A NOTE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Dear friend of Olney Theatre Center, Before I came to Olney, I ran the National New Play Network (NNPN) out of a small office at Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company. NNPN is a consortium of new-play theaters that champions the development, production and continued life of new plays, and they do that via a variety of programs: connecting new plays and playwrights to producers is step one, and step two is encouraging those producers to take risks on new plays with generous grants. It was through one of those programs – the annual MFA Playwrights Workshop hosted by The Kennedy Center – that I met the extremely talented duo whose work you’re about to see: playwright Andrew Hinderaker and director Will Davis. They worked on Andrew’s play Colossal for a week with a full cast, and when they presented a semi-staged reading at the end of the workshop sessions, something happened that I’ve never seen before: the audience for the reading leapt to its feet with applause. Unless there’s a major star in the cast, audiences never give standing ovations at readings. Though as I think about it, Colossal’s workshop did have a major star in the cast, though one you’ve probably not heard of: Michael Patrick Thornton, who is also headlining our NNPN Rolling World Premiere production of the play. Mike and I knew each other years ago in Chicago. An extremely talented actor, Mike was struck with a spinal stroke in 2003 that left him comatose for three days, and paralyzed from the neck down. After years of grueling therapy, Mike regained some use of his upper body, and when he did, he returned to acting with a vengeance, forming his own theater company in Chicago, acting there and elsewhere, appearing on TV and in films, and becoming one of the theater industry’s best-known disability advocates. Andrew wrote this play for him, and though the story of the play isn’t Thornton’s story, once you see his performance you’ll understand why Andrew’s idea was so brilliant. I’m convinced that this play – and our production of it – will be one of the most talked-about new plays in the country this year. The best part of my job is getting the right artists together on the right project, and providing them with the resources to achieve new heights. I think we’ve done that with Colossal, and I hope the three upcoming stops in the play’s Rolling World Premiere – in Minneapolis, Dallas, and New Orleans – will benefit from our experience at Olney. But your responses to the production will play an enormous role in shaping the future of this play. So will you drop me a line at Jason@olneytheatre.org and let me know what you think of the show? I’ll pass your thoughts on to Andrew, Will, and Mike, so Colossal can soar to even greater heights. Onward!

DRAMATURGICAL NOTES “I just want to make sure I could tell my story the way I want to tell it. I just want to own my truth.” – Michael Sam, defensive end for the St. Louis Rams “Playing football is like smoking a cigarette: This isn’t the 1960s; everyone knows the risks…The fortune, the fame. The thrill of the crowd. That’s a lifestyle they can’t get anywhere else. Live like a king at 30, hobbled at 50, dead at 65? Not sure I’d take it, but many would. And do.” – CNN columnist Gregg Doyel For the 30th year in a row, football has been ranked America’s most popular sport. It lives at the heart of the nation’s culture, dominating the media for months at a time, inspiring millions of fans to paint their faces funny colors and scream at their television sets. “Everyone,” as Mike, the former college star from Andrew Hinderaker’s play reminds us, “loves football, even if they don’t know it yet.” On its surface, the multibillion-dollar industry seems totally incongruous with the themes and aesthetics usually presented on the American stage, so perhaps it is no surprise that theater and football have seldom collided. But as Colossal explores, this sport is visceral, cathartic, stunningly theatrical—qualities that the onstage players underscore with every tackle and swerve. And like any major cultural cornerstone, football is more than a form of entertainment; when looked at critically, it is a sociological Petri dish, perpetuating values and norms that are emblematic of much larger cultural phenomena. Many of these ideas have been cracked open recently, re-examining the physical, psychological, and social challenges that football’s hyper-masculine industry presents. As an enormous 2012 lawsuit reminded us, football asks its participants to put their bodies at risk with every play, resulting in hundreds of injuries each season. Even the NFL had to acquiesce, settling with a $765 million pledge to provide medical exams and research on the physical damage that was, until then, simply considered part of the job. The image of masculinity that football so vehemently promotes has also been under particular scrutiny of late. Now the first professional NFL player to make such an announcement, Michael Sam’s public declaration last August—“I am gay”—sparked conversations about sexual orientation and gender in professional sports. His broadcast marked a major turning point in how, where, and when our culture talks about gender and sexuality, and for the first time in the sport’s history, football’s presentation of masculinity was challenged on a national scale. Hinderaker’s play dissects these cultural questions on a profound yet intimate level. Football is not a villain in this play— despite the challenges it presents in Mike’s life, the virtuosity of his beloved sport provides him and his teammates with a beautiful, physical language. Hinderaker explores what makes the sport so hypnotizing, why it continues to draw players and viewers into its inherently brutal world. Colossal is, as its name suggests, an enormous story, jumping into national conversations with the brute force of a finely tuned college football team. A distinctly human story, Colossal begins where many plays end, examining the aftermath of trauma and the painful road to recovery. As Mike navigates through and beyond the consequences of his on- and off-the-field choices, his journey becomes much larger than that of a recovering athlete: his is a story of forgiveness, redemption, and healing—or as Coach explains, “Only when our bodies are broken does our work begin.” For more insight into the rehearsal process and play, visit our dramaturgy blog at www.olneycolossal.wordpress.com or pick up a context guide from the lobby. – Maegan Clearwood, Dramaturg

FROM THE PLAYWRIGHT I feel extraordinarily lucky to premiere this play in the D.C. area, because it was in Washington, DC that Colossal first took flight. In July 2012, I was invited by Gregg Henry and Jason Loewith to workshop Colossal at The Kennedy Center. The opportunity, co-sponsored by the National New Play Network (NNPN), came with a full week of rehearsal and the support of an extraordinary artistic team. But I had the audacity to ask for more. I told Gregg and Jason that I could only come to D.C. if two of my closest collaborators — Will Davis and Michael Patrick Thornton—came with me. To my delight and surprise, Jason and Gregg said yes. And then they kept saying yes. They said yes to helmets and pads. To full-contact football hits. To a huge cast, to a modern dance halftime show, to a play that was asking all of us to dream our definition of theater bigger. That week in D.C. was one of the greatest artistic experiences of my life. The point, I suppose, is this: Colossal only exists because so many people said yes when they had every reason to say no. Mike Thornton said yes to revisiting some of the most painful moments of his life. Will Davis said yes to stage directions like “Young Mike flies.” The NNPN said yes to a Rolling World Premiere of an “unproduceable” play. And all of you have said yes, just by being here tonight. It’s such a generous act, attending a play. Rarely these days do we turn off our phones, do we offer each other 90 minutes of our undivided attention. I thank you, and I promise you this: we will leave everything on the field, to honor your investment. – Andrew Hinderaker, Playwright

FROM THE DIRECTOR Colossal is an endurance sport. In this spare, stripped down, muscular world, we watch a battle of wills as they fight to the finish. We see Mike grapple with what it costs to lose his identity and attempt to forge a life in the wake of trauma. This push into the future and pull into the past is mapped on the bodies of all our players and timed and executed to a game clock ticking down the quarters play by play. Colossal is a play about fathers and sons, and collision and flight. A play about football, feats of strength, and fighting for every inch. This is a play about what happens when love knocks the wind out of you and tackles you to the ground. Our production speaks through the movement of the body. At every stage of the process we’ve made a commitment to developing this script in motion and up in space. The physical language is in meaningful dialogue with language of the text, it is a visceral kinetic feat of performance. It is my true pleasure to welcome you to this world premiere production with Olney Theatre Center. I’ve had the privilege of working on this piece for the last three years with Andrew Hinderaker, and in that time we’ve put a lot of different football gear on a lot of different bodies through the generous support of the folks and institutions who have championed us. It’s been a wild ride and we’re both deeply grateful to land here with Olney Theatre Center. I am immensely proud of our team who are bringing this piece to life with so much sweat and muscle and such virtuosic energy and grace. – Will Davis, Director

WHO’S WHO - CREATIVE Carson Kreitzer, Sam Shepard, Dael Orlandersmith, and many more. He is a three-time grantee from the NEA for Artistic Excellence, a recipient of support from the Rockefeller MAP Fund and MacArthur’s International Connections Fund, and a TCG New Generations Future Leaders grant. Jason joined Olney as Artistic Director in 2013 after serving four years as Executive Director of the National New Play Network. Debbie Ellinghaus (Managing Director) joined Olney Theatre Center in August 2014. Prior to her appointment at OTC, she was Director of Development for the College of Arts and Humanities at the University of Maryland, College Park, where she closed significant gifts that helped to advance student scholarship and academic programming. From 200511, Ms. Ellinghaus was the Senior Associate Director of Development at Yale School of Drama/Yale Repertory Theatre in New Haven, CT, where she was part of a university-wide campaign that raised more than $3.8 billion and included transformational gifts for Yale Rep from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and the Robina Foundation, which established the Binger Center for New Theatre. Additionally, she raised funds for scholarship, theatrical productions, and facilities. In her role at Yale, Ms. Ellinghaus provided mentorship to MFA candidates, many of who are now leading major theaters across the country. Previously, Ms. Ellinghaus was Director of Development at Off-Broadway’s Jean Cocteau Repertory Theatre. She holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Speech Communication from the University of Maryland, College Park, and is a graduate of New Actors Workshop, a professional theater training conservatory founded and led by Mike Nichols, George Morrison and Paul Sills. Ms. Ellinghaus currently chairs the Downtown Arts and Culture Commission in Columbia, MD, an organization that works closely with Merriweather Post Pavilion. She also sits on the boards of the Inner Arbor Trust and the Howard County Board of Health. A native of Columbia, MD, she lives in Fulton with her husband, Andrew, and two children, Madeline and Griffin. The National New Play Network (NNPN) is the country’s alliance of non-profit professional theaters that champions the development, production and continued life of new plays. Since its founding in 1998, NNPN has commissioned more than twenty playwrights, provided nearly thirty theater-makers with paid residences, and supported over 100 productions nationwide through its innovative Continued Life of New Plays Fund, which creates “Rolling World Premieres” of new plays. Hundreds of artists have gained employment through these efforts. In addition to the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, NNPN receives support from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, the Harold and Mimi Steinberg Charitable Trust, the Shubert Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, Venturous Theater Fund of the Tides Foundation, and the Community Foundation for the National Capital Region. The Network is comprised of 29 Core Members, who pioneer and implement collaborative new play strategies and a growing group of Associate Members, who disseminate the Network’s programs and strategies nationwide.
