A quiet back lane. A palm tree swaying in the breeze. Telegraph poles alongside parked cars in front of Victorian terrace houses. These are iconic snapshots of innerSydney that showcase the alluring connection between the natural and urban environment - the focus of Bernard Greaves’ exhibition Streetscape.
These paintings of Bernard’s immediate daily surroundings are a visual journal of his years exploring and interpreting the suburban streets of inner-Sydney. Bernard finds inspiration within these paths, roads and parklands and investigates why the city’s Streetscape has a unique look and feel.
Bernard's practice is a celebration of the beautiful textures, colours and qualities unique to impasto oil painting. His use of palette knives allows for large amounts of paint to accumulate on the canvas, revealing the artist's subjects through a playful yet deliberate approach. These large chunks of paint draw attention to the material itself, reminding us that what we see is different to what is in fact there. By painting in this style, detail is reduced and the viewer must draw on their own memory to complete the scene in front of them.
Bernard applies the paint in this way to evoke a visceral response so that the viewer may want to see, touch and smell the pigment. The oil paintings draw the viewer even closer to an inspection of the surface and what is indeed the focus - paint.
Artist Biography
Bernard Greaves is an Australian artist currently based in Sydney. His artworks are a contemporary expression of colour, movement and texture. Each collection of works tells a narrative through the thick and instinctive application of oil paint, allowing the viewer to examine a variety of bold, playful and organic gestures.
Bernard comes to his art practice from a design background, having studied and worked in the Architecture and design field for a number of years before pursuing his art practice and completing his studies at the National Art School, Sydney in 2022.
