Summer is a prime opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors. To reduce home energy use, avoid using your oven and use a grill instead. Not only will cooking outdoors eliminate the electricity used to power the stove, but it will also avoid raising the temperature inside your home, reducing the need for air conditioning or cooling. You can also avoid using the oven with tasty no-bake recipes. Get creative in the kitchen (or the backyard) and find new ways to save energy! Source: energy.gov

Convenience is key for members attending this year's Annual Meeting & Member Appreciation Night

For members who have attended OEC's Annual Meeting & Member Appreciation Night in the past, this year's event will look completely different. Due to construction inside the University of Oklahoma's Lloyd Noble Center (LNC), the event will take place as a drive-thru in the LNC's parking lot on Friday, Sept. 15.

As details of the event continue to take shape, here's what we can share about this year's Annual Meeting:

• Members who attend will receive a $30 bill credit (a $10 increase from 2022).

• Convenience is key, as OEC staff will register you from the comfort of your vehicle. Simply follow the signs and friendly faces!

• As usual, members who attend will receive a

bag filled with free OEC and OEC Fiber items.

• Those who attend might be one of our lucky prize winners — including two $1,000 grand prizes!

• Unfortunately, the logistics of a drive-thru event do not allow for food to be served.

"Because of the LNC's construction, we have the opportunity to try a different concept we believe our members will enjoy," said Brianna Wall, OEC manager of marketing and member relations. "Fortunately, many of our co-op peers across the nation have tested this drive-thru meeting format, and we believe we can offer our members the same successful experience."

More details will be provided in next month's Co-op News and as Sept. 15 draws near.

SPECIAL WEEK a

Three employees volunteer at 2023 Special Olympics Summer Games

Volunteers from 23 Oklahoma electric co-ops came together in Stillwater in May to assist with the Special Olympics Summer Games. Three employees represented OEC among the record 150 co-op volunteers in Stillwater.

Network Technician III Nick Moyer, Copywriter Erin McKnight and Member Service Associate Rosa Baringer joined other co-op employees and family members as they assisted with track and field events.

Four thousand athletes from across the state participated in the Summer Games. During the three-day event, athletes competed in track and field, bocce, bowling, golf, horseshoes, powerlifting, basketball and softball.

"This was by far the most rewarding experience of my life, especially now that I have a kiddo of my own," said McKnight. "Seeing the joy on these athletes' faces and having the opportunity to celebrate with them has changed me for the better."

Barringer echoed her comments. "It was a humbling and inspiring experience to watch the athletes compete with such joy! I would recommend that everyone volunteer if they get the chance."

In addition to OEC's volunteers, the OEC Foundation, Inc. via the Operation Round Up® program donates funds to area Special Olympics teams each year. That funding is made possible by members who round up their monthly electric bills to the nearest dollar. 6617100103

"Volunteering for Special Olympics is a humbling experience. I am so proud of these young people and their tenacity to overcome their obstacles and win," said Moyer. "Each participant touched my heart. The high fives were endless, and the smiles and hugs were priceless. I will treasure each minute."

Wishes that HEAL

Make-A-Wish Oklahoma grants childhood dreams and medical triumphs

In the heart of Oklahoma, a wonderful organization known as Make-A-Wish brings hope, joy and healing to children battling critical illnesses. Make-A-Wish Oklahoma, a chapter of the national foundation serving the entire state, has made dreams come true for these brave kids for several years. Last year, two children in Oklahoma Electric Cooperative's service territory had their wishes fulfilled due to a large donation from The OEC Foundation.

"One of the driving forces behind our success is the donations from organizations," said Erin Nantois, Makea-Wish Oklahoma's director of philanthropy. "Their support and collaboration profoundly impact the lives of countless wish children and their families."

THE IMPACT: The OEC Foundation's support is evident through the stories of wish children like Austin and Tallyn. Austin, a five-year-old boy with high-risk stage 4 neuroblastoma, comes from a large, loving family, Nantois said. With the OEC Foundation's help, Make-A-Wish Oklahoma provided Austin and his family the opportunity to create lasting memories during a challenging time.

"The light at the end of the tunnel was something that Austin and our family focused on during these

difficult days when hope seemed out of reach," said Austin's mother, Joyce.

Tallyn, a young girl battling Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis, eagerly awaited her wish experience for over two years due to COVID-19 restrictions, Nantois said. With the support of the OEC Foundation, Tallyn, a big fan of all things princesses, lived out her dreams at Disney World, met her favorite Disney princesses and enjoyed an unforgettable trip with her family.

"I don't think I realized just how big of an impact it would be," said Tallyn's mother, Karin. "I knew a Disney trip would be amazing, but I don't think I realized just how magical and healing it would be for our entire family."

THE HEALING POWER OF WISHES: Research has shown that children with something positive to look forward to, such as a wish experience, exhibit improved compliance with treatments, better emotional well-being and even enhanced physical health, Nantois said.

"By providing hope and a tangible goal, wishes contribute to the overall well-being of these resilient children," Nantois said. "We have seen it time and again, children with a wish to look forward to improve not just physically, but emotionally and mentally."

6 Oklahoma Electric Co-op News • July 2023

Following the fulfillment of their child's wish, 94% of parents observed remarkable enhancements in their child's emotional wellbeing, according to Make-a-Wish Foundation's 2022 Impact Report. The effect was so profound that 91% of parents believed the granted wish contributed to their child's improved chances of overcoming their illness. As a testament to the transformative power of wishes, a striking 91% of parents regarded the wish experience as an essential component of their child's medical treatment.

OPERATION ROUND UP: Since 1997, donations from generous members who round up their monthly bills have funded more than $51,000 in donations to Make-a-Wish Oklahoma, helping more than 60 children in our service territory.

"It is so special to have these community partnerships," said Education & Outreach Programs Director Tory Tedder-Loffland. "Seeing the direct impact of our members' and employees' donations on these families reminds us of why we do what we do."

COLLABORATION AND FUNDRAISING: As Director of Philanthropy, Nantois focuses on fundraising to support the organization's mission. Through grant writing, corporate partnerships and community engagement, Make-A-Wish Oklahoma raises funds to grant wishes and provide vital support to families.

"Every donation means more wishes granted, which clears the way for more kids to come down," Nantois said. "It clears the way for the 300 waiting children behind them."

GET INVOLVED! VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT: Make-A-Wish Oklahoma understands the importance of community involvement and the power of volunteers, Nantois said. Programs like "Kids for Wish Kids" enable high school students to organize fundraisers and contribute to granting wishes locally, Nantois said. College students can join the "Wishmakers on Campus" club, while young professionals can participate in the Young Professionals Council. These opportunities allow individuals to give back to their community while building meaningful connections.

In recent years, many homeowners discovered the convenience and potential cost savings of creating a smart home. From the improved energy efficiency of smart thermostats to the increased security of smart doorbells and cameras, smart home technology can transform your house into an ideal living space.

However, the delights of smart home devices do not have to be limited to the four corners of your house. With some planning and creative design, you can take the conveniences of smart home technology into your backyard!

"There are many ways our subscribers can take advantage of their Wi-Fi outdoors," said OEC Fiber President David Goodspeed. "Our goal is to enhance their quality of life by ensuring everyone has access to the services they need."

The possibilities of outdoor Wi-Fi

use are endless. Here are a few ways to create your smart backyard and make your outdoor living area the envy of your neighborhood!

SMART OUTDOOR SECURITY FOR YOUR BACKYARD

While smart doorbells and cameras have become popular for monitoring your front door and driveway, you can also create additional peace of mind by providing similar security for your backyard.

Outdoor wireless security cameras let you watch what's happening in your backyard. You can keep an eye on your kids playing outside while you attend to other matters indoors. Motion sensors can detect unwanted visitors, including wildlife, making a smart outdoor security camera a wise choice.

OUTDOOR SMART SPEAKERS

Music is a must when entertaining,

whether it's a pool party or an outdoor barbecue.

And with dust-tight, waterproof outdoor smart speakers, you can arrange a sound system for your backyard or patio that rivals your indoor entertainment set-up!

Smart speakers can connect to your devices and music apps like Apple Music or Spotify, letting you show off your playlists as you digitally spin tunes outside. Some smart outdoor speakers can individually fill an outdoor area but consider adding multiple smart speakers and pairing them together for a richer sound.

OUTDOOR SMART TVS

With today's technology, you don't have to sit indoors to enjoy TV or watch a weekend's worth of fall football. Indeed, more and more backyard barbecues and parties are incorporating live sports and other entertainment on outdoor smart TVs,

not limited by the length of the cable cord!

"I watched the NBA Finals on the back porch. You can go anywhere," said OEC Fiber subscriber Walter Kula of Choctaw.

While outdoor smart TVs are more expensive than their indoor counterparts, they endure the elements and last years longer outdoors. Look for IP55-rated models, which are the most moisture-resistant and dust-proof outdoor smart TVs. Some are even pollen-proof!

SMART OUTDOOR LIGHTING

Outdoor lighting can add a unique ambiance to your backyard. Whether you create dramatic effects by spotlighting shrubbery and trees or stringing-up lights along pathways, smart lighting takes outdoor lighting to the next level.

Today's smart lighting tech lets you adjust the power of the lighting,

including dimming, with voice commands. Other smart bulbs can change colors and hues—this can be especially useful during holidays!

And to add to the security features of your backyard, you can also include motion sensors to turn on any lights when a passer-by is detected.

SMART FIRE PITS

When the weather cools in fall and winter, you can enjoy the coziness and warmth of a smart fire pit. Some models include features like smokeless fires with adjustable flames, greatly easing the workload of starting and building a fire.

Other models are traditional fire pits that burn wood and can even be used to cook — or roast marshmallows! Smart technology lets you control the flames through your devices, providing additional safety and convenience.

SMART BARBECUE GRILLS

What outdoor space is complete without a cooker? Smart grills include many features designed to reduce the stress frequently accompanying backyard barbecues. Today's smart technology is built into your smart grill, keeping you informed on timing and temperature so you don't undercook your guests' hamburgers or burn your shish kabobs to crisps. A smart grill can genuinely help make your next backyard barbecue a success!

By setting up a smart backyard, you might enjoy more of your property than you ever imagined. With OEC Fiber's unmatched network, these smart devices can integrate modern technology seamlessly across your back porch and patio, making your home more livable, secure and valuable.

Get Smart About Home Lighting

Gone are the days when a simple flip of the switch was the only choice for illuminating our homes. While we still have this tried-and-true option, we’ve entered a new era of innovative and intelligent technologies, which includes smart lighting.

Smart lighting connects to Wi-Fi and offers an array of cutting-edge functionality and convenience. Let’s look at the main benefits of smart lighting options.

SMART LIGHTING IS ENERGY EFFICIENT

Most smart bulbs utilize LED

technology, which is much more efficient than traditional incandescent lighting. Additionally, smart lighting gives you more control over how and when you light your home, ultimately resulting in less energy used for lighting.

SMART LIGHTING PROVIDES CONVENIENCE AND CONTROL

Most smart bulbs can be controlled from an app on your smartphone or can be paired with your voice assistant, like Amazon Alexa. You can conveniently control lighting settings from anywhere in your home

Personalize your home lighting and save money on energy bills
10 Oklahoma Electric Co-op News • July 2023

or when you’re away. Whether you want to set a schedule for lighting or adjust brightness levels, these smart options offer effortless control from the comfort of, well, anywhere!

SMART OPTIONS EMPOWER YOU TO PERSONALIZE HOME LIGHTING

Bright, warm, purple, green––whatever mood you want to create, smart lighting can help. For a more traditional look, try dimmable white bulbs. If you want to create the perfect ambiance for movie night, look for bulbs that can be adjusted for a variety of vibrant colors. The possibilities are endless.

While smart lighting offers convenience and control, keep in mind your wall light switch will need to stay “on” for you to control the smart bulb from your phone or via voice command. To use a smart bulb, the wall switch it’s connected to must be “on” so the bulb receives power, which enables it to connect to a Wi-Fi network.

If you need additional options to operate the lights, consider a smart light switch. Today’s smart switches tend to play nicely with smart bulbs. If you want to control your smart bulbs with a physical switch (in addition to using your phone and voice commands), look for smart switches that include a built-in feature that allows both. Many smart light switches include motion

detectors as well.

If you’re looking to take the plunge and integrate multiple smart bulbs to your home lighting system, your best bet may be a kit, like the Philips Hue Starter Kit. Most kits include several bulbs and any additional tools you’ll need to get started.

If you’re new to smart home tech and looking to start small, try a smart bulb in a high-traffic area of your home. It’s also worth noting that smart plugs are a great starter option and allow convenient control of lamps or other lighting fixtures that are plugged in to a wall outlet. Smart plugs are inexpensive and simply plug in to your existing outlet. Electrical items that are connected to the smart plug can be controlled from a smart phone app, just like smart bulbs.

Whether you’re looking for more convenience, colorful options or better ways to manage energy use, smart lighting can provide multiple benefits. Determine which smart lighting features are most important for your needs, then start shopping!

The Irving Students for Solar Club visited Oklahoma Electric Cooperative's office on May 19. During their visit, students took a comprehensive tour of OEC's different departments, including dispatching, metering, engineering and logistics, guided by Education and Outreach Programs Director Tory Tedder-Loffland. The students discussed diverse job functions and potential opportunities within the organization.
