Explore a Creative Approach to Retirement

Promoting creative retirement since 1988

On the Road to a Creative Retirement Exploring a Meaningful Retirement Let us help your members explore how to create a meaningful retirement that matches their values and priorities at the On the Road to Creative Retirement program. We invite you to consider questions such as: When should I retire? How will I spend my time after I stop or reduce my work? How will I find purpose and meaning after I retire? How will my identity change in retirement? How will retirement affect my relationships with family and friends? How do I investigate work and volunteer opportunities?

The engaging On the Road to a Creative Retirement will help participants begin to identify their desired personal goals in retirement. In the process, they will gain valuable insights and inspiration to create tangible next steps.  The On the Road to a Creative Retirement focuses on the non-financial aspects of life’s second half; decision-making exercises and thought-provoking discussions reveal stimulating opportunities. On the Road to a Creative Retirement provides a spark for participants to begin envisioning a retirement as a time of life to look forward to rather than avoid.

What is On the Road to a Creative Retirement? On the Road to a Creative Retirement was developed by OLLI at UNC Asheville (formerly the NC Center for Creative Retirement), a nationally recognized lifelong learning institution founded in 1988 to provide opportunities for people to thrive in life’s second half. In 2002, OLLI created the innovative and unique Paths to Creative Retirement program. Over the years, Paths has helped hundreds of participants turn apprehension about retirement into excitement through thought-provoking exercises and engaging discussions (see testimonials on next page). OLLI brings the wisdom of over a decade of non-financial retirement planning to the On the Road to a Creative Retirement program. Transform your members’ anxieties about their next chapter of life - retirement - into a reassuring learning process. On the Road to Creative Retirement Content, Format & Outcomes

On the Road to Creative Retirement includes three options that are available to your organization. • Short presentation - This is a brief presentation by a trained facilitator of the non-financial issues one can expect to arise upon retirement and will get participants thinking about how they might plan for retirement in a more intentional and comprehensive way. Speakers can answer questions about the Paths to Creative Retirement workshop offered by OLLI at UNC Asheville as a resource if participants want to develop their planning further. • 2.5 Hour Workshop - This short workshop includes activities and exercises designed to help participants begin to identify and explore individual issues and goals. Participants will leave with a jump start on thinking about these important issues not only in a broad way, but also how they might manifest in their own lives. Participants will also receive a resource list to help them pursue their own research. • Half Day Workshop - This workshop expands on the activities and exercises of the 2.5 hour workshop to help participants begin to craft an individual retirement plan. Facilitated discussions and exercises expand participants’ understanding of the issues and help them develop some strategies for their own retirement. Participants will begin to visualize how to create the retirement they want.

Paths

“I will forever be eternally grateful for the thought, wisdom and structure that went into the Paths program when I attended and for all the facilitators who helped me see myself differently and craft my roadmap for the future.” “I view ‘Paths’ as a program that got me going on a path. Taking steps and knowing that you have more flexibility to learn, experiment and change course as you start the transition...The support from all the participants and the facilitators was great. It allowed me to sort through my issues and...take this next step ‘lightly’ and ‘joyfully’. I guess fear was holding me back and I was dreading not working (what was I thinking...it has been great not to be scheduled from dawn to dusk!) “I came into the course dreading retirement and loss of my identity, and left with the realization that there was a life after work. 3 1/2 retirement books later, long planning discussions with my wife, and bucket lists have me asking my boss to let me retire before my contract expires later in the year.” “I now have a retirement plan. I will not just be retiring some day. I will be retiring TO a life I am creating.”
