WELCOME TO BIG WHITE www.BigWhiteMtnInfo.com

Prepare to discover a true Canadian experience at Big White Ski Resort. Located in the picturesque Okanagan Valley, Big White is blessed with a mild sunny climate, dry fluffy powder and endless activities for the entire family.

4

If you've had enough of the outdoors and want to relax those tired muscles after a long day on the slopes, then curl up next to a warm fire, hang out with some friends in a hot tub or arrange a spa treatment.

It’s no wonder Big White’s motto is, "It's the Snow”, with an average snowfall of 750cm (24.5 feet) of champagne powder blanketing the 2,765 acres of skiable terrain each year. In fact, the snow is so impressive, Big White has recently been awarded with “The best place to go for quality snow” by Conde Nast Traveler Magazine.

To appease your appetite, head to one of the local restaurants, pubs or coffee shops. Snowshoe Sam's is home to the legendary "Gunbarrel Coffee" - a must try for every visitor. Big White’s variety of restaurants and lively pubs are stocked with the best of Okanagan wine and Canadian beer. Evening entertainment is endless at Big White; be sure to join us for fireworks every Saturday night!

Not only famous for their champagne powder, they are also Canada’s premier family destination. In 2012, Big White was awarded 'Family Ski Resort of the Year' by SkiAction Magazine. Ride Lara’s Gondola down to Happy Valley Adventure Park and tube down the lanes on the Club Penguin Mega Snow Coasters. Conquer the icy chill of Big White’s newest attraction, the Big White Ice Tower rising a gigantic 60 feet. Be sure to visit the Activities Desk for a weekly list of what is going on.

A big congratulations to Big White Ski Resort on celebrating it's 50th Anniversary. Check out pages 6 and 7 for some of the history of what's made this resort one of the best of its kind. We invite and encourage you to sample everything the mountain has to offer. We hope this guide helps to make your visit to Big White Ski Resort an enjoyable one! Please support the advertisers in the Guide and tell them you saw their ad here! See you on the slopes! • Katie Neumann

PRE-PLANNING • GROCERIES

WHAT’S FOR DINNER? Try this easy recipe, everyone loves a classic! Mac & Cheese with a twist! Recipe will easily feed 8 to 10 adults... or a herd of little kids! 4 cups dry macaroni pasta 2 lb lean ground beef 1 lb ground spicy Italian sausage meat 1 large onion, chopped small 1 zucchini, grated 1 head of broccoli, chopped small 3 medium tomatoes, diced 2 cups tomato sauce 1/2 bunch of parsley, chopped fine 2 tbsp dry oregano 2 tbsp dry basil Enough black pepper and sea salt 300g Gouda, grated 400g Mozzarella, grated 350g Cheddar, grated Cook macaroni until still a bit crunchy. (do not over cook because they will be going back into the oven)

www.BigWhiteMtnInfo.com

Mix meat together with some salt and pepper and place it in your pan like you would for a pie except it is a meat crust.

8

PLANNING AHEAD Are you staying at Big White for an extended period of time? If so, you will want to preplan some of your meals. There are some great restaurants in the Village but some nights you might want to stay home for dinner. Most units are equipped with full kitchens. Try the easy recipe in this section and wow your family and friends. There are lots of options: Stop in at Marketplace IGA in the Willow Park Shopping Centre or Cooper’s Foods in Plaza 33, both on Hwy 33, on your way to Big White to pick up all your food and beverage needs.

Sauté onion until soft and translucent mix together with cooked pasta, three cheeses, tomato sauce, dry spices, vegetables, salt and pepper. Place your pasta mixture on top of your raw meat crust.

You may also enjoy having someone else take care of your meals; all you have to do is order, then cook or bake! Have a local company like Smart Start Meals, Vacation Foods or Market Place IGA deliver your grocery and shopping needs to your rental unit. See the ads in this section for more information and tell them you saw their ad in the Big White Guide!

Add some more cheese on top if you wish and bake at 375F for about 1 hour 20 to 30 minutes or so depending on the shape of your pan.

Whether you feel like gourmet food or a pizza night, local restaurants provide takeout. See phone numbers and more information in our “Dining, Restaurants and Pubs” Section. Pages 34 to 38.

Then just serve and stand back!

If you need to fly, the Kelowna International Airport is serviced by many Canadian airlines: Air Canada, WestJet, Horizon Air (Alaska Airlines), Horizon Air Support, and Central Mountain Air. NEW this year United Airlines added a direct-flight from Los Angeles.

These airlines partner with many international carriers and fly non-stop to Kelowna from Toronto, Vancouver, Victoria, Prince George, Calgary, Edmonton, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Phoenix and Seattle. Charter services are also available at the Shell Aero Centre (private aircraft terminal) and other locations throughout Kelowna. Kelowna International Airport is the biggest and busiest in the BC Interior and the 11th busiest in Canada with a passenger count of almost 1.4 million in 2011. A $50.5 million phased expansion is underway to prepare for an increase to 1.6 million passengers by 2015. The runway has been extended from 2225 m (7300 ft) to 2743 m (9000 ft). International flights no longer have to connect through Calgary or Vancouver to reach Kelowna. This places Kelowna as the third international gateway in BC.

There's a lot to do to get ready for your trip to Big White Ski Resort and we want to make it easier for you. First is planning how to get here. Big White Ski Resort is less than an hour’s drive, 56 km (35 mi) southeast of Kelowna, the largest city in the Okanagan Valley, making it easily accessible. From Kelowna, follow Hwy 33 for 32 km (20 mi) until you reach Big White Road. Drive another 24 km (15 mi) to the main village. Announced this summer, the 11 km of Big White Road will be resurfaced from the junction with Hwy 33 through to the Kettle Valley Road to better facilitate the annual 15,000+ visitors.

PRE-PLANNING • TRANSPORTATION

DRIVING IN THE SNOW Weather conditions can be unpredictable. Ensure you are well prepared for winter roads and always adjust your driving speed to existing conditions. Be sure to fill up your gas tank before you leave Kelowna, there are no gas stations at Big White. Stay alert, slow down, and stay in control...the three key elements of safe winter driving. Clear snow and ice from all windows, lights, mirrors, and the roof. After starting your vehicle, wait for the fog to clear from the interior of the windows so you will have good visibility. Drive for the conditions, not the speed limit. Maintain a safe distance between your vehicle and others. Signal your turns and lane changes well in advance. Start off slowly, stop and steer gently. Gear down instead of braking, especially when driving down hills. Always use your lights. You must have snow tires, all four the same. If you have chains, make sure you have practiced installing them before the need arises. Top up your windshield washer reservoir regularly and carry spare fluid with you, as road spray can reduce visibility in seconds. If you get stuck or stranded, don’t panic. Stay with your vehicle for safety and warmth. Wait for help to arrive. If you are in an area with cell phone service, call for help. Make sure your phone is fully charged when you start your trip.

www.BigWhiteMtnInfo.com

Keep warm clothes, good winter boots and gloves with you in the car (not in the trunk) in case you get stuck and need to leave the car for help or come to the assistance of others.

12

Use heaters and rear-window defrosters only as long as needed. Excessive use of heaters, defrosters and other electrical devices can place added strain on your battery. During the day, tie a brightly-coloured cloth to your antenna to alert police or rescuers to your predicament. At night, use your vehicle's emergency flashers. Especially around dawn, dusk and at night, wildlife (such as deer, moose, bear) frequent the sides of the road, so be cautious.

TRAFFIC SAFETY & ROAD CONDITIONS When in Canada, please drive on the right side of the road and keep your headlights on day and night! Proof of auto insurance is required. Seat belt use is mandatory for all passengers. Child car seats must be used for children under 40 pounds. Motorcycles cannot share a lane and safety helmets for drivers and passengers are mandatory. It is against the law to drive while using a hand-held cell phone; you must use a hands-free device. It is also a criminal offense to smoke in a vehicle with children younger than 16.

PRE-PLANNING • TRANSPORTATION

TIPS FOR THE ROAD

Under new law, drivers who blow above .08 or refuse to provide a breath sample will face an immediate 90-day driving ban and a $500 fine. A word about snowplow drivers: they’re up when you’re asleep and work in conditions you avoid in order to clear your way to the slopes. So be kind, give the plow plenty of room and keep your beams low. The maximum speed limit in Canada is 50km/hr (30mph) in cities, and 100 km/hr (60mph) on highways. Other speed limits are clearly posted. For up-to-date hwy conditions, please see the BC Hwy’s Ministry road report at www.drivebc.ca

ACTIVITIES • KIDS

As a parent, I want to know my kids are having a great time and at Big White Ski Resort, I know they are! There are so many things for kids of all ages to do. Ski Canada has rated The Big White Ski Resort Kid's Centre as the “Best Resort Feature for Kids in Canada.” The UK’s London Daily Mail rated it one of the Top 5 in the World!! Whether they are skiing with you or you have them registered in lessons, your kids will remember the fun times they had at Big White for the rest of their lives. And remember, safety is important! Big White Ski Resort offers a complimentary helmet program to protect your child as they master the slopes. If your kids are aged 18 months to 5 years and are too small for skiing or just can’t handle a full day on the slopes, the Tot Town Daycare is perfect. It was voted “Best Place to be Abandoned by Your Parents” by Ski Canada Magazine. Each day is unique, exciting and filled with activities and adventures.

www.BigWhiteMtnInfo.com

The evening programs provide a fun time for kids and allow parents to enjoy night skiing or a night out on their own - check our Après Ski section for ideas (pg 28-31).

Even though this is a ski resort, there's a lot more to do than just ski or board! The Club Penguin Mega Snow Coaster is a blast for kids; all they need is to be able to ride in their own tube. My kids love the Mini Z's. They feel like grown ups riding on their own kid's size snowmobile. The horse-drawn sleigh ride is a family favorite for all generations and we will never forget the fun we had on our dog-sled tour. There's a reason Big White Ski Resort was voted "Family Ski Resort of the Year" by Snow Action Magazine there's so many ways to create life-long family memories! WINES AT BIG WHITE

IT’S A WINTER WINEDERLAND AT BIG WHITE

Great wine tasting doesn’t stop when the mercury drops. Combine champagne powder at Big White with a robust red or refreshing white wine.

OKANAGAN ICEWINE

www.BigWhiteMtnInfo.com

Ice wine, or Icewine, is traditionally a unique, sweet wine produced from the juice of naturally frozen grapes that are grown and picked in ideal Canadian winter conditions. Icewine grapes must freeze naturally and are picked in winter temperatures of –8ºC (18 Fº) or lower producing Icewines of international distinction. They have very intense flavours, a sweet and rich bouquet, with a smoothness uncomparable to other wines.

SHOPPING

LOOK GREAT ON OR OFF THE HILL! Big White Ski Resort has some exceptional retail stores. Visit Ski Dazzle, The Village Rider, Down Under, Dizzy’s, Envy Boutique and the NEW Big White Kids for all you need. Or if you want a shopping experience off the mountain, check out the NEW One Boardshop by Island Snow & Deviate for the Okanagan’s best selection of snowboard gear with full service board shop, waxing, tuning and repairs. (by Kelowna Yamaha Hwy 97N) And while you’re in Kelowna be sure to visit Wild Mountain for the largest selection of North Face gear and apparel (in Downtown Kelowna). Just a bit further on the Westside is Mojoz Surf N’ Snow definitely worth the trip or visit their website!

CLOTHING Wearing clothing designed specifically to keep you warm and dry when playing outdoors can make a big difference. Versatile, functional winter apparel is worth the investment. Here is basic information about dressing for winter: BOOTS These are a very important item as they are the connection between you and the board. You want the boots to fit firmly around your foot but not to cut off your circulation or press too hard on nerves and make your feet numb. SOCKS Your socks should be warm but thin. Try to ensure your socks will fit well and not be prone to wrinkling up because there is nothing worse than a sock wrinkle pushing on your foot in a tight boot. PANTS You want these to be waterproof! You will be sitting on a chair-lift that may have snow on it or you might fall into the snow, etc. You will feel really cold and miserable if you get wet so go waterproof.

www.BigWhiteMtnInfo.com

JACKET You will want a jacket you can close up against the cold weather - preferably zip up

SHOPPING around the neck and use a hood to snuggle into. A down jacket can also be good. THERMAL UNDERWEAR Even if it is warm, and you do not need this for warmth, you may want to consider wearing a layer of thermal underwear to remove moisture from your skin. HEADWEAR Up to 60 percent of the body's heat can escape from an uncovered head. This is why wearing a hat or headband is essential when it's cold; best made from fleece or wool. Helmets are very important for safety. Not only do they protect the head during falls, but they also provide warmth. A fleece neck gaiter (like a collar) or facemask is a must on very cold days. SUNGLASSES AND GOGGLES Snow, because it is a reflective surface, makes ultraviolet (UV) rays stronger. On sunny days, sunglasses are essential to protect the eyes. On flat-light days or when it's snowing, goggles are vital. Special lens colors increase the contrast in order to properly discern terrain features.
