Cake & Bake Chilled Orange Mousse with Fresh Orange Glaze A light, creamy and refreshing dessert that can be prepared a day in advance. Serve with crisp butter biscuits or shortbread fingers.

Ingredients: • 3 gelatine leaves • 150ml fresh orange juice • 250g ricotta cheese • 250g full fat soft cheese • 100g caster sugar • 2 tsp orange zest • 300ml double cream • 2 egg whites FOR THE ORANGE GLAZE • 1 gelatine leaf • 150ml fresh orange juice • 2 oranges, peeled, segmented and flesh chopped • Fresh mint sprigs, to decorate

Serves 8 Ready in 1 hour, plus cooling and chilling

TIP Stir a spoonful of warmed fine-shred marmalade into the orange glaze before it cools for an extra tangy flavour.

1. Soak the gelatine leaves in a shallow bowl of cold water for 5 minutes until soft. Heat the orange juice in a small pan until almost boiling then remove from the heat. Squeeze the excess liquid from the gelatine leaves and stir into the hot juice until dissolved. Cool for 15 minutes. 2. Beat the ricotta and cream cheese together in a large bowl until smooth, then beat in the caster sugar and orange zest. Fold in the cooled gelatine. 3. Whip the cream in a bowl until softly peaking and in a separate bowl whisk the egg whites until stiff. Fold the cream into the orange mixture followed by the egg whites. 4. Spoon the mixture into a 20cm square baking dish that is at least 5cm deep. Gently level the surface and chill in the fridge for 3 hours, or until set. 5. To make the orange glaze, soften the gelatine in cold water as in step one. Heat the orange juice in a small pan until almost boiling then remove from the heat. Squeeze the excess liquid from the gelatine leaf and stir into the hot juice until dissolved. Cool for 30-40 minutes, stirring occasionally until beginning to thicken. Pour over the chilled mousse then top with the diced orange flesh. Chill in the fridge for 2 hours, or until the glaze has set. Serve cut into squares decorated with fresh mint sprigs.

MANSFIELD BASED PROSKINS RACE FOR DAWSON Mansfield based Proskins are supporting and raising money for a local boy who needs lifesaving treatment for a rare liver cancer. In January this year at 15 months old, Dawson Willcock from Mansfield was diagnosed with a rare 0.9 in one million cancer, Hepatoblastoma. Since that day Dawson has tried several different chemotherapy drugs, none of which have worked. In April 2017, Dawson's family was told even whilst on chemotherapy, the Cancer had spread to Dawson's lungs. There was a last chance chemotherapy treatment to try and Dawson started this treatment in April. On May 17th 2017, Dawson's family were told the heart-breaking news that the chemotherapy treatment had no effect, the lung tumours have increased in size and his Cancer is chemo resistant. Dawson needs lifesaving treatment in America, which is going to cost £500,000. Dawson's family are in talks with a Doctor in Cincinnati, who has cured many children who were classed as terminal in the UK. The plan is, to spread this as far and wide as possible and get as many people as possible to donate, so Dawson can get the treatment he needs to save his life. Proskins teamed up with a local event to take part in a 5K and 10K run in Dawson’s local area of Mansfield with Proskins Director, Rugby Legend and the finalist of Channel 4’s The Jump - Jason Robinson who ran alongside the Proskins team to support Dawson.

Paddleboarding in a Picanto

o prove just how practical its new city car can be, Kia challenged James Baggott to tackle the Italian coast on a paddleboard.

there’s a 25 per cent increase in luggage space, topping 255 litres with the rear seats up and 1,010 litres with them down.

It’s all too easy to pigeonhole cars like the Kia Picanto as city centre shopping carts, fit for nothing more than a quick trip to the supermarket.

That extra carrying capacity certainly comes in handy. The two giant paddleboards, overnight bags for two and accessories are easily swallowed in the boot, with space left over.

While it might be true that the Korean car firm’s baby has traditionally been bought by grandparents and students, it’s an image the brand is desperately hoping it can shed. This is the third generation of Kia’s second bestselling UK car and with it comes more aggressive looks, a sharper driving style and clever technology aimed at helping it appeal to a far broader spectrum of buyers. That’s why I find myself on a paddle-boarding adventure in Italy: to prove the new Picanto’s versatility, Kia has invited us to the Toscana coastline, crammed two blow-up paddleboards, wet suits and a picnic in the back of one of their latest city cars and pointed us towards the coast. Costing from just £9,450, the Picanto now boasts more passenger and luggage space but with no overall increase in size over the previous model. Inside

There’s a choice of engines in the new model. Our test vehicle – in ‘2’ specification – features the 1.0 litre 66bhp unit. But there’s also a 1.25 litre 83bhp option and a 1.0 litre turbocharged option. Even the lowest output unit gets the city car to 60mph in 13.8 seconds and gives a top speed of 100mph, while sipping fuel at a miserly 64.2mpg rate on the combined cycle. Crossing the rich, lush green vinecovered Italian countryside near Grosseto as we attempt to find the beach, the Picanto’s light steering and peppy engine impresses, as does its ability to soak up potholes you’d fear would otherwise swallow it. As we approach the beach, the asphalt crumbles away and the Picanto skips between giant holes littering the sandcovered track to the water.

After an hour’s paddleboarding followed by some impromptu surfing, there’s time to play with the kit while drying off in the supportive front seats of the Kia. It’s functional not flashy inside, and despite the smaller screen for the multimedia system on this mid-range ‘2’, it still works well with your phone, streaming Spotify perfectly. There’s air conditioning, electric front and rear windows, heated door mirrors and a leather trimmed steering wheel; that’s on top of the standard options, which include remote central locking, USB and AUX ports, electronic stability control and automatic emergency braking. Kia has certainly moved its Picanto on in leaps and bounds from its predecessor. On the road it’s sharper to drive, quieter and more sporty than ever before. Its new technology – which on higher specification models even includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto – is impressive, while it’s a comfortable car to spend time in. What’s more, it’s always satisfying to know that even though it’s a car unlikely to shed that blue rinse stereotype, if you are a more adventurous owner it can cope admirably with all the kit you’ll need to escape city life.

LASTING POWER OF ATTORNEY: Your duties as an Attorney

n this edition we will consider your duties where you have been appointed as an Attorney under a Lasting Power of Attorney for Financial Decisions. Under the Mental Capacity Act 2005 (MCA) your starting point is that the donor of the power can make their own decisions. Your role as an attorney is to help them to make their own decisions. Only in circumstances whereby you have provided all the necessary assistance to the donor to help them make a decision and they are unable still to make that decision, can you make it for them. However before you make a decision you must first:• Follow any written instructions included in the LPA and/or • Take into account any preferences the donor included in the LPA. Decisions made on behalf of the donor must be in their best interests. Therefore the decisions must be made bearing in mind what the donor would have decided themselves, and their past and present values and wishes. If you are faced with an important decision such as selling the donor’s house because they are living in a permanent residential care/nursing home, it is extremely important to first check the terms of the donor’s Will. This is because if the donor has left their house as a specific gift to a beneficiary and you then sell it, the gift to that beneficiary will fail. However, if you apply to the Court of Protection for an order authorising the sale of the property, the gift will not adeem (fail).

In this situation the beneficiary takes the same interest (so far as the estate assets will allow) in any property representing the original asset in the donor’s estate at death. So, for example, if the house sale was authorised by the Court of Protection and the net sale proceeds of say £100,000 were paid into the donor’s account and on his death the balance of all his assets amounted to £110,000, then the original gift of the house (now converted to money) still stands to the original beneficiary.

Chaffinch

Chaffinches, like their finch cousins, are predominantly seed and nut eaters, but will take grubs and their larvae, plus spiders and caterpillars particularly, during the breeding season and like other finches, fruit tree buds during Spring. They are common visitors to bird tables and nut and seed dispensers so if you have one or both in your garden, you will soon get a visit from them.

They have been known to take residence for breeding in open fronted nest boxes placed well out of sight of predators such as cats, squirrels and magpies and these can be purchased at most garden centres. Their call is a rather monotonous, repetitive, short monologue of notes starting high and finishing low and, once you know its call, like its cousin the Greenfinch, it is easy to remember. They also do a single ‘pink’ ‘pink’ call when looking for food, usually around fruit trees.

The male Chaffinch is unmistakable with its stout seed crushing bill and bright pink chest feathers and, when in flight, white tail feathers can be clearly seen. The female is less colourful than her male counterpart being a dull brownish colour so as to be less conspicuous to predators when sitting her eggs.

They are resident all year round and will gather with other finches, buntings and tits in large flocks to search for food during hard winter months in gardens and farm fields. Like most birds, hard winters can cause fluctuations in their numbers and I have on more than one occasion resuscitated chaffinches suffering from hyperthermia in my own garden down the years.

The Chaffinch nest is a woven grass cup, lined with moss and feathers and is usually located in a dense, thick hedge or bush. Hawthorn and Pyracantha are excellent hedges or shrubs for them to nest in your garden. Four to five eggs are common and the youngsters are fed by both

A Busy November by Pippa Greenwood

Despite the seasonal slowdown there are lots of jobs which, if done now, could end up saving you time and money later on so here are the top November gardening tasks to get to grips with. Hoe off weeds that are around now, as some might still set seed during mild, damp periods. Provided they have no seed pods their top-growth can safely be composted, but bin, burn or rot down fleshy weed roots to prevent them growing in the compost heap! Cut back or pick off obviously diseased leaves and stems to neaten flower beds and borders, and remove some of the foliage that is dying back purely due to the time of year. Leave some deteriorating but healthy foliage in place to provide protection for the crowns of more fragile plants. Rabbits become more of a menace as natural food supplies reduce, so make sure that rabbit netting is not damaged and that trees, especially those that have been planted recently, are fitted with tree guards. If there is a sizeable tree near your lawn, rake up fallen leaves on a regular basis to prevent damage to the grass beneath.

Trees, shrubs and climbers that have been planted recently may need protection from frost and cold winds over their first winter. Use a layer or two of horticultural fleece draped over the plant and pegged in place; it can be removed on warmer days. Fleece ‘jackets’ with a drawstring and in various sizes are available from my website, see www. pippagreenwood.com/products/ protect-your-crops. If you’re planning on hedgeplanting, remember that many hedging plants are cheaper if bought ‘bare root field grown’, meaning lifted from their nursery field without being potted on. Use seed catalogues and websites to help decide what you want to grow next year. Many suppliers offer seeds and young plants of many vegetables, so order now and you can relax, knowing that you have got your first choice selection. And last but not least, before water butts fill up with autumn rain grab a sturdy brush and clean each one out thoroughly, removing deposits of algae, soggy bits of plant and general gunge!
