Reasons to

BE PROUD You might recognize Kelsey Serwa – after all, she was the Gold Medal Champion in the Ski Cross at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea! Kelsey grew up skiing at Big White, with her grandfather, Cliff Serwa. Cliff cofounded the resort in the early 1960s. Having started skiing as soon as she could walk, Kelsey was named to the Women’s National Development Team for Canada in 2008. From there, Kelsey went from strength to strength earning 18 World Cup podium finishes, a Silver Medal at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia, and a gold medal at the X Games in 2016. KELSEY SAYS MY PRE-RACE RITUAL IS ... “To knock out a good warm-up before breakfast and heading out on the hill.” WORDS TO LIVE BY ... “Be where your feet are.” IN MY GYM BAG YOU'LL FIND ... “A Lululemon insulated water bottle, a SoLo energy bar and a stinky pair of socks.” TO UNWIND ... “I enjoy biking, surfing, playing ukulele, woodburning, yoga/meditation, stretching and watching all the scary movies.” MY FAVOURITE RUN AT BIG WHITE IS ... “Born to Run. It is one of my favourite runs because it starts off quite mellow, freckled with conifers before it opens up and drops into a fall-line pitch. There are also fun little hits on the side of the trail with options to hop in and out of the glades on either side.”

BIG WHITE MOUNTAIN - HISTORY

Reasons to

LOOK BACK Let’s take a walk back through memory lane. In 1960, the snow conditions outside Kelowna were discovered and in 1963, Cliff Serwa and Doug Mervyn opened the mountain named Big White with just the Main T-Bar operating. In 1968, the first onmountain accommodation was constructed. Big White then remained largely unchanged until the 1970’s when the lift and trail structure grew along with other facilities. The Ridge Double Chair was installed in 1971 with the Easter Triple Chair coming in 1976 and the Powder Triple Chair installed in 1979. The Schumann family purchased Big White Ski Resort Ltd in 1985 with the goal of building a world-class ski resort. British Columbia’s first quad chairlift, The Plaza, was installed in 1986, and the Alpine T-Bar was moved and lengthened in 1987. The Cliff chair was added in 1988, and the Ridge Rocket – the resort’s first high-speed, detachable quad lift – was installed in 1989. The Bullet Chair came in 1990, with the Ridge Day Lodge also constructed in 1990, the Black Forest Chair in 1995 and the Village Centre Mall in 1996 along with the Kids Centre and Gem Lake Express Quad. 2000 saw the Happy Valley project begin with Happy Valley Day Lodge and the Adventure Park constructed and Lara’s Gondola installed. More recently, Big White has seen the addition of the Black Forest Day Lodge and, just this year, the replacement of the Powder Chair which was installed all the way back in 1979! With new lifts, more skiing terrain and future community infrastructure all in the future plans, we are all excited to see what comes next in the master plan for Big White. 11

Reasons to

STAY

A ski holiday is a magical way to bring families and friends together and create lasting memories. When planning your next trip, it’s essential to choose the right place to stay. Big White Ski Resort offers plenty of options with capacity for 17,000 guests in hotels, condominiums, private chalets and hostels. Are you looking for a quiet get-away with a private hot tub, or would you prefer to be right in the heart of the action? Either way, there’s something for everyone, whether you’re a solo traveller or a large group. Often you’ll find a fireplace in the shared lobby or restaurant, but for real luxury, consider booking a place with a fireplace in the room or suite. A perfect place to sip drinks, read and while away the time talking.

Chef Feature ROB WALKER

If you’ve ever dined at Kettle Valley Steakhouse, the Moose Lounge or The Woods, picked up a quick breakfast or lunch from The CAF or Clocktower Coffee Co., or stopped in for a warm meal at Black Forest Day Lodge, you’ve enjoyed a creation that’s overseen by Big White Ski Resort’s Executive Chef, Rob Walker. Rob Walker is one of Canada’s most accomplished chefs in BC. With over 15 years of culinary experience, Rob is an award-winning Chef that is well experienced in utilizing the plentiful products of the region to prepare incredible food. Rob is an active competitor in the culinary world, having won two gold medals in the Western Canadian Culinary Arts Festival and first place in the 2013 Sysco Chefs Black Box competition. Rob is now responsible for the culinary direction across all Big White operated food and beverage outlets. “I’m inspired by the concept of locally sourced, globally inspired food,” says Rob. “We want to support our local Okanagan farmers and artisans and bring it all back into our menu offerings. We’re really trying to change the culture of what ski hill food is – you can still get your cafeteria favourites, like poutine or chicken fingers, but you can also go and get an amazing salad, or a sandwich with healthy grains.” Rob is in the process of expanding on Big White’s gluten-free and vegan offerings, with custom trademarked logos soon to be consistently placed on menus across all Big White-operated outlets. In addition, all Big White outlets are soon to become Oceanwise-certified. THE WOODS Upscale, family dining in the heart of the Village In Village Centre Open from 11am daily | see page 58 & 61

Reasons to

SHRED

It’s called BIG White for a reason with 7,355 acres of which 2,765 is rideable terrain, an average of 750 cm / 24.5’ of epic Okanagan Champagne Powder, 118 runs, 5 powder bowls and seemingly endless glades. There’s always fresh tracks to be found. Big White certainly has it all for any snowboard enthusiast. The way the terrain wraps around the mountain means it’s incredibly snowboard friendly and fun for all skill levels! The tree riding is pure delight for any rider who likes to get off the groomed runs. With natural jumps and crowd free slopes, Big White is a mountain that free-riders become obsessed with. Big White’s roots in snowboarding go back 30 years with local pioneers. Freestyle skiing debuted at the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary and one of the first snowboard playgrounds appeared at Big White the same year. Today Big White continues to deliver with one of the country’s best terrain parks. In 2016, TELUS Park was named ‘One of the Best Terrain Parks in North America’ by USA TODAY 10 Best award. In 2018, Newschoolers named TELUS Park in the Top 5 Parks in the Northwest. The self-lifted park features a 700m chairlift so riders can hit lap after lap and is even open for night riding Thursday to Saturday. The TELUS Park playground includes a pipe, a variety of different sized jumps, an interesting flow of jib features and a public boarder and skier cross course. This past season, TELUS Park hosted an impressive 20 amateur sport events including rail jams, boarder cross and slopestyle as the resort continues to invest in developing athletes. One of the largest events is the Neil Edgeworth Memorial Banked Slalom which sees over 300 snowboarders competing over the two day event. This is the best weekend to be a snowboarder at Big White and you get to hang with the likes of Olympic Snowboard Champ Maëlle Ricker. 36

SAVOUR Calling all wine lovers! You're invited to the 11th Annual Big Reds Wine Festival, the wine-tasting event of the season. Big Reds features a wide selection of handcrafted wines made by the talented winemakers of the Okanagan region. The intimate atmosphere allows you to sample cellar-worthy wines while interacting with the winemakers in a relaxed and informal setting. Guests will have the opportunity to ask questions and learn about what makes these wines so uniquely 'Okanagan'. Whether you love your big Cabernets, complex Bordeaux style blends or "old world" style Pinot Noirs, you'll have the opportunity to sample new releases from notable, award-winning Okanagan wineries and a wide range of black grape varietals - such as Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Syrah, Malbec, and Petit Verdot. Big Reds is so popular that it features across two nights, December 7 and 8, from 7pm in the Village Centre Mall. Ticket cost $65 per person.
