‘Never heard of it … ’ By John C. Bowling ’71/    ’72 M.A./’06 D.Div. University president

hen I was 18, I was sitting in the high school cafeteria when one of my friends sat down and announced to those of us having lunch, “I have been accepted for admission by Ohio State University. Just think,” he said, “that’s where I will be this time next year.”   Then he turned to me and asked, “John, where are you going to college?”   I replied, somewhat hesitantly, “Uh, I think I am going to go to Olivet Nazarene College.”   “Never heard of it,” he said with a dismissive tone and quickly went on with his conversation.   His comment, and the rest of the conversation about how great it was going to be for him to be at a large state school, filled me with a measure of doubt concerning my choice of Olivet. Should I be going somewhere else? I wondered.   But those doubts quickly dissipated, for once I arrived on the Olivet campus, I knew I had, indeed, made the better decision.    Here I found a school where the professors and staff cared about getting to know me. My friend had little opportunity to have any personal contact with his teachers or university leaders; he was only one of tens of thousands of students.    Here I found a university where, from my first year on, I studied with women and men who had the highest academic credentials. My friend’s classes during the first year or two were primarily staffed with teaching assistants and graduate students.    Here at Olivet I dis covered a school with a clear sense of mission and a solid set of values.    And because I attended Olivet, I became part of a worldwide fellowship of

Olivetians who have enriched my life beyond measure.   By way of definition, to be an “Olivetian” means you have attended Olivet Nazarene University. But in reality, it’s much more than that; to be an Olivetian is to carry with you the marks of this University.    It means you have submitted yourself to rigors of a fine academic program.    It means you have learned to live in community and assume the responsibilities that are part of life together on this campus.    It means you have learned to lead and to serve.    And to be an Olivetian, in the best sense of the term, means that you have developed a personal faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and are striving to live your life in response to Him.

w

Olivet graduates are found in nearly every walk of life: teachers, lawyers, dieticians, accountants, bankers, social workers, writers, preachers, missionaries, nurses, doctors, musicians, scientists, artists, historians, computer specialists, professors and counselors and so on. Olivetians are black, white, Asian, Hispanic; we are African, Indian, Mid-Eastern, European, American, Latin American, Russian and more.   Olivetians are male, female, young, middleaged and aging. Not all Olivetians are Nazarene; we are Baptists, Catholics, Methodists, Wesleyans, Lutherans and more. The Olivet family is diverse in many ways and yet united across the spectrum by our common experience at Olivet. Our lives are stitched together with the purple and

gold thread of our shared experiences at ONU.   To be an Olivetian means one is given an open door, an opportunity to use the resources of this wonderful school to help develop as a person, to prepare for a career or profession and to learn to live in harmony with our Creator. Olivet is a place where futures are determined for both time and eternity.    This summer, at the General Assembly of the Church of the Nazarene, Olivetians from around the world and across the generations will gather for a great Alumni and Friends Breakfast. We will celebrate the mission of the University and bear witness that attending Olivet Nazarene University has made a forever difference in our lives — even if some folks have “Never heard of it … .”

Law By Bill Swallow ’04 Assistant State’s Attorney, Cook County, Ill.

T

he first day of law school seems very similar to my first day of school as a freshman at Olivet. Everyone gathers a little early to get good seats, and then they sit nervously in a room full of strangers. The professor may even begin with an ice-breaker, intending to put everyone at ease.   Then, the professor starts class — and that is the end of the similarities.   Gone are the days where you can set your own schedule. Gone are the days where you could get by with more play than study the night before. Here are the days where four or five hours of preparation may not be enough.   But on my first day of law school, I was considerably more prepared to face the rigorous challenges because I had just spent four years at Olivet.

I was prepared because of the faith Olivet helped cultivate and the class work that I had done.   The first thing that cannot be overlooked nor understated is the firm foundation of faith Olivet promotes and encourages. Four years of chapel, revivals and Bible studies can aid anyone in pursuing their relationship with Christ. And the people you are with — the other students and professors — foster an atmosphere that can cultivate and produce a solid Christian foundation.   This foundation is what you can rely on when time gets tough. Law school is one of the most intellectually exhausting ventures one can go through in life. There are days when you have been studying twelve hours for a final, and you are exhausted. There are days where everyone seems to know more and have better prospects for the future. At those times, I had my faith to fall back on, to help me regain my bearings. Strengthened faith was easily the most important thing I took

from Olivet, and it made grad school that much easier.   The second aspect that I took from Olivet was the ability to analyze and argue. To be a good lawyer, you must be able to analyze the problem in a situation and then argue your solution. As a political science major at Olivet, I was constantly engaged in reading, analyzing, and then arguing my position in either a ten-page paper — the staple of the political science curriculum — or in a classroom discussion. Those papers and those classroom discussions were invaluable as I began grad school and as I was constantly forced to find and defend my position. This is a skill developed over time, and after four years at ONU, I was capable of handling myself in any situation.   The first day of law school may not have seemed all that different from my first day as a freshman. However, as a result of the four years I spent at Olivet, I was prepared and able to handle anything that law school could hand me.

TODAY, THERE ARE APPROXIMATELY 32,500 OLIVET ALUMNI LIVING IN 50 U.S. STATES AND 60 WORLD AREAS. WHETHER THEIR CHOSEN FIELDS ARE IN LAW, MEDICINE, BUSINESS, EDUCATION, MINISTRY OR A MYRIAD OF OTHER PROFESSIONS, OLIVETIANS MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THE WORLD FOR CHRIST AND HIS KINGDOM.

O

riginally, I am from Chicago, and I have a love for urban communities. So now that I have completed my nursing studies, I’m excited to be at the crest of a new chapter in my life. God has blessed me with a full-time job at a Christian clinic on the west side of Chicago!   Olivet has been such a blessing to me. It was at ONU that God continuously provided for me financially, showing me over and over again that He is faithful. I would be anxious about how the school bills would be paid, not knowing what to do. Then, so often, I would receive random

of growing and even hurting.   While in college, I also had the opportunity to participate in volunteer health care work in the Dominican Republic and South Africa. These experiences have opened my eyes to the depth of needs around the globe. After I gain experience in the United States,

my goal is to travel overseas in medical ministry, using my gifts, talents and skills to improve the quality of life for individuals in impoverished areas.   I am eager to see where the Lord leads me as I follow Him. God makes me smile. He is so good!

scholarships that I did not even know I qualified for! I got to know the staff of the financial aid and student accounts departments pretty well.   In addition, Christian mentors in the Olivet faculty challenged me to give God entire control of my life and to dive into His will. God revealed a lot of fear I have about just surrendering my plans to Him. I had dealt with past hurts and what I call “low self-esteem” in the body of Christ — thinking I really couldn’t offer anything. When I did surrender, I was able to have the most amazing adventures and courage through really difficult times.   Through Olivet, I’ve met amazing friends who have held me accountable to live genuinely for Christ. They have loved me through these times

rom an early age, I have always tried to be involved in everything that I could. So when I arrived at Olivet in fall 2007, I was ready to do and experience more than ever before.   Prior to my arrival, I had heard about ONU music ensembles. I thought Testament Men’s Choir and Proclamation Gospel Choir would be fun, so as soon as I stepped foot on campus, I did what was necessary to be involved in both. These two activities, above all others, really show me what ministry is. We meet so many people during our travels, and we see firsthand how God can use song to bring oth ers peace and hope. When God shows His power in a tangible way, one can’t help but be changed.   Beyond music, I really enjoy business formatted teams. I chose to become part of Olivet’s marketing club my sophomore year in order to get basic and useful knowledge of marketing at the ground level.   Being a person of multiple ethnicities, I was intrigued that Olivet had a MultiEthnic Relations Club. I went to the informational meeting my freshman year and have been actively involved as a member since, including being an officer for the past two years. For me, this club is an opportunity to reach out to the campus and remove any ignorance, stereotypes, and preconceived ideas students may have about one another. MERC helps to create cultural awareness and will ultimately create a more unified student body.   Understanding the need for men of integrity, character and unmovable standards in the Church and in the world, I am also involved with Men’s Residential Life. The MRL council looks to help the men of ONU become people who will stand up and make godly decisions — even when it is not the easiest thing to do.   Life gets busy, and I often feel like I’m being pulled every which way. However, I can’t look at any one thing I’m involved in as more important than another. In the end, each club and activity is a ministry and a chance to make God real in the life of another.   In 1 Corinthians 1:31, I find words to live by: So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.

WITH MORE THAN 70 CLUBS, ORGANIZATIONS, MUSICAL ENSEMBLES AND INTRAMURAL TEAMS, OLIVETIANS ARE NEVER LACKING FOR THINGS IN WHICH TO GET INVOLVED.

THE BIGGEST THINGS I RECEIVED AT OLIVET WERE LEADERSHIP TRAINING AND SOUND THEOLOGICAL TRAINING.” – Kedric Jones

IN high school, I never really thought I would go to college.

I felt called to full-time ministry my senior year of high school, but still didn’t plan on obtaining any advanced degrees. Then I began to realize how meaningless my life would be if I didn’t receive a higher education. So with less than one month before the start of classes, I enrolled at Olivet.   I took out a loan for my first year at Olivet, but I had no idea how I was going to pay for the rest of my education. So my sophomore year, I “tried” the ROTC program for financial reasons.   My first semester of ROTC, I hated it. I didn’t like the discipline, the physical training, or the time I had to give to it. I prayed to God and decided not to do it. Ironically, it was when I made the decision not to participate in ROTC that I fell in love with the program.

w

I loved the discipline, the physical training and all the other leadership training. When I stopped doing ROTC for money, I began to do it for God.   My sophomore year, I also had a revival experience. Through prayer and fasting with my friends, we experienced a strong spiritual revival — and what I later came to understand as entire sanctification.   I felt compelled to study the doctrine of my experience. What I learned was that what I had experienced, the Church of the Nazarene has preached for more than 100 years. At this point, I devoted myself to the Church of the Nazarene.   The biggest things I received at Olivet were leadership training and sound theological training. I got the leadership training primarily through ROTC, probably one of the most powerful training programs at Olivet. It will be a great asset to me in my future, no matter where I end up.

Heard weekly by more than 100,000 listeners throughout Chicagoland, Shine.FM is the only Christian

hits radio station in the top three markets (Los Angeles, New York and C hicago). ❱ In addition, Shine.FM is streaming online to 71 countries on six continents monthly, and now offers a 24/7 online worship channel featuring praise songs from top Christian artists. ❱ Shine.FM is also partnering with Africa Nazarene University and World Mission Broadcasting to launch Shine-Africa.

Students interested in the performing arts benefit from a thriving theatre program under the leadership of Jerry Cohagan, who gained national

recognition as one-half of the Christian comedy team Hicks & Cohagan and who has authored more than 20 books of dramatic sketches and plays. ❱ Each year, Olivet presents three mainstage productions — a fall play, a winter musical (in collaboration with the Department of Music) and a student-directed spring play — along with various other performance opportunities.

Olivet’s School of Graduate and Continuing Studies is truly without boundaries. Currently, there are 116

separate cohorts meeting in churches, hospitals, schools and businesses throughout the Chicagoland area, plus several online courses. ❱ Olivet also has a master’s in professional counseling program in Hong Kong.

Students interested in pursuing a career in medicine find superior training at Olivet. Of pre-med students who apply to

medical school, an average of 93 percent are accepted (vs. the national acceptance rate of 46.1 percent), and 97 percent of last year’s nursing students passed state boards on their first try (in comparison to an 87 percent pass rate nationally).

at the

I was raised in the Church and was a ctively involved in every church activity. However, junior high began to change my life; it opened my eyes to the idea of beauty and perfection. I found myself watching what I ate at such a young age and comparing myself to others around me. I was working out twice a day, drinking countless water bottles, and barely eating any of my meals. These habits continued once I began high school.   My sophomore year of high school, I began hanging out with an older crowd, which brought me into the drinking scene. My mother told me that my personality began to change — which we fought about for quite some time — and I made countless mistakes. My image was more important to me than a personal relationship with God.   When it came time to go to college, I attended a university in Pennsylvania where I could double major in secondary education and dance. I began drinking again, and the dance department emphasized watching my weight — an ongoing struggle for me. I knew I was filling a void with all of the wrong things, but continued to live the life of sin.   Finally, I couldn’t take my unhealthy eating habits, disloyal friends and careless lifestyle any longer. So I applied to two secular schools where some of my close girlfriends attended. I never thought once to pray or ask God for guidance.   The first semester of sophomore year was almost over, and I was frightened because I had not heard back from either university. When I called to inquire why, both schools reported they had lost my transcripts and that it was too late to

center

transfer. I was devastated. That night I decided to pray for guidance for the first time in about a year-and-a-half.   The next morning I woke up, and Olivet Nazarene University popped into my head. I wasn’t sure about this particular thought, but called anyway. I spoke to a nice gentleman who told me to send my transcripts. Shortly after, he called me

I AM PROUD TO SAY THAT I FOUND MY BEST FRIEND, JESUS CHRIST, AT OLIVET NAZARENE UNIVERSITY.” – Kelly Brillhart

back to tell me, “Kelly, you have been accepted into Olivet Nazarene University with a $5,000 scholarship for grades. Would you like to sign up for your classes now or later?”   This entire situation was surreal. A week later, I packed my bags and moved home. I didn’t understand why I was doing this, but knew God was at the center of my decision. God began working in my life without me even knowing it.   I was placed in a dorm with a few amazing girls, and I met my best friend who showed me the true meaning of friendship and has continued to hold me accountable in many areas of my life. F urther, I dated a couple guys, who showed me the difference between dating Christians and nonChristians. As friendships grew, I became a happier

person all around. I saw changes I never thought were possible.   Olivet has opened my eyes and given me the opportunity to be part of a wonderful Christian community. Whether it was from a prayer at the beginning of each class or attending weekly chapel, Olivet constantly reminded me that God should be at the center of my everyday life.

Life has been a challenge. However, I am thankful for all my experiences. Even when I chose my own path and stumbled along the way, I knew my one and only Savior would be at the end to pick me up. My favorite Bible verse is Jeremiah 29:11: “‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘Plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’”

FAST ››› FACT

I know the lifestyle I want to live and the most important relationship I want to keep. I want to be the best woman of God I can be. I am proud to say that I found my best friend, Jesus Christ, at Olivet Nazarene University. For that, I will be forever grateful.

Every week, Olivet students attend two of three chapel services offered, so that during any given service, approximately 25 percent of the student body is missing. The new chapel will hold 3,059 seats, allowing ONU students, faculty and staff the opportunity to gather and worship as one community for the first time since 2003.

One chapel. One chair. One moment. Changes everything. Behind every one of these names, there is a student. And during any given Chapel service, one-quarter of these students are missing because there is simply not enough room. The new Chapel will provide us the opportunity to gather as one community.

The Gospel will be proclaimed with simplicity and love. The Bible will be taught with clarity and passion. There we will pray and learn how to pray. We will worship and sing and testify. There, in the context of chapel, we will confront the complex issues of the day — TOGETHER.

The new chapel at Olivet will be used to transform lives of Olivet students and their spouses and their children and their workplaces and their churches and their communities and the long reach of all the places they touch.

To learn more about this important project and how you can provide seats for the new Chapel, contact the Office of Development at 815-939-5171 or go online to www.olivet.edu.

GENERAL A S S E M B LY EDITION

By Tyler Wallenfang ’10 Accounting

I ALWAYS WANTED

to play basketbalL in college — IT WAS JUST A MATTER OF

WHERE I WOULD DO IT.

NICOL E JOHNS ON ’10

I had several offers from NCAA Division III schools and other NAIA schools, but I never really felt like those were the places for me.   Really, I wasn’t even sure that Olivet was the right place for me at the time; but looking back, I know it was the right decision. I have really enjoyed my basketball career here and continue to see how everything has worked out in my life since deciding to come to Olivet.   Playing basketball in college shapes you in so many ways — my coaches have definitely played a big role in my development. Coach Voudrie played a big role in helping me develop a strong work ethic, and coach Hodge has helped me work on my attitude in the midst of adversity.   Plus, being a studentathlete has been a huge part of getting me ready for the future, preparing me to be a leader. You not only learn how to prioritize your time, you know what kind of commitment is needed to be successful in anything in life.   But probably the most memorable and favorite part of my career here at Olivet is my team. I love my teammates, and I would say we have a bond unlike any other team. We are always joking around with each other, always having a good time. There isn’t a dull moment with my teammates!   Besides all the fun, we also have a bunch of guys who are hard workers and will do what it takes to help out their teammates — on the court and off.   I really don’t think there is another team in college basketball that is as fun and great to be around than mine. I definitely hope to keep in touch with all of my teammates long after my time in college is done.

GENERAL A S S E M B LY EDITION

10 Questions with

Carl Leth, dean of the School of Theology and Christian Ministry

What is www.EpworthPulpit.com, and what kind of response have you had to it so far?

1

Epworthpulpit.com is a new Web site sponsored by the School of Theology and Christian Ministry   as a resource to the Church. We have lead articles each month in a variety of ministry interest areas (children’s ministry, youth ministry, congregational leadership, Hispanic ministry – Spanish. And so on.). We are trying to offer ideas, opportunity for dialogue and useful resources. We are still learning how to use and develop the site but we have had good response from visitors. We want to make this site a regular destination for ministers in our region and beyond. Can you tell us a bit about Olivet’s program in Puerto Rico?

2

We are in our second year of teaching classes in Puerto Rico. This is a collaborative project with the two districts of the Church of the Nazarene in response to their interest in college-level training for their ministry students. We offer a three-year cycle of courses that will complete requirements for a major in Christian ministry. Students in Puerto Rico can complete the other requirements for their degree in local colleges or universities. It’s fun to work with these non-traditional students who are so excited about ministry. And, of course, Puerto Rico is a beautiful place. Olivet now offers a series of in tegrated bachelor’s and master’s degrees in theology and Christian ministry. Tell us about that.

3

Students may now apply for provisional admission into the graduate program when they apply for admission into Olivet’s undergraduate program. Stu dents meeting the (quite basic) requirements will be granted a 50 percent scholarship on their master’s tuition.    This fall, we will offer six Master of Arts degrees on campus at Olivet. Of these, three are one-year programs and three (ministry preparation programs) require two years, with the second year in a ministry assignment. Our M.A. in pastoral ministry covers the same course of study as a traditional Master of Divinity.

Pastoral Ponderings The second year of these programs is an innovative transition to ministry. Students will take a ministry position and begin their ministry, but they will also have a nearby mentor who will meet with them regularly. They will also return to campus for a final series of one-week intensive classes. They will be working with their project adviser to develop their philosophy of ministry and their initial ministry plan. This will provide a great “runway” into ministry for these students.    Any new student applying to Olivet (freshman or transfer) who has a 3.0 average and plans to complete a major in the School of Theology and Christian Ministry is eligible. Because some of our majors are small, students may also be able to double major in another department.

Fourth, students taking our ministry preparation degrees will be wellprepared for ministry and effectively supported in the beginning of their ministry. They will be positioned for success — in the best sense of that word. What advice would you offer to someone who is considering a career in full-time ministry?

5

If God has not clearly called you, don’t do it. If God has clearly called you, don’t do anything else. God’s call to ministry is a “weighty gift.” It is awesome in every sense of that word. But only if He has called you. When and how did you first know you were called to be a pastor?

6

What are the benefits for stu dents who study through these integrated programs?

By the time I was 10 or 11 years old, I knew I was called to pastoral ministry. It was a persistent urging that would not go away. I tried to go in other directions (I wanted to be a lawyer!) but God would not let me go. And I’m glad He wouldn’t. God’s call to be a pastor has been a wonderful gift to me.

4

First, they can settle their educational plans through their master’s degree. That allows them to plan ahead in a number of ways. For instance, they may choose to double major as undergrads and complete their ministry training in the grad program. This opens up new study options for their undergraduate program.    Second, it makes the bachelor’s and master’s programs more affordable. They can complete their master’s degree with little or no additional debt. For students entering the ministry, that is an important issue.    Third, they will be able to take full advantage of our faculty resources. We have 16 residential teaching faculty members, as well as a team of highquality adjuncts. Students will benefit from additional opportunities to study with these excellent teacher-mentors.

What is your favorite course to teach?

7

That’s an impossible ques tion! I love teaching the two semester progression in Chris tian theology. I have a year with all of our majors exploring our faith. It is a wonderful privilege and opportunity. I also teach worship and preaching. Our worship is so important — and I enjoy helping students discover how important it is, and why. I also teach seminars on Augustine and theology in the Reformation. I enjoy them all!

Tell us a bit about your family. Nancy is my wife of 32-plus years. We have six children. Carl ’06, our oldest, is an ONU grad in engineering who lives and works in the St. Louis area. Stephanie ’09 just graduated from Olivet in early childhood education and is looking for a teaching position. We have four children we adopted from Haiti in 2004. They are Mark (16), Michelle (14), Jennifer (11) and Gabriel (8). They keep us busy, but they are all great kids and doing very well. In what ways has your experience in the United States Marine Corps helped shape you as a minister?

9

That’s an interesting ques tion. In fact, I think it really has contributed to my min istry. One thing that the Marines are good at teaching you is that you can keep going even when you think you can’t go any further. No matter how tired or hurt you are, you can keep moving. There have been times in ministry — and life — when that has made a difference. That’s not to diminish the enabling of the Holy Spirit. But maybe the Holy Spirit even uses U.S. Marine Corps training for His purposes. What might surprise folks about the faculty in the School of Theol ogy and Christian Ministry?

10

We laugh together a lot. Visitors to our faculty meetings have commented — with surprise — how much laughter there is in our meetings. We are serious at times, too, but we have a good time working together.
