SET YOUR ISO ON THE FLY There’s an additional way to change the ISO without taking your eye from the viewfinder: When you press the ISO button, you will see all of the camera settings in the viewfinder disappear, leaving just the ISO information viewable. Use the Main dial to adjust your ISO, and once it’s at the preferred setting, it will remain locked in until you change it again. You can also take advantage of the camera’s Quick Control screen to change your settings. This feature allows you to make changes to the shutter speed, aperture, ISO, and other settings while looking at the LCD Monitor on the back of the camera (Figure 1.3).

NOISE Noise is the enemy of digital photography, but it has nothing to do with the loudness of your camera operation. It refers to the electronic artifacts that appear as speckles in your image. They generally appear in darker shadow areas and are a result of the camera trying to amplify the signal to produce visible information. The more the image needs to be amplified—raising the sensitivity through higher ISOs—the greater the amount of noise will be.

5. SET THE CORRECT WHITE BALANCE White balance refers to the process of balancing the color temperature to the light in the location where you are shooting, so that the colors appear “normal.” Our eyes have the ability to adjust to these changes so quickly that we don’t even realize that certain lights give off different colors. Most of the film used in traditional film photography was daylight balanced, meaning that the color in photos taken outdoors or with a flash looks correct. Another option, tungsten, balanced film for indoor use. But anything beyond that had to be adjusted with colored filters to match the light. With the advances in digital photography, we
