LSD Expansion Part of $7 billion “Building a New Chicago” program
Back: State Senator Raoul, Alderman John A. Pope Front:7th Ward Jackson, State Representative Currie and Mayor Emanuel
Sgomez@onwnews.com April 3, 2012 - While visiting the former USX Steel Mill site, now known as Chicago Lakeside, Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced construction of the future expansion of US Route 41, better known as Lake Shore Drive. It is being touted

as the proverbial, shot in the arm, when it comes to economic growth within our neighborhood and is expected to be the start of the transformation of the old steel mill site into a vibrant new community. “This project will be like turning the ignition key to economic development in this neighborhood,” said the Mayor. “This is basically one of the biggest pieces of
property in the city of Chicago, that’s been sitting fallow for a long time.” He also went on to say, “How do we give it rebirth, how do we strengthen it, because we know we have good people here. What was once an eye sore, will become an economic engine. What was once a strain on our infrastructure will now become the strength of our infrastructure.” The roadway project is part of the $7 billion, three year program titled “Building a New Chicago,” which promises to be one of the most comprehensive infrastructure plans in Chicago’s history as well as one of the largest investments in the history of Chicago. The project will involve an unprecedented level of coordination between City Hall, multiple city departments and sister agencies, private sector utilities and the public. The program will touch nearly every aspect of the city’s infrastructure network and create more than 30,000 jobs over the projected three year span. see LSD Extension on page 6
Carpenters of Local 272 Volunteer Installation of ADA Door for Local Veteran By Sam Gomez
Sgomez@onwnews.com
Manuel and Luanna
On the morning of Thursday March 29th, East Side resident and Marine Corps veteran, Luanna Ducker and her son Manuel Ruiz, were surprised to find volunteers from Carpenters Local 272 on their doorstep. The reason for their visit was to install an ADA approved doorway for 15 year old Manuel, the victim of a hit-and-run accident early last year. “I didn’t know any of this was going to happen, it was a surprise this morning,” said Luanna.

News Continued from front page Through Frank Libby, President of Chicago Regional Council of Carpenters (CRCC), volunteers from Local 272, Mark Davern and Mike Tragnitz, who is also a veteran, spent the morning widening an outside doorway to accommodate Manuel’s wheelchair. In a flash, on the evening of March 5, 2011, Manuel went from being a vibrant, athletic, teenager, to spending approximately five months in a coma and a total of eight months in the hospital. “This changed our lives,” said Luanna. However, “At this point I’m more focused on his rehab.” The door and materials were donated by the CCRC and purchased through the Apprentice Training Council. “I am glad to see it is going to work out for Luanna and her son,” said Dan McMahon, 10th Ward resident and representative for the CRCC. Although Manuel’s prognosis is still undetermined, he has made much progress since that night. “He was hit on the left side of his brain. His long term memory is decent but his short term memory isn’t so good,” said Luanna.
Aunt Sally’s
Carpenters Help Vet Despite Manuel’s prognosis and the fact that the crime remains unsolved, Luanna keeps a positive attitude and focuses on Manuel’s progress as opposed to dwelling on what might have been. “He has come a long way,” she said. The smile on Manuel’s face and his progress thus far, is a testament to the family’s perseverance, hard work and belief that he can still have a high quality life. Luanna believes he will continue to get better. “He doesn’t have a choice. I wouldn’t let him remain in the vegetative state he was in.” Although Manuel still has a long, hard road of recovery, the support of his family and friends have been a major factor in his recovery thus far, “We are always working on things,” to improve his quality of life, said Luanna. Thanks to the efforts of organizations such as Carpenters Local 272, Manuel has even more reason to smile. “I just want him to live a normal, happy life…that’s all I’m asking.” Photos provided by Mark Tenner DO YOU HAVE A STORY TO TELL? This is building a new Chicago.” Nasutsa Mabwa, Project Manager of Development for McCaffery Interests said, “This is about the future for Chicago, a 21st century new neighborhood for the city.” The new roadway is expected to be complete by December, with landscaping installed in the spring of 2013 bringing the new Chicago Lakeside development project to the forefront.

The pavement will have permeable parking lanes to provide innovative storm water management. New sidewalks, driveways, curbs, sewers and signage will also be constructed as well as nearly 600 new trees will be planted. The Mayor said, “What was once a steel facility that is shuttered; will now become a place for residential housing and commercial development.” The Mayor went on to say, “Adding two miles will put people to work.” The 360-acre Chicago Lakeside project will reutilize the now vacant USX site and will include more than 8,000 residences, two million square feet of commercial space and several new parks as it moves forward over the next few decades. “Without the extension of these two miles this property would sit like this. The project will consist of building a new road to relocate Route 41 by connecting it at the north end of the USX site at 79th Street and South Shore Drive to the south end at 87th Street and Avenue O. “Extending Lake Shore Drive further south and transforming the former U.S. Steel site will provide an economic boost to the southeast side of Chicago,” Governor Pat Quinn said in a press release. The Mayor agreed with the Governor by saying, “With the Lake Shore Drive expansion, we can now work towards residential and commercial development, taking a community that was literally land locked and almost forgotten and connecting it to the rest of the city as well as connecting the rest of the city to this community.” Not only will the project expand

East Side Hoops Thrilling End
Just imagine for a moment a scenario in a championship basketball game. With only 13 seconds remaining, the team leading by a point has the ball. After the inbounds, there is a scramble for the loose ball and the opposing team gains possession due to a jump ball and possession arrow going their way. Seven seconds remain with the game on the line and the team with possession trailing by a point. The crowd is on their feet cheering, a player on the trailing team brings the ball up the court and passes it to a teammate as he gets off an open shot. He misses the rim completely. A teammate then grabs the rebound and tries to get off a shot, but is unable to as time expires. The crowd erupts with either joy or frustration and the part of the crowd that’s frustrated, screams at the referees,
begging for a foul. The losing team slowly walks back toward their bench with their heads hanging low, as the prevailing team mob each other in the middle of the court; jumping with joy and disbelief of their victory. Picture this scenario for a moment. Now picture these two teams being full of eight and nine year olds. This was the exact scenario that took place this past Sunday, April 1, in the East Side Hoops championship game for the 8-9 years old division at Rowan Park. The Jellyfish stunned the undefeated Blue Gills 25-24 in a nerve-wrecking game that went back and forth until the final horn sounded. That was the second game of the four championship games played that afternoon. In the 5-7 years division, the first place, Green Herons, won their championship game 11-7. They barely escaped a nail-biter to reach the championship game in the semi-finals the
day before. The Mayas, 10-12 years division, like the Blue Gills, also went to the championship game undefeated. They though, handily beat the second place Comanches, 3412. The Mayas completely overmatched them. A huge loss for the Comanches was the absence of Stephen Chico. In the semis the previous day, Chico went up for a rebound in the second quarter and came down on awkwardly. He dropped to the floor in agony but was able to limp off of the floor after a few minutes. Somehow, he was able to muster up the strength to go back in the game after sitting out a play. Chico though, continued limping and was forced to come out of the game. He sat on the bench in crutches during the championship game and watched his team lose. He said the worst part about the injury was that he wasn’t able to be out there playing with his teammates. The 13-15 years division championship
was also a blowout. The first-place Cougars easily defeated the Jaguars, 5327. The Cougars showed an impressive display of offense and great teamwork. They moved the ball inside and out, and were able to create whatever shot they wanted. Possibly their best player, Ritchie Chavez, seemed to have the crowd in awe seconds before the first half ended. He pulled up well behind the three-point line and banked in the long shot. Out of the four games, the Jellyfish were the only team that pulled an unexpected victory. They had already lost three times to the Blue Gills this season. In fact, Wesley Jackson—who coaches the Blue Gills—said that he’s been bringing up this group since they were in the younger division, and that this was their first defeat in three years. Following each game, there was pizza and refreshments for the coaches and teams.

Lady Patriot Softball Start Strong
By Juan and Elizabeth Quintana jquintana@onwnews.com
ONT / Issue 06 / Vol.5
On March 27, 2012 at Rowan Park, the GWHS Freshman/Sophomore softball team took the field for their first home game vs. Agricultural Science in which the GWHS Lady Patriots were victorious 11 to 7 as some of the girls were nervous taking the field. The starting lineup was Isela Maradiaga (shortstop), Jennifer Castaneda (3rd Base), Olivia Cortes (Catcher), Jamese Gray (Right Field), Laura Taylor (Center Field), Amanda Prado (1st Base), Jessica Morales (Left Field), Samantha Castaneda (Pitcher), and Lisette Fernandez (2nd Base). “I anticipate a very good season for the girls this year,” Steve Donley, coach of the 2012 Freshman/Sophomore Girls Softball Team at George Washington High School. “Last year our Freshman/Sophomore team finished 14-3 which earned us the Red South Conference Championship. Entering the City Tournament we were ranked #2, and we unfortunately fell short losing to Lane Tech in the semi-finals.” Cortes who is playing in her second year with the Lady Patriots went 4 for 4 hits and 2 RBIs at her first time at bat this year as well Morales who played her first high
school softball game being a freshman. In their second game of the season where they faced a tough Kennedy High school team, the GWHS girls won 16-15. Once again Cortes went 4 for 5 at bats. Morales went 3 for 5 with a homerun and 4 RBIs. Prado went 3 for 4 and 3 RBIs. Castenada also went 3 for 5 and Fernandez 2 for 5. On Saturday, March 31st the Freshman/ Sophomore team played the Morgan Park Mustangs at Rowan Park. Maradiaga went 3 for 5, as did Taylor; Cortes went 4 for 5 and Morales went 4 for 5 for the day as the Lady Patriots overpowered the Mustangs in a 24 to 10 victory to start their first week undefeated. “We have some good returning talented sophomores in catcher Olivia Cortes, shortstop Isela Maradiaga, outfielder Laura Taylor, and utility player Jocelyn Tirado. We also have a very promising transfer student this year stepping in at first base, Amanda Prado,” said Coach Donley. “The freshmen to join the team this year look like they will be able to provide some much needed pitching with Jennifer Castaneda and Ariday Martinez. We have also added newcomer sophomore pitcher Samantha Castaneda.” The ultimate goal for Head Coach Donley and Assistant Coach Rachel

Yzaguirre every year is to field a team of hard-working and competitive studentathletes. Once on the field, the girls will be expected to play to win and take that next step of making it to and winning the City Championship. So far all the girls are showing signs
that they are geared up to continue on to where they left off last year and hopefully surpass last year’s showing. Come check out the girls at Rowan Park on the various days: April 10, 14, 17, 19, 20, 24, 28. All the games start at 4:30 p.m. during the week and 11:00 a.m. on weekends.
