The Look Irish hedges and fields hold a bounty of beautiful wildflowers perfect for a summer wedding table. Loosely gathered into old jam jars in a small wooden box (get himself involved) surrounded by tealights, they give a riot of colour for pennies. The jars can be then given to guests to take home as favours. Simple rustic eco-chic.

This look works best on long tables rather than round, as the low floral arrangements look better spread evenly in a row rather than clustered together in the centre. Long tables are also reminiscent of picnic dining.

Summer Showers Love in Ballybeg We’re delighted to have Tara and Paul, whose engagement we featured on the blog a couple of months ago, as our first ever cover-couple. Their wedding in Ballybeg House epitomises the fundamental ideals of One Fab Day - it’s full of personal and unique details that reflect Tara and Paul’s love story and life together; it’s exceptionally stylish; and it’s totally Irish. This celebration captured by Christina Brosnan dispells all those fears and doubts about an outdoor wedding in Ireland. It rained and they loved it! 48 | One Fab Day

Ballybeg House was the perfect choice of venue for this outdoorsy couple, not least because of the beautiful little Grouse Lodge, a romantic hideaway in the hills above the main house. The night before the wedding, Tara and her ladies enjoyed a little girl time together before a hectic morning of pampering and beautifying‌

50 | One Fab Day

“I wanted the girls to have something they could wear again, so I chose these pink vintage style dresses from Stop Staring, I just wish I’d bought one myself!”

While the ladies relaxed in Grouse Lodge, Paul and his men readied themselves in Ballybeg House

Paul’s brother Jim was on doubleduty for the day, acting as a groomsman and accompanying girlfriend Helen on guitar during the ceremony.

52 | One Fab Day

One Fab Day | 53

Dispelling the myth Tara and Paul chose Ballybeg for its spectacular setting among the Wicklow hills, but as is wont in Ireland, the morning of the wedding the heavens opened, threatening their dream of an outdoor ceremony. But Paul was not to be deterred after all they were engaged under an April shower, so why not be wed?

54 | One Fab Day

One Fab Day | 55

“For me the highlight was the ceremony in the rain! We really wanted to get married outdoors but when I saw how bad the weather was I just assumed it would be moved inside. When I pulled up outside and saw everybody outside with their umbrellas I was so excited. Sitting under our umbrella (surprisingly not getting wet!) surrounded by all of our friends and family was really special.

LOVE UNDER COVER

Tara’s beautiful lace tea-length dress is a vintage original – a 1950’s Ceil Chapman found at The Goddess Rooms, for whom she has high praise. “I can’t say enough about The Goddess Rooms, they were amazing - patient and meticulous!” Her pretty white pumps were swapped for an orange pair of heels later in the night, tying in with her subtle pastel colour scheme for the bridesmaids and beautiful florals by The French Touch.

“We wanted the day to reflect us, and for everybody to feel relaxed and comfortable but special at the same time. Great food was essential, and we wanted the reception to feel like one big family dinner. We’re very lucky to have a lot of talented friends and family. My Aunt and Uncle made the napkin ties from pieces of old fabric my Mam made my dresses from when I was a child. Sharon (my bridesmaid) stamped all of the name tags and tags for the table plan by hand, and we made small photo props for each table.”

62 | One Fab Day

“when I first caught a glimpse of you in your dress…”

One Fab Day | 63

Tara and Paul’s engagement story formed the inspiration for the motif that graphic designer friend Aidan created for all of their stationery. The pair are avid hikers, and last Easter on a hike up Carrick Mountain found themselves running for cover under the only tree in sight. While Tara bravely set about unpacking the picnic they’d brought, Paul produced a sparkler and popped the question. Thus the little tree on a hill motif that appears on all the stationery and even their special homebrew.

One Fab Day | 65

66 | One Fab Day

“We knew we wanted somewhere relaxed that felt more like a home than a hotel and was close to Dublin, so Ballybeg was perfect - the atmosphere in the marquee is really special and the grounds are beautiful.

One Fab Day | 67

“It’s nice to have people who can’t be there represented…” The beautiful tall white wedding cake encrusted with pearls of icing was the work of family friend Jenny, and taking pride of place on top was a very special pair of lovebirds, left to the happy couple by Paul’s grandmother.

newlywed words of wisdom “Stay true to yourselves and make the day yours. If it’s important to you then do it, if it’s not, then don’t. And do DIY! It’s fun, adds a personal touch and gets people involved. But most importantly, enjoy yourself!”

BRIDAL TRENDS SIX TO WATCH FOR 2013

MARCHESA

BADGLEY MISCHKA

Slim, sleek and silky silhouettes dominated the 2013 collections, undoubtedly the influence of Jenny Packham, who has emerged as the star bridal designer of 2012. While most suitable for slimmer brides, clever draping and eye-catching detailing are the key to making this look work for every figure.

MARCHESA

ILLUSION The demure look of the illusion neckline, first introduced last year at Oscar de la Renta, has proven very popular with modern brides. Mimicking the soft mystery of the wedding veil, illusion necklines involve sheer panels of chiffon or lace on the bodice, often with subtle ANGEL SANCHEZ

With almost 2 billion people watching last year’s royal wedding, it’s no surprise that Kate Middleton’s bridal style has been hugely influential on the new collections.
