JOB POSTING: Stewardship Technician – Summer Student Position Okanagan Similkameen Stewardship Society Penticton, BC About Okanagan Similkameen Stewardship Society: Building on 20 years of stewardship in the region, the SOS Stewardship Program has formed an independent, non-profit society. In October 2013, the Okanagan Similkameen Stewardship Society (OSSS) was established in order to cooperatively promote voluntary stewardship of important habitat on private lands in the Okanagan Basin and lower Similkameen, support local residents and assist private landowners with habitat conservation and restoration. The mission of Okanagan Similkameen Stewardship Society is to promote the voluntary stewardship of important habitat on private lands in Okanagan Basin and lower Similkameen, and to provide information to private landowners on habitat conservation and restoration, as well as options for permanent conservation protection. www.OkanaganSimilkameenStewardship.ca Overview: Based out of Penticton, the Stewardship Technicians will work with OSSS Executive Director, Board & consultants on the implementation of landowner contact, outreach, habitat improvement, and land management projects. The work is focused on the stewardship of private lands which have important habitat for local wildlife and species at risk. Key Responsibilities: Landowner Contact/Stewardship Contacting rural landowners re. habitat conservation and management for species at risk; Maintaining project records and databases; Outreach: Maintaining website & social media, blogging Preparing public information displays and presenting at local community events including Saturday Farmer’s Market Assisting with research, design, and writing of newsletter articles, press releases, and information sheets or brochures. Assisting with community stewardship events (i.e. outdoor workshops), including coordination, implementation, and evaluation. Habitat Improvement: Assisting with invasive plant control (identification, weed pulling, and preparing management recommendations) to improve important habitat. Assist with habitat restoration and enhancement projects, including planting and fencing

Qualifications/Eligibility Criteria: Highly motivated, enthusiastic, adaptable, and self-starting. Excellent written and oral communication skills; comfortable interacting with the public. Able to work independently and as part of a team within a non-profit organization. Well-rounded knowledge of environmental issues. Minimum of one year post-secondary education. Excellent computer skills including website maintenance and Microsoft Office suite. Valid emergency first aid or equivalent Valid Class 5 driver’s license and vehicle. Mileage will be reimbursed Able to work evenings and weekends As a condition of funding, you must be under the age of 30 and returning to school in fall 2010.
