Impulse Buyers Now An Endangered Species with Value for Money Top of Mind A leading jeweler believes there’s been a major shift in the shopping habits of women that can be seen across online, in store and party plan purchases: “People are pressed for time and they’re more deal-savvy than ever because it’s easy to research what’s out there before spending their money,” said Maria Nicola, who invented the 10 Way Necklace.

“Online shopping sites are often exited when the shopping cart is full because the buyer has changed their mind by the time they go to fill out their details,” said Ms Nicola. She went on to explain: “When it comes to retail stores people are spending a lot less time in their browsing because more often than not they have decided what they want and at what price they’re willing to pay before they’ve walked in the door. They’re looking online first before going in store on a mission which is why shoppers who once spent two hours browsing are now down to 45 minutes. You can also see it at Tupperware, lingerie and jewellery parties, where people are comfortable to come and have some food and leave without buying anything... which was unheard of just 5 years ago. The increase in the cost of living and the wide variety of choice are certainly driving this change in shopping behaviour.” “Value for money is want women want ensuring they can get a number of wears out of an outfit and their accessories. It’s now common for people to pitch in and buy a group gift that offers value for money, rather than something that has a short shelf-life. This change in shopping habits is what led to my idea of a necklace that can be worn ten different ways and it’s proving popular.” Maria has 22 years experience in the jewellery industry and created the 10 Way Necklace, which can be worn ten different ways as the name suggests. It also has optional extras like the Swarovski pendant, matching earrings and crystal tassels to add even more different looks. Visit www.MariaNicola.com

A ROYAL AFFAIR

When Brisbane designer Brad Webb, of DARB BRIDAL COUTURE, shows his collections... it’s evident that much of his inspiration comes from the glamour and old-world opulence of French grand couturiers like DIOR and CHANEL. His collection injects a sense of the latest fashion trends yet still maintains that classic bridal style that has seen him win countless prestigious fashion awards. “This collection is contemporary without compromising on elegance and tradition,” Brad says. “Some of the collection is about fine detailing, beadwork, embellishment and embroidery, while the other part of the collection is about the unique and exclusive fabrics.” Much like the stylish designer himself, Brad’s mix of statement designs, luxurious European fabrics and perfectly-corseted gowns photographed in this collection aren’t for wallflowers! “She’s not the shy bride in the corner... she’s the bride that wants to turn heads,” Webb says describing the typical Darb bride. The collaboration for this photoshoot with milliner Heidi Holmes of Shut The Front Door seemed like a no-brainer. “Heidi is equally as creative and fashion-forward as Brad; her distinctive approach to millinery is apparent, it’s spectacular decorative art,” says stylist Nicky McLauchlan. “Nothing screams self-assurance like a statement headpiece which shocks and delights.” Shut The Front Door’s collection of show-stopping couture headpieces has been inspired by fashions of the past. The bespoke designs combine traditional techniques, exquisite materials and refined craftsmanship. “The inspiration behind this shoot was Versailles in France,” explains Nicky. “Think glamorous brides traipsing through luscious gardens, running down the hall of mirrors, indulging in decadent cake and draping themselves on splendid interiors.” With designers like Darb Bridal Couture and Shut The Front Door in your city, who needs to travel all the way to Versailles in France!

A new A.G.E. of beauty from Germaine de Capuccini

Put your hand up if you want to age gracefully? No hands, not a surprise. Well, thanks to Germaine de Capuccini’s Timexpert C+ A.G.E, you don’t have to. TIMEXPERT C+ (A.G.E.)* was developed to combat skin glycation, which is one of the main catalysts of ageing. “Glycation occurs when an excess of glucose is combined with the collagen and elastin fibres and it sets off the formation of the end products of advanced glycation,” says Tess Walls, Director of Germaine de Capuccini Australia. “Glucose wraps around the collagen and elastin fibres and with time they become rigid and can even break and lose their integrity. With age, the glycosylated proteins accumulate in the dermis and end up destroying the support cushion of the skin formed by elastin and collagen.” TIMEXPERT C+ A.G.E. is the only product of its kind on the market and one of the most potent anti-ageing products you will find. It’s not just Vitamin C that makes TIMEXPERT C+ A.G.E. so effective. It’s the inclusion of UME, a Japanese plum that has been used as food and medicine in China, Korea and Japan. It contains twice as many proteins, minerals and fats than other fruits. It has a powerful anti-glycation effect capable of inhibiting the formation of the A.G.E.s, hence the Vitamin C+. This incredible product reduces the signs of ageing, firms and clarifies the skin leaving

it brighter and more luminious. So to stop premature ageing and retain youthful, glowing, luminous skin, add the A.G.E range to your skincare regime. TIMEXPERT C+ A.G.E Products: Intensive Multi-correction Cream (normal to dry skin) or Emulsion (normal to combination skin) – RRP: $120 Based on Vitamin C + UME Extract, this wonderful treatment will enhance hydration, clarity, comfort and firmness. With superior protection from free radicals, the skin is left glowing, luminous, flawless and youthful. Pure C Essence Facial Serum with Vitamin C – RRP: $110 A true revitalising essence with a high concentration of Pure Vitamin C that intensely repairs the skin’s luminosity, vitality and balance, meanwhile visible lines and wrinkles are erased. The serum consists of two phases: the Pure Vitamin C together with a conditioning emulsion with an ultra-silky texture. With results visible within the first week of consistent use, it’s the perfect solution to ageing skin. *A.G.E’s are molecules generation by the process of glycation. They harm the collagen and elastin and with time they accumulate on the skin, setting off premature ageing that is promoted by oxidative stress and UV radiation. Congratulations Rhiannon Hutt and Karl Black met through mutual friends in the Royal Australian Airforce. “Whilst Karl was on deployment in Afghanistan, we started talking several weeks before he came home. He landed on a Thursday afternoon back in Brisbane and came to meet me at my work on Friday for our first coffee date. Conversation flowed and since that day, we’ve been inseperable. We moved in together after only 5 months.” Rhiannon describes when Karl popped the question: “18 months after we met, we went on a holiday to Thailand. We first went to Chaing Mai to fulfil my life-long dream of visiting an Elephant Rehabilitation Centre and we trekked bareback through the jungle. When we returned to the hotel, we were so hungry and about to leave for dinner, but Karl was too busy rummaging around in his luggage. I actually got mad and said: ‘hurry up, I’m so hungry!’ then he walked over to me, got on one knee and asked me to marry him. His mother had wrapped the ring box in birthday paper and hidden it in his luggage for him. The remainder of our holiday was a celebration of our engagement.”

Rhiannon & Karl

16 April 2016

Rhiannon wore the ‘Fleur’ Gown, by Mori-Lee and Madeline Gardner NY, purchased from White Lily Couture, Brisbane. “The ladies at White Lily were amazing. I had tried on a couple of gowns before I found ‘the one’. My mother, sister and I all cried when I tried it on and that was how I knew it was the Princess gown for my fairytale wedding. My beautiful (only) sister was 34 weeks pregnant with her first child on our wedding day. After purchasing 3 bridesmaid gowns for her... the third was the charm. We found it online from PS Frocks and with a little alteration around the waist, it was a perfect fit.”

“My good friend Chloe McCarthy from Rustic Locks in Ipswich travelled to my mother’s home to do our hair the morning of the wedding, and then met me at the venue before the ceremony to do a touch-up. I’m not a very ‘girly girl’, so makeup for me was uncharted territory! I visited my local Napoleon Perdis bar at Terry White Booval and the lovely Emily fulfilled my desire for light and natural looking makeup.”

The boys hired their suits from Strictly Formal at Milton. “They had a huge variety of suits at a great price. We had been struggling to find a nice style suit in the Navy tone we wanted, but they had several.”

Rhiannon’s mother knew someone who participated in a Medieval Fare at Abbey of the Roses at Warwick, and knowing the couple’s love for Walt Disney love stories like Sleeping Beauty and Beauty and the Beast, she suggested it would be the “perfect sandstone castle” for their wedding. “We attended the venue and booked a date immediately. It was everything we could have dreamed of.” The ceremony was held in the gazebo at Abbey of the Roses: “A fabulous venue to host everything from our ceremony, reception and being able to book the entire BnB of 14 guest rooms for our nearest and dearest.” The reception was held in The Long Room and guests enjoyed canape’s and drinks on the lawn after the ceremony until the reception started.

The couple chose Deb Boots Photography to photograph their wedding. “I had seen Deb’s work from a friend’s wedding and knew I had to have her! She met us to do a site visit and get some inspiration for the photographs before the big day. We found the most beautiful field only 5 minutes from the venue and knew the photographs would have the country feel we had dreamed of.”

“Agnes from Angie’s Floral Design in Thornlands created our beautiful Australian Native arrangements, including 2 large bouquets, 7 table posies, a throwaway bouquet, a cake topper, 3 corsages and 4 buttonholes! The night before she sent me a photo of them all... and I cried. They were just breathtaking.”

“Our cake was created by Deb’s Cupcake Toppers and Cakes. Her cakes are always a delicious crowd pleaser! I created the table centrepieces... we saved up Moccona coffee jars and tied twine around them and bought some mirror glass from ebay and a few candles. It was the table posies by Angie’s Floral Design that really made them beautiful. A cheap and simple DIY alternative to hiring expensive centrepieces.”

Music was provided by DDE (Darling Downs Entertainment). “They were great! We hired a string quartet to play softly on the lawn for guests between the ceremony and reception. We also hired a variety of lawn games from Little Vintage Days at Everton Park. For our first dance, we chose ‘Kiss Me’ by Ed Sheeran... who doesn’t love an Ed Sheeran love song?”

“We flew to Hawaii for our honeymoon the next night, and while we admittingly walked onto the plane like ‘zombies’ and slept for 18 hours at the other end, we were so glad we got to fly out straight away. Hawaii is an amazing destination. I had never heard anyone say anything bad about it, and now I know why. We will definitely return again one day.” “Everyone will tell you to ‘take a moment for yourselves and take it all in’... the crazy thing is that as much as you try to do that and to remember every detail, it still ends up being a happy blur! My only advice is to enjoy the party you planned for so long. Kick up your heels and have a dance. Don’t worry about what everyone else is doing. If you can look around and see everyone smiling, your day has been a success, and nothing else matters. Enjoy yourself! We both married our best friend, and everyone who shared that with us was smiling. I don’t think there is a better highlight of the day than that!” vi s i t

Beyond the 4 C’s: TIPS on shopping for an engagement ring . . .

Founder and Creative Director of BUNDA Fine Jewels, Ben is a certified gemmologist with a Fine Arts degree, a background in fine antiques, and more than 20 years of international experience in gemstone sourcing, distribution, design, craftsmanship and the jewellery market. BUNDA has supplied fine jewellery to numerous high profile Australian and international clients, including many Australian Prime Ministers, other politicians, actors, personalities, and discerning collectors the world over. Ben sees himself as much as a curator of collections as a purveyor of fine jewels. The BUNDA name recently became more widely prominent through its involvement with The Bachelor Australia, becoming its first official jewellery sponsor in 2013 and 2014, after having been approached by Shine Productions. www.bunda.com.au

With the early months of the new year being a popular time for marriage proposals - celebrities included, such as the recent engagement announcements of James Packer to Mariah Carey and Ruper t Murdoch to Jerry Hall - many couples will be researching how to buy a diamond for the very first time in their lives. However, the rule book of how to buy a diamond, known as the Four C’s, should not be regarded as a complete guide, cautions one of Australia’s leading fine jewellers, Ben Bunda. According to Ben Bunda, Founder and Creative Director of one of Australia’s leading jewellery houses, BUNDA Fine Jewels, too many couples are making the mistake of relying on overly simplified, incomplete guides available online regarding diamond buying, and missing out on the comprehensive guidance that only an exper t can provide. “I often consult with clients who have researched online and have some idea of what they want, which usually prioritises size and shape. But when I sit down with them to get to the hear t of their style, and explain additional aspects they haven’t considered, such as the character of a diamond – then their diamond journey can go down a very special path,” says Ben. “When choosing a diamond to buy for an engagement ring or other personal jewellery, I always say to ‘buy beauty’. The beauty in a diamond is not evident in the four C’s alone (carat, cut, colour and clarity). In fact, the colour and clarity have almost no impact on the beauty or the ‘sparkle factor’, also known as light performance. This emerges almost solely as a result of propor tion and perfection in cutting.” Ben believes that it’s a bit of a shame to see someone spor ting a poorly cut gem which doesn’t look good next to other rings, because they were sold the biggest stone their budget allowed. “Buying a diamond engagement ring for size is something that has become quite common, as consumers seek to emulate the larger look that has emerged as a trend set by celebrities. However, a larger stone is only right if it possesses beauty, and suits you and your style,” adds Ben. A fine jewels exper t can help clients go beyond the basics of the Four C’s in order to make the right choice in stone. But first, they need to know how to shop for that stone.

Ben Bunda has identified the following 5 tips on shopping for an engagement ring: 1. Choose a jeweller who deals in beauty - and in more than just diamonds. The company and sales consultant that you are dealing with should be able to demonstrate good knowledge and exper tise not only in diamonds, but in other gemstones too – look for a display of coloured gemstones within their collections. This is an indication of true fine gem exper ts who can give you a comprehensive experience and assist you to choose a truly beautiful stone to express your love - something you won’t get from basic diamond merchants. 2. Buy from one place for sourcing, design and manufacture. You should buy your engagement ring from the one company, who can demonstrate a sense of heritage and specialisation in end-to-end design and manufacture. Purchasing the stone from one company and having it made by another company does not get you the best result; you will be compromising either the quality of the stone or the quality of the manufacture. You need to feel confident in both, and if they specialise in both areas then the exper tise will be evident. 3. Avoid buying from a very small operator. Do not buy your diamond from a very small manufacturing jeweller that doesn’t have a store front but says they can get you a good deal on a stone they do not have access to the best diamonds. Larger manufacturers showcasing an array of natural gemstones instore have the strongest connections to the best quality diamond sources. 4. Ensure your jeweller’s rep is as shiny as their rocks. Check that the company has a decent sized collection in-store, with knowledgeable and helpful staff. Look into their reputation – not only endorsements from media and expensive adver tising, but also word of mouth online and amongst your own networks of family and friends. 5. Be picky and the choose the right relationship. Choosing the right jeweller can be like any relationship in life: some are compatible and may see you throughout many milestones in your life, while others won’t click enough to last beyond one encounter. Be sure that the company has genuinely knowledgeable and helpful staff. And above all, buy your diamond from a company who has a true passion for fine gems and jewellery, and is prepared to give you all the time and information you need to make an informed decision about both the diamond and the completed engagement ring.

ONTREND BRIDAL ONLINE SPOTLIGHT

Lisa & Elly from PURPLE DAZE HAIR STUDIO chat with Thea Rowan, OnTrend Bridal Style Editor about BRIDAL HAIR TRENDS If you’re anything like me even blow-drying your hair is a chore. And when it comes to weddings, the ‘just got out of bed’ look is not going to impress anyone. This is why the right hairstylist is a crucial element in the ‘big day’ beautifying mix. I chat with Lisa MacDonald, the Owner and Head Stylist of Purple Daze Hair Studio in Paddington, Brisbane about style, prep and communication. Lisa has had the knack for hair since she was a young girl. Her friends would line up to have their hair done for every formal occasion or evening out. It seemed only natural for Lisa to complete her traineeship in Hairdressing once she finished her schooling She has now been working in the industry for 17 years. For Lisa, hairdressing isn’t just about creating amazing looks but also building strong relationships with her clients. Often these relationships are built over a number of years; Lisa is there for all the special moments in her clients’ lives, from débutante balls to graduations and of course weddings. “I love being asked to be a par t of a bride’s special day, seeing the photos of their bridal hair after the event is just lovely”. Our conversation heads towards inspiration… hair trends often impact a bride’s inspiration when it comes to finding theperfect wedding day look. Lisa explains that the red carpet is the ‘go to’ as it is a combination of fashion, style and elegance. Pinterest and Instagram are also great sources of inspiration. These social media platforms make it easy to find and collect images Lisa tell her brides to, “bring

as many photos as you need to your appointment”. Understanding the bride’s likes and dislikes can help when choosing the perfect look. Lisa goes on to say: “Always keep in mind the dress, your skin tone and hair colour when choosing a hair style”. This ensures your overall look is flwless. I ask Lisa for her professional tips for her brides’ in the lead up to the wedding day. Lisa explains that hair care is no different to any health and beauty regime: “Once a client becomes engaged and knows what dress she is wearing, we star t a 6-month hair plan”. This gives the bride and stylist time to get the hair healthy and colour perfect. Lisa’s top tip is to let your hairdresser know when you love your colour the most. If your hair is going to be worn down, she suggests getting a trim a week or so before the big day. Lisa’s goal is to make all her clients feel beautiful and confident “How a bride feels directly impacts how they look on the day”. Elly joins us to talk bridal trends. Elly is the Creative Director at Purple Daze and has worked closely with Lisa for many years. The girls excitedly bounce off each other as they list their favourite trends for Spring/Summer... texture, boho curls and fishbraids are at the top of their list. When it comes to the wedding day, Elly suggests taking a small fixation spay with you to ensure your ‘do’ stays picture-perfect in all weather conditions. The girls are focused on not only making you look a million dollars, but making you feel that way too. They take pride in getting to know their clients and by doing so their service and styling goes above and beyond. Lisa and Elly are the perfect team; their passion for the industry is infectious. I left feeling inspired to take out the ‘top knot’ and try something new!

Amy Stapleton and Kahu Pakinga were married on 18 March 2016 in a heartfelt ceremony at Hasting Point Headland. They celebrated with family and friends at a cocktail style reception at Salt Bar & Bistro at Salt Village, Kingscliff. Photos courtesy Andrew Foy, Foy & Co Photography... thank you for the wonderful images Andrew.

“

To us, our wedding was all about having our family and friends together in a relaxed, beautiful location to celebrate our love and to celebrate our little family coming together.

“

I absolutely loved my wedding dress, Pina is an amazing designer. I crossed paths with her a few years in a row in the lead up to our wedding. Having instantly connected with Pina, I knew who I was calling to make my dress when Kahu asked me to marry him. It was through the relationship that we built that Pina understood my personality and created the work of art that was my wedding dress. The dress was designed with layers of lace carefully pieced together, with different elements of texture and French lace combined with a unique honeycomb design. I was proud to wear such an original design made with love.

“

Amy is a beautiful and very talented professional interior decorator with grace and a great know-how when it comes to her creative work. I have fun with all my brides and Amy and I had trust in each other’s opinion, which made creating her dream dress such a joy. Pina Fiorenza, Designer

Congratulations Rebecka & Cliff

1

14 May 2016

Rebecka Garrick and Cliff Schmidt were married on 14 May 2016 in a beautiful ceremony and reception held at Spicers Clovelly Estate, Montville. The couple met at a friend’s BBQ and pool party through Bec’s sister. It was Bec’s first day living in Brisbane. “Our fate was sealed after our first meeting!” Bec describes the proposal: “Cliff organised a surprise weekend away at Noosa. When we arrived, we went for a picnic in the Noosa National Park at Granite Bay and he proposed complete with dolphins in the background - it was magic!”

The bride wore Maggie Sottero and her bridesmaids wore dresses by Forever New. Their hair was by Anthea Verdoorn (a friend) and makeup by Devika Alè (a friend). The men wore Blaq suits. Flowers were by Flowerlovers at Rocklea Markets and their cake was by Cake Designs Schmidt. Music was provided by the couple’s friend, Warwick: “... or more affectionately know to us as DJ Dingo. We chose Jason Mraz, I Won’t Give Up for our first dance. We liked the pace and the story within the lyrics.” Bec and Cliff chose John Reyment, Reyment Photographics to capture all of the precious moments of their day.

We had both of our grandmothers do a bible reading at our ceremony. Family means everything to us and it was so special to have our families all in one place. Cliff ’s grandmother travelled from South Africa, at the age of 92, to be with us.

The couple honeymooned in Samoa: “We wanted to escape to tropical paradise and we definitely found it! We loved the slow pace of the islands and would recommend the islands of Upolu and Savai’i to anyone interested.” “Planning our wedding was very exciting. For us it was all a pleasant and calm experience! Our advice... have fun and enjoy it!” Bec’s highlight: “Choosing a moment is too hard! I look back on the day as perfection! A very special moment was looking around and knowing that everyone there loves and supports us.” Cliff ’s highlight: “Seeing my beautiful wife-to-be walking down the aisle in her stunning dress.”

“

A love story was unfolding in front of me. Seeing how Cliff looks at Bec and she at him, wow! Surrounded by family and friends, many travelling internationally to be with them, their wedding day was a magnificent celebration. Capturing the magical moments with my camera was an absolute thrill, congratulations to you both! John Reyment, Reyment Photographics

Congratulations Katie & Justin 3 October 2015

Katie Wilson and Justin Harris were married on 3 October 2015 in a ceremony and reception at Riverlife in Brisbane. Katie describes how they first met and Justin’s proposal [which has to be one of the best wedding proposals we have heard at OnTrend Bridal]... “We met on a big night out in the Valley at Birdee Num Nums. We spent the night running around, having deep and meaningful chats, climbing trees and watching the sunrise. We were pretty much inseparable a few weeks later! I am a nature lover and had been complaining that I needed to get out of the city and get some fresh air; so Justin planned for us to go to Maleny. His original intention was to propose at the beautiful Kondalilla Falls after an easy bush walk of about 30 minutes – he had secretly pre-packed champagne and the ring in our backpack before we left. However he didn’t do his research and unbeknownst to us at the time, he parked on the opposite side of the mountain to the falls. After about 2 hours of serious bushwalking up and down steep terrain, I started to complain A LOT and said we should turn around, as there were now signs saying ‘advanced hikers only’ and there was no waterfall in sight! He convinced me to keep going and kept saying it had to be coming up soon. After 3 hours we stumbled upon possibly the worst waterfall I had ever seen... it was a flat wall with a trickling dribble of water running down it. Justin said that maybe the pictures he had seen online were old and assured me this was the waterfall. I was pretty unimpressed with it after the 3 hour walk from hell, but I did some exploring while Justin had a panic attack. I asked him if he was okay because he looked very pale and unwell, I suggested maybe he should lie down. Finally I sat down on a rock and the next minute I hear: “I bet you weren’t expecting this!” and he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. After having some champagne, we got up and kept walking, only to find the amazing Kondalilla Falls right around the corner from our crappy waterfall - so he got down again and re-proposed! We ended up walking for another 2 hours… got completely lost and stranded on the mountain. We found a café just before dark and told them we had just got engaged in the forest and now we were stuck on the mountain with no way home! The lovely people drove us the half an hour back to where our car was parked! It was an awesome day and even though not everything went to plan, I love that day and how funny and crazy it ended up being!”

The ceremony was conducted in one of the wedding parklands beside the Brisbane River at Riverlife by Jamie Eastgate from Brisbane City Celebrants: “Jamie was very polite, warm and always so easy to deal with; he was excellent at ensuring everything ran smoothly on the day which was a great help. We loved that we were given complete flexibility with our ceremony so we included our own words and shared our story together. We also opted to write our own vows which was really special. We asked Jamie to write a spiel acknowledging our belief in marriage equality which was a huge hit and was perfect. Our florist provided beautiful ferns and greenery for our wedding arbour which created a stunning backdrop. The reception was in the marquee. I liked working with Neil - he was really accommodating and always happy to answer my emails and never left me hanging! We were able to style the marquee how we liked and also use their beautiful chandelier lighting. We had the buffet menu and received lots of compliments on variety and taste of the food, and people were delighted that they could go up for seconds if they wished. The back drop of the city at night was absolutely beautiful!” “We adored our photographer, Shuwei and our videographer, Dan from Dreamlife Photos & Video (Brisbane). They made us feel completely at ease all day and really captured some spectacular photos and footage. Shuwei was like hanging out with an old friend and he gave us great ideas for some shots that we love.”

Katie found her dress at Gowns of Elegance – Chermside: “Linda really knows her dresses and made me feel very taken care of. The dress I ended up with was the very first dress I tried on! The bridesmaids wore Alannah Hill dresses. I wanted something whimsical and floral for my bridesmaids and the dresses were on sale at the time too! I loved how beautiful and different the girls looked - they were such beauties on the day! The boys were dressed by George and King. He comes to your home to get measurements and tailors each suit. Justin and his groomsmen all came over for drinks and were fitted for their suits, which looked great.” Katie is a florist at Divine Flowers in Brisbane: “I was so lucky to have their expertise for my flowers! We went with tones of rich pink, burgundy and cream for the bouquets. Everything was beautiful of course! Justin’s aunty made our cake which was a naked cake and very delicious. We opted for a whimsical wedding theme and created it with beautiful wooden lanterns with candles, gold hurricane vases and ferns in baskets. I made all the centrepieces, which were large gold containers filled with lush living ferns. At the end of the night, I gave them away to family and some of them are still thriving! We also had beautiful fishtail ferns hanging from the ceiling. We made all the favours – small fishbowls with a flowering plant and finished with moss - for everyone to take home. They were also placed on the tables as decorations.” “Our first dance song was to ‘Shut up and Dance’ by Walk the Moon. We like to pretend we can swing dance and this song had the most perfect lyrics for us. We just made it up as we went along and it was really fun! There was a special touch that Justin’s mum added during her speech, which was really adorable. Justin had a Humphrey B Bear toy that was his favourite bear throughout his childhood. She secretly took him to Build-a-Bear to get a little suit made and during her speech, she pulled him out from under a table and handed him to Justin.” “We chose Golden Gate limos for our transport and they were amazing! Our drivers were so professional and patient... and brought along some lollies for us when we were having our photo shoot. And at the end of the night we had a different driver pick us up and he stopped at the servo for us to get a pie! Haha! Still dressed in our finery.”

“We spent a week in Vanuatu at a small resort called Coco Beach for our honeymoon. We were happy to visit Vanuatu and contribute to their economy as they were truly devastated by Cyclone Pam and there is still so much work to be done to restore villages! We also wanted somewhere we could relax but do fun activities so it was perfect!” “Our advice to other couples planning their wedding would be to let go and not take everything so seriously. I found as it got closer to the wedding that I had overthought a lot and made some issues bigger than they needed to be. Keep a level head! And get an amazing photographer! You will absolutely cherish the photos from your day and they are seriously priceless.” Katie’s highlight: “It was at the end of the night after Justin and I had run through the arch and all of our bridal party were waiting for us at the end. We had the most soppiest and emotional goodbyes! Everyone was hugging and kissing and declaring love and it was just the most perfect send off.” Justin’s highlight: “Finally seeing Katie walk around the corner and down the aisle... the rush of feelings brought tears to my eyes and it was an amazing moment.” CELEBRANT TIP >> Many couples are choosing to acknowledge their belief and support for marriage equality within their ceremony, as the legal wording in marriage ceremonies in Australia refers to marriage being between a man and a woman. Words of support are often met with cheers and applause from like-minded guests.

Congratulations Hadassah & Jonathon 5 September 2015

Hadassah Venn and Jonathon Ramsey were married on 5 September 2015 in a ceremony on the Redland Bay waterfront, followed by a reception at Redland Bay Golf Club. Hadassah describes the proposal as... perfect: “Jonathon bought the ring from Tiffany & Co and proposed on Christmas Day. We decided to host Christmas at our place and had both families over. After breakfast, we all went to the lounge room to open presents. Then Jonathon stood up and started making a speech... it was our first Christmas together and I was thinking: ‘there’s probably no need to get up and say a speech Darl... it’s Christmas!’ The speech went on and then he got down on one knee and proposed... in front of everyone! I was so surprised, all I could say was ‘thank you’. My Grandpa had to say ‘Dassy... is that a yes?’ And then I said ‘thank you... Yes’. I couldn’t get any words out! It was really special because our families were there to share it with us. My engagement ring and our wedding bands were from Tiffany’s. Trudy looked after us and made the whole experience of choosing rings so special. We still get Christmas Cards from them... I’m obsessed with Tiffany’s jewellery!”

“Fresh flower wedding arbours are simply breathtaking, utterly romantic and will frame the both of you and your stunning backdrop to perfection!” Cara, Brisbane Wedding Decorators.

“Dogs play a huge part in our lives and we wanted them to be a part of our special day. I had Bella, my Chihuahua, dressed in her own bridal gown on the day. My mother’s Chihuahua was dressed in a tux and my sister’s Pomeranian dressed up too. When we were signing the papers, Bella broke free from her lead, ran up to Jonathon and jumped on his lap. Her timing was perfect!”

“My mother lives on the waterfront in Redland Bay and we held the ceremony in the Jack Gordon Pathway across the road from her house. When I contacted Cara from Brisbane Wedding Decorators to discuss ideas for my ceremony set up, I mentioned that I loved the flower wall that Kim and Kanye had at their wedding and wondered if there was a way we could incorporate beautiful fresh flowers while complementing the stunning view of the water. Cara came up with the idea of a 4-poster arbour covered in my favourite flowers – Vendela roses... it was even better than I ever envisioned. We had clear ghost chairs for the guests, which really enhanced the stunning backdrop and tied in perfectly with the clear Tiffany chairs at our reception. They made our ceremony so magical and I can’t thank the team at Brisbane Wedding Decorators enough. Sue Skinner was our Celebrant. She was so kind and helpful to us before and after the wedding. I walked down the aisle to ‘A Thousand Years’ by The Piano Guys. I wanted something classic with no words, just music. We incorporated a stone ceremony... at the beginning of the ceremony, our Celebrant explained to the guests that they were all to be given a stone to hold. The premise is that the guests each hold the white stone and make a wish or prayer for the bride and groom during that time. During the register signing, the stones were collected and placed in vases provided. We now display them in a bowl in our home as a symbol of their love and prayers.”

“I wanted to book a photographer who I felt comfortable with. I knew Laura (Laura Slade Photography) from High School and have always admired her skill for art and eye for detail. I’m so grateful for the photography she did on the day, we really love our photos.” “I went to White Lily Couture and chose a gown called Chanel by Mori Lee. The ladies were so lovely and helpful. I knew I wanted to wear an ostrich feather bolero and the only place in Brisbane I could find that stocked them was The Babushka Ballerina. They had an amazing selection. I chose my dress to suit a feather bolero because I really wanted to wear one. I love how they move. The bridesmaids wore Sheike dresses. One of my best friends, Kristy Knowles, did an absolutely perfect job of my hair as well as my mother’s, my grandmother’s and my bridesmaids. I had been to a girlfriend’s wedding and she looked absolutely stunning! She recommended Make-up by Belinda Nicoll to me and I was so happy with the results.” “The boys wore Italia Collezioni suits from Myer. Nadine from Redlands Florist created our bouquets of Columbian Vendela roses, which perfectly matched the wedding arbour. The cake was pivotal to the style of our entire wedding as it was actually the first thing I had chosen. I found a picture I liked on Pinterest about 18 months before the wedding and started a vision board... well actually a wall in my bedroom became my vision board! Whenever I saw something I liked, I printed it out and stuck it on my bedroom wall. When I came across this photo of the cake that I loved, I designed everything else around the cake.”

“I’ve always been really close to my grandparents, who are in their 80’s now... and still baking the most amazing fruit cakes you’ve ever tasted! My grandparents and I soaked the dried fruit in rum about 6 months before the wedding. Because we wanted it round, we had to bake an extra large square cake, big enough to cut out a circle. And because of the size of the cake, my grandpa handmade the cake tin out of wood! They believe that it keeps more moisture in the cake while baking - which I agree with. My Pa even made a perfect lid out of wood that sat in the cake box to keep it safe until the wedding. After we made the big square bottom tier, I took it to Kathryn Every from Every’s Cakes and she made the rest of it. She made the middle tier Chocolate Mud and the top tier White Chocolate Mud. It was an absolute work of art! The thank you gifts I had made were golf balls, with a little picture of a bride and groom and our names and wedding date printed on them, inside little white gift bags. Our guests’ names were on the gift bags and they doubled up as place cards.”

The reception was held at the Redland Bay Golf Club. “They did such an amazing job of our reception. The food, wine and service were absolutely outstanding. The styling for the reception was by Miss Weddings, who were so helpful. I really wanted clear Tiffany chairs and gold charger plates. I booked the candelabra through Redlands Florist, as I was really after something quite spectacular. Ron from All Music Solutions looked after all the music, the mega bubble machine (for the ceremony), the low lying fog machine, all the LED lights, and a custom made glass gobo for the wall in the reception. He did an amazing job. We chose ‘Thinking out Loud’ - Ed Sheeran for our first dance - we both loved the song and when it was first released, I remember visualising our first dance to that song (I’m a pretty big romantic). We also had dancing lessons with Kylie Wall at Planet Ballroom prior to the wedding.” Hadassah’s highlight: “My favourite moment was when Jonathon and I were beneath the floral arbour, saying our vows to each other. I just treasured every moment of it.” Jonathon’s highlight: Watching my bride and her mother walk down the aisle was the best and most emotional part of the day for me.”

“With the ceremony and reception being so close to each other, we had my mother’s pink golf buggy transport the bridal party and white golf buggies (with drivers) do trips from the waterfront ceremony area to the Golf Club. For those that decided to take the short stroll to the reception, I had family decorate the pathway with balloons and decorations so they knew where to go.” vi s i t

“On a beautiful Brisbane day, these two

love birds made it official... declaring to the world how much they loved each other during a service in the Greek Orthodox Church of St. George. Their reception was held at The Greek Club. George and Khaela’s day was picture-perfect. Even though it was unexpectedly windy, nature added to the images, blowing hair and veils and dresses for dramatic effect. Surrounded by their family and friends, George and Khaela laughed, cried, kissed, danced, drank champagne and created some of the best memories of their lives. ONTREND BRIDAL ONLINE asked Suzanne Rigby, Personal Trainer with RIG.PT Personal Training at Max 24hour Fitness, Scarborough for her TOP10 TIPS to Tone Up Before Your Wedding TIP 1 PLAN & PREPARE - Plan your day, prepare your meals and prepare to Rock that Frock! Best way to start your day is to be prepared. If you fail to plan, you plan to fail. Prepare your 3 main meals and 2 satisfying snacks. This will help you stay on track, but also motivate you to stay focused on your endgoal.

used to be, and it has come back. Cut out all processed sugars and say NO to chemicals that cause you to hold onto stubborn fat, make you tired, and make you look and feel flat. Instead, say YES to a healthy brain, healthy joints, beautiful skin and a faster metabolism. Even after your wedding, you will never go back! Stick to what I like to call, clean, lean and green.

TIP 5 KEEP IT FUN - Nothing will derail you faster than being bored or finding you have bitten off more than you can chew. Don’t decide a couple of weeks out from your big day that you are going to lose 20kg - not only TIP 2 HYDRATE - When you’re hydrated, is that highly unlikely (as well as dangerous) your brain works faster, you feel clear-headed you will be let down. Keep your expectations and you will help to keep your metabolism realistic, aim to look your best, but aim to boosted (great for all of that pre-wedding have fun getting there. Keep your workouts planning). The first thing to do when you wake fun, include obstacles, or funny exercises, like up is drink a big glass of room-temperature a bear crawl, or crab walk, even leap frogs filtered water with a slice of lemon. TIP 7 DON’T STRESS THE SMALL STUFF Stress can create issues in life as well as within your health. The effects of stress in your life can cause more than just a headache. Stress can stall your health and fitness success in many ways. Try to stay focused on the bigger picture, enjoy the process and don’t stress the small stuff! Sure, think ahead and plan your meals, but if you get stuck or can’t stay on track that day, there is always tomorrow. Make simple, small changes that you can easily follow. Choose a smaller meal or entree size when eating out. Soup is a great alternative, can often have a lot less calories than a main meal, but still be satisfying. Stay positive and stress less.

Congratulations Julia & Louis

12 June 2016

Julia Ruff and Louis Meyer were married on 12 June 2016 at St Ignatius Church in Richmond, Melbourne. They celebrated with family and friends in a reception at the Cargo Hall, South Wharf. “We met many years ago at my work. Louis would stop for a chat each time he saw me. I would look forward to his visits and his charisma and wit would make my day. After a couple of years, he finally had the courage to ask me out on a date... and the rest is history!

Julia describes the proposal: “We were holidaying in Thailand. He had secretly organised a beautiful candlelit dinner on the beach, with our very own waiter for the night. He was drinking the champagne a lot quicker than usual this night. The ring came out on a dessert tray and at the same time as he got down on one knee, some fireworks went off! It was just like a fairytale!

“Julia’s highlight: “Hands down, my highlight was waking down the aisle in the

church. It was an indescribable feeling but one I will never forget. A beautiful moment with my father while looking ahead to see the look in my hubby-to-be’s eyes!” Louis’ highlight: “That’s easy... seeing my beautiful bride at the top of the aisle. She was the most stunning bride I have ever seen.”

“Louis and I had a pretty clear idea of the kind of wedding we were after and we still laugh to our selves today about how easy everything was, it all just fell into place! We chose Nicole Taranto Photography to photograph our day.” Julia wore a custom Jordanna Regan Couture lace dress. Her bridesmaids wore Hello Molly dresses. Hair was by Julia Cochrane and makeup by Jess Sanz MUA. The men were dressed by Black Jacket Suiting. Flowers were by The External Vase, Bendigo and the cake was by Splendid Servings, Victoria. The gorgeous flower wall was by White Luxe, Vic. For their first dance, the couple chose ‘Stand by Me’ - Ben E. King: “We felt it had enough meaning and it was a song we both loved having a boogie to!” “We chose to spend our honeymoon back in Thailand at the same resort we got engaged exactly 12 months before. We absolutely loved everything about Koh Samui and this place now holds a very special place in our hearts.”

“Our advice for anyone planning their wedding is... Relax, everything will come together! When Louis and I walked into the venue we had tears in our eyes just seeing every single little detail come to life that we had worked so hard to create. Just remember it will all be so worth it on the day. Enjoy every moment and take lots of photos!

ONTREND BRIDAL ONLINE asked WILD BUNCH WEDDINGS why everything has changed in the world of WEDDING VIDEOS.

Video has changed. It is no longer hours of poorly-lit cheesy footage. Video is not what it was 10 years ago, or even 3 years ago. Seriously, everything has changed! We can now film and edit on the same equipment and editing programs they are using in Hollywood. Low light sensors, gimbal stabilizers, slow motion, high-end audio recording gear, 4K. There are no excuses, it’s all down to your wedding videographer. This is fantastic, you can now find a wide range of affordable and great quality wedding video businesses to film your wedding. However it also makes it all the more important to choose the right one. So here’s 5 tips from Wild Bunch Weddings to help choose your wedding videographer: 1. Have a look at their work, not just one video, look at 3 or 4. Make sure they’ve been around a few years. 2. Is the business recommended by other wedding industry professionals? This is a good sign if another wedding business is willing to stake their reputation on them too. 3. Check out their social media pages (Instagram and Facebook); if they are active it’s a good sign. 4. Get in touch with them by phone or email and lock that wedding date in with plenty of time. 5. Don’t be afraid to set aside a good budget, at least as much as a good photographer. We hear all the time about the cheap wedding videographer disaster. Please don’t do it. Here are our top reasons to get a wedding videographer >> Both pictures and videos have an unreal quality: they can stop time. But videos allow you to see and hear your grandfather’s joy as you invite him onto the dancefloor for a special dance alone with you. >> For the moving pictures. The biggest reason to hire a videographer is because he or she will create a moving picture of your day. You can relive your wedding morning and the conversations you and your bridesmaids shared as well as your emotion-filled walk down the aisle. Every move you made during you first dance can be watched again and again. Here’s some video inspiration courtesy Wild Bunch Weddings... click on the live links and enjoy !!!

Let’s Celebrate! Celebrating is a global language – it is something to cherish, whether it’s a celebration of love, a milestone or a newborn, making merriments with those who mean a lot to you is within the very nature of being human. Planning a fabulous celebration can, however, strike fear into the hearts and wallets of even the most seasoned party-lover – something not lost on HOORAY!, the bi-monthly magazine that celebrates the art of entertaining. Capturing some of the world’s most gorgeous and varied celebrations, Celebrate by HOORAY! is a publication that seeks to inspire future festivities, and give more people even more reasons to celebrate – without the need for a huge budget or access to a mansion. This isn’t just any book however, just like the events it showcases aren’t just any events. Celebrate is a 230 page mook – a magazine and book hybrid featuring carefully curated events from around the world that showcase styling, atmosphere and celebrations that nourish the mind, the eye, the spirit and of course, the stomach. Celebrate showcases six categories of celebrations: love; birthdays; holidays; showers; and community, providing vital inspiration party planners can truly take hold of and translate to their own celebrations. From Halloween to baby showers, garden weddings to Valentine’s parties, or birthday parties to fundraisers – the valley of inspiration within Celebrate is vast and designed to prove not only useful, but inspirational to event planners of all kinds. For HOORAY! editor Renee Douros, the need to produce the 230 page mook stemmed from the fact that “some events are just too beautiful not to be showcased in such a gorgeous way – and that doesn’t mean they are the most expensive or elaborate. Celebrate by HOORAY! gives amazing events from around the world their own platform, but does so in a way that anyone planning a celebration can take inspiration for their own event.” RRP $19.95 Stockists http://www.hooraymag.com/stockists/

When Astrid and Heath asked Caitlin from A Little Cake Place to make their wedding cake and create Minnie & Mickey cake toppers for it, we had to know what made them choose these cute characters to adorn their cake... “We are both die-hard Disney fans.Well Heath was a closet fan until I wanted to watch a Disney Marathon and the next thing I knew, he had them all on his USB. So it became a bit of a running joke between us.” Astrid

Ceremony & Reception @ Peppers Noosa Resort & Villas

30 April 2016

Danica Guy and Matthew Edmonds tied the knot on 30 April 2016 in a romantic ‘wet weather backup’ ceremony and reception at Peppers Noosa Resort & Villas. Their ceremony was conducted by Jay Flood of Noosa Style Ceremonies. Danica was dressed by Anna Campbell, The Babushka Ballerina, Brisbane and her bridesmaids wore Review dresses. The bride also wore a bespoke wrist cuff, hairpiece and earrings by Scarlett’s Delight bridal and gemstone jewellery, Brisbane. Makeup by Tasleema Nigh and hair by Evalyn Parsons Hair. Matthew and his groomsmen wore suits by Wil Valor, Brisbane.

First Class Functions styled the ceremony and reception and the flowers were created by Danica’s mother. The wedding cake was made by Danica’s grandmother and sister-in-law. The cheese tower was provided by The Cheese Bar, Tognini’s Café and was assembled by Peppers Noosa Resort & Villas. Acoustic Musician and DJ, Marty Sima, provided the music. The couple chose Alan Hughes Photography to photograph their wedding and Wild Bunch Weddings to record their day in moving pictures.

Danica and Matt are just the sweetest couple... their love was infectious and they simply couldn’t wait any longer to say “I do”.Their wedding was put together in 3 months, with Danica’s talented friends and family contributing to the day. While the rain came down, their spirits did not dampen. Danica’s mother created all the floral arrangements that matched perfectly with the colour palette of coral and navy blue. The raw wooden tables complemented the abundance of lush greenery and the overall industrial vibe of Peppers Noosa Resort & Villas. FELICITY McSHANE CMC, JP (Qual.) Fusion Elements - Life Celebrations

Felicity McShane, Director of Fusion Elements, is a Brisbane-based, qualified Civil Marriage Celebrant. “My speciality is in creating powerful, respectful and unique ceremonies, offering tailored packages to suit your life celebrations: Weddings, Vow Renewals, Commitment Ceremonies, Naming Days and Funerals.” Contact Felicity M: 0413 192 848 E: felicity@fusionelements.com.au www.fusionelements.com.au www.facebook.com/fusionelements

OnTrend Bridal Online asked Felicity McShane CMC, JP (Qual.) for her TOP 10 TIPS FOR A BESPOKE WEDDING CEREMONY ! Before engaging the services of an Authorised Celebrant, it is always good to have conducted some research on what this person has to do for you, and how they can help you plan your perfect ceremony. Your Celebrant creates an atmosphere at your ceremony so that all of your guests can relate to your personal relationship journey together. It’s a time for celebration. It’s also a time for your married life to begin. It’s exciting and when you are finally announced ‘Mr & Mrs’, that feeling is only enhanced by the fact that your chosen Authorised Celebrant has just made it legal! Yes, that’s right, you are now legally married. 1 Choose a Celebrant on personality and professionalism, not budget. Choosing the right Celebrant to perform what will be one of the biggest and most special moments in your life is an investment. I am often asked “How much do I charge?” as the first question, without the couples really understanding the work that goes into a ceremony. On average, we spend 1015 hours per ceremony, meeting with the couples, sending out emails to make sure we have the correct information, ensuring that if something legal comes up, it is dealt with correctly, filling out paperwork, researching topics of discussion, liaising

with wedding vendors working on the same wedding and writing, and rewriting, and rewriting until we have a ceremony worth presenting, rehearsing and conducting. It’s important to take note that an Authorised Celebrant is running a small business. They must be fully registered with the Attorney General, attend Ongoing Professional Development days to keep up to date with any changes in the Marriage Act, abide by a code of practice, provide resources and a PA system, be fully insured for Public and Indemnity Insurance, provide transport and the general everyday running costs associated with their business such as communications, marketing, resources and memberships. Choosing the right Authorised Celebrant is an investment. This is the person who ensures your wedding meets all the legal requirements and validates your marriage. Your Authorised Celebrant ensures your ceremony is conducted professionally and with the utmost respect given to the responsibilities of marriage. It is always a good idea to speak with a few different Authorised Celebrants to gain an understanding of what you are looking for. Ask yourself: Are they friendly? Am I getting the correct information? Are they professional? Are they qualified? Are they registered with the Attorney General? Are they fully insured and, most importantly, are they willing to work with you to achieve your dream wedding? Ensure when planning your budget for your wedding that you are prepared to invest a little bit extra for something that can leave a lasting impression on your marriage.

2 Have ideas that you want to incorporate into your ceremony. It’s important to have an idea of how long you would like your ceremony to be? What rituals, if any, you would like to incorporate? Do you want to include people who are not already in the bridal party? There are so many different ideas that can be included and it really does come down to personal preference. From traditional, cultural, spiritual, religious and family, come many symbolic gestures that may have special or different meanings to be celebrated. We live in a multi-cultural society and couples like to acknowledge traditions from their own heritage. This helps the couple to retain their own connection with their traditions/culture. Whatever the ritual, it gives the congregation a sense of belonging and specialness in the eyes of the couple and can be seen to strengthen the bond between the couple. As a Celebrant, being open to suggestion and being able to perform any type of cultural/tradition ritual is a given. If we are not certain how to perform it, then we research it, practice it and learn it. A ritual can create a powerful moment between the couple involved and evoke a sense of deepened love not felt before towards one another. It is a privilege and honour to be asked to be a part of that and make it all happen. 3 Originality is the key to the successful delivery of your ceremony. The more information about yourselves you can give your Celebrant the better. I believe in creating powerful, respectful and unique ceremonies that are tailored to your individual needs, fusing those elements of love that are true to your dreams of your special day. Keep it real. Keep it simple and the elegance will flow. We can only write your story with the information we are given. There is nothing worse than going to a wedding and not being able to relate to what the Celebrant is saying. During your sessions, make sure your Celebrant has your story correct. It’s about all of those moments in time that have lead you to each other, moments to be cherished and celebrated... and creating memories for your future. Celebrants won’t always use all of the information you give them, however, they will be looking at how you interact with each other, your body language towards each other, how you speak in conversation with each other. This gives the Celebrant a wellrounded view on who you are in your relationship.

4 Be in the moment on the day. Let your vendors do the stressing for you! The stage is set and its show time! By now, all of the planning is done, the things that could go wrong have come and gone and on the day, what will be, will be. It won’t matter now if the cake doesn’t look right, if the sashes on the chair are the wrong shade of purple or if the flowers aren’t exactly how you imagined. You’re about to walk down the aisle and pledge your love to your best friend for the rest of your life. So just enjoy the moment. Feel amazing, eat loads of food and drink loads of water during the preparation phase so you have energy to entertain your guests. Noone else will know about the things that won’t go to plan anyway. They are all there to support your marriage and celebrate in the moment with you. Only you will know the difference and it no longer matters. Your vendors will all be busy making sure you can enjoy yourself with your guests and relax. It is up to them now to make sure everything is sorted for you. 5 Always have a wet weather back up plan and budget for it! You can’t predict when Mother Nature will strike and when picking a date, the most important item for planning your ceremony venue option is to consider budgeting for a wet weather plan! Whether you are having a garden ceremony, beach ceremony or a backyard ceremony, it is always a good idea to consider an undercover area for those times when the heavens open up and it doesn’t stop raining for a few days. Your day won’t be ruined by the wet weather. A different plan of attack is put in place. Allocate someone to be able to contact all of your guests as to the new arrangements. Make sure you let all your vendors know in advance what you have decided. There is nothing worse than showing up to a ceremony area and not having half of your vendors there! 6 Ask your Celebrant for recommendations for other service providers. Celebrants are unique in that they get to work with so many wonderful industry professionals including venues, photographers, musicians and DJs, stylists, planners, hair and makeup artists, florists, cake decorators and more. If you are having trouble narrowing down your own search, just ask the Celebrant if they have any feedback on the vendors you are considering.

7 Discuss your vision for the full day with your Celebrant. Your Celebrant is in the best position to make any announcements to advise your guests what will happen once the ceremony has concluded... so in the planning stage of the ceremony, you will need to discuss things such as any special instructions regarding the area, fire exits, group and family photo positions, what time the canapÊs and drinks will start and where, etc. Announcements ensure there is no confusion among your guests and most importantly, they won’t have to worry the Bride and Groom with these details. 8 Be realistic in your expectations. The last thing any vendor wants to hear is that the Bride and Groom did not enjoy their day because something happened and nothing was said or done about it. It is really important to communicate all of your plans for your day with your vendors. As professionals, we can all offer support and guidance on different situations and it is up to you to communicate specifically what it is you want and can work with. Sometimes working from a run sheet can help with timing, lists for photography options, music, ceremony start time, transport... everything has to run like clockwork in order to maintain a smooth

transition into your evening and meal time. All of your vendors will work with one another to ensure we meet the standards for what you have planned as your vision for your special day. 9 Let your Celebrant know about any concerns you may have with guests. Sometimes in life, families and friends come together and may not necessarily co-exist in harmony! This can add to the stress of making sure your day will be everything you have dreamed. Whether there are blended family situations or not, it is an everyday reality. So how do you deal with it? You will find that because they are attending a wedding, they will be on their best behaviour. This is called wedding etiquette. Sometimes, out of respect for both the Bride and Groom, a third person is allocated the task to facilitate the seating arrangements and make sure that people are separated during the ceremony and reception. It is usually a family member, however, it has been known that on occasion the Celebrant is allocated this for the ceremony duration and then the venue wedding coordinator will take over. It is very rare for anyone to have to step in but it can be done when necessary to ease the minds of the couple involved.

10 Publicly thank your vendors – a little goes a long way. Your day has come and gone. Your expectations were exceeded and now you have an opportunity to let the world know just how much your special day meant to you and how your vendors helped create it. Show your appreciation for your vendors by leaving them a testimonial and review that can be shared with future Brides and Grooms. There are so many public sites that offer a rating system. This does have an impact on their business and your testimonial could be the key to ensure that not only are you promoting them because they were amazing, but they could be amazing for new clients as well. Vendors love hearing feedback to make sure they are on the right track when it comes to their work. It’s important to receive the feedback as this helps us to identify our strengths and weaknesses in the world of weddings. You may even find yourself in a new situation at the end of all of the planning with some of your vendors... you may become lifelong friends.

Weddings are quite enough to be getting on with, without having to worry about whether your teeth are going to be at their gleaming best when the photographer shows up. Don’t get caught out, follow these 5 easy tips and you need never look back on photos from the big day and wish you’d done something differently. 1: Eyes The eyes are the windows to the soul, so don’t discount their importance when it comes to your smile. A smile that you force won’t extend to your eyes, and the effect will leave something to be desired. Try to be confident: look the camera or whoever you’re smiling at in the eye, tilt your head slightly and let intuition do the rest. Don’t try to smooth out every line: they’re all part of what makes your face unique and expressive. 2: Relax It’s surprisingly important not to clench your teeth. Having them slightly apart will help to make your smile look more natural and less forced. Clenching your teeth forces the muscles in your face to contract, and the effect will be obvious on your face. It will also restrict the movement of your lips, making the smile look less natural... so relax and enjoy yourself! 3: Tongue Your tongue may not be seen in the photos you take, but where you hold it in your mouth can have an effect on the parts of your face that will be seen. For the best results photographically, bring your tongue to the roof of your mouth, just behind your front teeth. The effect will be a slightly-lowered jaw and a more natural, relaxed look. 4: Invest in a Whitening Procedure It doesn’t have to be an expensive investment... there are a range of options for improving your smile, at home or in the dentist’s chair. Technology has come a long way and these procedures can be extremely effective. 5: Don’t go Overboard Teeth that are too white can often look worse than teeth that are perhaps on the slightly yellower side. A good rule of thumb is to not try for anything whiter than the whites of your eyes, or the effect can be unnatural. Also, being too vigorous in your brushing regime or employing intense whitening methods can be damaging to your tooth enamel, so always exercise restraint and caution. These five smile-friendly tips were brought to you by Cole Dental http://www.coledental.com.au

REBECCA WILLIAMS PHOTOGRAPHY

Belinda and Richard’s wedding was full of warmth and happiness. The weather had a few surprises up its sleeve that day. It rained fairly consistently all day leading up to the ceremony, however, just as Belinda arrived, the sun started to peek through the clouds. It set a beautiful ambience for the ceremony, as if it was ‘meant to be’. I know Belinda and Richard have a wonderful future ahead of them, I can see they absolutely adore each other.

Congratulations Sam & Ryan

9 April 2016

Samantha and Ryan met through two of their best friends: “It was a real ‘Love at First Sight Story’... and after just two dates, I knew he was ‘The One’! Four months after we began dating, we decided we would go on a spontaneous week’s holiday to Fiji, where he asked: ‘will you be my wife?’ with a beautiful blue sapphire and white gold engagement ring. I melted in tears and just said ‘Are you serious?’ about three times before saying ‘yes yes yes!’”

Samantha’s mum and Pinterest were the biggest help in orgainsing and planning their wedding. The ceremony was held at Macarthur Park Gardens Chapel, Alexandra Hills and was followed by a reception at Shangri La Gardens, Wynnum West. The bride wore When Freddie Met Lilly and the bridesmaids, groom and groomsmen were all dressed by Ferrari Formal and Bridal Capalaba. Hair was by Alexander Wolfe and makeup by Louise Marie Lelo.

The couple chose Special Memories Photography to capture the magic of their wedding day. “The theme of our wedding was ‘Rustic Fairytale’. I just wanted to look like a princess and have a natural fairytale wedding. My grandmother, Judy Holt (who I am very close to and has bad Alzheimer’s) was unable to attend our wedding. I didn’t want her to miss out on the special occasion, so I had our limo driver and photographer detour to her Aged Care home so I could get some very special photos with her, all dressed up before our ceremony. ” Their first dance was to ‘I’ll Be - Edwin McCain’. Samantha explains: “I chose this song because it was from my favourite teenage movie called ‘A Cinderella Story’ with Hilary Duff - when they are dancing under the rotunda dressed as Cinderella and Prince Charming. OMG... ever since I saw that, I always said it would be my wedding song!” Sam and Ryan honeymooned at Rosebrook Cottages, Maleny and are planning a romantic trip to New Zealand soon.

Angie’s Floral Design created the gorgeous wedding flowers.

When it comes to offering newly-wed advice to others planning their day, the couple both agree: “Literally stop every hour throughout the entire wedding day to take five deep breaths and actually take in everything around you. It goes too quickly and you don’t want to miss a thing! Also don’t worry about what anyone else thinks, it is your wedding so plan it how you like and invite or don’t invite whoever you want.”

Samantha’s wedding highlight: “Our vows to each other, which we kept secret until we read them to each other in the chapel... Ryan made me blubber in tears when he said his! I was also blown away that all of our loved ones were there to see us get married.” Ryan’s wedding highlight: “When the doors of the chapel opened and I saw Sam walking through them towards me”

Congratulations Amanda & Aaron 29 October 2015

You don’t need blue skies and sunshine on your wedding day to create breathtaking images... the Sunshine Coast Hinterland is renowned for its romantic fog and the result is pure magic.

Amanda Gatfield married Aaron Prosser on 29 October 2015 at Flaxton Gardens in the picturesque Sunshine Coast Hinterland. Their celebrant was Kathryn Ford. Aaron was a customer of Amanda’s at her workplace, where she managed his account and business. The romantic proposal took place during a birthday weekend when Aaron took Amanda to Byron Bay. He proposed on a rainy evening sunset at the beach by taking a large present out of his backpack. When Amanda opened it, the box was stuffed with lots of paper and filling... and when she reached the bottom, she found the ring. The theme of the wedding was “Handmade & Rustic”... The invitations and decorations were made by the couple. Amanda’s dress was from Luv Bridal and Formal and the bridesmaids’ dresses were from JJ’s House. Hair by Clairizma Hair and makeup by Beauty by Corinne. The men wore Tarocash suits. The flowers were by Willow Bud and the cake was by Cake Junior. The couple chose Jennifer Oliphant to photograph their wedding. James Dean provided live music for the ceremony and the reception. “A family friend lent us their American Muscle Cars. They drove for us and were also guests at the wedding.” The couple honeymooned in Singapore and Indonesia (Lombok and Gili Islands). “We chose these destinations because we both hadn’t been there before and we wanted to incorporate the city and the beach... lots of activities and relaxing to be done!

“We chose ‘Simply The Best - Tina Turner & Jimmy Barnes’ for our first dance... because Amanda has always loved it for a wedding dance and this version because Aaron loves Jimmy Barnes. It was upbeat and fun. We had a friend teach us a choreographed routine.”

OUR HIGHLIGHTS: Amanda - “Taking in the day as it happens. It was a rainy day and I knew we were going to be in the wet weather room as Plan B. However, when I arrived Aaron had made a last-minute decision to move the ceremony outside when it stopped raining. All our guests picked up chairs, rolled out carpets, moved flowers and made it happen to surprise me and have the ceremony outside!” Aaron - “Making the last-minute decision to change the ceremony plan to outside when he saw the weather clearing briefly.” “Our advice for anyone planning their wedding is to ensure your wedding is about you... everything that you want and not someone else’s opinion. Do your research with suppliers and book them based on your gut feeling (and your budget). All of our decisions were based on gut feeling and I couldn’t fault a single supplier, their products or services. Delegate jobs to your bridesmaids and let them help you instead of taking on everything yourself. Enjoy the planning process and the day itself. It will be over before you know it!” Amanda + Aaron

Velbella @ Karen Tran event

Velbella’s team of Airbrush Makeup Artists had the privilege of being involved in the amazing Karen Tran event. Lauren Veling, the Director of Velbella shares her memories of this magical experience...

Being able to do makeup for the photo shoot and Karen’s team, along with Karen herself, was definitely a career highlight. Karen is such a beautiful person inside and out and her humble nature shone right through and was evident in the gratitude she showed towards everyone involved in the day. Velbella loved working alongside the fabulous House of Zion as they created beautiful hairstyles while the Velbella team created romantic makeup looks to fit with the theme of the Gala event. The styling and flowers were unbelievable... nothing like Brisbane has ever seen! The whole room was a magical world of elegance, sophistication and extravagance. Alysia from Celebrations by Alysia did a spectacular job organising the event and her stunning daughter Billie was the perfect model for the photo shoot. Velbella was asked personally to do make up for this event and it was such an honour to be involved and to work so closely alongside some amazing Brisbane wedding vendors and most of all, Karen Tran herself.

KATE & TOM’S SURPRISE WEDDING 14.11.2015 @ St Finbars Church, Ashgrove Ashleigh Roach Photography

Kate Norris met Tom O’Driscoll at work. Kate describes Tom’s romantic proposal: “We were travelling overseas on a year-long holiday to Europe and Eastern Africa. We were staying in Tuscany and Tommy organised for a picnic to be set up behind an old chapel looking out over vineyards and sunflower fields. He took me on a bike ride and we ‘stumbled’ across this beautiful picnic. I thought it was someone else’s romantic picnic and yelled at Tommy to move away from it... he then turned around and knelt on one knee and proposed to me. We had a long engagement (two and a half years). After we returned from overseas, we bought an old house in Ashgrove and spent the next couple of years renovating it. Because of the renovations, the wedding planning was put on hold. When we knew our renovations were close to being finished, we decided to invite our family and friends over for a ‘housewarming party’ and surprised them by getting married at our local church... St Finbars... which is conveniently located across the road from our house. It is also the church Tom’s grandparents were married in 60 years earlier.”

“We announced the surprise once everyone had arrived, we asked our guests to congregate on our top deck and spoke over an old school microphone. I then dashed out and drove to my parents’ house to get ready and was back at the church 40 minutes later to say “I do!”. We then transported our guests via bus to Arthur’s Green at Red Hill, where a large clear marquee was set up, with a dance floor, a stage for the band, a 70’s bar caravan, bar tables and stools and an outdoor lounge area. The owner, Jimmy, went above and beyond to ensure everything ran smoothly. We danced the night away then headed out, so we didn’t arrive home until 4am, which is always the sign of a good night!” “I spent my wedding day feeling very relaxed... I visited my regular amazing hairdresser, Lisa at Purple Daze Hair Studio in Paddington. She did the most amazing job with my hair. I absolutely loved it and it stayed in until 4am the next day... despite rain, wind and lots of dancing! We used CL Weddings and Events for the styling. Carly was so helpful... she has amazing style and really understood the type of look we were trying to create. ” visit

Congratulations Stephanie & Reid 16 January 2016

Stephanie White and Reid Baldry were married on 16 January 2016 in a ceremony at Brisbane Boys College, followed by a reception at The Brisbane Club. They met at a popular bar in Brisbane: “Our best friends (who were dating) decided to play matchmaker. It wasn’t until 6 weeks after our first meeting that we both plucked up enough courage to go to a mutual birthday party where we eventually got together... after much deliberation.” Stephanie describes the proposal: “I had just finished my last exams and Reid organised a beach trip in celebration of me finishing my degree. He woke up very early and was so excited to be going to the beach. I, on the hand, was so tired from studying and just wanted to sleep! He kept pushing me to get out of bed so that we could go. We drove to our favourite beach in northern NSW Cabarita, where he got down on one knee with a beautiful temporary ring. What made this temporary ring even more special was that Reid had managed to track down an Oroton ring that I had lost three years prior. The Oroton ring was the very first present he ever gave me and I wore it all the time until I misplaced it. He had contacted Oroton in Australia, and the US trying to find a replacement. He finally found the ring being sold on Gumtree in Sydney and asked his cousin to go and pick it up. He then had the ring posted to his friend’s house so that I wouldn’t find out. The proposal was beautiful and I now have my Oroton ring back as well as a gorgeous engagement ring.”

When it came to planning their day, Stephanie and Reid had help from many people, including Reid’s parents Jeff and Judy and Stephanie’s parents Morag and Geoff: “Our family friend, Marg Hoyes created the reception and chapel flowers and Hillary Wall painted our beautiful wedding sign. The invitations were designed by Nicola White and printed by us.”

“Every bride wants to feel like a movie star on her big day, but I felt like one when my Alexander McQueen dress arrived! The excitement of receiving my dress in a big beautiful box was the same as the scene in Sex and The City when Carrie opens the box with her Vivienne Westwood masterpiece.”

Stephanie describes herself as a ‘minimalist’... “I am very much influenced by sleek and modern wedding dresses. I like clean lines, with minimal jewellery and was very happy to find my oneshoulder, mermaid gown which was fastened with a beautiful sash. Fewer embellishments don’t necessarily mean fewer details, in fact sleek dresses may lack ornamentation but make up for it in structure and tailoring.” The couple chose Nick Evans Photography to photograph their wedding. The bridesmaids’ dresses were by Shona Joy. Hair by Kaylah Nowlan and makeup by Ellen Armstrong. The men wore Country Road. The bouquets, buttonholes and cake flowers were by Jacqui M Design. The 1929 Navy Rolls Royce Limousine was supplied by Tic, Tac Tours and the cake was by Eden Cakes and Cupcakes. The theme and inspiration for the day was “Old World Glam”. The music was provided by Radio Club Band. The couple chose ‘Moondance’ - Van Morrison for their first dance: “We chose this song as the lyrics really encapsulate our relationship and the music is a bit jazzy and makes us think of beautiful old jazz clubs. The chorus lines... ‘Can I just have one a’ more Moondance with you, my love... Can I just make some more romance with a-you, my love.’ really resonated with us. Also it is the only song we know that has the word ‘fantabulous’ in it. A classic!” Stephanie’s parents held their wedding reception at The Brisbane Club so the venue has many special memories for their family: “As a wedding gift, my grandmother gifted us the beautiful 3-tiered wedding cake, which made it all the more special.”

“As part of our package, The Brisbane Club booked a suite at the Sofitel for us. After our reception we walked across to the Sofitel, walking through Central Station to get to the entrance. So many people called out and congratulated us, and had a little chuckle as they all thought we were going to catch a train home after our wedding!” OUR NEWLYWED ADVICE “After the ceremony we greeted everyone, oneby-one as they left the chapel. This made sure we got to speak to every single person and thank them for coming and being part of our lives. This event is an expression of yourselves, but it’s not all you’ll ever be. It’s just the beginning! Be a team throughout the entire process. It’s easy for you two to become divided with other’s opinions. But in the end, this is a celebration of your love and future together, and so every choice should be yours alone. Finish your ‘to-do’ list early... the sooner you can get done with small things the better, because the closer the wedding gets, the bigger the small tedious things tend to get.” THE HONEYMOON “Reid and I have such a travel bug and have been backpacking together for 10 years, managing to visit 45 countries across 6 continents, so it was only fitting that we decided on our honeymoon destination before even booking our wedding! We settled on Central America, flying into San Jose, Costa Rica and finishing in Cancun, Mexico, visiting Nicaragua, El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala and Belize along the way. We loved Central America with its rainforests filled with unexplored Mayan ruins, beautiful turquoise waters, and reefs filled with life... not to mention the most amazing food (including tacos, empanadas, and burritos) you have ever eaten.”

Stephanie’s highlight... “My entrance and walking down the aisle to ‘Somewhere over the Rainbow’ by Israel Kamakawiw’ole... and seeing my groom and all of our guests grinning back at me. It’s such a lovely song and suited our occasion so well. It will always be one of those moments I will never forget.” Reid’s highlight... “The highlight of the day for me was walking/dancing down the aisle to Queen - ‘Crazy Little Thing Called Love’, knowing that the formal part of the day was done and now the fun could really begin! I absolutely loved at the end of our ceremony that everyone started having a little dance and singing along to the song.”

Congratulations Lucy & Rob

16 January 2016

Lucy Wiles and Robert Andrew were married on 16 January 2016 in a ceremony at St Mary’s Anglican Church, Kangaroo Point, followed by a reception at The Landing at Dockside. Lucy and Robert met through mutual friends at a party. Robert shares the proposal: “While we were posted to Tamworth, I convinced Lucy to accompany me to the Oxley Lookout to observe a forecast ‘meteor shower’. Despite a distinct lack of ‘meteors’, a fine sunset over Country NSW and a bended knee were enough to draw a ‘Yes’ from Lucy.” The invitations and wedding signage were created by Liam Matthews Design. “Liam is so creative and passionate about his work.” Hair was by Belinda Diversi Hair and makeup by Kiara Brooke Makeup Artist (a family friend). The groom and two groomsmen wore Patrol Blues as current serving officers in the Australian Army. The other groomsmen wore the ‘James’ dinner suit hired from Tony Barlow. “Rob chose to wear his Military Uniform which was a really special touch for our wedding. He organised a guard of honour where all of his Military friends raised their swords for us to walk through.”

Lucy wore a Bertossi Brides dress by Paddington Weddings... “Gill and Anne were so wonderful to work with.” The bridesmaids’ dresses were made by the mum of one of the bridesmaids... “Diane made the amazing bridesmaids dresses after we couldn’t find something that suited all the girls. She created the perfect dress that suited each bridesmaid’s personality and body.”

“We chose Evernew Studio to photograph our day. Andy, Mitch and the team worked so hard to capture every single moment of our day. The photos are breathtaking.” The flowers were by Giraween Flowers in Samford Valley. “We had a mixture of peonies, freesias, roses, carnations, dahlias and lily of the valley. It was a mixture of what my mum, grandma and nan had on their wedding days. We opted for fresh, simple and elegant with our decorations... with an array of fresh white flowers and an abundance of candles and white frames with all our signage. We had the same suite design from our invitations, which tied it all together beautifully. My mum made our beautiful 4-tier cake of cherry ripe mud and vanilla sponge with white chocolate and raspberry icing. That was really important to us! Steph Costa from Procrastabaking decorated our cake. We cut the cake with the same cake knife my grandparents and parents used.”

“During our ceremony we had friends, Bridget and Mairead Matthews from the Boxties sing. Everyone had goose bumps! For our reception, we had Radio Club Band who kept our guests entertained all night! Our first dance was to ‘Everything’ - Michael Bublé... the lyrics are perfect - we couldn’t say it better ourselves.” LUCY’S HIGHLIGHT “That’s so hard! Having my Dad walk me down the aisle and locking eyes with Rob for the first time surrounded by our nearest and dearest – that’s hard to beat!” ROB’S HIGHLIGHT “My favourite part of the day was escorting my new wife through a sword guard of honour to our waiting family and friends on the lawn of the church, all the while the church bells were ringing for all of Brisbane to hear!”

“Our reception was held at The Landing at Dockside. Penny was incredible and helped with absolutely everything!”

THE HONEYMOON French Polynesia; Tahiti, Bora Bora and Moorea. “We wanted to relax after a busy few months and had always wanted to visit. It felt as though we were living in a postcard!” NEWLYWED ADVICE “Find some time to relax and enjoy your special day. It goes way too quickly! And take lots of photos, its so nice to relive all those special moments!”

ONTREND BRIDAL ONLINE HONEYMOON INSPIRATION

ONTREND BRIDAL ONLINE asked Booking.com how to get more

BANG for your HONEYMOON BUCK ...

Your Honeymoon will probably be one of the most expensive trips you will take, yet the grand scale of plans doesn’t necessarily have to correlate with price. Even the most in-demand or far-flung destinations have certain dates when you’ll get more for your money, without having to sacrifice good weather or other important factors. To help newlyweds plan the perfect trip, Booking.com has created a guide to the best honeymoon destinations and the best times to go. Booking.com data specialists first looked at the average price per night of 4* and 5* accommodation in some of the world’s most popular honeymoon destinations. Then, to determine which destinations to recommend for which season, they looked at the yearly overview of pricing fluctuations to find the best weeks to stay in each place. December – February KYOTO For honeymooners seeking something unconventional, Kyoto promises to deliver. Alongside its dreamy tea houses, gardens and Buddhist temples, it’s also a city of sleek modernity (hopping on the bullet train is a real treat) with a phenomenal choice of Michelin-starred restaurants. Though it may be biting cold at this time of year, if you’re willing to wrap up warm, the peaceful shrines empty of crowds and – if you’re lucky – coated with snow, are blissfully romantic. And Japanese soul food Nabe (hot pot) is perfect for warming up. Around Christmas is also known as a time for romance in Japan, with Christmas Eve traditionally the most important night of the year in terms of impressing your lover. Last year, the final week of January was ¥19926 on average for 4* and 5* accommodations, 53% cheaper than the most expensive week of the year at ¥42696.

PARIS Snuggle up in a cosy Parisian café, wander the frosty Jardin des Tuileries before stopping off at The Louvre or eyeing up the glittering festive window displays at Galeries Lafayette. The city of love is a magical honeymoon destination, with elegant architecture lining leafy boulevards and the illuminated Champs-Elysees perfect for a romantic nighttime stroll. It’s easy to see why Paris is an oldtime honeymoon favourite, with its combination of art and history, fine dining and splendid cityscape. Last year, the final week of February was €171 on average for 4* and 5* accommodations, 45% cheaper than the most expensive week of the year at €308 in June.

March – May KAUAI The oldest of the Hawaiian Islands, Kauai is a surreal tropical utopia. Hike through its lush green rainforest, through canyons and valleys and come across cascades and dramatic mountain peaks. The island’s pristine white sandy beaches offer fantastic surf, while kayaking, sailing and snorkelling are also popular here. But a honeymoon in Kauai doesn’t have to be jam-packed with activity, its appeal also lies in its seclusion – its natural beauty and quiet mean you’ll feel like you’ve gone completely off the beaten track even when staying in a smart hotel. Prices decreased towards the end of May last year, with the third week of May USD408 on average for 4* and 5* accommodations, 36% cheaper than the most expensive week of the year at USD637.

SAINT BARTHELEMY The sophistication and stunning natural surroundings of St Barts make it a classic honeymoon go-to. Expect aquamarine seas, divine beaches and glamourous accommodation. The island has a distinctly St Tropez feel, meaning gourmet food and lots of glitz. Aside from shopping and people-watching, you could easily while away your holiday exploring and snorkeling off the island’s 22 beaches, each one embodying a particular laid-back St Barts vibe. Last year, the penultimate week of April was €515 on average for 4* and 5* accommodations, 64% cheaper than the most expensive week of the year at €1439 in the lead up to Christmas.

June – August

BOOKING.

HAMILTON ISLAND Hamilton Island, right in the middle of Australia’s Whitsunday archipelago, is so picture-perfect it’s like a cliché. A desert island fantasy, dark green tropical forests rise up from the softest of white sand and the colour of the water is almost blindingly blue. Sailing around the region is a popular, and arguably the best, way to experience it. But you can also relax in one of Hamilton Island’s gorgeous resorts, interspersed with outings to various natural wonders, including the Great Barrier Reef. Last year, the second week of August was AUD391 on average for 4* and 5* accommodations, 27% cheaper than the most expensive week of the year at AUD538.

SONOMA For a classic honeymoon spent indulging in fine wines and haute cuisine while enjoying California’s sunny climes, head to Sonoma. It’s less expensive and more laid-back than Napa while still offering world-class wineries, boutique hotels and striking scenery. Also less crowded than Napa, Sonoma is perfect for peaceful, romantic retreats if you want to feel like you have the valley to yourselves. And the months of June to August offer summer weather while being cheaper than the subsequent harvest season. Last year, the third week of June was USD324 on average for 4* and 5* accommodations, 42% cheaper than the most expensive week of the year in October at USD558.

.COM September – November UDAIPUR Udaipur is often said to be India’s most romantic city, perhaps the world’s. Right at its heart lies the glassy blue surface of Lake Pichola, a man-made lake that lends the city an ethereal and peaceful presence. Perched right in the middle is the Lake Palace and on one side, City Palace; both grand and beguiling structures. Take a romantic boat trip across the lake and admire the beamingly-bright saris of the women washing clothes on the ghats. Then enjoy a rooftop dinner with a backdrop of glittering lights reflected on the water. With the monsoon season coming to a close by mid-September and the winter beginning, this is prime time to visit before the tourist season really hits its peak in December. Udaipur winter entails pleasant, dry sunny days, ideal for exploring the city. Last year, the second week of September was INR7185 on average for 4* and 5* accommodations, 59% cheaper than the most expensive week of the year at INR17498.

SANTORINI The glorious contrast of Santorini’s whitewashed houses with the dazzling blue of the Aegean Sea is one of Greece’s most iconic and breath-taking sights. Enjoy golden Mediterranean sunsets and romantic dinners of fabulous Greek food in tranquility if you visit after the tourist rush of summer. The weather is still sublime but the beaches relatively empty so your honeymoon will feel all the more special. Last year, the final week of October was €278 on average for 4* and 5* accommodations, 63% cheaper than the most expensive week of the year at €744.

BARCELONA... ESPANA

HALF-DAY BIKE TOUR A great way to see the highlights of this cosmopolitan city in a short time is on a guided half-day bike tour. You will be constantly stopping at traffic lights and to take in points of interest along the way. The pace is relaxed and there are no hills to conquer. The excellent English-speaking tour guides will show you the main attractions of Barcelona - including a stop outside Gaudi’s La Sagrada Familia. There are no hills and the pace is easy. Stopping to have lunch (and a well-deserved drink at an outdoor beach bar overlooking the Mediterranean) is an absolute highlight. TAP Portugal flies direct from Lisbon to Barcelona (approx AUD $141 per person inc taxes) www.flytap.com

La Sagrada Familia finally has an approximate completion date... 2026 (or 2028)... more than 140 years after the first stone was laid. What would Gaudi think!!!

Park GĂźell Another architectural masterpiece by the uber-talented Gaudi is Park GĂźell, located in the hills overlooking the city of Barcelona and the Mediterranean. Access to the Monumental Zone of Park GĂźell is limited to 400 tickets every half hour so it is best to purchase tickets (approx 7 EURO) in advance at www.parkguell.cat. A ticket will allow you to visit the most iconic parts of the park at the reserved times and go directly to the entrance checking point if you have a printed ticket or have the QR code on your smart phone or tablet. The views of the city and sea are spectacular. www.parkguell.cat

SAN SEBASTIAN... ESPANA A fast and comfortable train ride north of Barcelona will take you through the Plains of Spain to the northern coastal city of San Sebastian. The city lies at the northwest end of the Pyrenees mountain range and is close to the French border. The climate is mild all year round, with steady rainfall throughout the seasons. San Sebastian’s weather isn’t as sought after as other Spanish coastal destinations as the days are often dull and dreary with rainy periods and sunny interludes. Don’t let the weather deter you from visiting this picturesque city. Its stunning coastline makes it one of the most popular beach resorts in all of northern Spain. San Sebastian is the favourite destination for wealthy Spaniards who want to escape the tourism masses in the south of Spain. The city is sheltered by Isla de Santa Clara and bordered on one side by Mount Urgull and on the other side by Mount Igeldo and is built around the beautiful Bay de La Concha, a crescentshaped beach in the Basque Country. The open-top bus tour is a great way to see this beautiful city, but do take a brolly and a sun hat and you will probably need both before the ride is over! The tapas bars in San Sebastian are legendary and are the best way to sit, relax and enjoy the local wines while tasting the many flavours which Spain is famous for.

VIVA ITALIA... FIRENZE

Florence is the capital city of the Italian region of Tuscany and is the most populated city in Tuscany. Famous for its history, Florence was a centre of medieval European trade and finance and known to be the birthplace of the Renaissance. It is easy to spend days wandering around this historic and very romantic city. And when you can drag yourself away from all this shopping and culture, there are many tours which depart from Florence to take you into the amazingly beautiful Tuscan countryside. We stayed in the heart of downtown Florence in a beautiful 2 bedroom apartment with all the modern conveniences of home. Located above a fabulous Italian Restaurant, the apartment is air-conditioned and quiet with an ensuited main bedroom. “Grazie Alessandro for allowing us to stay in your gorgeous apartment Condotta Suite 14, Piazza Signoria, Via della Condotta, Florence www.airbnb.com.au alessandro@alessandrogiuliattini.com.

TUSCANY IN ONE DAY

TUSCANY IN ONE DAY

WALKABOUT TOURS www.walkaboutflorence.com/italy-tuscany-florence-tours Famous for a wealth of art, history, striking landscapes and outstanding produce, Tuscany really does have the best of all worlds! If you don’t have a lot of time to spare, this tour will allow you to experience the best Tuscany has to offer on a full-day guided coach trip from Florence. There will be time to explore the Gothic city of Siena (famous for its medieval streets) on a guided walking tour which includes a visit to the Gothic cathedral. Next is a visit to an organic wine estate to enjoy a traditional Tuscan lunch and wine tasting among the Sienese Hills, where Chianti wine is produced. You will be seated at long tables on the shaded verandah overlooking the vineyards (just like the movies). After lunch you will visit San Gimignano where you can roam the maze of cobbled streets and small squares, grab a gelato and walk between San Gimignano’s famous 14 towers. Your final stop is Pisa, where you can make an up-close inspection of the Leaning Tower, view the Cathedral, the Baptistery and monumental Cemetery in Pisa before returning to Florence.

ONLINE

A visit to Siena will transport you back to the Middle Ages. The grand cathedral, built in the 1200s, has treasured artworks and marvellous marble floors. The Piazza del Campo, the main town square (above) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s also home to the Palio, perhaps the most infamous horse race in the world. This is a medieval tradition involving bareback riders racing on cobblestones. Siena is an easy day trip by train from Florence, just 43 miles away.

DAY TRIP TO CINQUE TERRE

WALKABOUT TOURS www.walkaboutflorence.com/italytuscany-florence-tours Join the only tour that takes you to the Cinque Terre on a one-day hiking trip from Florence. Hiking is the only way to truly experience the magic of the Cinque Terre. Take a break from the bustle of the city to hike this UNESCO World Heritage-listed site. It’s a unique and memorable experience, exploring the only unspoilt survivor of the genuine Italian Riviera. You don’t need to be super-fit to hike on this tour. You will be hiking between two of the five villages which form Cinque Terre (which translates to Five Lands and is comprised of the five small coastal villages of Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso in the Italian region of Liguria). At the end of the hike, you will be treated to a fabulous lunch in a local restaurant overlooking the Mediterranean and the hillsides covered with vineyards. There’s time to discover the villages on foot and also a train ride between villages. You can take a swim in the clear blue water at Vernazza or Monterosso and (weather permitting) a 40 minute boat ride along the Riviera, giving you a totally different perspective of this amazing region. An air-conditioned coach will be waiting to take you back to Florence.

DAY TRIP TO CINQUE TERRE

MILANO... MAGNIFICO !!!

Anyone who has been to Milan will tell you not to miss visiting the Milan Cathedral (Duomo di Milano) which was described by Mark Twain as ‘a poem in marble’. You won’t be able to miss it as all roads virtually lead to this Gothic masterpiece which took nearly six centuries (1386 to 1813) to complete and is the fifth largest cathedral in the world (and the largest in Italy). There is a lift outside which takes you up to the Duomo rooftops where, on a clear day, you can see the Alps. Another way to see Milan is to hop on one of the red open top tourist buses for a guided tour of downtown. Milan is one of the world’s fashion capitals, and home to both Leonardo’s Last Supper and the world’s premier opera house, La Scala. This commercial hub also boasts art galleries, excellent restaurants, hotels and designer shops. Milan is currently undergoing upgrades to prepare to host the EXPO World Fair in 2015. We stayed at a luxury serviced apartment in downtown Milan and were thrilled to be upgraded to their best suite, with the main bedroom window directly facing the magnificent Duomo... spectacular !!!

GLAMOUR APARTMENTS Passaggio Duomo, 2, Piazza del Duomo, Milano www.glamour-apartments.com www.booking.com

LAKE COMO... SPLENDIDO !!! The northern Italian resort town of Como sits at the tip of Lake Como in Lombardy. Ringed with palatial villas, manicured gardens and snow-capped Alps, Lake Como is one of the most popular day-trip destinations from Milan. Wander through the town’s arcaded streets and very stylish shops, and relax under the trees in the lake-front gardens before taking a cruise on the lake. Other scenic towns dotted around the 146 square kilometre lake include Bellagio, Bellano, Menaggio and Lecco. Take a ferry ride on the lake to Bellagio, which is the prettiest of these towns, and have lunch at one of the outdoor restaurants overlooking the lake. After lunch you can catch a ferry back to Como, or take a local bus. The bus ride gives you a different perspective and there are some amazing views as the bus winds its way around the glacial lake to the train station for your return trip to Milan. Our tip: Catch the first train in the morning and the last train back to Milan because once you get to Lake Como, just like George and Madonna, you won’t want to leave! Trains depart from Milano Centrale and it takes around one hour to arrive at the Como Lago station.

Little Venice... Mykonos

Even though Mykonos has a reputation for being the ‘party island’, we stayed at this beautiful resort and went to Little Venice and dined in the restaurants, drank at the bars, walked the shopping streets at night... and everything was idyllic and very romantic. Mykonos and Santorini are both ideal for destination weddings and honeymoons and each island offers something unique.

Sensational Santorini

A great way to ‘island hop’ from Mykonos to Santorini is to catch the hydrofoil and sit back in air-conditioned comfort while you are transported from one island paradise to the next. When you arrive at the port on Santorini, there will be buses, taxis and chauffeurs holding signs up everywhere. We chose to stay at OIA which is known as the best place on Santorini to see the sun setting over the Mediterranean. Caldera Villas offer traditional cliff house accommodation and are centrally located below the main street which runs through Oia. They do have a ‘plunge pool’ which is really small but is great if you don’t want to do laps, especially as many of the cliffside villas don’t have pools... and it is a long way down the steep hill to the sea.

There are so many restaurants dotted around the town of Oia and many have spectacular views over the volcano and the ocean. The sunsets are truly spectacular and people flock from everywhere on the island to experience at least one ‘Oia sunset’ during their stay. If you are lucky enough to stay at Oia, you will be spoilt with a sunset every day and you can walk to see it. While on Santorini, you have to experience a donkey ride. The donkeys are quite large (more like horses) and very well looked after. A highlight of staying at Caldera Villas is the donkeys walk right past the pool on their way down to the port to collect tourists. They can also take you to the restaurants along the water’s edge where you can eat delicious local seafood with the Mediterranean virtually lapping at your feet. If you don’t want to take a donkey ride back up the steep hill, there are taxis available, but it is definitely an experience you won’t forget... hold on tight and enjoy the ride!

A definite must-do is a sunset sailing trip out to the volcano on a catamaran. The boat stops for everyone to swim to a couple of beaches along the majestic cliffs of Santorini and then enjoy a BBQ cooked on the boat by the staff (and washed down with Ouzo) before setting sail towards the volcano for an amazing sunset.

ONLINE

Caldera Villas will give you an authentic Santorini experience... this is the view from these quaint cliff house dwellings, a few steps down the cliff from the restaurants and busy shopping streets of Oia.
