PHILIPPI: WOMEN LOSE R30 000

Conning magicians MANDLA MAHASHE A group of con artists, believed to be practising in Philippi, are using the insatiable love of money to defraud unsuspecting victims. The said Angolan group tricked two women from The love of money cost two Marcus Garvey out of R30 000 last month. The women say the bandits are operating in the surrounding areas as well. One victim, who did not want to be named as she feared retribution, said they met one of the men when he sold jewellery door-todoor. Zodwa* said he claimed he knew someone who sold him the jewellery at low prices. “My neighbour and I told him to return at a later stage, as we did not have money but were interested. He returned, accompanied by a short masculine man who only spoke English,” she said. Zodwa described the man who they first met as tall and skinny with a scar above the right eye. He can speak IsiXhosa but his accent “gives him away”, she said. “He didn’t bring any rings or necklaces the second time around. He introduced his friend and asked if we could go somewhere private to talk,” Zodwa explained. “We went into the bedroom where he asked us if we know what money was. We felt a little silly, but we said yes.” She told City Vision the man’s friend told them he could use magic to double money. To demonstrate, this he asked one of them to bring boiling water and plug in the iron. “He then asked for a R20 note and placed it inside two grey plates. He poured water

and a chemical substance, which made us cough and our eyes water, over it,” she said. “Then there was an uncomfortable moment as he then unwrapped the money; there was another R20 note. To test it, we sent someone to the shop and the money was accepted.” The gobwomen R30 000. PHOTO: MANDLA MAHASHE smacked women were then asked to give them R30 000 – which will be doubled. The two women went to their stokvels where they received an amount of R31 000. “We called them and said we have the money and they arrived. Throughout this whole thing, the two looked jittery and even said that they didn’t want other people to know about the deal,” Zodwa said. This time around the process had less theatrics as the conmen told the victims they were taking a “short-cut”. “The short man took the money, put it in between the two plates and then wrapped it in duct tape. The tall one sent me to the shop to buy beer and candles. During that time, they bailed out and left with our money,” she added. When Zodwa returned there was commotion in the street as the two men allegedly ran toward a getaway car, waiting for them. “We are ashamed and scared at the same time. We can’t go to the police, because we worked with conmen. But we can’t say anything, as they [know where we live] and can come and shoot us,” she cried. “All of this year’s savings for my family is gone and the of other families in the stokvel. We have learnt our lesson,” she said. Philippi East police spokesperson Warrant Officer Nondumiso Paul said cases have been opened.

Gugulethu: Brightening the community

Colourful mural near Mzoli’s STAFF REPORTER

Disney has embarked on a very unique project to take-over a wall in Gugulethu with graffiti art depicting Disney XD’s Star Wars Rebels. The graffiti was painted in Lehlohonolo Street, opposite Mzoli’s Place, on Monday. Star Wars Rebels is Disney XD’s biggest series for the year and an animated spin-off of the iconic Star Wars. Deirdre King, head of marketing at The Walt Disney Company Africa, said the graffiti will beautify the area. “The Walt Disney Company Africa is very excited about this project. Not only does it introduce South Africans to Star Wars Rebels, one of our biggest series for the year, but it is a wonderfully unique way to brighten up the area. The Rebellion will also shortly spread to Gauteng,” she said. Continuing the epic tradition of the legendary Star Wars saga, an exciting animated one-hour movie Star Wars Rebels: Spark of Rebellion is set to premiere on Saturday 11 October at 09:20 Disney XD (DStv, Channel 304). It will usher in the highly anticipated series Star Wars Rebels, which will debut Saturday 18 October at 09:20. Gugulethu resident Sipho Marani applauded the painting. “I do not have a problem with the painting. It will make our area look beautiful. Children like the Disney films,” the 38year-old said. Worldwide, the series will air in 33 languages across 163 countries in over 400 million households.

PHOTO: MANDLA MAHASHE Set between the events of Star Wars Episodes III and IV, the story unfolds during a dark time when the evil Galactic Empire is tightening its grip of power on the galaxy. Imperial forces have occupied a remote

planet and are ruining the lives of its people. The motley but clever crew of the starship Ghost – cowboy Jedi Kanan, ace pilot Hera, street-smart teenager Ezra, the “muscle” Zeb, warrior firebrand Sabine, and cantankerous old astromech droid

Chopper – is among a select few who are brave enough to stand against the empire. Together, they will face threatening new villains, encounter colourful adversaries, embark on thrilling adventures and become heroes with the power to ignite a rebellion. At the Star Wars Rebels: Spark of Rebellion Fan Event at the San Diego Comic-Con this year, the movie garnered rave reviews from fans who found the story and look akin to the classic trilogy of films. The series’ designs are influenced by the work of original Star Wars concept artist Ralph McQuarrie. Star Wars Rebels is created by Dave Filoni (Star Wars: The Clone Wars), Simon Kinberg (X-Men: Days of Future Past, Sherlock Holmes) and Carrie Beck. The Lucas Film Animation production is also executive-produced by Filoni and Kinberg as well as Greg Weisman (Gargoyles). The talented voice cast includes Freddie Prinze Jr. as Kanan, Vanessa Marshall as Hera, Steve Blum as Zeb, Tiya Sircar as Sabine, Taylor Gray as Ezra, David Oyelowo as Agent Kallus and Jason Isaacs as the Inquisitor. The Walt Disney Company (TWDC) is a leading, diversified, international, family entertainment and media enterprise with five business segments – media networks, parks and resorts, studio entertainment, consumer products and interactive media group. It has been active, primarily in South Africa, for over 50 years and has three channels on the MultiChoice DStv platform which operates across the continent.

The trouble with ‘get rich quick’ scams THOBILE’S TAKE

gladwell ndzube

I want draw your attention on something I have noticed. I am not sure if I am about to fall into wealth – perhaps because either my email known to all or you can just Google search it. I have been a recipient of so many emails from people wanting to share their wealth with me. Am I part of a plot or the one chosen to be blessed with so much money?. I am sure some of you have had pulsating hearts as a result of these mails, only to realise it is a scam. How many of you could not belief your luck and wanted to act without thinking? Many are so used to getting things from the back of the truck, so sometimes these emails find people wanting. They become easy targets. As a result of poverty or just simply always

looking for luck, some people have fallen for these scams. Some of these emails look authentic. The question I always ask myself is where people find time to write these emails – most of the time it is people who cannot keep their wealth to themselves and they want to share it with strangers. I wish I could trust them enough to share in this wealth. In the past I got emails from Britain, but I have recently received some from African countries. Another thing I have noticed are the shoddy addresses the emails are sent from. That gets me sceptical. I work in IT and have shared the emails with friends. You would be surprised at some of the anomalies they picked up from these emails. The English used is littered with grammatical and spelling errors; the amounts referred to are too big’ and they ask for your details. You still find people falling for these scams.

Besides these email scams, there are also the SMS messages claiming you have won big in a competition and need to claim your prize. I tried calling, but the phone went unanswered. Surely if it were a big company, there would be someone manning the phones? If you win something, people need to call you or your prize must be delivered to the post office. You should not be expected to pay for these and call back. I am not sure if this is still happening, because Mzantsi ulahlile nha, as we are still new to this democratic road and we are open to these scams. I wish people could see through these scams. I would believe something coming from Gidane, our Lottery Board, because I would know I had played Lotto – not just into eziwa elorini. People do not go around expecting miracles – Lotto comes to those who play it. And be careful of scams like these – else you will be scared for life.

Lending a helping hand MANDLA MAHASHE The continued showcasing of successful examples of homes built through alternative technologies, as opposed to brick and cement, is key in changing the mindset of future homeowners. This is according to Yogesh Narsing, executive for special projects at PPC Cement. Narsing spoke to City Vision at the Southern African Housing Foundation’s International Housing Conference, Exhibition and Housing Awards in Somerset West. “People are very comfortable with brick houses and suspicious of other technologies or methods,” he said. “Show houses must be built and alternative material should be made easily accessible and home maintenance possible.” Narsing initiated PPC’s Changing lives through housing initiative, where he shared details about PPC’s Employee Housing Support Initiative. “PPC undertakes a broad range of social investment projects to uplift the communities. On the housing side, we try to engage

municipalities with the aim of improve affordable housing,” he said. “We decided to start home this time around, by giving our employers a chance to own homes.” The company assisted its staff in acquiring homes, Narsing added. “It’s an employee-driven process, which means they have to ask for assistance and cater for employees on lower levels,” he explained. “It’s the gap market employees cannot afford a bond or earn too much to receive an RDP home.” The company was the platinum sponsor of the International Housing Conference, Exhibition and Housing Awards. The theme of this year conference was Affordable Housing Opportunities for Southern Africa. It geared to provide a platform for critical debate on social housing and sought to address key issues faced in South Africa by offering international perspective and highlighting important issues pertaining to the delivery of affordable housing.

Local poet in the big leagues MTHAKAZI MAKALIMA Mnqobi Madlala, popularly known as Mnqobi Da Zulu poet, has been nominated for a SATMA award. He has been nominated in the Best Poet category for Manimufica efile. Madlala has been doing poetry for more than a decade. He started as a young boy, performing at funerals and at school. “I find my inspiration for poetry in the things that happen around me and in my community” he said. The ninth annual SATMA Awards ceremony will be held at the University of Fort Hare on Saturday 18 October. “I will be performing at 99% Venetulor Poetry UWC on Saturday 11 and Wednesday 15 October. I would love for people to come and support me,” he said.

Madlala is known for his unique style of performing which involves the crowed saying the last word of a stanza. Madlala uses his mother tongue, isiZulu, to pass on his message and entertain the audience. “The teachers who taught me isiZulu did a good job and that inspired me to love my mother tongue – to embrace it,” he said. He was born and raised in Bergville in KwaZulu-Natal and moved to the WesternCape upon completion of his schooling. He lived with his cousin who, he says, played a fatherly role in his life and supported him. Madlala is the second eldest of four children; He was his the only son and was raised by his single mother when his father passed away in 1998. He wrote the poem Manimufica efile which

he dedicated to his father. The poem touches on how Madlala felt his father died too soon. He has shared the stage with the likes of Nomfusi and Ringo, and he has collaborated with local artist Ayanda “Ajax” Msomi on the song “Abazohamba kanje”. The track was produced by Aija. When asked how he feels about being nominated for a SATMA, he said: “It means a lot for me. Those who are nominated with me are well-known and signed artists, so it means people love and appreciate what i do and that motivates me.” One of his wishes is to tour Africa and spread his talent. He is currently in his third year of BCom General studies at UWC. Vote for Madlala by SMSing “SATMA, Mnqobi Madala, Best Poet” to 34066 at R1.50. Neighbourhood brawl over pooches MBONGISENI MASEKO

Residents of Crossroads are fed-up with a “rude” neighbour and his pack of dogs. They say they will not rest until the man and his six dogs leave the area. Rholihlahla Crescent Street Committee member Thiyiwe Mathiso (66) claims residents have had no peace since Mabethane Lingwiyo brought his dogs to the home of his girlfriend two months ago. The 75-year-old moved to the house two years ago. Mathiso alleges Lingwiyo uses vulgar language and profanity to residents, who complain about the dogs that intimidate and scare pedestrians. She further alleges the dogs mess on residents’ properties. “He must go with his dogs; we do not want him in the area. He swears at everyone – even young children,” Mathiso said. Residents have called numerous meetings with Lingwiyo, but he failed to attend all. The last meeting was schedule for Monday evening, but was postponed until last night (Wednesday)

as a police officer could not attend. She further alleges Lingwiyo has opened a “false case” of abuse against residents at Nyanga Police Station. “The police came here on Saturday, but they did not arrest us after

we explained that we are being abused by him. We have since been to [Philippi Magistrate’s] court to get a court interdict against him,but couldn’t proceed as the magistrate was not there,” Mathiso said.

“He has also threatened us with death; he is a dangerous man.” A 54-year-old woman, spoke to City Vision on condition of anonymity, said she as angered when she heard Lingwiyo swearing at children from a local creche.

“He said the children provoked his dogs. Some children are now afraid of walking in the street. He said his dogs are going nowhere,” the woman said. There are no reports the dogs biting anyone in the street. But Lingwiyo dismissed the allegations, claiming some residents are jealous of him. “They provoke my dogs. I do not know what they want from me. They are liars,” he said. “Some of the incidents took place in May – why are they only talking now,” he asked. “Nyanga police are weak – some residents were swearing at me in front of them and they did nothing about that. They are abusing me and they are jealous.” Lingwiyo said he is the owner od only three dogs – the other three dogs belong to his friends who are visiting the Eastern Cape. He further undertook to return the dogs to his friends by Wednesday 8 October (yesterday). Damsel’s fairytale dance MANDLA MAHASHE

Having gained much of their relative fame through music, members of Nyanga rap group Generation X have vowed to use it to change the lives of the community. This was evident when they made Linda Dyaluvane’s matric ball night dream come true on Friday 3 October. Generation X trio, comprising Lwazi Thami, Prince Williams and Thulani Sombo, aided the damsel in distress after discovering she did not have a matric dance dress, after party attire or R400 to attend the event. “Two months ago we started an initiative called the Generation X Orphan Support Group. When we realised her plight, the initiative hadn’t started but we decided to help her,” Williams explained. Hearing that the 18-year-old shared a Barcelona Informal Settlement home with 13 relatives compelled them to take action. “We wanted to make her night special, as matric dances are important to girls her age,” he said.

“We took care of everything – her clothes and transport.” Linda was visibly grateful as she told City Vision about her fairytale night. “I was really surprised when they replied to me; I couldn’t believe they did so much for me. The bought me shoes, hired a dress and organised a car,” she said. “My family couldn’t afford it, as my aunt is unemployed.” Dyaluvane, who wants to study accounting after school, hopes the group will continue helping people. Despite also facing tough times, Williams added, they are dedicated to their cause and will do more. Fellow band mate Thami shared his sentiments and invited local entertainers to follow suit. “Many artists plead for community support but after their success, they do little to uplift locals,” he said. “We would love to live lavishly, but we would love it even more if some of our money goes to the improvement of peoples’ lives.”

Get ready for gospel showpiece MTHAKAZI MAKALIMA

If the media launch of the coming Cape Town Gospel Music Association’s awards is anything to go by, then the ceremony itself promises to be a glitsy affair last week. Speaking during a top-notch launch at the Protea Breakwater Lodge in Cape Town, association founder Nwabisa S. Lisa said the coming awards will be “the mother of all gospel music awards the Mother City has seen”. The Cape Town Victory Gospel Music Awards will take place at the Artscape Theatre Friday 28 November. Tickets are on sale from Computicket. Attended by a host of pastors, gospel stars and provincial Sports Arts and Culture minister Professor Nomafrench Mbombo, the launch has surely put pressure on the organisers to “deliver quality awards”. But the hard-working Lisa remains unfazed as she tells me “we are on top of this game”. Nominees in 17 categories gave those in attendance a sneak preview of what they can offer the voting public. “It was a great display of different styles of gospel music, showcasing the talent which Cape Town has,” enthused Lisa. Tshepo M performed contemporary gospel, Sundae Hendricks did a hip-hop gospel infusion and Nosipho Daniels – backed by Jongi and Sihlanu – closed off with a traditional song.

Nwabaisa S Lisa with some of the artists vying for the top honours. The voting lines are open and the public can vote in the following three categories: Best Newcomer; Artist of the Year and Song of the Year. Banging out house beats STAFF REPORTER A new house music duo is set to take the local music industry by storm with the release of their debut album early next year. Mowbray residents Neo Lisenyeho, better known as Nedza and Lungelo Bhushula, fondly referred to as Luungz Monatic, are in the process of recording their album with Ziyawamo Media Group. Local vocalist Nedza (27) is a marketing student and club DJ and while producer Luungz Monatic (24) is a sound engineer student. Both study at Cape Peninsula University of Technology. Apart from their hectic study schedules, they are currently promoting their

debut single Libambe Lingatshoni. The song has been well received by house music lovers across the Cape. Their talent was spotted by the management of Ziyawamo during a music conference in the city last year. Back then the two performed solo. The media group then decided to sign them as a group in August last year. Ziyawamo Media Group’s Mzura Kuse believes the duo will soon become the talk of the town. “They are ordinary people with extraordinary talent. Their style of music is soul-driven, pads local dance motivated percussion and multilingual lyrics – all elements which form definite hits when it comes to good quality African music,” he said.

Tourism: Hop on-and-off taxi tours

Boost for kasi tourism market Experience Langa and Gugulethu in a different way. These two kasis are among the oldest kasis in Mzansi, yet not a lot is known about them. In an attempt to showcase the townships’ beauty and their rich history, a Hansa dreamer known for the So We Too hop-on and-off taxi tour and the Soweto Outdoor Adventure, Kgomotso Pooe (34) launched the one-of-a-kind LaGuGu hop on-and-off taxi tour on last Thursday. Pooe’s aim to encourage people to visit Langa and Gug. He wants Langa and Gugulethu to be known and spoken about like Soweto and Alexandra, as they have their own interesting history. “Langa is the oldest township in the country and it’s sad it doesn’t have so much attention. My aim is to increase foot traffic to this area. There is a lot of things that people don’t know about these two townships, but that’s about to change,” Pooe said. “I have no doubt that the tour will shed more light on these townships which has been taken for granted over the years.” This township tour costs only R290 for adults and R150 for children under 18; children under five travel at no charge. The first taxi leaves the City Sightseeing office at the V&A Waterfront to Langa at 09:00. Once there, explorers have an option to hop off the taxi and spend an hour walking or doing the bicycle tour with community chaperons. They can also talk to the community to get a feel of how they live. Stops in Langa include Brenda Fassie’s house, where the chaperons entertain the

tourists with some of the fallen legend’s songs such as Weekend Special and Vulindlela. The tour also stops at the former dom pass office, which is now a Township Heritage Museum, as well as Sobukwe Square, the place where the Langa Pass March started in 1960. Tourists will be transferred to the past as chaperons chant slogans and toyi-toyi. It also stops at Langa High School, the first high school opened in a township. After a stop at the Beer Hall, tourists will have a look at the N2 Gateway Housing Development as they are driven to Gugulethu. The first stop in this kasi is the anti-apartheid Gugulethu Seven Monument. The tour guide will explain the history of monument before the tour visits the Amy Biehl Monument. Biehl was an anti-apartheid activist who was murdered in Cape Town in 1993. To end the day, tourists will be taken to Mzoli’s Place, where they will enjoy a braai and drinks before heading back to town. Pooe said the tour should be experienced by locals and visitors to our shores. “It’s a fun trip. Chaperons make it enjoyable by re-enacting the actual events and making it easy for everyone to understand,” he said. Pooe featured in the Hansa Pilsner Cheers to the Dreamers campaign last year. Hansa Pilsner marketing manager Refilwe Maluleke said they are supporting Mzansi dreamers who want to make their dreams come true. “We are saluting real South African success stories of business people who have turned their dreams into reality and we are proud that Kgomotso has not stopped dreaming and growing,” said Maluleke.

Road running: Plans to elevate annual race’s status

Nteta, Seti first to cross the line CLIFFY MAGO Healthy living, education and fun was the order of the day at the annual Radio Zibonele 9km Fun Run which at Lookout Hill in Khayelitsha on Saturday 4 October. The annual event, sponsored by Vodacom, attracted close to 500 participants and spectators. The first placed male and female runners, Unathi Nteta and Nomvuyisi Seti, respectively, were each presented with a medal, R2000 cash prize and a smartphone. The second and third placed men and women runners each received R1500 and R500 respectively. “At Vodacom we want to get more involved in the communities we serve, be more accessible to our customers and support their community upliftment efforts. This was the ideal event for us to do so”, said Mandla Hlabisa, Vodacom’s senior marketing coordinator in the region. Hlabisa and his team shared the benefits of the m-pesa mobile wallet with the community. The e-wallet enables customers to send and receive money, buy airtime, deposit or withdraw cash and pay for goods and services at over 240 000 merchant outlets across South Africa. Vodacom also provided music and entertainment on the day and gave away spot prizes and Power Bundles to new customers. “We are grateful to Vodacom for their continued support in partnering with us by sponsoring the prizes and giveaways,” said Radio Zibonele sales and marketing manager Hlumisa Ngomana. “This day would not have been possible without their support.” Ngomana added that there were plans to make the race bigger next year. Seti, a member of the Lion of Itheko Running Club and a familiar face in the local running scene, said she enjoyed running in Khayelitsha. “We often run out of our area, so it’s nice for people to see what we are doing. It will encourage them to join the sport,” she said. Ntetha said the fun run should be developed into a “bigger race so that it can attract top athletes from all corners of Cape Town”. “Nothing stops this race from becoming like the Soweto Marathon,” he said. .

Gugulethu’ sAnele Ngcongca has been ruled out with a knee injury and will not be part of South Africa’s back-to-back Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against CongoBrazzaville, coach Shakes Mashaba said in Rustenburg on Tuesday. “We got an email from his club team yesterday informing us that he’s injured. We’re waiting for them to take him for a scan,” Mashaba said. “They’ll send us the report, but he’s not

three and four of the qualifiers. Defending champions Nigeria also find themselves teetering on the brink of elimination, having failed to register a win in their first two matches. The Super Eagles are the third-placed team in Group A, three points adrift of second-placed South Africa and five off Congo, who top the group. With Sudan, the group’s whipping boys up next for them, back-to-back, winning ways should be restored. For the first time in a long while South Africa look destined to qualify for a major competition. Under new coach Ephraim “Shakes” Mashaba, Bafana Bafana seem to have found a new lease on life and look a confident team away from home. They are on the road this weekend, in Congo – kick-off is at 16:00 on Saturday – and have a realistic chance of leaving Pointe Noire with points. – Supersport

Qualification for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) in Morocco reaches the halfway mark this weekend. And with it comes the added pressure of winning to remain in contention for a place in the finals. As many as 10 nations, including seventime champions Egypt, are in danger of being knocked out of the qualifiers after just three of the six qualifying matches. Nothing but the three points awarded for a victory will do for the Pharaohs, Lesotho, Botswana, Togo, Sierra Leone, Angola, Ethiopia and Sudan if they are to continue in the qualifying process as challengers – not as teams making up the numbers in the groups. This scenario makes Egypt’s visit to Botswana and Lesotho’s hosting of Angola on Friday 10 October relegation six-pointers. Lesotho against Angola at 18:00, kicks off SuperSport’s 18-match broadcast of round
