What a month we've had. I'm not sure any of us could've predicted an October ice storm, but here we are in the aftermath looking back at what it meant for us and you. I want to start off by saying how grateful I am to have such a great team here at OEC — from the linemen and dispatchers to those taking outage calls, running food to workers and everyone in between. Although it's been five years since the last major outage event, everyone knew their roles and performed them well. They put in long, hard hours to get all our members back on and, after seven days for some, the job was finished — for the most part. Thankfully, the weather allowed us to work around-theclock, which typically isn't the case with an ice storm in January and February where it continues to re-freeze overnight. True recovery will take a while, as temporary fixes are in place until permanent repairs can be made in some areas. We appreciate our power supplier's (Western Farmers Electric Cooperative, WFEC) efforts to bring generators onsite to get members in the Tuttle area back online while repairs continue. WFEC lost 19 miles of transmission lines and structures, and work continues to repair that damage. This was the first real storm that has tested our system since we began prioritizing system upgrades and strengthening. We continue that work as we focus on a small portion of our system each year. We talk a lot about reliability here, and our efforts to strengthen our system the past several years definitely helped us. We lost 180 poles, compared to over 500 poles in the 2015 ice storm. I'm proud of the focus we've put on upgrading and maintaining our system to prepare for events like this — especially our vegetation management efforts. I know not everyone likes to see trees cut or trimmed, but I hope you understand our mission behind those practices: to always keep the lights on — and the HVAC running. Going into this storm, we knew our fiber network hadn't been tested by a major storm. We felt the fiber network held up really well with only a few outages. The storm didn't put us too far behind in continuing our build-out, either, as we just connected our 16,000th subscriber. In conclusion, I want to extend a special thank you to our contractor crews, Ozarks Electric Cooperative and Rich Mountain Electric Cooperative crews and everyone else who helped minimize the impact of this ice storm. It's one we won't soon forget.

OCTOBER ICE STORM SHOWS
NO MERCY It wouldn't be 2020 without another unprecedented event. This time, it was a record-breaking, early-season ice storm...while the leaves had yet to fall off the trees. "While we couldn't have predicted a storm of this magnitude this early in the season, we have spent the last few years preparing for it," said Vice President of Operations Marty Hayes. [5719300301] As CEO Patrick Grace discussed on page 2, board, management and staff have dedicated much of the last five years to strengthening our electrical system. Because of that, most affected members had power restored within a day or two. For others, it took up to seven days for crews to rebuild lines and replace broken poles. Customers of other electric utilities were without power for weeks. “OEC employees stepped up as usual working long hours to restore service to our members,” said Hayes. "I couldn't be prouder of the group effort." At its peak, the ice storm knocked out power to 19,900 OEC members. Our power supplier, Western Farmers Electric Cooperative, lost 19 miles of transmission lines between Pocasset and Bridge Creek. OEC called in back-up to help restore members — a total of 157 workers from OEC, contractors and mutual aid crews from Ozarks Electric Cooperative and Rich Mountain Electric Cooperative in Arkansas worked until all members had power restored. "This was the first ice storm in a long time to cause damage across the entire OEC system," said Hayes. "Poles were changed in all seven counties we serve." Ice storms are the trickiest types of storms for electric co-ops. Not only do outages occur as ice accumulates, but also as it melts and, in winter months, re-freezes. In the midst of a storm and long working hours, messages of gratitude are always appreciated by employees. This event was no exception, as members flooded OEC’s Facebook page with warm wishes and thanks. “It’s important for members to know how dedicated our employees are, not just the linemen, but everyone from the dispatch room, to member services, to those making sure we had hot meals to eat.” said CEO Patrick Grace. “It’s a team effort when storms hit, and we look for ways to improve the system at every turn so the members aren’t without power any longer than they have to be.” www.okcoop.org

JINGLE LE IN YOUR POCKET Four ways Santa saves energy in his workshop By Abby Berry The holiday season is finally upon us, and Santa and his elves have been especially busy as they gear up for their biggest night of the year. It’s no secret that Santa is known for running an efficient workshop –– how else could he make all those toys in time for Christmas Eve? Rumor has it that one way Santa ensures an efficient workspace is through energysaving measures. [1425200101] Here are four ways Santa saves energy in his workshop. Santa leaves his decorations up year-round, so by using LED holiday light strands, he’s able to save on his monthly energy bills. LED holiday strands can last up to 40 seasons, which make them a great option for any festive home. Santa requires several power tools to make a year’s worth of new toys. That’s why he insists on using cordless power tools with the ENERGY STAR® rating. According to energystar.gov, if all power tools in the U.S. used ENERGY STAR®rated battery chargers, 2 billion kWh hours of electricity could be saved – –that’s equivalent to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 1.7 million tons! Mrs. Claus loves to keep warm by the fire in the evenings, and Santa knows one of the best tricks to ensure fireplace efficiency. While a fireplace can keep a small area of your home cozy and warm, it can also pull heated air from the room through the chimney. That’s why Santa always closes the fireplace flue when a fire isn’t burning. Santa also saves energy by using power strips. Power strips are ideal for workshops, craft nooks, game rooms and other spaces in your home. With one simple switch, you can conveniently control several devices and electronics that are plugged into the power strip. This holiday season, let’s take a page from Santa’s book and remember to save energy when possible. With these four tips, you’ll be well on your way to savings (and hopefully, Santa’s “nice” list!).

Directions Preheat oven to 325º F In a medium bowl combine graham cracker crumbs, 2 tablespoons sugar and butter. Press into the bottom of a 9 inch spring form pan. Bake in preheated oven for 10 minutes. Place on a wire rack to cool.

Preheat oven to 425º F In a food processor combine cream cheese, 1 cup sugar, flour and eggnog; process until smooth. Blend in eggs, rum and nutmeg. Pour mixture into cooled crust. Bake in preheated oven for 10 minutes. Reduce heat to 250 and bake for 45 minutes, or until center of cake is barely firm to the touch. Remove from the oven and immediately loosen cake from rim.
