Accessibility for Wheelchair Visitors Old Salem Museums & Gardens is a living history museum with original buildings on their original sites. Old Salem’s restored area is about 7 blocks long and 3 blocks wide. Brick and stone sidewalks tend to be uneven in areas due to tree roots. Some buildings have been slightly modified to allow handicap access. The following provides routing for wheelchairs, starting at the Old Salem Visitor Center, heading north into the historic district. Handicapped parking is available in various locations on Main Street for cars and mini-vans. Wheelchairs are not available.

old salem visitor center – Tickets, restrooms, introductory film, Souvenir Shop, and Old Salem Candy Shop (popcorn, fudge), occasional organ concerts. All accessible.

Proceed across the pedestrian bridge to the frank l. horton museum center – Inside is the museum of early southern decorative arts (mesda). All accessible. timothy vogler gunsmith shop – Three steps. On the left side is a ramp. Notify interpreter at door. salem tavern museum – Eight steps, not wheelchair accessible. On left side of building, go down the earthen drive – accessible restrooms are in the Shed. Tavern Barn is on the left. On the right side, the kitchen can be viewed from the outside. If door not open please knock.

j. blum house – Two steps, not wheelchair accessible. schultz shoemaker shop – Two steps. Interior can be seen from doorway. Closed on weekends. john vogler house – One step. They have a small removable ramp that can accommodate a push wheelchair only.

Ask the interpreter at the door for assistance.

Outside the J. Vogler House, at the corner of Main and West Street and down the hill to your left, on the right side of the road are accessible restrooms. Gravel path leads through the gate to the single brothers’ gardens

t. bagge merchant – One high step. Shop is on the corner of Main and West Streets. No step at the Garden shop door. Ask cashier to open the Garden Shop door. moravian book & gift shop – One high step. Accessible from the front and right side door and the back entrances. market fire engine house – Is across Main Street on the square and accessible. single brothers’ house – Three steps. Notify interpreter at front door that you require assistance to enter the

“Business Office” door and continue straight back through a second door into the exhibit area. Exit through the same doors. To tour the lower level, again ask for assistance, then go to the Academy end of the building, turn left down the walk and around to the back of the building. The door at the northern end opens into the Dye shop. If the door is locked, assistance can be found inside the second door. Exit through the Dye Shop door.

miksch gardens & house – Four steps. Enter driveway to right of building. Garden outbuilding, rear yard with bake oven are wheelchair accessible; gardens have limited access on grass. The house is not accessible. winkler bakery – Four steps. Not accessible. a. butner hat shop – A very small shop. A push wheelchair can navigate it. home moravian church – There will be a sign on the door if the church is open for interpretation. The left side vestibule door has a ramp.

god’s acre – Fully accessible. st. philips heritage center – Steps but fully accessible. Log Church, ramp in rear. Brick Church, left side ramp. Graveyards, right side ramp. Notify interpreter if assistance is required.

dining options in old salem the flour box tea room & caf茅

(independently operated, call 336-893-9094 for hours) is fully wheelchair accessible. Enter off West Street on sidewalk ramp. Both dining and restrooms are accessible.

the tavern in old salem

(independently operated, call 336-722-1227 for hours and to book reservations). Three steps at front and side of porch. For assisted entry, notify staff. Restrooms not accessible inside the restaurant. Outdoor dining under shelter at rear near Woodshed Restrooms. The handicap accessible Woodshed Restrooms are open to guests of The Tavern in Old Salem during regular museum hours.
