MADELEINE THORNTON AND JESSE STIRLING MET IN 2015. “I HAD TRAVELLED TO BUNDABERG FROM SYDNEY WITH FRIENDS FOR A CAMPING TRIP. JESSE WAS THERE WITH SOME MUTUAL FRIENDS AND I NOTICED HIM RIGHT AWAY. OUR FIRST DATE TOOK PLACE THAT WEEKEND, ON VALENTINE’S DAY NO LESS, AT A BEACH WHERE WE WATCHED BABY TURTLES HATCH AND CRAWL OUT TO SEA.”

“For the most part we had a long-distance relationship. I moved to the UK while Jesse moved to Japan. When we both returned to Australia, we lived in separate states. Throughout this time we wrote letters to each other. Jesse loves to write, and while we lived apart he was secretly working on a novel, an adventurous tale involving pirates, treasure, and two characters that strongly resembled each of us. On my 24th birthday, he gifted the novel to me, which I devoured in three days, and at the end of the book he had crafted the final sentence ‘Will you marry me?’ into the story. We were together as I read those final words, so then he pulled out a ring. It was unbelievable.”

“My amazing mum is an interior designer and channelled her creative passions into designing the most perfect wedding. Our reception was on the Kookaburra Showboat, an old paddle steamer with a vintage feel. It has beautiful interior wood panels which we decided to work with, taking

the

extravagant galas of the 1920-1930’s, like what is depicted in the Great Gatsby and Downton Abbey. We were married in winter, so steered away from summer florals and opted for hardier blooms including beautiful brown

magnolia

leaves

which

complemented the interior tones. We added whimsical golds and light pinks in the table settings to offset the heavy colours. It was all so perfect!”

“The whole day was magical, but we loved the quiet moments of downtime where we could soak in what was happening. We had our ceremony in the morning, the reception in the evening and lunch with our immediate families at Gianni’s Kitchen at Newstead. Our waiter brought out a tablecloth for a makeshift apron to cover my dress and the pizza was great! Taking photos at New Farm Park was a highlight. It was a perfect Brisbane winter’s day, blue skies and 22 degrees. The park was bustling with families and as we walked along the water past them, they all started clapping and cheering. It was a ‘Mexican wave of congratulations’ and we felt like royalty. We loved having our reception on the showboat and our friends still tell us it was the best wedding they’ve been to. The food was delicious and ready as soon as our guests arrived, and since the boat travels up and down the Brisbane river, it was a perfect way for interstate visitors to experience the city.”

“Our advice for other couples planning their wedding is to focus on where you’ll get most bang for your buck. Think about what you will remember when you look back at your photos. Other than that, don’t stress about getting everything perfect. Once I had locked in a venue and found a dress, the rest of the details fell into place. Friends and family can help with making desserts or doing your hair if you can’t afford all the extra costs. Ultimately, the most important thing is to enjoy the time with your fiancé, thinking about your future. Don’t get so swept up in the buzz of planning a wedding that you forget to plan your marriage.” “We went to Hamilton Island for our honeymoon. Neither of us had been there so it was a real treat. Our favourite part was driving the golf buggies up and down the island and enjoying the ultra dark chocolate gelato.”

“The proposal was absolutely perfect. Jake surprised me after work. He picked me up and took me over to Magnetic Island. A yacht was waiting for us at the beach with wine, music and a platter all set up. After sitting down and talking for a while, Jake asked if we could take some photos at the front of the boat. He asked to do the ‘Titanic pose’ and I genuinely thought he was being so lame, but after we took the photo I turned around to see him on one knee and he proposed.”

“The wedding theme was Modern Boho. Jake’s best man delivered the greatest wedding speech I’ve ever heard. Having burgers and fries was the best idea for wedding food and we had literally all of our favourite people in the room. It was such a special night.”

“Michael attempted to propose on our babymoon - a little romantic getaway. He had arranged a walk up to the summit of Bunya Mountains where he had planned to propose. Unfortunately I ruined his plans as I was heavily pregnant and the only thing on my mind was a chocolate cake and an orange juice at the little cafe alongside the bush walk entry. A 2-hour hike was not on my list of things I wanted to do! Michael did not give up and attempted to find the right moment, but things were not working out for him. It wasn’t until we had packed and left the cottage driving home when Michael pulled over. He got me out of the car, got down on one knee and said, ‘Will you marry me?’. It was a complete surprise, with a beautiful scenic view and no one in sight. I said ‘Yes!’ and that was that!”

“Planning your own wedding is stressful at the best of times. Add COVID-19 into the mix and I think you’re ready to give up on the idea of getting married in 2020. However, I don’t think we could have achieved such a perfect day without Victoria our Wedding Coordinator, Chelsea our Celebrant and Rosie our amazing Photographer! Chelsea was so delightful and created the perfect personalised ceremony for us. Without Rosie, I don’t think I could have gotten through the day! She helped me keep my cool and knew to capture

AFTER A FEW YEARS, I MOVED BACK TO BRISBANE AFTER COMPLETING MY RURAL TEACHING SERVICE AND THEN CHRIS QUICKLY SENT ME A MESSAGE ASKING ME TO GO ON A DATE. I ACTUALLY FORGOT HE MESSAGED ME AND HE BRAVELY MESSAGED ME AGAIN! I EVENTUALLY AGREED AND THE REST IS HISTORY.

“The proposal happened on a family holiday in Banff, Canada. The day after Christmas, we went to Lake Louise for a day trip. To be honest, I knew it was going to happen the whole time, Chris sucks at surprises! In true Australian style, we hear the word ‘lake’ and think a picnic lunch would be perfect, but not in Canada in the middle of winter when it’s -16 degrees. So, I had a backpack with wine and cheese and we decided to go for a walk along the edge of the lake (in knee-deep snow). We couldn’t find a table and chairs so we cleared the snow off what we thought was a tree stump and decided to warm ourselves up with wine and cheese. The problem was, we’re used to cheap, twist-top wine, this happened to be a fancy bottle with a cork…, and we were fresh out of corkscrews. By this point, I was colder than freezing and disappointed about the lack of wine. Then Chris unexpectedly asked me for my Pandora bracelet and said he had some charms that he didn’t give me yesterday (for Christmas). When he turned around, he had my engagement ring on the bracelet and began to get down on one knee, except he sunk almost up to his neck in snow and almost rolled down a 3-meter embankment. After he regained composure, he asked me to marry him, I wiped my tears away (which felt weird in -16 degree temperate) and said ‘yes’ without a second thought. We then ran back to the Fairmont, lied about being guests to the concierge and defrosted over a hot chocolate – name a more perfect engagement!

“We didn’t really have a theme in mind. I was heavily influenced by the floristry and wanted the gorgeous arrangements by Nadja from Le Sans Souci to be the WOW factor. The florals were complemented by hues of dusty pink, forest green and pickups of gold. Mum did a beautiful job of our deconstructed 3 tier cake with edible flowers. The groomsmen arrived in my dad’s vintage Ford Cobra. Apart from getting to marry my best friend, other highlights were the fireworks, the food and having all of our favourite people in one place! I think the one piece of advice we would pass on is to make the wedding about you! It is your big day so don’t be afraid to put your foot down sometimes. We had a mini-moon in the Barossa Valley, it was so much fun!”

“It was late afternoon when we arrived at Shorncliffe Pier. The sun began to set and I thought the day could not have been more perfect. With COVID-19 causing everything to close and being unsure of how bad things were going to get, it made me so much more certain of what I was about to do. We walked to the end of the pier and I could see the beautiful setting arranged by Memorable Memories. Bri was completely unaware of what was happening. She went to walk past and I had to stop her and pull her back. I said, ‘This is for us’ and she replied, ‘What?’. Confused and unaware, I began with: ‘I know there are a lot of things going on in the world that I am unsure about and what’s going to happen but what I do know is that I have never been more sure about spending the rest of my life with you’. Then I got down on one knee and asked the woman of my dreams to ‘Marry Me’. Kate Bonanno and Steph Charge met in 2013 through a mutual friend. “Steph had just turned 18 and was still figuring herself out. I had moved out of home two years before to find a more accepting place in the world and was still looking. When I met Steph, I knew I had met the girl that I wanted to marry but it took her a little bit longer to cotton on. For a little while we settled on being friends, or so she thought. On one of our early ‘friend dates’, I picked her up and we went to a theme park at night. I hated both heights and the dark, so this was my idea of hell, but I knew Steph wanted to go so badly. “After a few years of hounding Steph with the question, ‘Will you marry me?’, she finally said ‘yes’ one night... sort of! I had planned to take her up to a restaurant at the lookout that we loved and to propose on the grassy area where we had spent so many nights sitting and looking at the beautiful city that we live in together. When the moment finally came, I chickened out. I had asked her playfully at least 100 times, knowing that she wouldn’t think it meant anything. But this time it did. I had the ring in my pocket and had been checking on it all night to make sure it was still there. At this point she already knew my plan, and on the way home turned to me and asked, ‘So will you marry me?’.”

“Planning our wedding didn’t take much after we’d found the venue. Steph fell in love with Hillstone the second she walked in. “I met Annette at work in 2013 and was amazed how a beautiful, fun-loving lady like her hadn’t been snatched up and married already. In early 2014, I worked up the courage to ask her out. Many adventures later, I proposed to Annette on the cliffs at the Gorge Walk at Point Lookout on North Stradbroke Island during our yearly family Christmas trip. How could so many businesses during this economic crisis give so much and do something so incredibly kind and generous? After a few more conversations with Alysia, we realised our dreams were actually coming true. Alysia had appointments scheduled for me to get fitted for my awesome suit at Black Jacket Suiting. Ryan was a champion and made the whole process so easy. Then we met up with Jac from Moore Celebrations to go over the formalities. Jac is the best celebrant, so easy to get along with, funny and full of great ideas. She sent us a survey to fill out to get to know us, which was a great idea. Annette and I both had funny things to say about each other but little did we know Jac planned to share this information with everyone at the ceremony, which was hilarious. We then had our cake tasting session with The Sweet Society Co. Diane was so lovely and her cakes are to die for. Annette had her first appointment with Trevor at House of Zion. She couldn’t speak highly enough of him and he did a fantastic job. The day before the wedding, Annette checked into Stamford Plaza Hotel and was greeted by the General Manager before meeting with Liz and Emma from the team. The service was second to none and the room was sensational, with drinks and amazing masterpiece desserts created by the hotel’s pastry chefs. The room had the best views of Brisbane River, the city and Story Bridge.”

“Our big day snuck up quickly and while Annette was getting her make-up done by Carly Stone, our incredible photographer Liz from Soda Photography and our videographer, Luna Sity Media captured the highlights of her getting ready. Annette was also spoilt by Scrumdiddlyumptious with their amazing platters. Nerves started to rise as I stood at the end of the aisle with Jac in the stunning riverside open chapel which was custom built for us by HoneyTub Wedding Hire. It was set up perfectly with the end of the aisle pointing straight at the Story Bridge for a perfect backdrop. It looked incredible! Jennine, our florist from Flora Bella pinned my buttonhole on and told me Annette was looking amazing and was just about to come down. Sienna started strumming her guitar and everyone turned to see my soon to be beautiful wife walking up the steps with her son Malik who would walk her down the aisle. It was breathtaking. Jac cracked a few jokes about Annette and my bad habits to lighten the mood, then we said our vows and our I Do’s. Stamford Plaza served pre-reception drinks and canapes to our guests while we had photos taken. The food looked awesome and the jelly shots were a hit. Annette and I were then chauffeured to our reception venue, BlackBird Bar & Grill in a luxury car called Dianna from Our Wedding Cars. We really did feel like royalty driving around the city. Alysia and Penny from Blackbird escorted us into the reception room and we were speechless. The amount of work that was put into the room was unbelievable. So much detail from the name tags by Joyce May Designs, the flatware by Ivy and Bleu Events, the candles from U Light Me Up Candles through to the floral arrangements by John Emmanuel Floral Events. The table looked breathtaking and we felt we had just walked into a fairytale. We looked over the room while Siena played the guitar and sang ‘Can’t Help Falling In Love’.”

“Our guests were then invited in to join us and watching their faces light up like ours did as they saw how great everything looked was priceless. It was the perfect setting, with the Story Bridge and Customs House lit up in the background. We then cut our gorgeous cake by The Sweet Society Co. So much attention to detail! As we were about to cut the cake, Alysia had another surprise for us. She counted down for the fireworks from Skylight Fireworks to light up behind us. It was spectacular. BlackBirds outdid themselves with the menu. Everyone agreed the food and service were 5-star. It meant a lot that we could have our wedding there as we had one of our first dates at Blackbirds. Our guests were all given delicious parting gifts of cakes from The Mason Baker and little handmade chocolates from Co Couture. We can’t express enough our gratitude and appreciation for Alysia Bridger Events and all of her amazing suppliers for their generosity and expertise during this time. “WE FACED MANY CHALLENGES ON OUR WEDDING DAY DUE TO COVID RESTRICTIONS. MATHILDE’S FAMILY COULD NOT TRAVEL FROM FRANCE FOR THE WEDDING. A FRIEND OF OURS ENDED UP ‘FACETIMING’ MATHILDE’S MUM DURING THE CEREMONY SO SHE COULD STILL BE A PART OF OUR DAY.”

Natasha Guymer met Mathilde Favier online. “Natasha proposed during our holiday at Bali. She organised the holiday as a surprise for my 30th birthday with my sister and brother-in-law. It was our last night in Bali, the 23rd of March 2018 and she had booked a romantic dinner in a private cave at the beach. It was the most beautiful, secluded and romantic place I have ever seen. While waiting for our dinner, Natasha asked me to go for a walk along the beach as a nice little break. As we were coming back to our table, she stopped me, told me how much she loved me and how she couldn’t live without me and then she asked me, ‘Will you marry me?’. The surprise wasn’t finished though… at the same time I answered, ‘Of course!’, fireworks lit up the sky. I will remember that moment forever.”

“The night before our wedding, it was announced that restaurants would be forcibly closed the next day due to COVID retrictions. Our amazing family and friends quickly organised a reception dinner at Mathilde’s sister and brother-in-law’s home. They decorated the space with roses and prepared the food, which was just amazing. The lead up to the wedding was very stressful as the COVID situation changed daily. Even though our wedding day was not what we had originally planned, it ended up being just perfect, celebrating our love with each other and our friends and family. We had to cancel our honeymoon to New Caledonia but luckily we were still able to travel locally so we spent a few days at Montville.”

“Our highlight was knowing that we were married! It was a very stressful week leading up to that day, as we had just postponed our wedding to 2021 and were disappointed that it wasn’t going to be happening on the day. After speaking with family, friends, our celebrant and suppliers, we decided to make the day just about us and get married anyway! When we were sitting on the back of the ute having a beer after the photos, we both agreed that was the best moment because we were now married. Unfortunately we were unable to go anywhere for a honeymoon due to COVID-19 but we will definitely plan a fun trip away once everything has settled. Our advice for couples planning their wedding is don’t listen to anyone else and make the day all about the both of you and what will make you most happy. You’ll never please everyone!”
