2019-20 SEASON PREVIEW An influx of new talent and the return of a talented goaltender give the Brock women’s hockey team hope to return to the OUA playoffs for a third consecutive season. “It’s always an exciting time when the season begins, because you want to see where you are at and where you think you can go,” said head coach Margot Page. “Playoffs are always something we want to be a part of, and this year is no different.” The Badgers ran into the eventual national champion Guelph Gryphons in the first round last year. Goaltender Jensen Murphy returns for her fifth and final season. The senior netminder was named an OUA all star alongside teammate Annie Berg, who begins her fourth season, following the conclusion of the 2018-19 campaign. Murphy led the OUA with a total of 807 saves, which ranked second in U SPORTS. She finished third in the province with a .944 save percentage, which was also good for third among all Canadian university goalies with 20 or more starts. Murphy also helped Brock secure a spot in the postseason thanks to her league-high 13 wins. Berg led Brock in scoring and was third in the OUA with 11 goals and 25 points in 24 games. She was also 10th in the country among leading scorers. The team has yet to name a captain following the graduation of defenceman Breanna Murphy. Amanda Ieradi will lace up for her final season. She finished second on the team in scoring with eight goals and 17 points in 24 games. “The newcomers are solid,” said Page. “They are like sponges right now and are getting amazing leadership from our more veteran players. They are fitting into our lineup well and are the reason behind our balance and depth.”

2019-20 SEASON PREVIEW Coming off of their first national title in program history, the Guelph Gryphons women’s hockey team will feature some new faces in new roles for the 2019-20 season. Fourthyear goalie Aurore Beaulieu is set to take over the starting role in between the pipes following the graduation of former U SPORTS Player of the Year Valerie Lamenta. Beaulieu, a biological science major from Calgary, has impressed when called upon through her first three seasons at Guelph, including a standout 2018-19 regular season where she posted an 8-0 record in eight starts to go along with 1.48 goals against average. “We’re not going into this season with a focus on trying to repeat last year” said head coach Rachel Flanagan. “We’re instead trying to focus on pursuing a title like everyone else in the conference. We have 11 players in their fourth or fifth years as well as 13 players who are either freshmen or sophomores, so we feel like we have a nice combination or youth and experience.” Up front, the Gryphons once again feature some of the best depth in the conference, with fifth-year seniors Miranda Lantz and Karli Shell leading the way for a Gryphon squad that led the OUA in scoring a season ago with 79 goals in 24 games. “Our leadership is strong and we’re excited to watch several of our players who have been waiting for their opportunity the past few years and now have it right in front of them.”

2019-20 SEASON PREVIEW The Voyageurs are looking to get back into the postseason for the first time since 2016-17 after a 10th place finish a year ago. Despite high hopes for a strong Laurentian team, their nine-game winless streak proved to be too much of a hole to climb out of, especially given the parity within the league. With 18 returning players, experience will be an asset for this year’s squad. Head coach Stacey Colarossi will be putting extra emphasis on getting points every time out on the ice, and is excited to pair a core of experienced veterans with a promising group of new recruits. “We’re looking forward to the year ahead as we believe we have a cohesive group who likes to compete for 60 minutes” said Colarossi. “We are pleased with our first year additions and look forward to getting back to the post-season.” Colarossi returns for her seventh season behind the bench for the Voyagers fresh off coaching Team Canada and a pair of Voyageurs to a silver medal at the 2019 FISU Winter Universiade in Krasnoyarsk, Russia. Returning forward Morgan McCann and the recently graduated Taylor Weber made the most of their opportunity in the international tournament, with McCann leading the Canadians with six goals. Laurentian will enter 2019-20 without their captain and two of their top three scorers from last season, but are confident that they have the right players in place to fill the void. Colarossi’s staff has brough in six freshmen to compliment the already talented group. Fourth-years Annie Sheridan and Regan Toltesi will be players to watch After posting a .910 save percentage in 13 starts last season, Shanna Dolighan is likely to serve as the starting netminder, but expect Danielle Toland and freshman Mikayla Lekun to compete for time between the pipes as the year progresses.

2019-20 SEASON PREVIEW The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks women’s hockey team are coming off a difficult season that saw them finish the year with a 5-1-1-17 (W-OTW-OTL-L) record, missing the playoffs for a third straight season. The 2019-20 campaign marks the first full recruiting class year for head coach Kelly Paton. Paton stepped behind the Golden Hawks bench last season and has been working to build and implement a new culture and style of play to the purple and gold. “We are excited about the upcoming season and the opportunity to support the development of out student-athletes” says Paton. This season sees an even spread of experience across the Golden Hawks roster with eight first years, eight players in second or third year along with a solid group of veterans with six fourth years. Among the freshmen skaters are key recruits from Paton’s first recruit class: winger Kenedy Choma (Oakville, Ont.), defender Emily Lange (Trenton, Ont.) and goalkeeper Victoria Kelaiditis (Picketing, Ont.). Look for Choma to be a focal point in the Laurier offense while Lange adds a new element to the blue line. Among returning players is last season’s team MVP, Cohen Myers (Shakespeare, Ont.) who is key between the pipes for the purple and gold as well as last season’s team rookie of the year, Claire O’Donoghue (Brooklin, Ont.). The Golden Hawks are determined to return to post season play in 2020 and are ready to put in the work on and off the ice to do so.

2019-20 SEASON PREVIEW While the Nipissing Lakers continued their consecutive playoff appearance streak, they did graduate a number of players and will have a slightly new look heading into 201920. “With a solid set of returning players and a lot excellent new additions, our team has what it takes to produce positive results this year” says Laker captain Jetta Derenoski. “We are strong all over the ice and are excited about the upcoming season.” The Lakers have 12 new members in the program, but all come with a very impressive pedigree. Head coach The team has added key pieces at each position and brought on some firepower from a number of different top club teams, including some right here in North Bay. Most, if not all, of the newcomers have also played for their province throughout their career and even though they have had extremely talented and quality recruiting classes in the past, from top to bottom, this year may be the best yet. What they lack in experience, they more than make up in skill and ability and will no doubt be back in the post-season, pushing for their first OUA title.

2019-20 SEASON PREVIEW Despite losing OUA all-star Kassidy Nauboris and her linemate Chelsea Ball to graduation, the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks coaching staff worked hard in the offseason to find ways to fill those voids in the lineup. “I can’t wait for things to begin” said head coach Justin Caruana. “We have a young group with a solid core who wants to learn and wants to get better every day. As a coach that’s all you can ask for. We’re excited to put our energetic brand of hockey on the ice.” With a talented group of recruits joining the ranks this fall, coupled with strong returning athletes, including the goaltending core, Caruana and his staff are expecting big things from the roster and hope to make a push to return the Ridgebacks to the postseason. Megan Johnston echoed Caruana’s excitement for the 2019-20 campaign. “We are super excited for a big year ahead with the new recruits and core group returning.”

2019-20 SEASON PREVIEW Queen’s will look to build on a strong 2018-19 season that saw the 14-9-1-0 Gaels earn a playoff berth as a fifth seed. The Gaels were eliminated in their first-round matchup by the Ryerson Rams in an extremely tight three-game series that featured two overtime games. After winning game one at home, the Rams edged the Gaels in double-overtime in game two and won the series with another overtime victory in game three to eliminate Queen’s at the Memorial Centre. This season will be a transitional year for head coach Matt Holmberg as five key veteran players graduated this past offseason. Katrina Manoukarakis played a key role for the Gaels leading the team in goals with 11 and earned OUA MVP honours in 2017. Fellow forwards Caroline DeBruin and Addi Halladay, who scored eight and seven goals respectively also departed Queen’s after following their fifth season in 2018-19. Fourth-year forward Hailey Wilson is poised to lead the Gaels offence this season. Wilson scored seven goals and added five assists for 12 points, the third-highest total on the team last season. Wilson also showcased her goal-scoring prowess in key moments scoring two game-winning goals. Taylor Hicks will also play a key role as a playmaker following her nine assist season in 2018-19 and veteran Kaylie Dennis will be looked upon as a leader having participated in two U SPORTS championships in her four-year career. Experienced defenceman Nicole Posesorski and Devon Greenough will be relied upon to anchor the Gaels blueline. Last season, the Gaels were third in the conference allowing only 43 goals and posted a goals-against-average of 1.80. Mackenzy Arsenault will look to continue to build on an excellent 2018-19 season between the pipes, in particular, following the departure of goaltender Stephanie Pascal. Pascal had a 7-4 record in 2018-19 and previously won Goaltender of the Year honours in 2017-18. Last season, Arsenault had a breakout season posting an 8-5 record and had the second-lowest GAA (1.39) in the OUA. Head Coach Matt Holmberg returns for his 11th season behind the bench for the Queen’s Gaels. Holmberg earned OUA Coach of the Year honours in 2017 as the Gaels posted a 15-4-3 record good enough for third place in the OUA.

2019-20 SEASON PREVIEW Coming off their most successful season in program history, the Ryerson Rams enter the 2019-20 season with the confidence they need to win their first ever OUA championship. The 2018-19 season saw the team put up record-setting offensive numbers which led them to a playoff berth for the second straight year. The Rams won their first playoff series in team history by knocking off Queen’s in the quarter-finals before running into the eventual OUA and U SPORTS champion Guelph Gryphons in the semifinals. Having that taste of playoff success has left the team wanting more and with just one player graduating from last year’s roster, the Rams have only added more talent and depth to an already dangerous lineup. Last year’s OUA and U SPORTS rookie of the year Erika Crouse returns for her second season while captain Kryshanda Green is back for her fifth and final year. Other weapons in Brooklyn Gemmill and Lauren Nicholson also return to shape a potent offence. First year forwards Mia Morano, Emily Baxter, and Alexia Ursua will look to contribute early and often as well. The Rams will have a battle between the pipes once again this year as Rachel Seeley, Fanny Vigeant, and Natalie Thompson all return to the squad. Each saw action last season and will compete for playing time. A nine-game exhibition schedule will have the Rams prepared for opening night on October 18 as the team sets out in search of their first program title.

2019-20 SEASON PREVIEW The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women’s hockey team boasts 10 new players on their 2019-20 roster. The Blues are the reigning OUA silver medalists and are coming off a sixth-place finish at the U SPORTS national championship last March in Charlottetown. “We have a good group of returning veterans to lead a big group of first-year players this season,” said Varsity Blues head coach Vicky Sunohara. “We have had a great training camp and shown fairly well in our exhibition games so far. I’m excited to see how we will do once the regular season gets underway.” 2018-19 U SPORTS all-Canadian Cristine Chao returns her for fifth and final season in the Blue and White. Chao was named the OUA defender of the year and the OUA’s most sportsmanlike player last season. She is joined by returning veterans Gabrielle De Serres, Jana Headrick and Shaelynn Waite. Up front, the Blues will look to Stephanie Ayres, Mathilde De Serres and Taylor Trussler to lead the offensive charge. The trio combined for 51 points over the 2018-19 regular season and playoffs. Between the pipes, the Blues return sophomore standout Erica Fryer and third-year star Madeline Albert. The duo were both named members of the OUA all-rookie team over the past two seasons.

2019-20 SEASON PREVIEW The Warriors women’s hockey team is looking to make a leap this after being ousted from the first round of playoffs in each of the last two seasons. Head coach Shaun Reagan returns for his ninth year after leading Waterloo to the post-season five of the last six seasons. Last year the Warriors finished with a 12-8-4 record but met up with a hot Western Mustangs team who edged the Warriors 3-2 and 2-1 to put an abrupt end to Waterloo’s 2018-19 campaign. This season the Warriors welcome back some key veterans to the squad including fourth years Samantha Burbridge, Brooklyn Sarnovsky, and Cynthia Cavanagh while fifth years Hannah Street, Alison Hanson and Taytum Clairmont hope to push Waterloo past the second round of the playoffs for the first time since 2017. “As a coaching staff we are very optimistic about the season ahead” said head coach Shaun Reagan. “We have a strong group of veterans returning with a very impressive group of recruits to compliment them. We have a very deep roster this season and I expect to compete with the best teams across the OUA on a game by game basis.” The Warriors are also excited about transfer student Krystin Lawrence who joins Waterloo after spending three full seasons with the Windsor Lancers. In 72 games with the Lancers, Lawrence netted 47 goals and added 38 assists for 85 points. She was named the OUA MVP following her 2016-17 where she put up 32 points in 24 games and has been named the OUA Forward of the Year twice (2016 & 2017). The Warriors also shored up some key recruits at the forward position in Jayda Sachs, Liz Lenardon and Maddie Pritchard who will add some much needed offensive punch to Waterloo’s lineup. In net, rookie Mikayla Schnarr and Alysha Letwin will provide stability between the pipes.

2019-20 SEASON PREVIEW After falling one game short of the McCaw Cup last season, The Mustangs Women’s Hockey team is gearing up for another run this year. “I am excited for this team to hit the ice, we have a strong core returning this year and the incoming class compliments the types of players we have in our lineup.” said Mustangs Head Coach Candice Moxley “This group has a lot of potential to make a statement in the OUA this year.” Among that returning core is OUA MVP April Clark, who tallied 20 goals & 33 points last season. The St. Marys native is in her final year of eligibility and is sure to keep that offensive pressure going. The Mustangs will also need impressive performances from their returning goaltender Carmen Lasis. Last year she was in the top 5 in the OUA in both GAA (1.49) & save percentage (.941). The Mustangs gave up only 41 goals last season in 24 games which was 2nd lowest in the league. On the back end, the Mustangs will look to Renae Nevills to take a leading role with the departure of Edie Levesque, Anthea Lasis & Beatrice Dufour. Nevills is in her fourth season and had four goals and 5 assists last year. With a new season and graduation, the opportunity for some new faces is there for the purple and white. The Mustangs have a trip of players coming from the PWHL Kira Memet from the Oakville Jr. Hornets, Jenna MacLean from the Etobicoke Jr. Dolphins of the PWHL & Emma Thomas from the Kitchener Waterloo Rangers.

2019-20 SEASON PREVIEW The Windsor Lancers women’s hockey team is looking forward to the 2019-20 season as an opportunity for growth. After a rough 2018 campaign in head coach Deanna Iwanicka’s first year, the Lancers and Iwanicka are excited about both the culture and leadership as well as improved depth in her second year at the helm. Though the Lancers lost captain Rachel Chantler, they return both Ashley and Amy Maitre, their entire goaltending core as well as forward Jessica Gribbon. Gribbon’s four goals last year tied her for the team lead along with Alix Reiter who also returns this year. In addition to the returning veterans, the Lancers are welcoming forwards Maggie Peterson and Avery Mertz to the program. Peterson attended Iwanicka’s hockey school and share’s a hometown with her new coach in Edmonton, Alberta. Mertz, who originally committed to the Laurier Golden Hawks, was a late addition and earned a spot after dominating on the ice at camp. Iwanicka called both players “foundational building blocks” in both what the Lancers want to do on the ice and off it in a culture sense. With an experienced core and fresh talent, the Lancers are optimistic about the potential of the team. However, coach Iwanicka says the same reasons for optimism can be misleading, young players sometimes falter early, but there’s no doubt the program is trending in the right direction.

2019-20 SEASON PREVIEW Expectations are on the rise for the York Lions women’s hockey team and early indications are that this team has turned a corner. The Lions are coming off their best year since 2014-15, finishing just outside the playoff picture in ninth place with 31 points. The momentum generated by that improvement, as well as a solid pre-season, has head coach Dan Church and his squad brimming with confidence. “We have a talented team that works very hard,” said Church, who will be behind the bench for his 15th season with the Lions. “We have a more veteran squad this year and we have excellent leadership too. When you put all those pieces together, I think we’ll be one of the most improved teams in the OUA this season. We expect to be a playoff team and who knows how far that will take us.” The Lions were one of the youngest teams in the OUA a couple of seasons ago, but that squad has morphed into a veteran-laden group that understands what they have to do to be successful. They return nine of the top 11 scorers from last season, most notably team captain Erin Locke. She finished in the OUA’s top 10 in scoring last year despite missing the first 10 games of the season, and her 1.43 points per game was the best in the conference. Fellow forwards Kelsey McHolm, Tayler Murphy, Kara Washer and Courtney Gardiner all scored at least 10 points and will be counted on to contribute offensively and lead the Lions attack. The defence is young but extremely talented, and the graduation of former captain Jenna Gray leaves a void that many players have the ability to fill. A pair of sophomore defenders in Julia McLennan and Caroline Eagles have benefitted greatly from a year of experience under their belts, while former OUA all-rookie team member Taylor Davison, now in her fourth year, will step into an even bigger role.

The school winning the OUA Women’s Hockey Championship receives the Judy McCaw Memorial Cup. Women’s university hockey dates back to the 1920s. The original Beattie Ramsay Cup was rededicated as the OWIAA hockey championship trophy, and in 1972, named in memory of Judy McCaw, D.V.M, Captain of the University of Guelph 1967 Women’s Championship Hockey Team.
