he Brookings Institution and Project for Public Spaces have begun an 18-month study of Oklahoma City’s emerging innovation district, an area encompassing the Oklahoma Health Center and Automobile Alley. This work, which will focus on the district’s economic strengths and quality of place, is part of the Bass Initiative on Innovation and Placemaking, a joint initiative the two organizations launched last week. The study will examine the rising interplay between innovation, quality places and economic growth by studying innovation districts in Oklahoma City and Philadelphia. The work aims to catalyze a new approach to city-building that integrates the reinforcing benefits of vibrant public spaces, innovative urban economies and inclusive growth.

Drawing from this study, Brookings and PPS will work with community leaders to create a unified vision and specific strategies for the district’s future growth in order to bolster the district as a key driver of the regional economy.

“We have the potential to enhance this area to attract more innovation, more investment and more qualified workers,” said Cathy O’Connor, president and CEO of The Alliance for Economic Development of Oklahoma City. “Using these resources in this district and across the city will impact our ability to attract new companies and employees to all areas of Oklahoma City.”

“As the epicenter of research, health care, education and technology in the state of Oklahoma, the Oklahoma Health Center Foundation recognizes this district’s potential for growth,” said David Harlow, chairman of the Oklahoma Health Center Foundation board of directors. “We believe that engaged local partnerships and creative problem solving are the keys to increasing our innovation. Brookings and PPS bring a perspective to the table that will help us get to where we need to be.” The Oklahoma City study is funded through a partnership of community organizations including the Greater Oklahoma City Chamber, the Presbyterian Health Foundation, the Oklahoma Health Center Foundation, the City of Oklahoma City and the Alliance of Economic Development for Oklahoma City. Additional community supporters include the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation and the University of Oklahoma.

Attendees of the Greater Oklahoma City Chamber’s Board Retreat were able to participate in discussions about the innovation district and identify its strengths and areas for potential growth. The information collected from attendees will be used by Brookings and PPS to start its study of the area.

More than a district

he announcement that Brookings will partner with Oklahoma City to study the best way to create innovation districts is exciting for several reasons. This partnership offers an opportunity to bolster a district that is ripe with potential. The area stretching from Automobile Alley to the Oklahoma Health Center already has the ingredients to make it a thriving area. It has creative thinkers, entrepreneurial startups and anchor institutions. With the insight of Brookings and the Project for Public Spaces, this area near downtown Oklahoma City will become a more balanced urban enclave of innovation. The qualities that drive innovation and the creation of innovation districts, according to the report by Brookings entitled “The Rise of Innovation Districts,” include an environment rich with networking assets – “relationships that have the potential to generate, sharpen and accelerate the advancement of ideas.” While that description may not have been written with Oklahoma City in mind, it perfectly describes the synergy that has created what Oklahoma City has today. From the public-private partnerships that have revived areas across Oklahoma City to the entrepreneurial spirit that has created jobs and capital investment, Oklahoma City has created its best assets through relationships that have championed new ideas. In actuality, the partnership with Brookings and PPS is about more than just one district of Oklahoma City. While the Oklahoma Health Center will be a case study for using public spaces to benefit development, the true benefits of this partnership are much further reaching. We will be able to apply the findings of this study across Oklahoma City. I am confident that this partnership will not only increase innovation in the Oklahoma Health Center, but also create areas of innovation across Oklahoma City. Sincerely,

NRHA Celebrates 50th Anniversary, New Location

he National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) kicked off a period of celebration last month as they moved into their new international headquarters in Oklahoma City. The move will be followed by the 50th running of the NRHA Futurity on Nov. 26 – Dec. 5. This pinnacle event will kick off NRHA’s 50th Anniversary year in 2016. With this major event comes the introduction of a new image, brand and look for the future of this growing organization. “The NRHA has long been a partner in Oklahoma City’s hospitality industry, and their annual Reigning Futurity brings around 6,000 visitors to Oklahoma City each year,” said Natalie Shirley, Oklahoma State University-Oklahoma City and Chamber vice chair of conventions and visitors. “We are proud to celebrate this milestone for their organization and look forward to many more years of partnership with the NRHA.” The new international headquarters will reside on the south side of State Fair Park in Oklahoma City. A special ribbon cutting ceremony will take place during the 50th Running of the NRHA Futurity. Spectators and members are encouraged to view the building on Reno Avenue in Oklahoma City. “This new facility will be a beautiful addition to State Fair Park. We are excited to work with NRHA on the development of this building, and being the horse show capital of the world, we think this new facility puts an exclamation point on that statement,” said State Fair Park Vice President Bill Allen. “This will be a great place to come learn about the sport of reining as well as an excellent office complex for the staff to have an extremely pleasant workspace to help continue to grow this excellent organization.” To coincide with its new location and its 50th anniversary, NRHA unveiled a new logo to celebrate the future of this great organization. The logo was studied by a team of marketing professionals to redesign a mark that celebrates the history of the past 50 years and provides NRHA with a look and feel to point towards the next 50. The design comes with a new color palette, a redesigned sliding horse and a cleaner look.

The Landscape of Innovation Districts What are innovation districts?

Why Oklahoma City? The thriving area surrounding the Oklahoma Health Center is ripe for new development and has demonstrated success in incubating startup businesses by providing inexpensive lab and office space to promising companies. The selected innovation district area has momentum and clear strengths and assets.

Innovation districts are an emerging trend in urban areas designed to “spur productive, inclusive and sustainable economic development” by designing spaces to connect people where they are, notes the Brookings Institute’s Bruce Katz and Julie Wagner in “The Rise of Innovation Districts: A New Geography of Innovation in America.” Defined by a specific geography, with a special focus on areas with strong entrepreneur, science and technology communities, innovation districts enhance those spaces with a mash-up of institutions, schools, mixed-use development like residences, retail stores and office space, bike-sharing and more. These spaces make it easier for people to congregate, collaborate and network – to share ideas that can lead to more development, access to capital and commercialization. And they end up drawing people from elsewhere in the community to visit, leading to more growth.

The city’s bioscience sector that has clustered in that area offer a strong anchor point for future development, and Oklahoma City already has shown its ability to work together to re-imagine some of its urban areas. Just look at the revitalization spurred by the Metropolitan Area Projects (MAPS) and the transformed Bricktown and the various districts around the city. The Innovation District takes that re-imagining to the next level, focusing on an area that has a lot of potential to bring together a community, attract new companies and employees and enhance an area.

Why work with Brookings Institution and Project for Public Spaces (PPS)? Both entities have done extensive work on innovation in communities and “placemaking.” They will be building on the area’s economic strengths and quality of place. Brookings and PPS have worked together to help economic, physical and networking assets of a defined innovation district to create synergy. And using their extensive resources, they will study Oklahoma City’s strengths in order to help its leaders craft a unified vision for the area.

Where in Oklahoma City? The emerging innovation district in Oklahoma City includes the Oklahoma Health Center, Automobile Alley, the GE Global Research Oil and Gas Technology Center as well as surrounding areas. It crosses Broadway/Interstate-235. It includes five percent, or 17,900, of the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s jobs, according to Brookings.

In the coming months, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll be reading more about this unique partnership with Brookings and PPS and how other communities have created the same synergy with their own innovation districts.

Crowe & Dunlevy Building on the corner of Main and Robinson—its third office in four years—the firm applied for membership with Oklahoma City’s Chamber of Commerce, a move that strengthened its connection to the city’s growing entrepreneurial population. Johnson, Crockett and their subsequent partners built upon their early success model, recruiting attorneys and strengthening their dedication to Oklahoma’s future. By 1929, when V.P. Crowe joined the firm that still bears his name, he was already wellestablished in the legal field through his tenures as the Garfield County attorney in Enid and the assistant attorney general for the State of Oklahoma.

Gary knew that for most of Oklahoma’s WWII heroes, traveling to D.C. to visit the WWII Memorial would be difficult if not impossible. Gary’s solution? He launched Oklahoma Honor Flights as a means to get them there. Then he turned to The Oklahoman to tell the story. The result? “The coverage we received in The Oklahoman brought some big time responses in terms of financial support,” Gary says. “With The Oklahoman’s help, we were able to send over 2,000 WWII veterans to the memorial.” That’s why Gary says, “The Oklahoman has literally put feet and wings to our organization.” It’s people like Gary who make us all proud to be Oklahomans.
