casino rama resort

DESTINATION for

FUN With its tasty menu of eight restaurants, an impressive star-studded lineup of world-class performers, an all-suite luxury hotel, an opulent spa and a massive gaming floor, Casino Rama is a must-visit entertainment destination that attracts people from all over the world to Ontario’s Lake Country. A-list music fans like Sandi Johnston regularly make trips to Casino Rama. “I go to two or three concerts a month with a group of friends. It’s fantastic entertainment.” She says there’s not a bad seat in the house at the 5,000-seat entertainment centre where KISS, Tony Bennett, Alan Jackson, Styx, The Tragically Hip and other top acts have performed. “We often go for dinner at one of their restaurants before the show, then afterwards, we often hit the slot machines.” The newly renovated 94,200-squarefoot gaming floor is home to more than 2,500 of the latest generation slot machines and more than 110 gaming tables. The entire space has been redesigned to incorporate a central bar and wider aisles, says Jenna Hunter, the casino’s director of public relations.

The casino’s Balance in Life Spa has also been rejuvenated and now can accommodate couples and groups who want to have a manicure, pedicure or other treatments together. “Our customers love the spa,” says Hunter, who said all hotel guests and spa customers receive complimentary use of the salt-water indoor pool, hot tub, eucalyptus steam room, sauna, gym and locker-room facilities. The Balance in Life Spa is the ideal place for a little me-time. “We have an opulent treatment menu that includes everything from manicures and pedicures to therapeutic massage treatments, body polishes, body wraps, facials and seasonallythemed organic treatments,” said Hunter, who noted the spa features Eminence products – a handmade, organic line of products from Hungary.

Happy Trails

Boneshaker, along one of Hardwood Ski & Bike’s mountain biking trails.

Elizabeth Oakley loves a challenge. Though she hadn’t been on a bike since high school, she decided to take up mountain biking last summer and found her happy place: on a bike saddle, traversing the challenging trails at Hardwood Ski and Bike, a world-class four-season adventure centre amid the rolling hills of scenic Oro-Medonte Township in the heart of Ontario’s Lake Country. “When I’m whipping down a hill … it’s just such a feeling of exhilaration,” said Oakley. “Part of the allure is physical – being able to conquer something that scares me – and part of it is just the comfort that comes on the trails; quite frankly, it’s beautiful here. I love riding and watching the seasons change.” Oakley has tried several of the trails at Hardwood Ski and Bike, which boasts more than 34 kilometres of double-track trails and another 50 kilometres of challenging singletrack trails. “We have a trail system 8

that is for every level of rider and every level of skier,” said Hardwood president and general manager, Jack Sasseville. “Our trails are homogeneous, meaning they’re consistent all the way; we have trails for those just starting out and we have a trail used by the world’s top athletes when we hosted the mountain-biking competition for the Pan-American Games.” While known for its world-class events, Hardwood is predominantly home to recreational riders and funloving families; newcomers can rent

skis or mountain bikes to try either activity. “Our mission is to provide a safe, healthy, family-oriented atmosphere where people can enjoy the outdoors,” said Sasseville. “You don’t have to wear Spandex to come to Hardwood.” Hardwood also has more than 40 kilometres of groomed trails for cross-country skiing. The trail network consists of eight different loops ranging from three to 22 kilometres in length that take skiers through hardwood and pine forests. For adventure seekers, nearby Mount St. Louis Moonstone, a popular ski resort, attracts more than 10,000 people to its midsummer Tough Mudder event. Whatever you choose, there are many ways to get active in all four seasons in Ontario’s Lake Country. “In an age when people are not getting enough exercise and not getting outside enough, where parents are often reluctant to send their kids outdoors because

they’re worried it’s too dangerous, we’re a safe haven,” said Sasseville. “It’s an opportunity to go out in the woods, feel safe and get away from … the modern world which is both physically and psychologically very beneficial.” Hardwood Ski and Bike boasts a trail system for every level of rider and every level of skier.

water activities

PADDLIN’ AROUND Pristine, clean water is one of the defining characteristics of Ontario’s Lake Country.

The region’s lakes provide the perfect backdrop for stunning sunsets; their sandy shorelines are beautiful. For those who want to get beyond the beach, boating beckons. You can motor into popular local ports and then head off to adventure through the Trent-Severn Waterway. Another way to experience local lakes is to give paddling a try. There’s nothing quite like the feel of a lake-blown breeze as you pilot a kayak and carve through the refreshing water on a hot summer’s day. “People always come back with a smile on their face after they go paddling,” said Al Knell, who operates A Breath of Fresh Air, Stand-up Paddleboarding on Lake Simcoe

Kayaking on Lake Couchiching

which offers hourly rentals of kayaks and stand-up paddleboards (SUP) from its base at Couchiching Beach Park. Their reasonable rate includes life-jackets, paddles, a safety kit and brief instructions. “It’s a wonderful way to enjoy the water and it’s a great way for someone to experience paddling for the first time.” Dan Courville, who operates Kayakity-yak out of Orillia’s Tudhope Park, agrees. “Kayaking is like hiking but on water,” says Courville. “It’s healthy, it’s not harmful to the environment and it’s peaceful.” At Kayak-ity-yak, you can rent a single or tandem kayak or an SUP for a half day or a full day. Similarly,

Swift Georgian Bay, close to Port Severn, offers sales, rentals and all the gear you need to get out paddling including kayaks, canoes, and SUP. There is on-site test paddling, as well as classes and lessons available. For something a little different, Rosanna Shillolo conducts yoga classes in the water on a paddleboard. The owner of Orillia’s Sunrise Yoga Studio also offers SUP lessons. “Being outdoors on the water is very relaxing,” said Shillolo, noting the boards are anchored in place during her 60-minute yoga classes. “You would be surprised how easy it is. A lot of people have tried it and then bought their own board … people love it.” See for m pg. 5 0 ore i nfo

SNOW You!

Ontario’s Lake Country is the ideal place to revel in an old-fashioned Canadian winter where you can enjoy dog sledding, skiing, snowshoeing in the woods, experience ice fishing or participate in the quintessential winter pastime: snowmobiling. “There are so many different day trips you can do in Ontario’s Lake Country, so much great scenery to see and a lot of little communities to visit,” said Mike Wiancko, an avid sledder and vice-president of the Orillia District Snowmobile Club, which grooms almost 300 kilometres of trails, ensuring sledders experience idyllic driving conditions in a snowy paradise many only witness on a postcard. “Our trails offer a lot of variety, from straight trails along old rail lines, to farmers’ fields and the rolling hills of Oro-Medonte,” he explained. “We make the trails as wide as possible and we have many huge mapboards on the trails to help visitors find their way to wherever they want to go.” 12

Craig Nicholson, the Intrepid Snowmobiler widely regarded as the authority on the sport, loves hitting the trails in Ontario’s Lake Country. “Orillia is the best staging destination close to the GTA … you can come for three or four days and not ride the same trail twice,” he said. “In addition, Orillia is a full-service town. Gas, hotels and restaurants are all accessible via trails; the trail goes right through town.” Many local hotels and resorts, such as Knights Inn Lagoon Harbour Resort and Hotel, Casino Rama and Bayview-Wildwood Resort offer special packages tailored to snowmobilers and while in the area you can also ski or rent an ice fishing hut. “You can rent a fish hut for a full day or half day – all the equipment is provided – and catch some perch or pike on Lake Couchiching,” said Al Knell of A Breath of Fresh Air Outdoor Sports. “More serious fishermen can head out to Lake Simcoe … Ontario’s Lake Country is a perfect spot for winter activities.”

MUSIC DESTINATION

Whatever type of music composes your playlist – from hip-hop to country, from classic rock to folk music, from pop to big-band – when you visit Ontario’s Lake Country, you will have the opportunity to hear the world’s best, in every genre, live, up-close and personal. The newest special event and concert venue in Ontario’s Lake Country is Burl’s Creek, a vast outdoor site of almost 600 acres. Two major music festivals – Boots and Hearts and WayHome – debuted at Burl’s Creek last summer and both received rave reviews from the more than 75,000 fans that revelled in the music and unique camping vibe at the sprawling Oro-Medonte Township facility. Ryan Howes, vice-president of venue operations and business 38

development at Burl’s Creek, said the inaugural WayHome festival was a big hit; its dynamic lineup drew 30,000 people. “It was a beautiful festival with virtually no problems,” he said. “What was incredible was 97% of people who came to WayHome camped … it’s pretty extraordinary and what that indicates is there’s a market for this,” said Howes. While WayHome set a high benchmark, the Boots and Hearts Festival moved the bar higher; it was a sell-out,

attracting 40,000 fans, 90% of whom camped. While the festivals bring big-name stars to Ontario’s Lake Country, Burl’s Creek has also hit a winning note with local residents and artists through its OK Friday Farmers’ Market. The market has had arts and crafts programming and a music component from Day 1, but with the assistance of Chas. Hay of Inside the Music, the market now features a vocal act as a way to help promote the local music community. Howes said both Boots and Hearts and WayHome will be back in 2016.

In addition, he hinted, “a couple of large bands are going to be touring and we are looking at some of them to maybe come here for a single show … We’re working on it.” Jenna Hunter of Casino Rama, where big-name acts perform each week, said “Ontario’s Lake Country is quickly becoming Ontario’s hottest music destination. Fans can enjoy year-round big name concerts in our entertainment centre … and in the same weekend they can head outdoors and enjoy the many sights and sounds from local festivals and events like the Mariposa Folk Festival and the Boots and Hearts Festival.”

DISCOVER… CONNECT… EXPERIENCE

Orillia Museum of Art and History

“Shhh. You’re in a museum! Just quietly appreciate what’s beneath the glass and don’t touch anything!” Those are words you’re not likely to hear at the Orillia Museum of Art and History (OMAH) where visitors are encouraged to participate in an interactive experience and enjoy hands-on activities amid a diverse collection of more than 10,000 works of art and historical artifacts. “Gone are the days that museums are considered dusty, quiet places,” says Ninette Gyorody, the museum’s executive director. “Now, museums like OMAH are vibrant cultural centres where visitors are both educated and engaged.”

40

In recent years, OMAH has been rejuvenated and expanded; the historic landmark building – constructed in 1894 and featuring a beautiful four-sided clock tower – is now home to three floors of inviting exhibition space. www.OntariosLakeCountry.com • 1-866-329-5959

Taking in local art

An exhibition opening at OMAH

“This is a community museum, so if you come here, expect to find out something about Orillia and area. We have a little bit of everything for everyone here as we try to bring together art and history.” Late last year, the museum opened its Franklin Carmichael Gallery; its namesake, the famed Group of Seven painter who was born in Orillia, in addition to local artists Arthur Shilling, Marta Brestovansky and others were featured in a way that allowed visitors to see first-hand how interactive the museum is and how technologically engaged it is. “I think people coming here will see a smalltown museum, but I think they will also be blown away by the amount of time they can spend here – especially now that we have activated our third-floor space,” said Gyorody. “It’s a fun place to visit.”

As is the Peter Street Arts District, home to cultural events like the Starry Night Studio and Gallery Tour and populated by quaint shops in addition to a collection of vibrant art galleries and studios; the heart of the thriving neighbourhood is OMAH. “We are a cultural hub and have a strong presence in the community as an identifiable landmark – a great place to connect for programming, talks, tours, events and diverse exhibitions,” said Gyorody. It’s not surprising; arts and culture have always helped to define Ontario’s Lake Country – the region is renowned as the birthplace of legendary folk singer Gordon Lightfoot, sculptor Elizabeth Wynn Wood and was the summer home of Stephen Leacock whose Brewery Bay homestead is now a national historic site.

Weber’s Key Man, Mike McParland

On a July day in 1963, Weber’s opened on Highway 11, a few miles north of Orillia. On that afternoon, with just five employees and a handful of picnic tables, Paul Weber Sr.’s bold new venture attracted few patrons, recalls employee Mike McParland, who was operating the grill that day. Fast-forward 52 summers and McParland is still flipping burgers; he remains a fixture at the iconic eatery that has become a landmark where generations of patrons have queued up in long lines, soaking in the aroma of charcoal-fired grills to enjoy tasty burgers, hot dogs and fries. “It took four or five years, but then we started to get a bit of a lineup and it’s gotten busier and more popular every year,” said McParland, nicknamed the Key Man for his important role as the glue that has helped hold things together at Weber’s. It hasn’t always been smooth sailing. When the province decreed a divided highway in 1981, it almost sounded the end point for Weber’s as south-bound drivers had to risk their lives to scramble over or under the new box-beam barrier for their fix. Paul Weber Jr. convinced his dad to buy the footbridge that once transported people to the CN Tower. It was a $250,000 investment – not an easy sell. 42

But the decision has paid off in spades; business skyrocketed 60% the following summer. The rest, as they say, is history. In recent years, Tom Rennie, who bought the landmark in 2004, purchased land on the south side of the highway, creating a large parking lot and developing a second grassy picnic area where weary travellers can take their dogs for a walk, enjoy their Weber’s fare and prepare for the rest of their journey. “We have never advertised,” said McParland with a proud smile. “People hear about us from their friends … and they want to have that Weber’s experience and that’s what it is when you come here: a unique experience.” That experience includes refurbished VIA train cars that provide indoor eating areas and bathrooms, 60 picnic tables in a park-like setting and, of course, tasty food – often prepared by the Key Man, who estimates he has served up more than 100,000 burgers in his 52 years of service. “This has been a big part of my life and I know it’s a big part of many people’s lives … it’s a landmark.”

The Downing family purchased Fern Resort, which includes 1.5 miles of spectacular shoreline, in 1918. Mark Downing and his sister, Laura Downing, who both grew up at Fern, represent the fourth generation to operate the resort which has welcomed generations of guests – many of whom return year after year. They return because they love the natural beauty, the amazing amenities, the fantastic food and the feeling of home unique to Fern Resort, said Mark.

“There is no other property of our size in Ontario with the extensive level of facilities and range of amenities that still offers an all-inclusive northern Ontario resort experience,” said Mark. “People come year after year because of the culture we, along with our guests, have created here.”

44

The foundation of that culture is the experience of enjoying three daily meals in the resort’s comfortable dining room. The resort’s menu is tasty: from their signature buns made from the same recipe Downing’s great-grandfather pioneered to their range of delectable menu items, guests salivate over the food.

“During meals, guests come together and talk about the great experience they’ve had,” said Mark, explaining how kids from different families play soccer together or go zip-lining while their parents golf, fish or play shuffleboard or bocce ball. “There’s a real sense of community that’s built and that’s what we’re all about.” Even though guests spend much of their time outdoors, enjoying the amenities, much care has been taken to ensure the lodging is first-rate. Whether it’s a one-, two- or three-room unit in a cottage or hotel-like structure, each offers breathtaking lake vistas but each also has its own flavour. The dining experience, coupled with its idyllic location and amenities allows guests to enjoy a “fantastic vacation” at Fern Resort, said Downing.
