CEO ADDRESS

Here at OEC we pride ourselves on many things: safety, reliability, affordability, being financially sound, to name a few. But one thing I personally love about OEC is the fact that we are local. My own experiences in dealing with big-box companies have made me even more grateful to be part of a company that is not only housed in central Oklahoma, but its history is here, its people are here, its roots are here. When you call us, you're talking to a trained professional sitting in Norman who might live around the corner from you. When your lights go out, the people working to turn them back on might be your neighbors, or the parents of your kid's little league teammate. Our board of directors are stationed within their districts across our service area so we can be sure we're meeting the needs of all members. From right here in Oklahoma. We were created out of community to serve the community, and that support continues today. You might see OEC on a high school scoreboard, or sponsoring local fundraisers, or handing out goodies at your local fireworks show, or sending your kids to camp (hint: see page 8). We wholeheartedly believe that having a local presence is important — this was highlighted in October when we were able to mobilize very quickly to restore power to thousands of members. I also believe that creating a locally owned and operated telecommunications company in OEC Fiber has benefited all who enjoy its services today. We all know how massive a lot of those companies are, and at the end of the day, I think people in general feel better about their dollars getting reinvested in infrastructure here, in community here, in jobs here. OEC Fiber is the voice of our local members who needed our service. Sure, options are great to have, but some members didn't have any options. We were it. And we've been so very proud to bring them a service that allows them to thrive. Oklahomans taking care of Oklahomans. It's something we don't take lightly and are proud to be part of.

Use wool or rubber dryer balls in the clothes dryer to reduce drying time and static. Wool dryer balls can also absorb extra moisture. These are an efficient alternative to dryer sheets, which can create buildup on the dryer’s filter and reduce air circulation. If you prefer dryer sheets, scrub the filter once a month to remove buildup.

OEC WINS

TOP

COMMUNICATOR

AWARD

OEC's marketing and member relations team takes home top honors at annual statewide conference OEC recently received recognition from “The OKLU Awards,” the annual member relations, marketing & communications contest sponsored by the Oklahoma Association of Electric Cooperatives (OAEC) and Oklahoma Living magazine. The contest provides an opportunity for the judges to select a “Top Rural Electric Cooperative Communicator,” which is a distinguished statewide honor given to one cooperative team. This year, Oklahoma Electric Cooperative was selected for the esteemed award. OEC won eight other awards including Best Digital Communication, Best Internal Newsletter, Best Article, Best Use of Social Media and more. The annual OKLU Awards program recognizes the best communication and marketing efforts by Oklahoma’s rural electric cooperatives. Electric cooperative communicators and marketing professionals submitted more than 125 entries in 2020. Noted professionals in the fields of marketing, design, communication and photography judged the event, which uses a detailed scoring system to determine the winners. “We are honored to recognize excellence in the work communicators produce on behalf of electric cooperatives,” said Anna Politano, OAEC Director of Public Relations and Communications. “Delivering messages in a clear, concise and creative format is vital to keeping members engaged in their cooperative.” [3917214702] OEC was recognized during the OAEC Member Relations & Communications Association Meeting on Nov. 12. The in-person event was moved to virtual to maintain the health and safety of cooperative employees across the state. The Oklahoma Association of Electric Cooperatives (OAEC) is a statewide association created and voluntarily supported by local electric distribution and generation & transmission cooperatives. OAEC is comprised of 30 member systems: 27 distribution electric cooperatives and three generation & transmission electric cooperatives. Oklahoma Living is the state's largest subscription-based monthly publication, published for consumer-members of Oklahoma's rural electric cooperatives by the Oklahoma Association of Electric Cooperatives since 1948.

OEC serves area wineries that thrive on patron participation Oklahoma Historical Society records indicate that the first documented winery was opened on Oklahoma Territory in 1898. Today there are approximately 52 wineries across the state. Oklahoma Electric Cooperative is proud to power a few of these operations in Lexington, Slaughterville, Tuttle and Norman. In addition to making tasty wines these enterprises have also incorporated into their business models ways of encouraging community spirit. Canadian River Vineyards and Winery is set on a picturesque acreage due south of Norman at Highway 77 and Slaughterville Road. The business has been recently acquired by married couples Autumn and Don Bellinger and Karie and Chad Killgore. In addition to being friends and business partners, Autumn and Chad are also siblings. Although new to the 20-yearold operation, the proprietors intend to maintain and expand its already strong ties to the community. One of these ways late last year was to host fundraising activities at the winery for a member of the community in need. Last June, Norman Police Department officer Jenny Bryan was diagnosed with a Stage 4 re-occurrence of breast cancer. Folks came out to help raise money for her battle against the disease. “I’ve known Jenny for nine years,” Autumn Bellinger said. “She was an instructor at the YMCA, involved in the community and a really great person. She’s a single mom with four kids and when it came to my attention she had breast cancer again, Karie and I knew we had to do something to raise money for her.” The community stepped-up supporting the food and drink event fundraiser and they were able to donate significantly to Jenny Bryan’s medical care fund. “On a monthly basis we’re planning similar events to charitably benefit individuals or organizations,” Karie Killgore said. As a member of the Noble and Dibble Chambers of Commerce, with children in Noble Public Schools and operations manager at McClain Bank, Killgore was already closely involved in her community and its needs. “Being part of the community is good for business opportunities, getting to know people and networking,” Killgore said. Activities at the winery include tastings and food pairings to celebrate Valentine’s Day, upscale couples socializing events and “Sip n Shop” with multiple vendors present. “We’re excited that OEC serves the winery because they are presently running fiber optic cable to us,” Bellinger said. “In the past we’ve had horrible internet access but now everyone raves about their OEC internet services. OEC has always been a huge supporter of the Noble community,” CREATING COMMUNITY IN EAST NORMAN Native Spirits Winery is located on the rolling hills in east Norman at 10500 E. Lindsey Street. It’s operated by vinters Rick and Staci Vollmer.

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 7 They boast a full menu of award winning wines that are blended, fermented, oaked, racked, filtered and bottled on site. Native Spirits has been hosting no cover-charge, live music concerts that are open to the public at the winery for ten years. In addition to Friday music evenings, one of the signature concert series is called “Songs for Sarah.” Tragically it came about as a tribute to the couple’s 21-year-old daughter Sarah Owen, who was murdered in 2015. “Sarah had always been close to the musicians who played at the winery,” Vollmer said. “They put together the first Songs for Sarah event. Joie and John Johnson and Derek Paul did it that first year and it was such a nice way to honor Sarah who championed the underdog and was always looking for people to help.” Second Chance Animal Shelter was the first beneficiary of funds raised by the concert. Sarah was an animal lover with furry pets of her own. “We’ve recently been doing those concerts to benefit the Norman Women’s Resource Center,” Vollmer said. “We’ve branched out to benefitting other charities that she would like if she were here. Second Saturdays now feature different charities every month.” J.D. McCarty Center and Adults with Disabilities have been among recipients. As with most venues, COVID-19 has upended Native Spirits concert series. “We’ve just wanted to give back to the community in her honor,” Vollmer said. “It’s helpful to make something good come out of our tragedy.” A TUTTLE STAPLE Coal Creek and Summerside Vineyards and Wineries are owned and operated by Lisa and Billy Griffin. The operation is on 45 acres at N. Sara Road and Hwy 37 near Tuttle. “We’re working on our vineyard right now and buy grapes from contract growers here in Oklahoma, Missouri and Arkansas,” Lisa Griffin said. Griffin holds an associate degree in Oenology and Viticulture, learning how to make wine and care for vineyards. “We started working on this project in 2011,” she said. “Summerside is our sister winery here at Coal Creek. It was originally located in Vinita and we bought the equipment from the owners who were retiring. All production moved to Tuttle in 2015.” Coal Creek expanded their outdoor patio to accommodate community events. [5613200404] “We do a lot of fundraisers and have our 400 capacity event center next door,” Griffin said. “We host a lot of Tuttle and Chamber of Commerce events. There are a lot of made-in-Oklahoma products in our gift shop.” Griffin is a Chamber board member. “Local schools come in for their proms and Christmas parties,” she said. “I really like giving to the community and have a place people can come hang out and enjoy. Sports teams such as Bridge Creek High School wrestling do their fundraisers here every year with a corn hole tournament.” Coal Creek hosts the Tuttle Fraternal Order of Police’s annual car show. “We love our OEC service and haven’t had any issues,” Griffin said. “Anything that comes up is repaired quickly.” OEC is proud to provide service for an industry that has intertwined their operations into the communities where they’re located. www.okcoop.org

TRIED, TESTED AND

TRUE IMMYLabs thankful for reliability and rapid OEC Fiber speeds

A

s COVID-19 began to spread more and more rapidly through the U.S., more specifically, the state of Oklahoma, IMMY, Inc. realized that they had the expertise, machinery, and manpower to help with the testing shortage. They quickly formed IMMYLabs and developed a sign-up software and drive-thru system for testing

10

Oklahoma Electric Co-op News • February 2021

that allowed them to swab over 100 people each hour. Realizing the popularity of this service, they quickly opened more swabbing locations around the metro area that could also collect samples from over 100 patients within just one hour. News of their efficient and accurate testing spread very quickly, and their testing services became more popular than they ever could have imagined. Thousands of samples were pouring in on a daily basis. So many sign-ups and out-going results were being processed on their in-house server that they began to see complete crashes of their entire site. No one could sign up for a test and no one could access results until their server could catch up. Their IT department quickly diagnosed this as an internet speed issue. Then, along came OEC Fiber to save the day. OEC Fiber installed lines, set up their system and got them fully online with unbelievably fast upload and download speeds in a matter of a week or two. According to IMMYLabs, this has been a lifesaver (literally) when it comes to being able to continuously offer a reliable and efficient testing service. Their system has seen zero crashes since switching to OEC Fiber. This includes the week before Thanksgiving where the U.S. saw its highest demand for testing to date. In that week alone, IMMYLabs tested and reported results to over 32,000 patients. Not a single crash of their system occurred. Dr. Sean Bauman, President and CEO of IMMY and IMMYLabs, recently remarked “OEC Fiber freaking rocks! The only problem I have is that I don’t have it at my house.” Just like in science, medicine and now fiber connection reliability, the results speak for themselves.

WFEC GENERATION REPORT Western Farmers Electric Cooperative (WFEC), OEC's wholesale generation and transmission power provider, has an impressive renewable portfolio that includes wind, hydro and solar. OEC's Solar Garden, located at Interstate 35 and Highway 77 in Norman, began producing power in February 2017, and Tuttle's 40-acre Solar Farm began operation in March 2017. As more solar facilities come online, expect to see it added to WFEC's generation report, increasing the already robust mix of renewable energy sources.

TASTY TREATS

Episode 25: ACCESS to Solar for All

Honey-Garlic Shrimp Ingredients  1 pound large raw shrimp (16-20 count), peeled and deveined  1 tablespoon minced fresh garlic  2 tablespoons honey  ½ teaspoon freshly grated ginger  2 teaspoons vegetable oil

1 tablespoon soy sauce, or more to taste  1 teaspoon Asian fish sauce, or to taste  1 cup thinly sliced green onion, or to taste

39% Renewables

Directions Make sure shrimp are fully thawed and well drained. Keep in the refrigerator while you make the marinade. Whisk garlic, honey, ginger, soy sauce, and fish sauce together in a bowl. Add shrimp and toss thoroughly with a spatula for 2 minutes until completely coated. Cover with plastic wrap and marinate in the refrigerator for 30 to 60 minutes; toss occasionally while marinating. Brush a large nonstick skillet with oil and heat over high heat until you begin to see small wisps of smoke. Use tongs to immediately transfer shrimp into the hot skillet in a single layer. Set excess marinade aside. Sear shrimp for 2 minutes, then flip over. Dump in marinade and cook for 1 minute. Turn off heat and flip shrimp once more; let sit for about 1 minute. The marinade in the pan will reduce down to a beautiful glaze just from the residual heat in the pan. Garnish with green onion.
