What would it be like to be Santa’s elf this Christmas? Welcome to The Chronicle’s annual children’s Christmas Writing and Drawing Contest. Youngsters through fifth-grade were asked to write an original story or draw a picture on the theme of “What would it be like to be Santa’s elf this Christmas?” Many teachers incorporated the writing contest into their lessons, with students producing hundreds of thoughtful stories and detailed drawings. So, we invite you to grab a cup of hot cocoa and some cookies, settle into a comfy chair and enjoy the imagination and artwork of children in our area. What would it be like to be Santa’s elf this Christmas? By Evee Rodriguez First place, Second-grade North Omak Elementary The night before Christmas in the middle of the night, I heard bells ringing. I eagerly jumped out of my bed and zoomed across the hallway. Then, I gently opened the door and I saw an adorable little reindeer. Then, I said, “I’m going to name you Cupid, little Cupid,” but then I saw his name tag. Then, I heard stomping , “oh no, my Dad’s coming!” So I said to the reindeer, “Meet me at the church.” So he flew off. Next, I went to the living room and sneaked on the couch. Then, my Dad came, and he went back to bed. So I put on my coat and shoes. Then I went to the church. I got there and I called, “here girl, here girl,” because I knew it was a girl reindeer. Next, she came so I hugged her. Finally I saw a great big light and it was Santa. I said, “time for you to go.” Next Santa said “come here, please.” So it was time for me to say goodbye. Santa said, “Merry Christmas.” Then, I saw an old sled so I tried fixing it except for the paint. So I painted it red and it had a little bit of yellow dust then I heard a ringing noise. It was the reindeer. Then, I read its tag – his name was Flakey, so I went to the North Pole on the sleigh and didn’t come back home. We got ice cream, and a slushy, and a Blizzard. It was a brownie kind. That’s what I did on Christmas.
By Elidai Corter Second place, Second-grade North Omak Elementary If I was an elf, I would be a good elf. I would eat all of the cookies and Olaf would eat all of the cake. Olaf stuffed a piece of cake back into the cake. At night time, me and Olaf opened presents. But the naughty elf caught us opening presents and told Santa. We stayed at Santa’s house and played in the snow all together. And made a new girlfriend. He was so so happy. Then Santa had to get new presents, now cake and cookies. And next we made toys for other kids. Everyone opens presents. Me and Olaf got cool stuff. And we had the best Christmas ever. The next day we went to the park and had so much fun. The End.
If I was one of Santa’s elves, I would be called Kandy Yo-Yo. I would work in the bakery department. First, I would make the awesome batter for cheeker’s cupcake. Next, I put it in the amazingly cool fridge. And then I take it out of the amazingly cool fridge. I would be awesome if I worked in Santa’s baker department. •••••• By Chrystian Clark Honorable mention, Second-grade North Omak Elementary One day in the North Pole, I was polishing Santa’s shoes when I heard Rudolph dashing off with Santa. I yelled “Stop, Santa needs his shoes!” But it was too late, the sleigh got away. I went to look and at last I found Santa. Now I need to find Rudolph. I look everywhere, then I found Rudolph. called Holiday Christmas Elf and I would work in the toy workshop and gift wrap department. First, I would make a special cute toy for the children. Next, I would put
a sparkle and curly ribbon on the awesome and cool present. It would be so exciting if I worked in Santa’s toy workshop and gift wrapping department.
If I was an elf, I will wake Santa up and I will decide your bedtime. How it was fine. So, do you want hot cocoa, sir? No thank you. OK, but can I go in the sleigh with you, please? Hmmm, OK, yes! But Jack Frost is coming with us, OK. So, when are we going to deliver the presents, sir? OK, first we make the toys. Then we will check the toy, next we make them into presents and we put them in Santa’s bag. And I got in the sleigh and Santa came and got on the sleigh and we finally deliver the presents and then when we were done delivering the presents together we will say “Ho, ho, ho Merry Christmas to all a good night.” The End. •••••• Rylan Robbins Honorable mention, Second-grade North Omak Elementary At the North Pole, Olaf ate all the chocolate cake and stuffed it back into the cake. Pretty Elsa got jealous and stole the presents. Then she put them back. Then I would open my presents. I would go sled on my purple sled. Cute Olaf quickly zoomed all around the world. He put presents in, then he flew back. Santa brought me donuts and an Elsa doll. ••••••

By Gracie Huberty Second place, Third-grade Virginia Grainger Elementary By Ava Freese First place, Third-grade A is 4 Apple Christian School My name is Holly. I’m an elf. I help Santa make toys for good little boys and girls all year. There are only a few days until Christmas and Santa’s shop is busy, busy, busy! One day a horrible storm came two before Christmas and the storm destroyed 10,000 toys! Santa and the other elves were very, very worried. Santa thought Christmas would have to be cancelled. I told Santa I had an idea. Santa said, “Be quiet everyone. Holly has an idea. OK, Holly tell us your idea.” “Let’s play a game everyone.” “OK, but what is this game called?” asked the other elves excitedly. “The game is called building toys,” I said with a smile. “This is how we play the game. We put elves into two teams. Each team has to build 5,000 toys in two days.” When everyone heard this they got to work right away. Even Santa got work “Ho! Ho! Ho! Away we go!” said Santa. The workshop was the busiest it was all year. We got all the toys made again and Christmas was saved. “Hip, hip, hooray! Hip, hip, hooray! Hip, hip, hooray!” we all shouted. Santa said “Time to load up my sled.” So we filled up Santa’s sled with toys. Then Santa said “Come Dasher and Dancer and Prancer and Vixen and Comet and Cupid and Donner and Blitzen and the most famous reindeer of all, Rudolph. Now my reindeer. Ho! Ho! Ho! Away we go! I’m a worker elf for Santa Claus. My name is Snowball. Here at Santa’s workshop there are fun times, adventurous times and sometimes even times where there are problems! One time a whole big can full of the most powerful bouncy balls fell over! It was like a jungle of bouncy balls! It was really funny and fun! Another time an elf named Sean accidentally fell in Santa’s bag of toys! It took a very long time to get Sean out. Almost Forever! The most exciting thing that happened was when I (Snowball) went to the reindeer barn and saw that all the reindeer were gone!!! Two other elves named Light and Star helped me find all the reindeer. You have to make lifesized ponies for Pete’s sake! Gosh, and when your new you have to meet Bob! Most elves think he’s related to a hippo. Christmas Eve is what we call, “Every-ladyfaint-day.” You’re thinking: Rudolph stop eating Vixen’s fur! It’s disgusting! Prancer! Don’t bite your nails! Ahhh! COMET GET AWAY FROM THE SNAKE!” (And then you see it’s rubber because snakes don’t live here!) “CHRISTMAS!!! AAH!” Elves flailing their arms uncontrollably, crying with joy, it’s a one day break! First I would help by making toys like bikes and books for all the good chi ldren out there. Then I will help by washing the re indeer so they are sparkl ing when they are flying on Christmas night. I will also help Mrs. Claus bake lots of cookies for Santa and the elves. I’ll also help by wrapping all the presents for Santa Claus. And then I will help by placing the presents in the sack for Santa. Then when Santa leaves I will tell all of my elf friends we did it and then we will all have a party, and it will have lots of cookies and cake and we will dance and sing. After the party I’ll go to sleep. And then when Santa Claus gets home I am going to say, “I love you Santa and thank you for all the good memories that you gave me.” I will give him a great big hug. And then we will have a party and at the end of the party Santa will tell me he loves me too. He will give me a big hug and I’ll make him laugh. I will tell him one of my jokes so it goes like this. I’ll say, “Do you want to know how to find the North Pole and he will say, “How?” I’ll say, “By going north and find ing a pole” and then we will laugh and eat lots of cookies. I will give him a kiss and he will give me a kiss on the cheek. Then we will dance and sing together and we will have fun and then we will take off all of the decorations off the Christmas tree and start making the toys for next Christmas. And then I’ll say to Santa, “I have a gift for you.” And he says, “What is it?” ‘I’ll say, “It is a picture of me, you, Mrs. Claus, and the elves.” Then I will start making a list for Mrs. Claus of all the things that she needs. When I have to leave I will tell Santa I will make pictures for all the elves for you

I would dress as Santa and go down the chimney and steal the presents and say “Whahaw!” Then I would take the presents and put the presents down the shredder machine and say “Mwahaha.” but I would have to put on gloves so the people would have no proof that I did it. And I would take the Christmas tree and take the candy canes off the tree and eat the candy canes. Then I would take the stocking and eat the candy. I would take the decorations and put them in the shredder machine and say “Mwahawmuahaha” and run away. Then I would go to another house and I would take their presents and the food and pie and candy and have a feast and say “haha.” And I would not share and I would rob it in there fast. Then some sweet girl would come in and say to me, “Do not be the Grinch.” Then Santa would come in and say, “She is right. Please do not be a Grinch. You are being selfish.” The girl said, “You should give back the toys and food and pie and candy.” I said I put it in the shreader machine. Santa said “But, no, the presents are right here.” “But I ate the food.” Then they went back to the house and gave the presents and food and pie and candy and the stockings and she became the new Santa. But what the new Santa did not know was that the old Santa had powers and the girl was the elf.

He said “Yes, you can help me.” Next, I climbed into Santa’s red sled and we started to fly. End of Chapter 1 Then the elves and I started dropping at Strawberry’s house and Santa started dropping the presents under the tree. Then we got back to the sled and went to Kade’s house. Finally, Santa picked out 30 presents for my baby sister, Ximena. Then he picked 30 for my big sister, Mauraye, and 30 for everyone. On Christmas morning, I woke up and found our presents under the tree. My mom got 20 pairs of shoes and 10 clothes. My brother Moon got 20 toys and 10 clothes. My baby sister Ximena got 20 toys and 10 clothes. And I got 20 stacks of Pokemon cards, 10 stacks of high heels and 10 stacks of dresses. And grandma Lorna got 10 stacks of pants and 10 stacks of shoes and 10 stacks of shirts. The end.

What would it be like to be Santa’s elf this Christmas? By Tucker Youngblood First place, fourth-grade Tonasket Elementary It was Christmas day and lots of boys and girls were good. There was 1,000,000,000 kids were good and 900 kids were bad. Anyway, Santa was like a father to us elves. Once we saw him running around in his underpants. It was funny because he yelled “Ah, I ate to much food. How am I going to eat cookies?” Then a big storm hit. “Oh no, Santa, we have a big problem,” I said. “What?” said Santa. “There is a huge storm,” I said. “Oh no,” said Santa. “What are we going to do?” When we were at the meeting room, Santa said “Gather, gather everyone. I have some bad news. We are probably going to cancel Christmas this year.” All the elves gasped. “Oh no, what are we going to do,” we said. Santa said, “I know, it’s very disappointing.” Then I said I will be the brave one and go out int that nasty storm. Santa came over to me and said “Are you sure? You want to go out in that storm?” I said “Yes, if it’s for all the boys and girls that have been good, I will do it.” “You make me so proud,” said Santa, bursting in tears. Then I said “Bring me Doner the royal reindeer.” As me and Doner thrashed through the snow, we have two more hours until Santa had to take off. I said then he started to go faster and faster. I put my glasses on him, and I said “These will protect your eyes from snow.” We made it and said “We are here” and when we opened up the door, they heard me. They looked at me like I was stupid, so did the lady. I walked over to the baby reindeer pins
and asked the lady, “How much is the baby reindeer?” She said “Which one? The red nosed one or the black nosed one?” “The red nosed one.” She laughed, “Ha! You can have him for free.” After I got back to the North Pole, instead of the South Pole, I said to the elves and Santa, “Come to the meeting room ASAP.” They came to the meeting room quick and got the new reindeer. I named him Rudolph. Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. “Good job,” said Santa. The other reindeers laughed and laughed at him. Santa said, “Enough!” I told him the song that the reindeers made up. “Rudolph the red nosed reindeer had a very shiny nose and if you ever saw him, you would even say it glows.” I would sing the rest of the song, but it’s sad. Then Santa said, “Let’s get the show on the road.” Blitzen interrupted, “He is leading us?” Santa said, “Stop being rude.” Santa got around the world in one hour.

Anyway, I bet you want to know what I would do, what I would feel like, and what I might have if I were Santa’s elf. Well, that’s basically why I’m here. So what I would do, well, I would probably make toys. The toys I would make ... lizards, animals, stuffed animals, big, huge, soft, squishy, plump, chubby Teddy bears. Also, I would play in the snow, of course ... and I would make snowmen, make snow angels, make tunnels, make forts, have snowball fights ... (I would win the snowball fights.) Well, I would feel very happy because I would be living with Santa! I would feel cheerful too because I would be with all my friends. Also, I would feel special because I am an elf! I lay in my bed, gazing up at the ceiling. I flipped on the switch on my bed stand. The ceiling became seethrough. I watched the snow and sleet pour down on the shop. I suddenly felt tired, so I went to sleep. When I woke up, I was soaked with the light ofthe sun. It’s Christmas Eve. We are putting up the tree for Christmas. When I went out, every elf was looking for the tree.” “We can’t find it,” said the gingersnap. “First the lights, then the tree,” I mumbled. The blizzard was now gone. Only a little snow was on the ground. I walked outside. I kept walking and saw someone taking the candy-cane crystal! So I started running toward him and saw that he had the lights, presents, and the tree!!! So I took them and told Santa, “Someone, I mean Smoky took the things.” So I went back out and took Smoky to the shop and made him

Wow, where do you live? Well, in the North Pole, yelled Santa. Will you help me? Do what? Well, let’s make toys for the kids all around the world. Like Africa, Asia, North America? I always wanted to go there. Yes, of course I will. Thank you, said Santa. So we made toys and painted – it was wonderful. He called me an elf. What’s that? Its kids who have pointy ears. They make presents every year, wow. So where’s Mrs. Claus? She got lost in the snow. She got lost and reindeers stepped on her. By Daisy Berthelson First place, Fifth-grade Virginia Grainger Elementary What would it be like to be Santa’s elf this Christmas? Working for Santa isn’t always so easy, Especially during the month of December (or as we elves call it) Oh-my-gollygoodness-gracious-we’re-all-going-to-DIEHey Rudolph-stop-eating-Santa’s-yogapants! Month. So I am going to tell you what it would like to be Santa’s elf this Christmas. Enjoy! You are a new recruit. It’s January 1st (oh by the way, there is only 1 holiday on the North Pole, Christmas.) You head to work shop, there you find Bob. He is really big, smelly and isn’t all that jolly. Bob helps the new recruits. You get right to work and by the end of the day you have successfully made 438 toys. The days go by and you begin to deal with more complex stuff, like popcorn poppers, iPods, laptops, WIIs, Nintendos, karaoke machines, life-size robots and sooo many ponies! As the days creep closer to December, things can get a little out of hand … The robots trying to learn to sing … Rudolph stressing out and eating Bob’s, have … massive popcorn explosions … and the ponies playing Mario Kart! (They beat me every time!). Before you know it, it’s Christmas Eve; the reindeer getting hooked up to the sleigh; wrapping up all the presents; calming down Rudolph before he gives himself a heartattack and telling Santa not to eat too many cookies (he never listens.). Finally we get all the toys into the sleigh and you wave goodbye. Finally you get a good night’s rest. Then you wake up and get some hot chocolate. You go to the workshop, but on the door reads: All elves will return to work tomorrow at 6 a.m. Merry Christmas

He knocked on the door in front of us and a little slot on the door opened. “Password?” He whispered something into the door keeper’s ear. I couldn’t make out what he said. Then I heard a door unlock and EERR. I put my head down. All I could see was a bright light. “You will get used to it.” My eyes finally adjusted to the brightness. “Hi, I’m Present. I’m the manager,” Present said confidently. “My name is Red,” I said nervously. I looked up from the floor. I froze as we were heading down the stairs. Not just because I was cold, it was beautiful. “Ha, it is magnificent, is it not?” “I’m speechless!” I answered excitedly. “You will be starting in the stuffing room. But first, you have to see Santa, so he can tell you what room to go to.” I was nervous from there on. There it is, the two big red doors. I could feel myself stiffen. “Good luck in there,” Present told me cheerfully. He knocked on the door and the door opened almost immediately. I walked slowly I looked down at the floor again. “Are you Red, my dear?” I nodded my head without looking up from the floor. “My husband does not bite…are you OK?” She stopped and touched my shoulder “My dear, do not be nervous, he will love

A teddy bear flew out of this machine. It landed right where I was standing. Then the pressure was on. I had to stuff the bear and do it fast. After a day of stuffing, I think I was stuffed, with stuffing that I swallowed while I was working. I went home knowing that you never know what to expect. But to just go with the flow. And that Mrs. Claus makes great cookies. The End.

In fact, I’m his right hand elf. Now this is an important role. I have to make sure every nice kid gets the present he or she wants. I also
manage the building elves, the reindeer and I’m the only one (other than the big man himself)that has access to the Naughty/Nice list. I can also edit it if needed. As you can see the north pole, at this time of year, is easily busier than an airport at peek hour! Hold on, I got a call from Santa. (Santa) “Hello Caleb, how’s my right hand elf doing.” (me) “Great, everything is on schedule” (Santa) “Great! Exactly what I expect from the best. Well just checking in. Bye.” (me) “Bye.” I always get those comments. At the moment it’s snowing like jingle bells and Christmas presents! If my calculations are correct it’s about 10 feet deep outside. (But we hold a world record of 20 feet!) Right now the consol shop has been working the jingles off their hats making PSs, X-boxes, WIIs and WII U’s. But as I said, w are really busy so far and I can’t write and work at the same time, so it’s time for me to get back to work. Bye! Sincerely,

Santa needs a cheerful elf because the more cheerful the less damage is done after watching the naughtiest kids in the world! But last year I watched the most soul crushing naughtiest kid in the whole entire world. So this kid named Dann almost got expelled from human school for life of course, not elf life because we live 200 years longer than you people. No offense though! And if you are wondering who does the nice kids, that’s Cane. He does the nice kid because he is the least cheerful and needs that Christmas boost! Well, that’s how it is 365/24/7 and double it for this. It’s been crazy and a lot of mayhem but are lucky tree always helps. The reason it’s our lucky tree because it is the only one in the world that survives up here.
