Dear

Director’s Letter

OMPA members, Many OMPAmembers are in full pre-production mode in anticipation of the promise of beautiful weather with which to shoot outdoors. I have been joyfully hearing about your pending projects and meeting crew who are testing cameras. The industry seems to be in a flurry of activity. March was a busy month for OMPA’s office. Anne and I hosted or co-hosted three events (a record even for us) SourceOregon2017 release party, OMPA’s Annual Award Show and Grimm’s final episode screening. We also had the pleasure of attending the screening of Kyle Eaton’s ‘Shut Up Anthony’ and the screening of Hollywood Theatre’s PDX Airport shorts featuring 5 OMPAmembers; House Special’s ‘Lamentation,’ Josh Lunden’s ‘Modern Dark,’ Patrick Neary’s ‘CowBurd,’ Uncage the Soul Productions’ ‘Finding Oregon,’ and Chel White’s ‘Magda.’ It was wonderful to be able to connect with so many members. We are looking forward to our next several months whereby we will be traveling around the state to see members in Ashland, Eugene and Bend. As a quick reminder, OMPA is the champion for the film, television and interactive media industry. We achieve our mission through the pillars of advocacy, being the resource and hub for our members. This issue of The CallSheet is rich with information about OMPA’s two pillars; resource and membership. Inside you will read about the intention behind the decisions for SourceOregon2017. You will also see that OMPA’s Board of Directors voted to approve a request we made to lower membership dues and to meet your desire to have recurring payment options. You speak and OMPA listens. You have an opportunity to have your voice heard with a survey we are conducting through the services of University of Oregon’s School of Journalism and Communication. OMPA is repeating a survey from 2016 so we can gather longitudinal data to measure the progress we have made over the past year. If you have not received a notification of the survey and wish to participate, please email us your request. Our staff of two has been dedicated to meeting with our members, enriching your membership experience and celebrating your successes. Thank you for being a part of Oregon’s only non profit that advocates for your industry.

Membership matters,

Janice

INSIDE SOURCEOREGON 2017 by janice shokrian

Have you received your copy of OMPA’s SourceOregon2017 Directory? Have you ever wondered about the thought process that went into producing this annual publication? I hope you enjoy the insight behind the pages of SourceOregon 2017. Click the cover to read the magazine online!

What does OMPA do with these directories?

• Oregon Film uses these directories as a marketing tool. • OMPA hand delivers these directories to every legislator to show them how many Oregonians make a living in this industry - plus you are informed voters! • OMPA brings these directories to the film festivals we sponsor (in-kind) to be distributed to filmmakers as a marketing tool for our state. • OMPA members receive a free copy of the directory and non-members may have a directory for $20/each.

SourceOregon 2017 has a theme!

The magazine portion of the publication is focused on Crews in the Field. This theme was chosen as our way to thank our legislators for inspiring us to include a regional incentive which goes into effect in 2017. This also inspired me to partner with Travel Oregon to showcase the vast landscapes for Oregon Film to highlight amazing locations and for OMPA to showcase the talent of our members being able to shoot in these beloved locations. 10

ompa members first

OMPA only hired OMPA members as writers for the articles

When I first began working at OMPA, I would hear “I never get a job from SourceOregon.” Well, I heard you and now OMPA will only hire OMPA writers, because we believe in you!

only OMPA members’ projects are featured in the publication

You support the association that advocates for you - it is OMPA’s way of thanking our members. You produce outstanding work - enough said! OMPA has an abundance of work from which to choose. Even the publishing house, Bridgetown Publishing, is an OMPAmember.

OMPA members are listed first in the directory.

Why? Again, we thank you for being a member and supporting the non-profit that advocates for a healthy film industry across the state.

future plans What about SourceOregon2018?

Yes, once this annual publication is released, OMPA begins work on SourceOregon 2018. We are focusing on AR/VR/Animation. We are hoping to have a UX in the magazine portion. However, this will depend upon finding the right sponsors to make this happen.

How much does it cost to produce the SourceOregon and why does OMPA still publish this directory? SourceOregon is just over ⅛ of OMPA’s operational budget. It is an expensive endeavor indeed. Only 5 states publish an annual directory. Oregon is the only state that publishes a magazine portion of the directory. Why doesn’t OMPA drop the printed version and focus online? The printed version of the directory is a tangible documentation of the depth of the crew and industry for when OMPA speaks with our legislators. Having a magazine portion of the directory informs our politicians of the productions that have been accomplished from year to year. 11

Looking ahead for SourceOregon online?

OMPA is finalizing our request for proposals to revamp our SourceOregon online. We hope to have these changes in the works by the fall of 2017. What are some changes that OMPA would like to see? Foremost, it is important to OMPA that our members are seen first in the online directory. Why? Again, we thank you for being a member and supporting your nonprofit association to advocate for you. Secondly, OMPA would like to have a more dynamic search engine. Thirdly, well, that entails the integration of our website with the directory so you only have to remember one log-in and password. Yes, we are working on it!

Most filmmakers wouldn’t expect that Muse Storytelling, a filmmaking company whose stories have earned 5 Emmy-Awards for their work with CBS and Showtime, first began in a university dorm room. A couple of Canadian, psychology students launched a journey in DIY wedding filmmaking as a way to save money for their own documentary. Looking beyond the diamond rings, cakes, and bouquets, what Patrick and Amina Moreau cared about most was the real people, and the story, behind the glitter of the ceremony. It was this story-first approach that first landed them a feature-length documentary with the NFL, and continued to drive their work with some of the world’s biggest brands and the launch of 4 more feature-length documentaries.

Today, Muse Storytelling’s mission has developed to be much bigger than their personal creative pursuits. They’ve spent the last decade refining and teaching their storytelling process to teach other filmmakers across the world. Through hundreds of workshops across a dozen countries and six continents, presenting for the United Nations, Youtube, Vimeo, and Canon, Muse Storytelling has transformed into a team of relentless educators who recognize story as the most effective means of communication. And with the launch of their new speaking and storytelling workshop events, Muse Storytelling can now get to know your team, and tailor live events based on your unique goals and challenges. You’re invited to learn more at musestorytelling.org/speaking-and-workshops. Here you can reach out to share your story, and start a conversation of what a speaking or workshop event would look like for you, and how it would support you in connecting people and delivering on your goals.

Open Signal launches 10-month immersive program for digital artists and makers Applications accepted through June 16, 2017 As the cost of traditional degree program increases each year, Open Signal introduces Future Forum, an accessible alternative for media artists and makers. This in-depth experience is part artist residency, part structured learning program and part community engagement; a unique opportunity for artists who use technology to strengthen skills and expand their work. Between August 2017 and May 2018, the first cohort of 12 participants will benefit from focused training, independent projects and interactions with professionals in the field. Making use of the state-of-the-art equipment and facilities at Open Signal, the cohort will cultivate media skills of their choice, exploring filmmaking, experimental media, creative coding and more. They will be part of a shared learning environment that encourages collaboration and exchange of ideas. Future Forum participants will also share their knowledge and gain teaching skills by delivering a media education experience to an Open Signal partner organization that serves marginalized populations. Partners may include Open School North, Benson Polytechnic High School or Columbia River Correctional Institute. Future Forum is led and conceived by Stephen Slappe, head of the Video and Sound department at Pacific Northwest College of Art. "Future Forum is an opportunity to experiment radically with art and education," said Slappe. "We'll have more room to play outside of the walls of the institution. Participants will have time to incubate their work in a supportive, community-based approach to learning."

“We want to remove the massive debt that often accompanies art education," said Taylor Neitzke, Open Signal Program Director. "We believe that increasing higher education costs stifles diverse voices in the arts and we want to hear more of those voices. The cost to attend the 10-month program is $3,000. Two work-study students will receive up to a full subsidy of the program costs. Applications for the program and work-study positions are due June 16, 2017. Read more about the program and application. About Open Signal Open Signal is a media arts center making media production possible for anyone and everyone in Portland, Oregon. Launched in January 2017, the center builds upon the 35-year legacy of Portland Community Media to create a resource totally unique in the Pacific Northwest. Open Signal delivers media programming with a commitment to creativity, technology and social change.

Metro TV Channel 21 to Receive International Film Festival Films on Special Loan Metro TV Community Channel 21, is receiving the loan of newly released indie films from two

area international juried film festivals, with the permission of the filmmakers. Metro TV staff reviews the films, which are family friendly and feature length. This is a rare opportunity for the community to view recent juried films on Comcast Channel 21 that are currently on the festival circuit. Each film will be loaned for a month after each festival has concluded, with no limitation on the number of times that Channel 21 can air the film. The titles and schedules of the films will be announced on Channel 21. One contributor is the non-profit DisOrient Asian American Film Festival of Oregon, sited in Eugene, celebrating their 12th year. Films will be screened at Bijou Art Cinemas on 13th Avenue during the Festival weekend, April 21-23, 2017. Mayor Vinis will provide Welcome remarks to audience and attending filmmakers on April 21. Over 40 filmmakers are slated to attend, from several locations internationally and within the continental U.S. DisOrient, an Asian Celebration partner event, promotes the talent of Asian filmmakers and portrays important Asian themes using film as the medium. The festival was established by Jason Mak, a former City employee now working at the State of Oregon. disorientfilm.org The other film contributor is the non-profit Archeology International Film Festival, also sited in Eugene, the longest running film festival in our area. Their festival runs May 3-6, 2017. archaeologychannel.org Metro TV Channel 21 operates within the Comcast areas of Eugene, Springfield and Lane County. Our community TV channels are an effective means of reaching cable audiences on a wide range of issues. The channels are provided through a contract with Comcast TV for their long term use of the Eugene public rights of way, managed by the City’s Telecommunications Program. For additional information about this new programming opportunity, please contact Pam Berrian, Telecommunications Program Manager, Information Services Division, at 541-6825590, or Neil Moyer, Metro TV, at 541-682-3799.
