As many of you know, Lynette McLain, long-time executive director and employee of the Oklahoma Osteopathic Association, officially retired Dec. 31, 2015. To honor her service to the OOA and the profession, the Oklahoma Educational Foundation for Osteopathic Medicine Board of Trustees has created the Lynette McLain Osteopathic Continuing Medical Education Fund (LMOCMEF). The sole purpose of this fund is to promote and maintain ongoing osteopathic CME for practicing osteopathic physicians. Honor Lynette’s dedicated service to the profession and support the OOA’s tradition of CME excellence with a year-end, tax-deductible gift. McLain has been a significant part of the Oklahoma Osteopathic Association since joining the staff in 1973. She was actively involved in the creation of the Oklahoma Osteopathic Educational Center in Oklahoma City, the home of the OOA since 1986. For the past 42 years, she served in various roles before being named executive director in August 1999. As executive director of the OOA, she is a registered lobbyist for the association; secretary/treasurer for the Oklahoma Educational Foundation for Osteopathic Medicine; and a treasurer of the Oklahoma Osteopathic Political Action

Committee. Lynette has also represented the OOA on various committees of the State of Oklahoma, including the Governor’s Task Force on Tobacco & Youth and the Oklahoma Physician Manpower Training Commission. She is a member and past president of the Association of Osteopathic State Executive Directors and has served on a number of American Osteopathic Association committees. Lynette has received numerous awards and recognition for her leadership and service to the osteopathic profession, including the coveted Bob E. Jones, CAE Leadership Award from the American Osteopathic Association in 2007 and the Association Professional of the Year from the Oklahoma Society of Association Executives in 2000. “She has not only been an extremely professional asset to our association, but she has also touched the lives of the majority of us on a personal level—knowing us not only as physicians, but also as friends, and for many of us, as part of her family,” OOA President C. Michael Ogle, DO said.

provided by Cord Gothard, OMS-II, President OSU-COM Student Osteopathic Medical Association Oklahoma State University College of Osteopathic Medicine students are now relaxing and enjoying their time not studying over Christmas break. The first-year students have officially completed their most challenging semester of medical school, and second years are now starting to feel the pressure to start studying for the Step 1 Boards. This past fall semester was busy for our students and the college with a visit from the American Osteopathic Association President John W. Becher, DO, and curriculum changes for the upcoming spring semester.

Oklahoma D.O. PAGE 8

In late October, we were privileged enough to have Dr. Becher visit our campus to talk to our students about the new goals of the AOA in spreading the name of osteopathic medicine across our nation and to answer any questions our students had about the new single graduate medical education accreditation. Dr. Becher did an excellent job in explaining the mission of the AOA and also challenged our students to help with the brand campaign by making a short video explaining what a DO is. Our students (OMS-I to OMS-IV) were able to get some of their questions answered concerning the new accreditation. OSU-COM students did an outstanding job representing our college. One of the great qualities of our college is, when the students or faculty have a concern with the curriculum or the education processes they do not hesitate to make a change—they promptly address the issue to help us become better osteopathic physicians. There has been a rather drastic change in both the OMS-I and OMS-II spring schedule. The first-year students’ schedule has changed so they are getting more systems in this spring semester than previously; this will allow them to be better prepared going into second year and for any shadowing experiences they want to do over the summer. The second-year students’ schedule has had some drastic changes as well. The faculty has combined systems allowing us to finish the semester a month early giving us more time to study for boards. They have also hired a new faculty member Matthew D. Tucker, DO, to teach a systems review board preparation course once a week through the semester. We also have two new COMSAEs scheduled—one early in the semester to give us a baseline of where we are, and the second is at the end of the semester. The students are excited about the changes but are really looking forward to their break.

The rules have changed. Prior to September 2015, the Oklahoma Health Care Authority imposed draconian limitations on the utilization of telemedicine services for SoonerCare patients. Providers had to practice in rural areas of the state and only a select few specialties’ services were covered. The promulgation of new rules in September of 2015 removed many of the barriers that hampered the widespread utilization of telemedicine among SoonerCare patients (see Table 1). For some providers, the new rules will potentially open revenue streams that were nonexistent before. While other providers could see changes to the ways they provide care. Patients can now be “seen” by a physician without leaving their home or residence for a variety of services. This allows patients to avoid absences from work or school for several hours driving to another city for a checkup or follow-up visit. It can also reduce the number of individuals that contract an illness while in a patient waiting room. Telemedicine can also be used as an interim visit extending the length of time between regularly scheduled in-office visits for monitoring and treatment of chronic illnesses. Through the use of telemedicine, physicians are now able to take extended vacations away from the office, even out of the state, and still see patients that need services. Physicians are also able to integrate telemedicine into their existing practice to help fill time vacancies caused by no-show patients. Physicians may also choose to provide telemedicine care to individuals who are bed ridden, or unable to travel to the office, and have an extremely hard time making it to an in-office visit.

At this time, the majority of insurance companies are paying for some telemedicine visits. It is always best for patients to contact their insurance company to validate that services will be covered. Oklahoma is already a telemedicine friendly state and legislation, rules, and payer sources continue to make telemedicine more appealing and available all the time. Oklahoma has already passed legislation causing the state to be known as a “telemedicine parity state.” This legislation requires payers to compensate telemedicine services that are paid at the same rate as an in-office visit. With new low-cost clip-on cameras that attach to a smart phone or tablet, physicians and patients are now able to easily take and see pictures of areas that previously were only available in a physician’s office environment. These types of images can be used in patient review and assist in diagnosis. Oklahoma State University (OSU) Center for Health Sciences has long been a resource for physicians desiring to participate in telemedicine. OSU Center for Health Sciences continues to provide instruction and assistance to students and those already in practice on the use of telemedicine and how to integrate it into a practice. Additional information from the Oklahoma Health Care Authority regarding telemedicine, including rules and policies that went into effect on Sept. 1, 2015, can be found at: https://www.okhca. org/providers.aspx?id=10014&terms=telemedicine%5c
