Family, faith and hard work Lessons learned in youth are keys to success for Union Bank & Trust executive BY MIKE WATKINS SPECIAL FOR UNION BANK & TRUST

M

alinie Staben spent many summers building homes alongside her father in the Louisville, Nebraska, area — doing everything from roofing to painting to swinging a hammer. Those years led to a background with a strong work ethic and handson experience in the homebuilding industry, as well as a desire to make a larger impact in the community. That experience with residential building became the foundation for her career in residential construction lending with Union Bank & Trust, where she is vice president of Omaha residential construction and in-house mortgage. “I gained a valuable work ethic from my parents,” Staben said. “They focused firmly on our family and faith, always maintaining ethics and remaining humble and open to learning new things. Those characteristics and qualities were a natural fit with the culture at Union Bank & Trust. “Spending my career working for a third-generation, family-owned bank, with a culture built on faith, family and community has been an amazing opportunity. Although, I don’t get to swing many hammers anymore, I am still able to make a direct contribution to both homebuilders and families fulfilling a dream.” As the leader of the Omaha residential construction team at UBT, Staben works directly with clients to help accomplish their goals. She and her team have the pleasure of providing financing to a variety of client types, from homebuilders growing their businesses, to individual consumers wanting to buy or build their dream home, to those wanting to build a long-term portfolio of residential investment properties. “We strive to provide the best financing structure to meet each client’s needs,” she said. “A home is often the largest asset that people have, so it’s really rewarding for me to be alongside them through

“I gained a valuable work ethic from my parents,” said Malinie Staben, vice president of Omaha residential construction and in-house mortgage at Union Bank & Trust. the entire process. It’s equally rewarding for me to know that I am also working with homebuilders so they can fulfill the dreams of their homebuyers.” Staben said the most enjoyable part of her work are the relationships she builds with all clients, especially with the residential builders. She gets to watch them grow their businesses and constantly formulate financing plans to help them manage their growth and achieve future success. “These are long-term relationships. I really enjoy getting to know my clients, their husbands and wives, families and future aspirations

because they are important to me,” she said. “My team’s goal is to build relationships and provide more than just transactional banking services. Union Bank & Trust has always focused on being customer focused and providing world-class service.” Both industry and community involvement are key to Staben. She has been an active member of the Metro Omaha Builder’s Association (MOBA) for many years. She currently serves on the Builder Foundation Board, which helps oversee the Builders of the Future program. The program works with area high schools to encourage and educate the next

generation of construction trade specialists. She’s also involved with the MOBA Professional Women’s Council, focusing on the philanthropic opportunities in the Omaha metro area. Staben is a Louisville Area Community Foundation board member and is actively involved with her local school. She earned her degree in business administration from the University of NebraskaLincoln and has been in the banking business for over 20 years — the last 16 with UBT. She and her family — a husband of 20 years and three children — continue to live in their hometown,

where they farm corn and soybeans. The kids raise and show dairy cows and are very active with 4H, school sports and activities. “We enjoy a great sense of a smalltown community,” she said. “Our hope is to raise children with the same focus on a strong work ethic, faith and family as we had growing up. “My work is full-circle, allowing me to continue my passion for the construction industry that I grew up in while working for a family-owned bank with similar values and a desire to give back to the community. We always strive to make a positive difference in the lives of our clients.”
