“A CUSTOMER SERVICE FACINGKIND OF GUY”

MEET ONYX CLIENT ADVISOR ZACH WAMSAT

ASSOCIATE SPOTLIGHT
ZachWamsat

Zach Wamsat knows a thing or two about luxury— and how to meet the needs of clients who expect the very best. The ONYX client advisor, who joined the luxury car company in February 2024, details his journey toward appreciating the finer things in life, and how hard work shaped him into who he has become today.

“I grew up working with my father and grandfather. I worked in a hardware store and did jobs like fixing screen doors. It was a valuable foundation,” Wamsat, born in Valley, Nebraska, reflected.

But while Wamsat was learning the value of hard work, he was similarly developing an appreciation for upscale lifestyle. He spent his free time playing golf at the Pines Country Club, which boasts a golf course renowned for pristine and undulating greens. Both experiences helped him better connect with people from all backgrounds.

Wamsat went on to attend college at lowa State university and finished his degree at the University of Nebraska Omaha before entering the hospitality industry after graduating in 2003. “While I was at UNO, I worked primarily in the service industry,” Wamsat shared. “I ended up as the food, beverage, and bar manager at Ironwood Golf and Country Club.”

Wamsat remained there for close to five years and found the experience invaluable. “It was a high-end country club, and the business taught me customer service, how to deal with different personalities, and problem solving on the fly,” he shared. “In retrospect, it was a good little boot camp for the car business.”

That transition into the automotive industry came when Ironwood permanently closed in 2008. By then, Wamsat had married his girlfriend, Amanda, and a career that involved being on-call “24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year around holidays and weekends when people take their leisure time” no longer proved as enticing to him as it did right out of college.

“It was a lot of long nights,” Wamsat confessed.

Since he had been driving past an auto dealership on his way to the country club every day, Wamsat decided to stop in and see if the business was hiring. It would prove to be a stroke of fate, “I spoke with the general manager, and he texted me to offer me a job before I even got back to my car,” he said.

Wamsat took to the car industry with ease. He excelled at his new position and within one year he was transferred to a luxury dealership, which included Lexus and Mer-cedes. “I spent 16 years there—11 with Mercedes,” he said.

Despite finding early success on the retail side of the business, during the Covid 19 pandemic Wamsat left the dealership for a corporate position with Ford Motor Company.

While he appreciated his new role, which involved business development, the nature of the work didn’t suit him. “It just didn’t fit me,” Wamsat confessed. “I am a more ‘customer service-facing’ kind of guy.”

He was pleased to find a client advisor opportunity at ONYX, where he had familiarity with the team and product offerings.

“I’ve been extremely impressed ONYX, and how unique it is,” Wamsat said, citing the four lines of vehicles—BMW, MINI Cooper, Jaguar, and Land Rover—that people encounter when they enter the dealership.

“Our clients have the opportunity to be exposed to four distinctly different luxury lines here,” he explained. “They might want a sports car and have a BMW in mind when a Jaguar catches their eye. The exposure to so many brands in one location is rare, and something I really love.”

Wamsat also loves how ONYX interacts with clients. “I can’t tell you how impressed I am with how customer-centric the atmosphere at ONYX is,” he shared. “From the availability of service loaner vehicles to new car owners having access to top-notch car washes—ONYX is really a onestop shop for the luxury automotive experience.”

It’s also a one-stop place of employment for Wamsat. Now a father of two daughters-8-year-old Sloane and 13-yearold Kenley—he spends many evenings and weekends attending various practices and competitions and appreciates having the flexibility to do so.

“I tell people, ‘I’m probably one of the few people who goes into the car business to work fewer hours,” he said with a chuckle.

ONYX AUTOMOTIVE

Always Award-winning

CL IENT BENEFIT

“ONYX, like the timeless black stone, represents our unwavering drive to be the new Standard of Automotive Luxury for the Omaha Metro area.

This mission statement, looming large as the ONYX Automotive brand ethos, conveys the company’s commitment to quality in all aspects.

Although a recent addition to Omaha’s automotive industry, having launched in 2019, ONYX continues to impress and deliver. ONYX Automotive has achieved its mission of excellence by delivering world-class vehicles while adhering to its belief in best-in-class client experience.

In just over four years, ONYX has performed its mission time and time again. In recent years, the dealership has won several awards, including the 2021, 2022, and 2023 BMW of North America Center of Excellence Award and the MINI USA Golden Bulldog Award, also in the last three years. These awards recognize “exceptional results in sales, service, and customer experience.”

The uniqueness of these recognitions cannot be understated. In each year, ONYX was the only dealership nationwide to earn awards for both BMW and MINI in the same year. Needless to say, accomplishing that feat three consecutive years lands ONYX in rarified air.

“It feels good to see the dedication our associates have toward client satisfaction be recognized,” said Drew Friesen, ONYX Director of Operations. “We all feel the experience at ONYX is something special, and awards like this reinforce our efforts.”

In addition to these prestigious recognitions, ONYX was listed as “Best of the Big O” in the Luxury Auto Dealer category by The Reader on their 2023 “Reader’s Choice Awards” list, and won Omaha Magazine’s 2023 “Best of Omaha” “Luxury Car Dealer” award in the Transportation category. ONYX staff, products, and services are consistently given 5-star ratings by customers on review platforms and social media.

“The manufacturer recognition means a lot, but the high review ratings from our clientele is truly the best indicator of our performance,” Friesen added.

ONYX is driven not just to be a retailer of choice, but also an employer of choice. As such, ONYX Automotive and parent company The H+H Group are proud recipients of the “2024 Best Places to Work in Omaha,” award, sponsored by the Omaha Chamber of Commerce and awarded by Baird Holm, LLP.

Navigating the Ultimate Adventure at Destination Defender Festival

WE MET GREAT PEOPLE, ENJOYED LISTENING TO MUSIC, HAD GREAT FOOD, AND LEARNED MUCH MORE ABOUT THE BRAND. IT TRULY SOLIDIFIED THAT THE LAND ROVER DEFENDER WAS THE RIGHT CHOICE FOR US.

DEF ENDER TRAILS
and Photography

As someone who has lived in the central plains for many years, I expect to hear a pronounced accent if I travel to south Texas. The twangs and thick drawls from the South are not just part of the stereotypes you hear from movie characters. Now, hearing a proper British accent in south Texas felt a bit unnatural. Land Rover flew in brand specialists from multiple continents to throw a party as grand as the Texas sky. Unnatural or not, three-fourths of my initial encounters at Destination Defender sported non-Texas accents.

For the second installment of Defender Trails, our adventure takes us deep into south Texas for Destination Defender 2023. Destination Defender is a weekend festival designed for Defender owners and enthusiasts that showcases the Defender lifestyle; the festival that my wife and I attended this past November was the third event of its kind. The first, held in Palm Desert, California, was named 4xFAR, which coincided with the relaunch of the Land Rover Defender to the US market in 2020. The second event was renamed Destination Defender and took place in 2022 in New York’s Hudson Valley region. Land Rover has yet to officially announce dates or details for the 2024 event, but given that Destination Defender also provides the venue to celebrate the Defender Service Awards, the 2024 Destination Defender should be a late fall affair.

The Iron Horse Ranch in Somerville, Texas, served as this year’s backdrop for Land Rover to host Defender enthusiasts from all over the world. For three days, Land Rover brought owners and guests together to demonstrate the Land Rover Defender’s remarkable abilities and “Embrace the Impossible” through curated activities. Land Rover participants had access to fly fishing, mountain biking, paddle boarding, kayaking, clay pigeon shooting, slacklining, and much more. Other activities included outdoor cooking demonstrations and multiple talks from people who have worked closely with Land Rover. The small group presentations were informative and directly related to how the original Defender came to the United States and where the parent company, Tata Motors, plans to take technology in the future.

Land Rover provided participants with many choices on how to experience Destination Defender. The event began on Friday and continued through Sunday evening. Guests could choose to buy a weekend pass or a particular day. For attendees participating in multiple days, Land Rover provided various on-site ac-

commodation options. Participants could bring and utilize ground tents, rooftop tents, or small campers for a small fee. A few hardy people chose to sleep in the back of their Defenders, and Land Rover also provided an option to use their equipment at a bump-in cost for those who opted not to bring their own. The next level was glamping in an outfitter tent set up by Land Rover’s team, which provided electricity, heat, and a bed. It was a popular option. My wife and I chose the hotel-style room that Land Rover personnel called “The Accommodations.”

As one would expect, Land Rover provided an opportunity to drive off-road. Using various obstacles and challenges, participants gained confidence with the Defender as they navigated off-camber driving, mud, and steep hills. Land Rover also set up clinics on recovering a stuck vehicle, both with and without an electric winch. Land Rover provided vehicles dedicated to various tasks for enthusiasts who didn’t want to use their own Defender for their activities. I counted no fewer than 70 Land Rover Defenders on site, brought as either static displays or for event participants to use.

Land Rover is very proud of its community service and supports charities in various ways, including grants and vehicles. Land Rover also used the Iron Horse Ranch to host the Defender Service Awards—Land Rover, along with other sponsors, honor charities from the US, Puerto Rico, and Canada that work in the community delivering humanitarian services. The gala celebration was held Saturday night with a gourmet meal in an opulent venue on the Iron Horse property.

Land Rover placed a priority on entertainment during these cool Texas evenings. Headliners like Aloe Blacc and Fitz and The Tantrums put on intimate and amazing shows. After Saturday night’s concert, the sky became the canvas as drones flew overhead, creating displays related to the Land Rover Defender. Lunch venues on the property had various acoustic soloists playing music to entertain guests.

My wife Erica and I had a smashing good time at Land Rover’s celebration of the Defender. We met great people, enjoyed listening to music, had great food, and learned much more about the brand. It truly solidified that the Land Rover Defender was the right choice for us. I can’t wait for Destination Defender 2024.

GOOD LOOKIN’ DUNDEE

A Rustic Haven for Brunch Enthusiasts

Story by Natalie Veloso // Photography by Bill Sitzmann

GOURMET

Midday on a Wednesday finds Good Lookin’ in Omaha’s Dundee neighborhood surprisingly abuzz with patrons, drawn by its positive reputation since opening its doors in 2021. The breakfast and lunch cafe serves a mix of elevated Midwestern favorites, creative healthy options, house-made pastries, premium coffee, and a host of other offerings. Staying true to their motto, “the best part of your day cafe,” my guest and I were greeted by the inviting aroma of fresh brunch dishes and warm smiles from the staff from the moment we stepped through the door.

The ordering process was as laid-back as the atmosphere itself; we simply approached the front counter at our convenience. It’s a low-pressure, no-rush way of dining that you can enjoy at your own pace— still, the service is fast and efficient, ensuring that you spend less time waiting and more time enjoying your food and company.

As my dining partner and I entered the spacious lounge to wait for our meals to be brought to our table, we were greeted by a modern yet cozy interior. Brick walls were adorned with colorful art, wooden tables and chairs exuded rustic charm, and an abundance of greenery added a refreshing touch to the space. The warm lighting, with lamps hanging above each table, created a cozy atmosphere that contrasted beautifully with the natural light streaming in through floor-to-ceiling windows as calm ambient music filled the room. During our visit, we noticed families, couples, solo diners, and large groups all enjoying their meals in this welcoming space.

Our Good Lookin’ dining journey began with a refreshing selection of beverages—we chose to save the mimosas for another day. The Strawberry Ginger Lemonade was a symphony of sweet and tangy, while the orange juice was a classic choice that never disappoints. My dining companion and I were eager to explore the varied menu, so we chose a combination of sweet and savory dishes to sample and share. For our main courses, we opted for the Breakfast Burrito and Ricotta Pancakes, along with sides of bacon, crispy potatoes, and scrambled eggs.

We first sampled the best-selling breakfast burrito, a hearty dish with scrambled eggs, sharp white cheddar, house chorizo, and tater tots wrapped in a flour tortilla. The well-seasoned chorizo added a satisfying kick, and the eggs were perfectly light. Accompanied by house aioli and served with a side of mild salsa, jalapeños, and red onion, each bite was a delightful flavor combination.

Eager to sample the Churro French Toast we saw online, we were disappointed to learn it was already sold out. It’s a reminder to arrive early, as popular items may run out quickly. Nevertheless, our disappointment was short-lived as we discovered that the Ricotta Pancakes, recommended by the staff member at the counter, were the true stars of the show. The stack of three fluffy pancakes were served with a dollop of whipped cinnamon butter and a side of maple syrup. Sliced strawberries, blueberries, half a peeled banana, and powdered sugar decorated the rest of the plate, while the ricotta added a subtle creaminess to the pancakes themselves.

13

No brunch would be complete without savory sides, and Good Lookin’ certainly delivers on that front. The crispy potatoes were seasoned to perfection with just the right amount of crunch, while the side of bacon—three thick slices—was packed with smoky flavor. The side of scrambled eggs, both light and airy, provided the perfect accompaniment to both meals. As for those with dietary restrictions, fear not—Good Lookin’ offers a variety of vegan dishes that are sure to satisfy.

One thing that set Good Lookin’ apart for us was its attention to detail. From a unique range of menu items to the thoughtful inclusion of condiments like salt, pepper, and hot sauce on every table, the experience is curated to ensure maximum comfort for guests. Self-serve stations on both sides of the lounge are stocked with anything else you may need, and the bar area toward the center of the room is both inviting and spacious— as a guest, it was clear every detail had been considered.

As you finish your meal and prepare to depart, the pastry case at the front is where you’ll find a tempting selection of bakery treats to satisfy your sweet tooth. Gift cards are available for purchase, and merchandise includes everything from sweatshirts to beanies to t-shirts.

An array of coffee options and an extensive bar menu left us intrigued and eager to return. Unfortunately, time constraints prevented us from indulging in these offerings during our visit, but it certainly gives us a compelling reason to come back and savor the additional delights this place has to offer.

Located at 50th and Underwood streets, limited parking is available on the south side of the building. While parking spaces may be sparse on a busy weekend, it’s a small price to pay for the culinary delights inside. Whether you’re looking for a leisurely brunch with friends, a cozy lunch date with a loved one, or want to grab a convenient meal on the go, Good Lookin’ has you covered.

Empowering Tomorrow’s Leaders through ONYX Automotive’s Mentorship Programs
DRIVING GOOD
// Images Provided
by Lindsey Hinchcliff-Crotty
LylandCole,CecilHaley

In this edition of ONYX Driving Good, I’m excited to share how ONYX Automotive strives to shape the leaders of tomorrow through programs centered around youth mentorship. As you will learn, these programs provide transformative experiences not only for students, but also for the mentors who guide them toward a successful career.

We’ve partnered with area schools and nonprofit organizations such as Avenue Scholars to recruit Omaha area students into our internship and apprenticeship programs. Mentorship is at the heart of our approach. Recognizing the importance of guidance and wisdom, ONYX Automotive connects students with seasoned professionals who generously share their expertise. Guiding students through these programs not only creates a vibrant community at ONYX, but also strives to make a greater impact by supporting students to be successful members of the Omaha community. Rob Ramsey, Fixed Operations Director at The H+H Group, has helped shape the student programs at ONYX Automotive. “There is potential in everyone,” Ramsey said. “It is our responsibility, from our experiences, to show each talented individual their potential and maximize their abilities.”

To bring this ethos to life, these programs have been designed to give students a firsthand look at the automotive industry and its myriad career opportunities. ONYX goes a step further by offering a comprehensive educational program through H+H University. This accredited program provides topnotch education and training for aspir-

ing Main Line Automotive Technicians. These programs are the building blocks to transforming not only a student’s career path, but also their life.

Trish Ruffino, Talent Acquisition Business Partner at The H+H Group, recruits students into these programs and works one-on-one with ONYX interns and apprentices. She witnesses firsthand how transformative these experiences can be for a student. “The mentor can not only play an important role in the student’s life, but also fulfill a relationship need,” Ruffino explained.

One of the students in ONYX’s program is Lyland Cole, a Service Technician Intern in the Jaguar, Land Rover, and Range Rover service shop. Cole learned of ONYX’s internship opportunities through the Avenue Scholars Intern Omaha Program. Alongside his internship, Cole is attending Metropolitan Community College and working toward his associate’s degree in Automotive Technology. “Cecil Haley [Service Technician at ONYX] has taught me so many things that will separate me being a mechanic from being a technician,” Cole shared. “Anything from diagnosis, double-checking your work, cleaning up your area, and the customer’s car where you worked—he has taught me to be proud of my work and that the income opportunities will follow.”

Avenue Scholars provides individualized support services that help Omaha students prepare for financially-sustaining, high-demand careers. Lindsay Decker, Senior Director of Communications & Development, shared: “The work we do is dormant without the

business community—partnerships are the lifeblood of Avenue Scholars. Our relationship with ONYX Automotive is unique because ONYX understands and wants to join us in taking on the responsibility of growing the next-generation workforce by providing meaningful workplace experiences and quality mentorship for students. Exposure to experiences and mentorship are key necessities when it comes to preparing students for their future careers.”

Rooted in the core value of “striving to be better today than yesterday,” ONYX takes pride in shaping the leaders of tomorrow and preparing them for success in the automotive industry. Throughout the year on our Driving Good blog, we will continue to showcase the inspiring stories of both our youth and mentors, featuring individuals who have benefitted from ONYX Automotive’s commitment to mentorship and education. They will share their personal experiences, detailing their journey from aspiring enthusiasts to accomplished professionals in the automotive industry.

I look forward to continuing to share with you the ways ONYX is striving to make a positive impact on the Omaha community through our Driving Good initiative. In the next edition, I will share more about our 2024 Driving Good campaigns and how we’re leveraging our associates and customers to Drive Good in Omaha.

Let’s continue to be a force for good in our community, together!

SWINGING INTO THE FUTURE

The Rise of Indoor Golf Simulators in Omaha

BradMorehouse,DaveUlferts

E NTERTAINMENT

You stand on the tranquil green, readying your shot. With a confident swing, you send the ball flying, its trajectory tracing against the blue sky before landing neatly on the green. As you play on, the realism is striking—every sound, every view feels authentic. The indoor golf simulator experience is so immersive that you could easily forget you’re not in the open.

As it turns out, Omaha’s golf scene has taken quite a tech-savvy turn. With their technological progression, indoor golf simulators offer life-like golfing experiences even while at the mercy of Midwest winters. This accessibility is one reason the golf simulator market was valued at $1.3 billion in 2021 and is projected to reach $3.3 billion by 2030, according to Straits Research.

In these climate-controlled havens, golfers can tee off without ever worrying about the elements. Still, the appeal of indoor simulators extends beyond just the cold season—they address other key limitations, like the inability to play at night or a lack of available reservation slots. The major selling point of simulators can be boiled down to one word: convenience.

With the flexibility to play at your own pace and schedule, you can bypass travel and tee time restrictions. The virtual experience is remarkably realistic, providing instant feedback on ball flight, distance, and accuracy for skill improvement.

Brad Morehouse and Dave Ulferts, owners of Golf Shack in Omaha, have taken note of these advantages. Their privatemembership simulator facility is tailored for golf enthusiasts in the corporate world. They rely on the Foresight Sports brand for cutting-edge simulator technology, employing two types of launch monitors: the GCHawk, a top-mounted option, and the GCQuad, also capable of outdoor use at driving ranges.

“When you play or practice on these simulators, it’s spot on,” Morehouse said. “If you hit the ball 250 yards, it’ll represent that on the screen. If you hit a bad shot, it represents that, too. I think the improved technology has increased the number of people wanting to try them out, because they’re actually useful.”

When Golf Shack first opened its doors, there were only a handful of similar establishments in town, Morehouse added. Now, he’s observed a surge in the number of facilities in nearly every town he visits.

“I think the pandemic really promoted indoor golf,” Ulferts noted. “There’s a

practical and a fun component to simulator facilities. One, many houses don’t have room for a simulator—my garage doesn’t have a tall enough ceiling. Two, simulators give you a much more flexible schedule; it’s a good use of your time.”

With Foresight technology, patrons at Golf Shack have the opportunity to refine their skills on a driving range with dedicated areas for chipping practice. Golf Shack also boasts training tools, two simulator bays, and a spacious 22 by 14foot putting area for precision practice.

“In the basement, we have dart boards, and soon to come—a Golden Tee,” Morehouse added. “The whole place has TVs; we have a lounge in the front with seating, refrigerators, and ice makers, and we have a back patio. Keeping our memberships small gives our private members the flexibility to come enjoy it all, whenever they want.”

While Morehouse and Ulferts certainly enjoy outdoor golf, they recognize unparalleled benefits in the indoor experience.

“The greatest advantages to me are the speed and times at which you can play,” Morehouse explained. “You can use the simulator at four in the morning, and you can use it at 10 at night. I can get through 18 holes in an hour versus two and a half on an actual golf course—and I don’t have to wait for slow people ahead of me.”

“I like that it’s as competitive as the real game,” Ulferts added. “From a personal standpoint, it’s important to us that people like our daughters use our site, and it’s critically important to our membership, too.”

Morehouse and Ulferts believe the future for indoor golf simulators is bright, agreeing that their current popularity is merely in its beginning stages.

“Simulators will continue to see exponential growth,” Ulferts said. “It’s fun for the user; it’s pretty cost effective. Golf simulators fit into every busy life. Bottom line— it’s super fun.”

Beyond dedicated facilities, other unexpected establishments around Omaha have also begun participating in the simulator trend. DJ’s Dugout, a locally-owned sports bar with seven metro locations, now features an HD indoor golf simulator at its downtown location on 10th and Capitol streets. Westside High School has embraced the trend with The Swede Center, a 1,600-square-foot space that stands as one of the finest public school indoor golf facilities in the country.

19
“SIMULATORS WILL CONTINUE TO SEE EXPONENTIAL GROWTH. IT’S FUN FOR THE USER; IT’S PRETTY COST EFFECTIVE. GOLF SIMULATORS FIT INTO EVERY BUSY LIFE.

BOTTOM LINE—IT’S SUPER FUN.”

DAVE ULFERTS

Furthermore, indoor simulators guarantee year-round revenue, making them an attractive addition for any business seeking to attract patrons and increase profitability. Each catering to various skill levels, numerous indoor simulator facilities around town await exploration, potentially offering the perfect fit for you:

BIG THINGS COME IN MINI PACKAGES

How the 2025 Countryman Breaks the Mold

FEATURE

Originally produced in 1959 by the British Motor Company, the MINI marque ushered in a revolution in space and fuel efficiency. Forty-one years later, the brand was acquired by BMW—in time, marrying MINI’s iconic look with the peerless performance of German engineering. The 2025 MINI Countryman is the latest, and perhaps the greatest, result of the merger.

The largest of the MINI fleet to date, the 2025 Countryman is both longer and taller than it’s predecessors, toeing the line between cross-over and full-size SUV. With a higher clearance rate and the sole model to support all-wheeldrive (AWD), the Countryman sheds some of its urban-cruiser identity to accentuate a more adventurous side of MINI—as comfortable to maneuver over woodland roads as it is to parallel park.

“EVERYBODY KNOWS THE MINI AS THE URBAN, ZIPAROUND CAR. NOW, THIS IS THE MINI THAT TAKES YOU OUT ON ALL OF YOUR ADVENTURES. IT’S A BLAST TO DRIVE.”
DAVID ARBAUGH

“They wanted to build a car that’s, ‘This is now the MINI that can take you outside of the city,’ right? Everybody knows the MINI as the urban, zip-around car. Now, this is the MINI that takes you out on all of your adventures,” explained ONYX MINI Sales Manager, David Arbaugh. “It’s a blast to drive.”

Though Arbaugh didn’t necessarily envision selling MINIs growing up, an episode of MTV Cribs featuring Good Charlotte drummer Dean Butterworth loading up his drum kit in a Cooper made for a lasting impression.

“I was probably 15, 16-years-old at the time, and my first car was on my mind. I was like, ‘Man, that’d be super cool to get a MINI, but I don’t even know if it was back in the United States then. It’s always been a car that’s intrigued me,” Arbaugh recalled.

This rock-n-roll, off-the-beaten-path image came into clear focus years later

when Arbaugh landed an opportunity to put the Countryman to the test in 2017.

“When they launched this new version of the Countryman, I went out to Palm Springs, California, for a launch event for a week. We drove up into the mountains and there was snow on the ground, and it was super cool,” Arbaugh said. “One of the things we did was an off road course and a comparison between the Subaru Crosstrek and the Countryman, and just really kind of beat up both cars on a course that they made.

“The biggest thing that stood out to me, was when you drove the MINI with confidence, it did what you wanted to do. And when you got into the Subaru, [which] has more of a quote unquote off-thebeaten-path reputation, it sounded like it was about to break. [The difference] was unreal.”

At time of writing, a standard edition of the 2025 Countryman has yet to be unveiled. However, the current ‘S ALL4’ and ‘John Cooper Works’ editions certainly offer some extra sizzle under the hood. With bold trim options, the latter more than doubles the horsepower (312) and halves acceleration (0-60 in 5.4 seconds) for a marginal dip in overall fuel economy. For those looking for a burst of speed and style, the John Cooper Works Countryman packs a wallop of high-octane British charm.

“It’s a BMW engine, and the reliability is second-to-none. It’s great from a owner’s perspective,” Arbaugh said. “And from a sales perspective, it’s a great thing to sit across from someone and honestly be able to tell them, ‘You’re looking at getting one of the most reliable cars on the road.’”

Beyond top-tier performance and the iconic exterior, the 2025 Countryman boasts a slew of updated tech and ergonomic features. A roomier interior and ample storage nooks ensures a comfortable, elegant ride—even for backseat drivers.

“That’s what sets it apart, is the size, right?” Arbaugh added. “People get into that iconic British, quirky, fun car that is a MINI but then still have room for the whole family; the dogs, the luggage in the back, grocery shopping […] My top sales person, Dean, drives a MINI and he absolutely loves it, and he’s like 6’5”. It’s a very practical vehicle.”

However, the most prominent new feature is the large, customizable OLED screen that dominates the dashboard. A modernized callback to the classic MINI speedometer, the 2025 Countryman’s boasts far more than a dial and needle. Powered by the ‘MINI OS 9’ operating system, a variety of “experience modes” provide vibrant, individualized experiences and a host of digital features behind the wheel. This even includes an optional voice-controlled virtual assistant named “SPIKE,” a stylized bulldog that’s certain to obey commands.

“It’s a big leap forward for the brand,” said Arbaugh of the upgraded tech. While the classic two-door hardtop and the MINI convertible fulfill a niche dictated by aesthetic and legacy, the Countryman’s broader utility offers prospective owners an opportunity to drive in timeless style regardless of daily demands, such as school pick-ups or long-haul roadtrips. Indeed, the Countryman is a fitting title— not only for its post-war British roots, but for the breadth of terrain and possibilities it’s capable of handling. Coupled with ONYX Automotive’s perks and dedication to customer satisfaction, Countryman drivers enjoy a royal pedigree.

“It performs as good as any car in that class can. Put it up against a Subaru Forester, Outback, Crosstrek and it’s just miles ahead as far as performance and tech,” Arbaugh said.

All things considered, there’s at least a few things a Midwesterner can easily appreciate about British culture: cool accents, fish n’ chips, pub crawls, and if brave enough, Chef Gordon Ramsay. And between the iconic design, revamped performance, and overall practicality, there’s yet another crown jewel to admire from this side of the pond: the 2025 MINI Countryman.

“It’s going to put a smile on your face,” Arbaugh affirmed.

ABOVE AND BEYOND ONYX AUTOMOTIVE’S INNOVATIVE TEAM BUILDING

ON YX SPOTLIGHT

When ONYX Automotive opened in Heartwood Preserve in 2019, it created an unparalleled luxury dealership featuring four premium brands: BMW, MINI, Jaguar, and Land Rover. Establishing such a best-in-class experience also required putting together a best-in-class team, one that could anticipate and meet client needs at every juncture. Ever innovative, ONYX approaches team-building by thinking outside the box.

Enter Tyler Novak of NCFIT Omaha, a gym dedicated to group-based strength and conditioning classes. Novak opened the business, located in the southwest part of the metro, in 2022 alongside brother, Scott, and brother-in-law, Easton Meadows.

“I was introduced to this kind of training in college in 2013,” Novak, 30, shared. “Scott and I used to work out together in my garage in Ralston.”

Describing that set-up as a “100-year-old chicken coop” that the brothers renovated, Novak recounted how they would make kettle bells out of cement and attach handles. “We were college kids balling on a budget,” he laughed.

Soon, friends started joining them for workouts, as did neighbors. Before they knew it, they had a regular group meeting every day to work out together. It wasn’t long before the brothers, along with Meadows, decided to make it official by opening NCFIT Omaha.

“Movements are functional, like squatting and box step ups, and getting up off the ground,” Novak explained. “Most days, we do some type of strength training.

“One of our mottos is being able to live freely and fully. Whether you want to do a 5K-run or go hiking or skiing, you want to be able to do those kinds of activities as long as you’re alive. You’re not limited or just trying to keep up with your grandkids.”

That kind of approach appealed to Drew Friesen, Director of Operations at ONYX Automotive, who shared on his ONYX profile: “I believe in coaching as a management style; after all, we run this ship together. I love helping my staff to become independent and achieve their personal goals, thereby achieving the company’s goals. Clients know that we will go above and beyond for them, cultivating an atmosphere of trust.”

When Friesen began working out at NCFIT Omaha in 2023, he saw improvement in his overall fitness. In addition to working with the gym’s trainers, he sought nutritional coaching from Novak’s wife, Jordan, who who runs Jordan’s Nutrition & Fitness Coaching and serves as NCFIT Omaha’s nutritional counselor.

“He just loved the results,” Novak remarked. “Drew approached us about bringing his team into the gym. He asked, ‘Do you guys do specialty group training?’ He wanted team building one time a month for his management team.”

The two settled on the second Tuesday of the month at 7:45 a.m. Novak designed custom classes that would lead to team building through partner work. “We focus on the team aspects,” he said. “There is something about going through a tough workout with people. You know what each other is feeling. It becomes a community.”

The response at ONYX has been overwhelmingly positive. “A handful of guys are already looking to join the gym full-time,” said Novak, who hopes to expand the bespoke team-building training sessions to other area businesses. “The feedback has been great—working out together takes the stress off.”

CHASING THE SANDHILL CRANES A Road Trip to Kearney, Nebraska

ROAD TRIP

As spring approaches and many are planning vacations and freshening up their homes, a certain wildlife species is already on a long journey away from the inevitable heat.

Their annual stop in Nebraska is a marvel of nature, just a few hours away from Omaha…

Every year, a million Sandhill Cranes land in the Platte River in Nebraska. Yes, experts estimate literally one million; that’s over 80% of the world’s population of Sandhill Cranes. A wildlife photographer’s dream, this spectacle is quite a sight to behold. This species is an undeniably beautiful one; their smooth grey feathers perfectly emphasize the bright red caps on their heads that provide a contrasting background for striking yellow-orange eyes.

It’s an opportunity to see these beautiful birds in action, following Mother Nature where she leads them each spring. Though the final destination is much farther north than midwestern America— typically cold locales like Alaska, Canada, and Siberia—the Platte serves as the perfect pitstop on a long journey.

According to a summary on visitkearney.org, “The Platte River Valley is the most important stopover on this migration. The river provides the perfect spot to rest, and the nearby farmlands and wet meadows offer an abundance of food. Without the energy gained along the Platte, cranes might arrive at their breeding grounds in a weakened condition—where food may be limited until the spring growing season begins.”

Among the shallow waters of the Platte, these long-legged birds can safely wade in and out of the stream and utilize the numerous sandbars that dot the river. This is the perfect resting spot, as the water provides protection from potential predators, like coyotes. If a threat approaches, the cranes can quickly notice and take flight.

“This often overlooked and underrated annual event is majestic, beautiful, inspiring and everything you need to look at Nebraska travel in a whole new light,” claimed LeAnna Brown of Well Traveled Nebraskan. “If you don’t have ‘See the Sandhill Crane Migration’ on your bucket list, you are doing yourself a disservice,” she averred.

Guided tours are available for this event, as well as maps and resources for selfguided tours. Guided tours take place at sunrise and sunset and are recommended, especially for first-time viewers, as participants will be able to experience the best views and learn about the majestic creatures they’re observing from trained guides. Be sure to bring your camera—you won’t want to miss one of the best opportunities for gorgeous wildlife photography! When planning your trip, be sure to consult the Q&A and Viewing Etiquette pages at visitkearney. org/sandhillcranes to learn what is encouraged, what is prohibited, and to ensure the best overall experience. With information on guided tours, suggested itineraries, maps, and answers to frequently asked questions, this website is the ideal resource to plan your spring birding trip!

But the fun doesn’t fly away with the cranes—this special event is indisputably a highlight, but there is much more to see and do. Turn your visit into a complete experience of Kearney! One of the most famous stops in the city is The Archway, an eye-catching bridge in which visitors can experience the history of the Platte River and the Oregon Trail. Lovers of vintage automobiles will want to stop by the Classic Car Collection that features over 200 restored historic cars, plus a recreated 1950s gas station. If art museums are more your speed, be sure to take advantage of the free admission to the Museum of Nebraska Art (MONA), the only museum exclusively dedicated to telling the story of Nebraska through the art of Nebraska. If you prefer basking in the beauty of nature, spend some time at the various parks, golf courses, recreation areas, and hiking trails Kearney has to offer. Visitors also often venture into new avenues such as axe throwing and horseback riding.

With ample hotel, restaurant, hiking and bike trails, and museums to choose among, this often overlooked city can offer a wholesome experience for nature enthusiasts and local history buffs alike.
