Template MAKE A TEMPLATE WEBSITE INTO AN ABANDONED WEBSITE

1 Choose your template website.

For example go to http://www.web-garden.be/templates/template.php, and choose one of the offered HTML templates. We will use the third one from the first page, this one is called tags. You can download the template, witch includes the three HTML pages, a CSS and the images. We will leave the CSS as it is in this Abandoned template, and will only use the HTML template. Open the Index.HTML file in a text-editor, now you can see the HTML coding they have used.

2 Destruct the HTML code

Now that you have the Index.HTML file in front of you, we can start deconstruct it. We will make the Index.html file look like an abandoned website, and you can of course make it your own in every way you want.

The first thing we’ll do is delete the unnecessary; the text in the template. You can delete the whole area of text, but you can also leave some scrap. You can see the changed HTML code on the next page. The next step is to create some errors in the HTML code. The first three lines we will delete, so this will give the first error: <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1transitional.dtd”> <html xmlns=”http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml”> Then you can delete or add some wrong coding. 3 Deconstruct the images and links

The HTML code now has some errors, but still looks oke. The images on the page all work, but at an abandoned space, not all images work. You can change the background in any picture you want, or leave it as it is.

We will add a picture in the NIEUWS section, but make sure this picture is no longer online. You can find these pictures in Google by just random searching and see if one of the pictures doesn’t exists anymore. (Google saves thumbnails, so it could be that the original image is no longer online). Another option is to upload a picture and just take it of the net, but save the URL. The last option is a funny one, go to http://www.missingimages.com/index.htm and just copy one of the missing images location. On the right side of the page there are some sub links, in the sub menu. You can redirect these links to pages that don’t exist or doesn’t have anything to do with your page. An important element of an abandoned online space. What we will also do to make the page look ‘older’ is to delete the ‘Footer.jpg’, because this shadow was only used in the last years. The background picture we will also change, we made a new one, you can pick one of the internet or also make one yourself.The trick is to make them look oldfashioned, if you take a look at the websites we discussed in the first chapter of the book, you can see what kind of backgrounds they’ve used.

4 Visual dates

Lots of websites have dates written down. Like: Last updated at... or Copyright... These items could indicate that a website wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t updated for a period of time. You can add these items where you want. On the template weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been working on we will add Copyright2003 on the bottom. The HTML code and the result are visible on the next pages.
