Olivet Nazarene University’s social work program has had another exciting year. Photos and stories in this report will tell you about the many great things our students and faculty are doing.
Faculty Update Student News
Underlying all that they are doing are the many program improvements we are making. Our vision is to be the very best undergraduate social work program in the region. We continue to work hard to improve the way we teach competencies that will give our students more opportunities to learn and practice social work. Creating the best possible experience and education for our students is our goal.
Diakonia Corner 2013 Graduates Upcoming Events Scholarship
This year, Diakonia, the social work club, revised their vision and refocused their energy to not only reach out to the community, but also to provide professional development opportunities for students. Professor Amber Residori has joined us to teach social work courses, and she brings another dimension of expertise to the program. We are discussing the possibility of offering a M.S.W. program at Olivet and plan to do a feasibility study this calendar year.

Faculty update Dr. Houston Thompson, Ed.D., M.S.W., department chair Dr. Thompson joined the ONU faculty in 2006 as the chair of the Department of Social Work and Criminal Justice. He is a Licensed Social Worker in the state of Indiana. In 2012, Dr. Thompson co-presented with Breanne Bambrick, a junior social work major, at the North American Association of Christians in Social Work on the topic of “The Collaboration of Faith and Social Work in Creating a Gateway of Helping.” He is currently working on two research projects: one related to generational trends in philanthropy, and the other on conflict management for faith leaders.
Amber Residori, M.S.W., associate professor Professor Residori joined the faculty this spring semester. She is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the state of Illinois, and has 20 years of experience working with severe emotionally and behaviorally disordered adolescents. She has extensive administrative experience, and most recently has opened two inpatient acute psychiatric programs for adolescents presenting as an immediate danger to self and others.
Barry Lee, M.S.W., associate professor Professor Lee joined us in 2008 after a career in clinical social work. He holds designations as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and a Certified Alcohol and Other Drug Counselor. He is entering his final year in the Doctor of Clinical Psychology degree program at the Adler School of Professional Psychology. He serves as the faculty sponsor for Diakonia, and has provided direction and support in the updates of the club this year.
Rachel Guimond, A.M., assistant professor Professor Guimond joined us in 2010 after working for several years in the social work field of aging. She completed her Masters of Social Work degree at the University of Chicago School of Social Service Administration, and is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the state of Illinois. This year, she became our field education program director and began work on her Doctorate of Social Work degree at the University of Tennessee.

STUDENT NEWS Phi Alpha inductions
Faculty and students present at national conference In October, students Breanne Bambrick and Gabrielle Kirby attended the North American Association of Christians in Social Work Conference in St. Louis, Mo. Both volunteered as student workers at the conference. Breanne and Dr. Houston Thompson co-presented on the topic of “The Collaboration of Faith and Social Work in Creating a Gateway of Helping.”
Practice III class: A hands-on learning experience In October, 41 social work seniors visited Shepherd Community Center in Indianapolis, Ind., to learn more about community development. The trip included a guided tour around the near east side of Indianapolis. Several presenters shared with them about the many facets of community development to eliminate the effects of poverty.
Annual continuing education event On March 1, we hosted the 3rd Annual Continuing Education Event. More than 80 community social workers and social work students gathered to hear a presentation by Michael LaReau and Debbi Baldauff on the ethical issues surrounding dual relationships. A lively conversation ensued about the role of emerging social networking technologies and professional boundaries. A panel discussion featuring social work professionals with Peter LaMotte, Kari Alderson and Amber Residori looked at the specific issues facing the fields of medical, school and clinical social work.

Since 2002, ONU has been the Iota Alpha chapter of the Phi Alpha Honor Society. The Phi Alpha serves to “provide a closer bond among students of social work, promote humanitarian goals and ideals, foster high standards of education for social workers, and invite into membership those who have attained excellence in scholarship and achievement in social work.” On April 11, 2013, we inducted 14 social work juniors and seniors into Phi Alpha. These are students who have exhibited high standards of academic achievement and personal integrity. Dr. Dennis Crocker, dean of the School of Professional Studies, addressed the students and their families, and encouraged them to continue their efforts for Christian service through excellence. These students will enjoy lifetime membership in the society. Congratulations!

One Hope United Christmas party Santa joined several of our social work majors during a Christmas party for children. Every year, Diakonia hosts a party for foster children who are a part of One Hope United in Kankakee. Following the party, they deliver gifts to One Hope United for distribution to the children on Christmas Day.

Ashlan is finishing her field placement this summer. After graduation, she plans to pursue a master’s degree in social work and business administration. She hopes to utilize her education in both fields to contribute her best to macro-practices and administration of an agency. She would like to thank her family for their support, encouragement, prayers and continual love over the years. She especially wants to thank her parents and two sisters for the blessing they are and have always been in her life. Sarah is finishing her field placement this summer. After graduation, she plans to pursue both a M.S.W. degree and Arabic classes to become an overseas missionary working with child welfare in the Muslim world. She would like to thank her parents. She would not have made it through without them — and the long calls to her mother that began in tears but ended in laughter, and reminders from her father “not to take everything so seriously.” She also thanks her friends for all of their encouragement and for making college a blast. Most of all, she thanks God for saving her, inspiring her to action and carrying her every step of the way.

After graduation, she plans to work with young adults or juvenile victims, encouraging them to build their self-esteem. She later plans to work toward an M.S.W. degree. Social Work Scholarship A few years ago, an anonymous donor funded the start-up of a scholarship for social work students. Each year, this scholarship has grown and blessed several students with a scholarship. Donations to the Social Work Scholarship fund are open to anyone who wants to bless social work majors.
