door to the hotel and the hotel staff have become a bit like family.”

“The ceremony was on The Palm House Lawn and the reception was at The Palm House, The Royal Botanic Garden, Sydney. The theme of the wedding was ‘NZ Maori and Jewish’: NZ Maori - tree ferns and silver ferns for the greenhouse, a haka, pounamu (NZ jade) rings and flax top (hat woven by a Maori weaver). Jewish - Rabbi celebrant, Chuppah canopy, breaking of the glass, Kiddushin (Jewish betrothal blessing with wine), Ketubah (illuminated marriage scroll), Erev Shel Shoshanim (evening of roses) played by cellist from ACO. The overall theme was classic elegance - black and white for brides and white, green, purple for florals.” “Our highlights were the Haka, the Chuppah - being carried in by our son and granddaughter, the brides’ entrances and the surprise Cellist from ACO.”

“Our advice to anyone planning a wedding is to get a planner! If you can, spend the money, but do it without regret. These are memories that will last forever for both you and your friends and family. It’s a life-shifting event.” “We spent our honeymoon at the Prince of Wales Hospital where I (Lesley) had gone for a procedure and had to remain for two weeks! Not very romantic, but Julia never left my side the entire time. I realised what real love and devotion, and true commitment is.”

Congratulations DAVID & LLOYD 14 April 2018 Brisbane, QLD

David Murry and Lloyd Hodgkinson met after being set up at a small gathering by Lloyd’s best friend, Tys. “He will, of course, take credit for the fact that the wedding happened lol! That night was so much fun. We drank with friends until 5am, listening to trashy pop music. That night we had our first kiss and Lloyd had his first sleep over. When we first met, Lloyd was living at Hotel Hodgkinson (at home with his mother) so he spent nights at my little apartment in Teneriffe, where we would eventually live together for four years. They were the most exciting, fun times and we have so many fond memories of both crazy parties, recovery days with the blinds closed and air-conditioner on high, and also many quiet nights in, which usually involved me cooking and Lloyd watching me cook. The Teneriffe days are when we started collecting things together, sharing our personal goals with each other and building a life together. I don’t feel like we really ever dated. The nights that Lloyd was staying over started the moment we finished work at 5:30pm with me walking down Brunswick Street towards Fortitude Valley and Lloyd walking down Brunswick Street towards New Farm and we would meet half way. Neither of us had a car so we would walk past Coles and buy ingredients to make dinner and after dinner we would drink wine and listen to albums like The Con by Tegan and Sarah and anything by Sarah Blasko. I opened David Murry Salon in 2011 and we moved into Lloyd’s mum’s place in 2012 to save for our house. We bought Bracken Manor (the name everyone knows our house by) in 2015 and finally opened Oliver Mark Interiors in 2017. During our 11 years together, we have travelled to England several times, Paris, The Kingdom of Bahrain, Egypt, Turkey, and most recently Italy. We stayed in Italy for a month and became engaged while overlooking The Amalfi Coast in Ravello at a hotel of Lloyd’s choosing (which we are still paying off). I learned right back in the beginning that Lloyd likes the finer things and that one day he was going to be ‘one hell of an expensive husband’. I had spent months secretly flicking cash to Lesley (Lloyd’s mum) who used it to pay for a beautiful timepiece which I had chosen for Lloyd at Hardy Brothers.

“We were married in Lloyd’s mother’s garden and the theme was ‘Garden Party Wedding’. With Lloyd being an Interior Designer, it was very important for the garden space to feel as though it was another beautiful room leading from the house onto the patio and to the garden area where the event was to take place. Along with our own personal touches, we enlisted the help of Brendan Cummings and his team from Styled Events to install sitting areas and plenty of furniture for people to mingle around. We have been working with and recommending Lillipollen to all our clients and friends for seven years and they never disappoint. Their style is varied and the floral arrangements are always generous. A good friend and guest at our wedding, Kylie Mann made the wedding cake. She has made cakes for all the significant events in our lives since we met over 12 years ago. A clear marquee was strung with lighting for guests to see out to the night’s sky. Large trees on the property were up-lit and the lilly pilly hedge was captured in a net of fairy-lights, creating a sparkling wall to enclose the event and making it feel private and intimate.”

“Tom Burke and his team at Caxton Street Catering took charge of the catering at the David Murry Salon opening in 2011. They were fantastic to work with and the food impressed everyone, so the choice was easy when it came to choosing a caterer for our wedding. Three carefully curated playlists for arrival, during the even and dancefloor fillers were enjoyed throughout the evening. The music caters to all ages, with everything from classics like ‘I Wanna Make Love To You’ by Etta Jones, to recent tracks like ‘Can’t Feel My Face’ by The Weekend, right through to dance floor fillers like ‘Crazy in Love’ by Beyonce & JAY Z. Our highlight was definitely the speeches. There are not many occasions in one’s life where you get the opportunity to hear what those who mean the most to you value about your friendships as individuals and as a couple.” “Our advice for anyone planning a wedding is keep it small so you can splurge on the things that are important to you, not to others. Have someone video your speeches. It doesn’t have to cost the earth, we simply had our photographer set up a hand-held camera on a tripod. It wasn’t important to us to have a full video production edited to music, but it was important for us to preserve what people said on the day. Consider a private property or a property that lets you party past 11pm for your reception. Have fun! We spent our honeymoon at the Mulia Resort in Bali for seven blissful nights.”

Congratulations STEPHEN & PAUL 6 October 2018 Brisbane, QLD

Stephen Servos and Paul Richardson met through the powers of Facebook back in 2014, through a general comment made on Facebook that turned into an over 2-hour conversation on the phone. “I (Paul) proposed to Stephen on the Big Wheel of Brisbane at South Bank. I am someone that doesn’t do heights at all. I was more worried about the hairpins coming out of the bolts! The proposal went ‘ok’ but I had to tell Stephen to stop talking as he is a bit of a chatter box. He continued chatting, so I grabbed his hand and said: ‘Stephen will you marry me?’. He was a bit gobsmacked at first and then said ‘YES’. For the rings we had our civil union bands with a bit of bling added (a diamond that been passed on to be used in our bands).”

“We organised our day together as a couple with the help of family and close friends. The ceremony was held in the New Farm Park Rotunda and the reception was at the Brunswick Hotel in New Farm. We had a laidback theme this time around (as now we have married each other twice), first our Civil Union and then our marriage. We just wore suits and tops and very casual attire being the end of Spring. The cake was a 2-tier red velvet cake with white chocolate filling by Magnolia Cake Boutique. Our highlight was the appearance of our dear friends from Melbourne - The Magical Act, The Illusionists.” “Our advice to anyone planning their wedding is to make your day ever so special by planning it together and ticking boxes off as you go. ‘Love is Love’ to all.” “We honeymooned in Noosa on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast for four nights.”

Congratulations KAYLA & SHARNA 29 September 2018 McLaren Vale, SA

“We met in 2010 playing softball together. Unknown to us, we had been playing for the same club for years. It wasn’t until 2010 that our paths crossed and a friendship developed. Kayla moved to Canberra early 2011 and we kept in touch. We quickly went from sharing a few texts here and there to long phone calls. Kayla came back to Adelaide to visit a few times and each time we would catch up, our friendship grew stronger. After a visit in April, we realised our friendship was turning into something so much more and to my surprise, Kayla told me she wanted to come back to Adelaide and see where our relationship went (yay!).”

“Kayla proposed to me in February 2016 at the end of one of her softball games. She had her entire team walk onto the diamond holding a letter each, spelling ‘Will you marry me?’. Kayla was waiting on one knee at home plate with a ring in her hand. Caught me completely off guard but it was absolutely perfect.” “Our ceremony and reception were held at Beach Road Wines, McLaren Vale. We just wanted an ‘easy, relaxed’ vibe. Weddings are supposed to be a ‘refined’ version of yourself and what better way to spend a Saturday night than with pizza, beer, cider and those we love the most! We went with a boho/rustic vibe and just wanted a fun night with dancing and good company. We did all the organising ourselves and of course we had help from our bridal parties. Jo, the wedding co-ordinator at Beach Road Wines, was in charge of set up. She met with us to see what we wanted, gave us a few suggestions and really did an amazing job creating our dream wedding! We had friends drive us up to the ceremony - we wanted easy and it was great to have a relaxing drive.”

“Aside from seeing Kayla and actually becoming her wife, my highlight was when one of our guests sang the ENTIRE Bohemian Rhapsody! When Kayla and I were organising the wedding song list for our DJ (who was amazing!), we added ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ to the list with the request that the DJ make a special mention to Jane, a guest, who is well known for loving that song. We expected Jane to have a laugh, but she exceeded our expectations and got the dance floor going! She took the microphone with pride and lifted the crowd. She certainly didn’t disappoint.”

“Our advice to anyone planning a wedding is to remember the day is about the two of you and your love for one another. It’s so easy to get caught up in what you think ‘must’ be done or how a wedding should be, but there really aren’t any rules. Everyone is there to celebrate the love you have for one another. At the end of the day, people don’t talk about how your venue didn’t sell the brand of alcohol they wanted or the colour of your flowers. They talk about how beautiful it is to see people in love. Enjoy the planning!” “We honey mooned in Fiji. It was so nice to have a week of relaxing and laying on the warm beaches. Fijian people are so friendly!”

Congratulations TODD & DAVID

27 October 2017 Legal Wedding Ceremony Auckland Registry Office, New Zealand 27 October 2018 Anniversary Party Loxley on Bellbird Hill, Kurrajong Hills, NSW

Todd Hammond and David Petersen found each other via a dating app in 2014. “We talked for two weeks before meeting at a cafe in Parramatta. We talked for hours and by the end of the date, we both knew there was something there so we organised a second date.

“We went to Hawaii for our first overseas holiday together to celebrate our second anniversary. I (Todd) had already told some close friends and family what I was planning to do on this holiday. Though I hadn’t planned exactly where I would propose, I knew it would happen at the right moment. However, potential options fell through - a helicopter ride to a waterfall was cancelled, a hiking trip to another waterfall was further along the trail than expected and it would have been dark when we got there. Then we visited Mauna Kea and although we were unable to go to the peak safely as the winds were so strong, on the way down the mountain we stopped at a lookout to take photos. As we were standing there, the clouds rolled in below us and exposed the peaks of smaller mountains. It was so beautiful and peaceful - I knew this was the moment. I got down on one knee and proposed.”

“The theme for our anniversary party was very much inspired by the rural location, spring weather and classic style which we love. As we had eloped a year earlier, our family weren’t there to see it happen, so we renewed our vows and I finally got to give my husband the wedding ring he had always wanted. Dave’s ring was custom made by a family friend of ours and is particularly sentimental as it was made from Dave’s mother’s wedding ring. She passed before I could meet her. My highlight was giving Dave his long-awaited wedding ring. Another key highlight was having our first dance. When we eloped, we had our engagement party the next day but there wasn’t a dance floor so we had our first dance a year later. We had the best time working with our photographer and dancing the night away with our friends and family.”

“Our advice to anyone planning a wedding is take your time and follow your heart when looking for the ideal venue. Be involved in all stages of the preparation and communicate openly with each other about what kind of wedding you want. Be honest with each other and learn to compromise when needed. It isn’t the wedding or the party that matters, it’s the two of you and your love for each other. We are planning to honeymoon in Japan.”

Congratulations DONALD & KELVIN 22 September 2018 Brisbane, QLD

Donald Daniels and Kelvin Chey met online in 2010. Don was living in Bangkok after working in Papua New Guinea and Kelvin was an auditor in Kuala Lumpur. They physically met a few months later at Bangkok Airport. Kelvin was travelling from Kuala Lumpur, where he lived, to have a holiday in Bangkok. Don was going to Siem Reap in Cambodia. After a brief encounter, and stars in their eyes, Kelvin changed his plans and went with Donald and the rest is history.

A long distance cross borders relationship was difficult, but not impossible. For a year, Don flew to KL or Kelvin flew to Bangkok nearly every weekend. “It cost a fortune in airfares! Eventually, we knew we were made for each other and we planned a long holiday to Europe and Canada with a commitment ceremony on 12 January 2012 aboard the Celebrity Century between New Zealand and Australia. Royal Caribbean told us it was the first same-sex ceremony ever. We were sure the Captain had a lot to tell his wife and 16 bambinos when he returned to Greece. At the time, our marriage was not being recognised anywhere and we decided to apply for permanent residency in Australia, finally arriving in Brisbane in January 2017. We were at Queens Park in Brisbane when the plebiscite results came through and immediately rushed to the Kookaburra Showboat Cruises office to book the paddlewheeler for the following September.

“We had a bucks/hens night at Satay Ria in Fortitude Valley, complete with Chinese lion dancers. Our ceremony and reception were on board the Kookaburra Queen paddlewheeler cruising the Brisbane River. We chartered the whole vessel. It was so wonderful to see the rainbow flag fluttering in the breeze. Incredibly, the Story Bridge was also lit up in rainbow colours, as it was Brisbane Pride week.

“We went to a wedding expo a few weeks after the vote and met our future wedding coordinator, Aldrian of Clipboard Perfect Happenings. He arranged everything from decorations, flowers and favours to coordinating our celebrant, the band, the photographer and the Kookaburra Queen staff. On the day, friends flew in from all over the world - England, Canada, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea and New Zealand - 130 wonderful friends to share our joy. Our Marriage Celebrant, Julie was as nervous as we were but she did a brilliant job, even vacuuming the red carpet. Kelvin and I and our witnesses were hidden below deck and made the appropriate entrance to loud applause. Our first dance was ‘Proud Mary’ after Tina Turner, and we practised for months. Very appropriate on a paddlewheeler we thought! The whole day was a blur of happiness.”

“Our advice to anyone planning a wedding is don’t attempt to do it all on your own. Use the services of a good events planner, as we did, and the pressure will be relieved. Our honeymoon was spent cruising from Singapore to Shanghai on the Sapphire Princess”. VENUE Kookaburra Showboat Cruises CELEBRANT Julie Rudd, Marriage Celebrant, Nambour. Congratulations JOHN & PAUL 28 October 2018 Sydney, NSW

John and Paul initially became friends on Facebook in 2016 through John’s brother, who was the mutual connection. “A few months later, I took a short holiday to Brisbane and Paul offered to act as the tour guide. There was an instant attraction and we realised we shared similar values. We were both smitten, love blossomed and a serious relationship developed.”

“We had a civil partnership in March 2017 which was the first step in our life-long commitment to each other. As the marriage equality campaign was taking place at the end of 2017, there was uncertainty as to the outcome but we were hopeful. When the results were announced and we heard the good news, we were filled with happiness knowing that we would be making the ultimate vows to each other. Almost straight after, we started planning for the wedding.

“We were married in Sydney, although we live in Brisbane, because many of our close family members and relatives live in and around Sydney. We also had family members, relatives and friends who were coming from interstate and overseas so Sydney was perfect from that point of view. The ceremony was held at an old scout hall on Watsons Bay which was previously a public school from the 1800s. It is a charming stone building now called The Gunyah, under Woollahra Council. Watsons Bay was Australia’s first fishing village. Our reception was at Watsons Bay Boutique Hotel which has a laid-back harbourside vibe, retaining that village feel right by the water. This was exactly what we were looking for. We wanted a relaxed wedding by the harbour with just a touch of elegance, and we were also inspired by Harry and Meghan’s royal wedding. We would describe our wedding as ‘English garden meets the Hamptons on Sydney Harbour’. Melissa Murray, our stylist and Jane Lampe, our florist did an amazing job with their creativity. Stephen Lee, Marriage Celebrant, married us in a beautiful and meaningful ceremony. We exchanged traditional wedding vows as these resonated deeply with us.”

“Some of our wedding highlights were the 1960s Red London Bus that we hired to transport guests between the ceremony and reception, which everyone loved riding on. The children couldn’t get enough of the photo booth and we loved the rousing Asian-style toast that some of our overseas friends raised. It was a wonderful celebration for all and everyone’s still talking about our wedding.” “Our advice for anyone planning a wedding is don’t worry if you have to compromise on some ideas due to resource, time or cost constraints. In the end it won’t matter. Our wedding day was still the most perfect day because of the love we have for each other and the joy and happiness our family and friends felt for us. We spent our honeymoon at the Hydro Majestic Hotel in the Blue Mountains.”

Congratulations ANN & CAROLINE 11 August 2018 Port Augusta, SA

Ann Johnston met Caroline McHugh through Caroline’s previous partner. “After we had separated, Ann re-introduced herself to me. A couple of months later, she asked me to go on a date, 18th April 1993, and that’s when we started our relationship.” “Ann proposed to me one night at Ian’s Western Hotel. We were having dinner and she was acting a little strange, and I said anyone would think you are going to ask me to marry you! Ann said as a matter of fact that’s exactly what I am about to do. Out came the beautiful ring that was made from Ann’s mum’s sapphires and gold, made by Geldarts Jewellers here in Port Augusta. Of course, I said ‘yes’. Once same-sex marriage became legal, Ann had left the decision to get married up to me, so out of the blue one day I said let’s get married between our birthdays - Ann’s 7th August and mine 13th August - so we did. I gave her four months to organise the wedding.”

“We are both individuals but become a power of one when supporting each other.”

“Our wedding was a simple affair. We had marquees in our backyard, which added onto our outdoor area. We invited approx 60 family and close friends. There wasn’t a colour theme as we both like lots of colours. We picked native vegetation for our decorations (acquired from people’s gardens and local parks) and had lots of fairy lights. Very good friends of ours, Gloria and Jeff Jones, helped with the decorations and did a fantastic job. Our Celebrant was a local man, Allan Morris, who had stated many years ago that when gay marriage was legalised, he would love the honour of marrying us. The cake, which was a fruit cake, was made by my niece, Leah Richardson. Our photographer was our local CEO of Port Augusta Council and good friend, John Banks. He and his lovely wife, Michelle, they did a fantastic job. Food was catered by Tony Hoffert from Signature Events & Catering, Adelaide. He had to cater for vegetarians, gluten-free and vegans and the canapé style food was awesome. Shields Hire from Whyalla provided the marquees and suggested other ideas to make our backyard comfortable for the wedding. Debra Grantham and Reggie Godbolt were our witnesses and we also had Jorja and Violet Richardson (my great-nieces) as our ring bearers. Our attire was simple yet colourful. We had a girl’s weekend with our friends, Debra Grantham and Verity Patterson, in Adelaide to choose what we would be wearing. Ann’s makeup and hair was done by local hairdresser Kismet’s and my hair was done by my niece-in-law Lora, and my makeup was done by Michelle Hinder, who used to be a makeup artist.”

“The highlight of the day was when we walked out together to be greeted by our family and friends. It was quite emotional. For our honeymoon, we spent a couple of days in Adelaide, just enjoying ourselves at restaurants and cafés. Our advice to anyone planning their wedding is to keep it simple as the day is about celebrating the marriage in front of family and friends. It was one of the happiest days of our life together.”

Congratulations GRAHAM & MARK 3 November 2018 Uki, NSW

Graham Hearn was working as a Manager for a recruitment company in Northern NSW and Mark Bridger was working as a Nurse in an Aged Care facility in a coastal town 30 minutes away. Graham had taken an applicant to the Aged Care facility to meet the Manager for an interview. After catching each other’s eye, Mark introduced himself and offered to take Graham and the applicant to meet the Manager. “We started talking and ended up having coffee together at the facility. I gave Mark my number and said if he wanted to catch up for a drink to give me a call. Two weeks later, Mark moved in and the rest, after nine and a bit years, is history.” “I had been planning things for a while and had many ideas as to how I was going to propose to Mark. However, he was diagnosed with a malignant melanoma on his back and within a week, we were in Sydney at the RPA hospital for tests and the next day, he was under the knife. I had planned many things for the proposal, but as it turned out, these did not happen. I had the ring with me in Sydney and we went to a restaurant in Newtown the night before the operation. The timing just seemed right and I passed the ring across the table and asked Mark to marry me. Luckily he said ‘yes’. It was a stressful and emotional time, but it just seemed right. Since then, Mark has made a full recovery!”

“The ceremony and reception were held at Mavis’s Kitchen and Cabins in Uki. The day was perfect and we didn’t have to lift a finger. It was the best location for the ceremony, canapes in the garden and reception in the barn. There is also accommodation on site in the way of upmarket cabins which are of a very high quality and extremely well catered for and comfortable. Our wedding style was very relaxed, no theme, just easy and simple with style, but the dress code was semi-formal. We were also blessed to have Chiquita Mitchell as our Celebrant. Chiquita made the day even more special by being her beautiful, relaxed and professional self. She was amazing and made the ceremony a fun event as well as a very relaxed one. There were no allocated places at the reception, people sat where they wanted. We didn’t have to stress about who was going to be seated together. Totally relaxed and our guests mingled well. Mavis’s Kitchen provided share plates (Bangalow organic pork with crackling and apple, plus 3 hour slow-cooked lamb), a cheese table, salads and seasonal vegetables, and canapes prior to the reception, enjoyed in the vegetable garden.”

“Our highlight was actually being able to get married with the people we love and care for around us. Everything was perfect on so many levels and surpassed all expectations. Having the ceremony under a rainforest canopy with a beautiful running stream right beside us was a true highlight.” “Our advice to anyone planning their wedding is to get organised early! Do your research and make sure that the companies you use are in line with who you are, your personalities and they work with you. We organised all ours vendors remotely and could not have been happier. Communication is the key. Ensure that everyone is on the same page. On the day itself... just let it happen and enjoy.” “We were planning to honeymoon overseas but with many things happening, we decided to hit Noosa for two weeks just to relax and unwind. Plenty of massages and pampering, with the beach and surf. We will be heading overseas next year to Europe and Ireland and Scotland which will be our second honeymoon.”

Congratulations KIRSTY & ALISHA 27 October 2018 Sunshine Coast, QLD

“You know you’re in love when you can’t fall asleep because reality is finally better than your dreams. I need you because you make me laugh more than anyone else, I am the best me when I am with you. And because when you are gone, nothing feels right until you return.”

Kirsty McSkimming and Alisha Ganski met while they were both working at Kmart. “I proposed to Kirsty at our anniversary dinner with Kirsty’s parents present at Jamie’s Italian, Brisbane restaurant. Our ceremony and reception were held at our family residence in Pelican Waters, Sunshine Coast. The theme was ‘boho with a touch of Batman’. Kirsty’s mum, Diana McCarthy organised most of the Wedding and styling including all decorations. My wedding dress was hand made by a lovely lady on the Gold Coast and Kirsty wore a tailored navy suit with a crisp white collared buttoned shirt. My bridesmaids wore dream catcher earrings with a matching necklace from Lovisa. Kirsty’s bridesmaids wore Batman earrings. The bridesmen wore Batman socks and cufflinks. The bouquets and headpieces were all handmade with flowers purchased from Ikea. For favours, we had personalised stubby holders with: ‘To have and to hold and to keep your beer cold’ and adorned with a Batman logo and rustic colours. The whole day ran smoother than expected. It was the most amazing day of their lives. Finally getting to marry our soulmate was just unbelievable. Our vows were just exactly who we are and made the day even more amazing! We spent our honeymoon in Fiji.”

Congratulations PAUL & LEE 17 January 2019 Melbourne, VIC

Paul Oman and Lee Andrew met through friends on social media. “Paul was travelling around Australia on a working holiday visa and had just arrived in Brisbane. He was staying in a 50 bed dorm at a hostel and I, having a spare room, invited him to stay with me. We first met up to discuss being potential housemates and ended up talking for hours. Right from the beginning it was clear that Paul was interested in my world and I was just as interested to know all of his stories and what influenced his journey. The connection was instant, with every passing hour the conversation just flowed. He left in the early hours of the morning and was to return a few days later to be my ‘house mate’. For the next month we spent almost every night together. I was sending signals and dropping ever so subtle (not subtle at all) hints that I wanted more than just his friendship but for someone who seemed to ‘get me’ he was totally oblivious to what my heart really wanted. I finally worked up the courage to make a move and as we lay there staring at each other, it was undeniable, we just knew! Then we kissed.”

“Paul had pre-arranged plans to return to the UK. We knew the bond we had was something rare that we could not deny or ignore and was worth exploring. So we decided that we would both commit to investing in our long-distance relationship. As Australia had just passed the law allowing same-sex couples to marry, our conversations about marriage suddenly became a reality. Being a hairdresser and working on so many weddings over the years, I got to see how special and important weddings are for the lucky few who find their soulmates. I didn’t think it was something I could ever have so I didn’t allow myself to even dream. Now that the fight for marriage equality was won and I had met someone that I knew I would spend forever with, marriage was inevitable.” “As we were so far away from one another we wanted something that would represent we were committed to each other. Paul had mentioned he thought a claddagh ring would represent our commitment to each other. It’s a traditional Irish ring that has special meaning but I kept forgetting what it stood for! Paul explained the crown represents loyalty, the hands represent friendship and the heart represents love.” “We bought each other a variation of the claddagh ring that we would exchange on Paul’s next visit to Australia. The rings were supposed to be just that, a representation of our relationship. The first thing we did when Paul arrived back was exchange rings and as I opened mine, he asked me to marry him.” “Next was the engagement party on 3 June 2018. I had been planning on a small gathering with friends that had yet to meet Paul, so after getting engaged it just seemed fitting. It was small and relatively intimate. We held it on the garden of my inner city riverside apartment. My best friends organised everything from the décor to the food and photography. It was perfect - they created an ideal atmosphere that was surrounded with love. When people arrived they thought they were attending a secret wedding, it was magic!”

“We knew the kind of wedding we (I) wanted was going to be years away. We needed time to plan. All my family live in Melbourne but all my friends are in Brisbane and of course Paul’s family and friends would need time to arrange their travel from the UK. The idea of waiting to be married until we could have that special day just wasn’t an option for us. We decided it would be better to spend every day celebrating our marriage with those around us. So after much discussion we agreed on a contemporary ceremony, to take place in a Registry service and we would continue to plan a bigger celebration for all our friends and family. We have to because, as happy as everyone is for us, they would be equally as upset if we had married without the promise of a big celebration in the future.” “One of my childhood friends in Manchester owns a ‘cakey’, specialising in birthday and wedding cakes. She has made it perfectly clear that it has to be her who makes us the perfect wedding cake. That is, of course, once she has visited the set of Home & Away and met Alf Stewart!”

“It was most important to me that my parents and sisters be a part of our ceremony, so we decided we would have the wedding in Melbourne. We happened to come across a beautiful Registry Office in South Yarra, which is located on the doorstep of the botanical gardens and made for the perfect backdrop for our photos. The Registry was nothing that you would expect it to be. Merryn, our Marriage Celebrant, was so warm and friendly that it actually felt like someone we knew was marrying us. She welcomed Lee’s Nana up to say a few words and bless the ceremony – that’s when my emotions took over, I lost it, it was just so beautiful.” “I had originally engaged a photographer I found online and we were booked, that is until I mentioned there were two grooms. It was then he informed me that he ‘did not do same-sex weddings’. After getting over the shock of this blatant discrimination, my cousin stepped in and put me in touch with her old school friend, Shravan. After seeing his work, we were so excited to have him capture our most important moments and locked him down for the wedding day. He made the emotions we were feeling come straight through the lens and totally hid the fact we were melting in the humidity. We couldn’t have been happier with the outcome of our photos. After the photoshoot we headed for some family time at the beach with my parents and my little sisters. We enjoyed our first meal together as a married couple before heading to The Little Guest House in Elwood for the start of our honeymoon. We spent a few days in the city showing Paul around Melbourne. Then it was back to my family home for a traditional islander feed!”

“We’re so excited for the future, especially our (my) big wedding and the plans we have in store. We want to continue travelling together, starting with a honeymoon in Bali and build on these strong foundations we have made for our relationship. I have aspirations to open my own salon and we would love to one day start a family of our own. The highlight of the day for me was seeing Paul in his suit for the first time, I realised in that moment, of all the choices I have made in my life, this was by far my best!”

Paul’s Highlight: “When we were at the beach with the family. Sitting on the promenade with my new husband, watching our three little sisters play in the surf, I just felt the happiest I have ever been. I have never known what it means to love and be loved with your whole heart and now I know it means I always feel at home, wherever we may be, as long as we are together.”

Congratulations JESS & EMMA 3 October 2018 Gold Coast, QLD

Jessica Day and Emma Davidson met when they started working at the same place. “We never thought we would even be friends as we are completely different, however it turned out we have the same goals and dreams and being different has worked well for us as we balance each other out. We went for a holiday to Hawaii in 2017 and Jess loves fireworks so we went to the Friday night fireworks at the Hilton Hotel. We found a little space on the beach to watch the fireworks and Emma proposed. It was really lovely.

“Our wedding theme was BEACH & BLING! The ceremony was held at John Laws Park, Burleigh Heads and the reception was at Burleigh Heads Mowbray Park Surf Life Saving Club. Living in Victoria and getting married in Queensland, we knew there would be loved ones unable to make it so our ceremony began with a little toast to those too unwell to make the trip to Queensland and those who were no longer with us, but we knew would be looking down on us from above. It meant so much to us to have so many people travel from Victoria for our wedding and we felt the love around us all day. It was something so truly special. The weather was amazing as was the back drop of the beach. Our first dance was so special, starting off with only us on the dance floor and then everybody joining in.

“Our advice to anyone planning a wedding is don’t sweat the small stuff! Your wedding will all come together, no point worrying about things that might happen. Jess wishes she had listened to her own advice a little more!” “For our honeymoon, we have booked a trip to New Zealand and are in the process of planning a trip to New York City... it’s always been our dream to visit NYC.”
