My father once installed a thought in my head that I’ve questioned most of my life. His fear was that I would pursue a career as an artist, a writer or musician, since this is how I spent every spare second as a child. And I would live in poverty, struggling against a big cruel world breaking sensitive artists every day. It was much better, he said, to establish a more business-focussed career, create financial stability and keep your passions for your free time. This is touching on something we all face I’m sure — the balance between doing what you love, and doing what pays rent. Whatever path you choose is the right one. A combination I think is the best. Either way, I committed myself to the advertising industry. I’m a very analytical, reason-orientated person so advertising was a good fit for my creativity. I left Cape Town where I was born and started an agency in west London. The advertising business model didn’t look to free me financially so I left for Norway and started a mobile marketing business called Vidamo. The grand plan was to create a business which could generate recurring revenues monthly, leaving me free to get back to my ‘hobbies’ as my father called them. Problem with Norway is it’s too damn beautiful. I couldn’t put my camera down. Chance events led me to magazines and fashion. And I succumbed to my passion, to become a photographer.
