A Message From the Publisher What you’re holding in your hands—or viewing online—may be a book, but it’s more than that. It’s also a key, a special key designed to open multiple doors. When searching for assistance or information, we often know the resources we need are out there, but we don’t know where to start looking. The Cumberland County Resource DIRECTORY for the Caregiver, Aging, and Disabled is created to unlock the doors to programs and services available in your own community, to ease you through whatever doorway begins your path toward answers and help. An extensive source of information, the Resource DIRECTORY connects you to an abundance of organizations, businesses, and services for Cumberland Countians who are over age 50, who are caring for a loved one, or who have disabilities. Within its hundreds of easy-to-read listings, you’ll find options for housing, physicians, veterans services, legal counsel, advocacy, home improvement, and more. In addition to your many local resources, there are also state and federal programs available that can provide assistance. Plus, we include contact information for Cumberland County police departments, post offices, and emergency services, as well as county, state, and federal government phone numbers for your convenience. The Resource DIRECTORY is available both in print and online (at www.50plusLifePA.com), so it’s accessible whenever and wherever you need it. We sincerely thank the Resource DIRECTORY’s sponsors for their financial support and dedication to their friends and neighbors. Without them, this “key” could not have been fashioned to unlock the doors to so many types of resources in Cumberland County. Sincerely,

Donna K. Anderson, Publisher

5 Ways to Prevent Wandering-Related Incidents By Claire Yezbak Fadden

Every child throws caution to the wind, discovering their world. They explore, touch, taste, and climb, using their inquisitive nature in ways that have worried parents for centuries. Parents of special-needs children know a deeper worry. Their children tend to have more accidents. Like other parents, they can’t prevent every tumble, accident, or scraped knee, but with some foresight and preplanning, there are ways to minimize the opportunities for negative repercussions and even tragedy. 1. Secure the Doors: Noisy door chimes on windows and doors will alert you when something is open, suggests Vicki Couch, 18

mother of a 12-year-old specialneeds child. Install two-sided keyed deadbolts as another way to prevent your child from slipping away unnoticed. Print large-lettered STOP signs and adhere them to all doors, windows, and any other exits. 2. Sound the Alarm: For a child who isn’t able to rely on the warning sound of a fire alarm, install a vibrating or flashing fire alarm and smoke alarm on each level of your home. 3. Have an Exit Strategy: Practice your fire-alarm drill regularly with the entire family so everyone is familiar with the routine. Mark exits with visual cues your child understands. Notify your local fire department of your child’s special needs, eliminating the need for

Cumberland County Resource Directory 2016 – 17

additional explanation should a crisis or emergency occur. 4. Get to Know Your Neighbors: Visit with your neighbors and introduce your son or daughter and leave behind a photo. Inform your neighbors of your child’s specials needs; they could prove to be an extra set of eyes and ears if your child wanders. 5. Be Water Savvy: Children with autism are attracted to the water, so it’s important for a child to know how to swim. Be aware that teaching a child to swim does not guarantee water safety.

Visit the National Autism Association at www. nationalautismassociation.org for a list of facilities offering specialneeds swimming instructions. Fence your pool, and if your neighbors own a pool, alert them to your child’s tendency to wander and notify them of the safety precautions you have taken. Don’t leave any toys or other attractive items in the pool when it is not in use. Claire Yezbak Fadden is an awardwinning freelance writer and mother of three sons. Mobile Safety Products that Can Help Seniors on the Go By Jim Miller

Dear Savvy Senior, Do you know of any medical alert SOS buttons for seniors that work away from the home? I would like to get one for my 80-year-old mother, but would like to find one that’s not limited to the house. – Shopping Son Dear Shopping, There are actually a number of medical alert products on the market today that give seniors the flexibility to call for help both inside and outside the home. For years, medical alert devices (also known as “personal emergency response systems” or PERS) have been popular homesafety products for seniors who live alone. These systems come with a wearable SOS pendant button— usually a necklace or wristband— and a base station that connects to the home phone line. 30

At the press of a button, your loved one could call and talk to a trained operator through the system’s base station receiver, which works like a powerful speakerphone. The operator will find out what’s wrong and will notify family members, a neighbor, friend, or emergency services as needed. But these devices are limited because they only work in and around the house. If you’re away from home and need help, you’re out of luck. But today, there are numerous mobile products that work anywhere. Here are some top options. High-End Device If you’re interested in getting your mom a comprehensive, highend medical alert device that works everywhere, consider the Philips Lifeline GoSafe system. It provides a necklace pendant button,

Cumberland County Resource Directory 2016 – 17

which works like a two-way communication device, allowing your mom to speak and listen directly through the pendant. If your mom were to fall or need help at home, she could press the button and the home-base communicator system would be activated to make the call to an operator at the response center, who would then dispatch help as needed. But if she fell or needed help away from home, the system’s AT&T wireless network would kick in and place the call. This system also has six sophisticated locating technologies so the response center would know your mom’s exact location, even where GPS signals are weak. And it has fall-detection sensors built into the pendant that can automatically summon help if a fall is detected and your mom is unable to push the button. Most Affordable Alert If the GoSafe is more than your mom needs, another option that’s easier on the budget is the GreatCall Splash. This pendant-style, waterproof device, which fits in the palm of your hand, works like a cellphone with GPS tracking capabilities and can be worn on a belt, around the

neck, or attached to a keychain. To call for help, your mom would push one button, and an operator from the device’s emergency monitoring service would be on the line to assist her, and because of the GPS technology, her general location would be known. Or, for even more peace of mind, there’s the Splash with falldetection capabilities that will automatically call for help when a fall is detected. The pendant must be worn around the neck, however, for this feature to work. Other Options If you want some additional options to shop and compare, there are other good companies that offer moderately priced mobile alerts, including Consumer Cellular (www.consumercellular.com/ ally), Bay Alarm Medical (www. bayalarmmedical.com), MobileHelp (www.mobilehelp.com), Medical Alert (www.medicalalert.com), Life Alert (www.lifealert.com), and SafeGuardian (www.safeguardian. com). Home to Stay: What to Look for in a New Residence By Lisa M. Petsche

As we mature, chances are good that eventually our home will no longer suit our lifestyle or our needs. The following are some questions to consider when checking out properties. Building Features •Does it appear to be in good condition? • Is the exterior maintenance-free? • Is there an entrance at ground level? Is it sheltered? • Does the front door have a peephole? Are locks easy to operate? • Is there a one-floor plan? An open-concept layout? • Are hallways and doorways wide enough to accommodate a mobility device? • Is there non-slip flooring? Does carpeting have a low pile? • Are there sturdy handrails on both sides of stairs? Are stairwells wide enough to accommodate a stair lift? 48

• Are they well lit? Is there a light switch within easy reach at the top and bottom? • Is there an attached garage? • Is there central air conditioning? A programmable thermostat? • Is there plenty of natural light? Are windows energy efficient and easy to operate? • Are door handles easy to operate? • Are there ample electrical outlets and phone jacks? What about highspeed Internet access? • Are there smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors? • Do kitchen countertops have rounded corners? Is there counter space next to appliances and cupboards? • In the bathroom, are there grab bars in the tub? A walk-in shower? Built-in shower seat? Single-lever faucets? • Is there a spare bedroom and, ideally, a second bathroom, should live-in help be needed? • If walls are shared with neighbors, what kind of soundproofing exists?

Cumberland County Resource Directory 2016 – 17

Apartment Considerations • Is the building fully airconditioned? • Are common areas spacious, clean, and bright? Are furnishings and décor attractive and modern? • Can elevators easily accommodate a wheelchair or scooter? Are the buttons easy to access? • Does every unit have a balcony or terrace? • Are there in-suite laundry facilities? If not, is the laundry room easy to access? Grounds • Is the lot level? • If there’s an entrance ramp, does it have a gentle incline? • Is there sheltered parking? Ample space for visitors’ vehicles? • Does the neighborhood have sidewalks? • At a house: Are the grounds low maintenance? Are paved areas in good repair? Are there sturdy railings and handrails on porches and decks? Are there motion-sensor lights? • At a condo: Are hard-scaped areas and green spaces well maintained? • Do they include benches? Are there shaded areas? Is there plenty of lighting? Location • Is it central to local relatives and friends?

• Is there easy access to major roads and highways? • Is it central to frequently accessed amenities, such as a grocery store, drugstore, bank, medical services, and place of worship? What about proximity to a shopping mall, library, park, recreation center, restaurants, and cultural attractions? Amenities (where applicable) • What kind of security measures are in place? • Is there a party room for special events and a community room for group meetings? • Are there fitness facilities? Recreation opportunities? • What amenities are included in the monthly condo or homeowners’ association fee, and would you use them enough to justify the cost? If you are planning to relocate, it’s important to take into account not only your current needs and preferences, but also potential future needs. This can maximize your chances of being able to “age in place.” Lisa M. Petsche is a social worker and a freelance writer specializing in boomer and senior issues. www.50plusLifePA.com
