VISITOR INFORMATION

WHAT TO WEAR !?! CLOTHING Wearing clothing designed specifically to keep you warm and dry when playing outdoors can make a big difference. Versatile, functional winter apparel is worth the investment. Here is basic information about dressing for winter: BOOTS These are a very important item as they are the connection between you and the board. You want the boots to fit firmly around your foot but not to cut off your circulation or press too hard on nerves and make your feet numb. SOCKS Your socks should be warm but thin. Try to ensure your socks will fit well and not be prone to wrinkling up because there is nothing worse than a sock wrinkle pushing on your foot in a tight boot. PANTS You want these to be waterproof! You will be sitting on a chair-lift that may have snow on it or you might fall into the snow, etc. You will feel really cold and miserable if you get wet so go waterproof. JACKET You will want a jacket you can close up against the cold weather - preferably zip up around the neck and use a hood to snuggle into. A down jacket can also be good. THERMAL UNDERWEAR Even if it is warm, and you do not need this for warmth, you may want to consider wearing a layer of thermal underwear to remove moisture from your skin. HEADWEAR Up to 60 percent of the body's heat can escape from an uncovered head. This is why wearing a hat or headband is essential when it's cold; best made from fleece or wool. Helmets are very important for safety. Not only do they protect the head during falls, but they also provide warmth. A fleece neck gaiter (like a collar) or facemask is a must on very cold days. SUNGLASSES AND GOGGLES Snow, because it is a reflective surface, makes ultraviolet (UV) rays stronger. On sunny days, sunglasses are essential to protect the eyes. On flat-light days or when it's snowing, goggles are vital. Special lens colors increase the contrast in order to properly discern terrain features. SALES TAX Currently there is a 12% Harmonized Sales Tax - HST. 2011/12 BIG WHITE MOUNTAIN

PRE-PLANNING YOUR TRIP

IT’S EASY TO GET HERE! CANADIAN CUSTOMS INFORMATION

SO NOW YOU’VE PLANNED YOUR VACATION!

CANADA’S ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:

Your flight is booked, reservations are made and your ski tickets are bought. But before you get too excited about riding to the top of the ski lift, you should take care of a few other important details.

1. What type of identification will I need to present to Canada Customs? Canada’s entry requirements require that every visitor from out of the country needs a valid passport. Some travellers require a visa to travel to Canada. Parents who share custody of their children should carry copies of the legal custody documents. 2. Is there anything that I can’t bring into Canada? Here is a brief list of some items you are prohibited to bring into the country: firearms and/or offensive weapons, drugs, certain fruits and/or plants that could contain harmful pests and diseases and meat. As long as you meet the age requirement of 19 yrs, you can bring up to 40oz. of liquor, 52oz. of wine, or 24 containers of beer. From the airport, either rent a car and have the flexibility for day trips or if you aren't comfortable driving in snow, take a taxi, prebook a shuttle or book a limousine and arrive in luxury. See pages 10-11. Once you arrive at Big White, most everything is within walking distance. On-hill shuttle service is available or look for bus stop icons on the maps.

There's a lot to do to get ready for your trip to Big White Ski Resort and we want to make it easier for you. First is planning how to get here. Big White Ski Resort is less than an hour’s drive, 56 km (35 mi) southeast of Kelowna, the largest city in the Okanagan Valley, making it easily accessible. From Kelowna, follow Highway 33 for 32 km (20 mi) until you reach Big White Road. Drive another 24 km (15 mi) to the main village. If you need to fly, the Kelowna International Airport is serviced by many Canadian airlines: Air Canada, WestJet, Horizon Air (Alaska Airlines), Horizon Air Support, and Central Mountain Air. These airlines partner with many international carriers and fly nonstop to Kelowna from Toronto, Vancouver,

Victoria, Prince George, Calgary, Edmonton, Vegas, Phoenix and Seattle. Charter services are also available at the Shell Aero Centre (private aircraft terminal) and other locations throughout Kelowna. Kelowna International Airport is the biggest and busiest in the BC Interior and the 10th busiest in Canada with a passenger count of almost 1.4 million in 2010. A $50.5 million phased expansion is underway to prepare for an increase to 1.6 million passengers by 2015. The runway has been extended from 2225 m (7300 ft) to 2743 m (9000 ft). International flights no longer have to connect through Calgary or Vancouver to reach Kelowna. This places Kelowna as the third international gateway in BC.

PRE-PLANNING • TRANSPORTATION

FLYING TO KELOWNA AND BIG WHITE

PRE-PLANNING • TRANSPORTATION

TIPS FOR DRIVING IN THE SNOW Weather conditions can be unpredictable, placing extra demands on your vehicle and your driving skills. Ensure you are well prepared for winter roads and always adjust your driving speed to existing conditions. Be sure to fill up your gas tank before you leave Kelowna, there is no gas station at Big White. Stay alert, slow down, and stay in control...the three key elements of safe winter driving. Clear snow and ice from all windows, lights, mirrors, and the roof. After starting your vehicle, wait for the fog to clear from the interior of the windows so you will have good visibility. Drive for the conditions, not the speed limit. Maintain a safe distance between your vehicle and others. Signal your turns and lane changes well in advance. Start off slow, stop and steer gently. Gear down instead of braking, especially when driving down hills. Always drive with your lights on. You must have snow tires, all four the same. If you have chains, make sure you have practiced installing them before the need arises. Top up your windshield washer reservoir regularly and carry spare fluid with you, as road spray can reduce visibility in seconds. If you get stuck or stranded, don’t panic. Stay with your vehicle for safety and warmth. Wait for help to arrive. If you are in an area with cell phone service, call for help. Make sure your phone is fully charged when you start your trip. Keep warm clothes, good winter boots and gloves with you in the car (not in the trunk) in case you get stuck and need to leave the car for help or come to the assistance of others. Use heaters and rear-window defrosters only as long as needed. Excessive use of heaters, defrosters and other electrical devices can place added strain on your battery. During the day, tie a brightly-coloured cloth to your antenna to alert police or rescuers to your predicament. At night, use your vehicle's emergency flashers. Especially around dawn, dusk and at night, wildlife (such as deer, moose, bear) frequent the sides of the road, so be cautious. 12

PRE-PLANNING • TRANSPORTATION

THE ROAD TRAFFIC SAFETY & ROAD CONDITIONS When in Canada, please drive on the right side of the road and keep your headlights on day and night! Proof of auto insurance is required. Seat belt use is mandatory for all passengers. Child car seats must be used for children under 40 pounds. Motorcycles cannot share a lane, and safety helmets for drivers and passengers are mandatory. It is against the law to drive while using a hand-held cell phone; you must use a hands-free device. It is also a criminal offense to smoke in a vehicle with children younger than 16. Under new law, drivers who blow above .08 or refuse to provide a breath sample will face an immediate 90-day driving ban and a $500 fine. A word about snowplow drivers: they’re up when you’re asleep and work in conditions you avoid in order to clear your way to the slopes. So be kind, give the plow plenty of room and keep your beams low. The maximum speed limit in Canada is 50km/hr (30mph) in cities, and 100 km/hr (60mph) on highways. Other speed limits are clearly posted. For up-to-date highway conditions, please see the BC Highways Ministry road report at www.drivebc.ca

PRE-PLANNING • GROCERIES

WHAT’S FOR DINNER? Try this easy recipe, there’s nothing that says comfort like a homemade bowl of soup Potato and Leek Cheddar Soup 4 large potatoes 2 leeks 1 onion 1 piece celery Half bunch parsley 1 liter of chicken stock 1 liter water Salt and pepper Half cup whipping cream Cheddar Puff pastry Start with your celery and onions until tender, add your leeks and cook until soft. Add your potatoes, parsley, chicken stock and water, cook on medium heat until the potatoes are fully cooked watching so it does not stick to the bottom. Season with salt and pepper and add a touch of cream if you wish, not milk. Add your cheddar or any other cheeses you wish to taste, (Swiss/Emmental can be very nice). Puff pastry rolled into circles to fit over the soup bowl. Ladle the hot soup into your bowls, egg wash the bowls to stick the puff pastry on top. Bake until the puff pastry if fully cooked, around 20 minutes. Note: this puff pastry idea can be used on French onion soup also. PRE-PLANNING • GROCERIES

PLANNING AHEAD Are you staying at Big White for an extended period of time? If so, you will want to pre-plan some of your meals. There are some great restaurants in the Village but some nights you might want to stay home for dinner. Most units are equipped with full kitchens. Try the easy recipe in this section and wow your family and friends. There are lots of options: Stop in at IGA Marketplace in the Willow Park Shopping Centre on Hwy #33 on your way to Big White to pick up all your food and beverage needs or visit Big White’s local grocery store for a wide variety of fresh foods. You may also enjoy having someone else take care of your meals; all you have to do is order, then cook or bake! Have a local company like Smart Start Meals or Market Place IGA deliver your shopping needs to your rental unit. Whether you feel like gourmet food or a pizza night, local restaurants provide takeout. See phone numbers and more information in our “Dining, Restaurants and Pubs” Section. Pages 34 to 38.

ACCOMMODATIONS

WHEREVER YOU STAY, WE ARE SURE YOU WILL ENJOY YOUR VACATION! There is nothing quite so magical as a ski holiday to bring families and friends together and create memories that will last a lifetime. When planning your ski vacation, an important aspect of your trip will be choosing where you stay. Big White Ski Resort offers plenty of options with capacity for 17,000 guests in hotels, condominiums, private chalets and hostel. Be sure to check out all of the different rental agencies for the perfect place. You will want to book early for peak times: Christmas, President’s Week and Spring Breaks. Some rental agencies offer specials during non-peak times and some include ski passes or optional catering. Decide what is important to your group; true ski-in/ski-out access, proximity to the Village or other activities. Are you looking for a quiet get-away or do you want to be a part of the action? The fresh, crisp mountain air and activities seem to clear away your winter blues. And don’t worry about the kids! Voted “Best Place to be Abandoned by Your Parents,” the Tot Town Daycare is ideal for the pre-ski child or the child who does not wish to ski the whole day. All units are a part of a strata - a collective of individual units that are a part of a common property. A strata council is elected to be the managing body of the strata and to make everyday decisions that affect the whole. 16

ACTIVITIES • KIDS

As a parent, I want to know my kids are having a great time and at Big White Ski Resort, I know they are! There are so many things for kids of all ages to do. Ski Canada has rated The Big White Ski Resort Kid's Centre as the “Best Resort Feature for Kids in Canada.” The UK’s London Daily Mail rated it one of the top 5 in the world! Whether they are skiing with you or you have them registered in lessons, your kids will remember the fun times they had at Big White for the rest of their lives. And remember, safety is important! Big White Ski Resort offers a complimentary helmet program to protect your child as they master the slopes. If your kids are aged 18 months to 6 years and are too small for skiing or just can’t handle a full day on the slopes, the Tot Town Daycare is perfect. It was voted “Best Place to be Abandoned by Your Parents” by Ski Canada Magazine. The evening programs provide a fun time for kids and allow parents to enjoy night skiing or a night out on their own - check our Après Ski section for ideas (pg 28-31). Even though this is a ski resort, there's a lot more to do than just ski or board! The Mega Snow Coaster is a blast for kids; all they need is to be able to ride in their own tube. My five and eight year olds love the Mini Z's. They feel like grown ups riding on their own kid's size snowmobile. The horse-drawn sleigh ride is a family favorite for all generations and we will never forget the fun we had on our dog-sled tour. My kids have also started to skate on the outdoor ice rink in Happy Valley and I’m sure in just a few years, will be playing a truly Canadian sport with their dad and uncles... HOCKEY! Katie Neumann

These events will showcase the best wines that the Okanagan Valley is producing and give you an opportunity to taste the variety, quality and individuality coming from this area. Great wine tasting doesn’t stop when the mercury drops. Combine champagne powder at Big White with a robust red or refreshing white wine.

OKANAGAN ICEWINE Ice wine, or Icewine, is traditionally a unique, sweet wine produced from the juice of naturally frozen grapes that are grown and picked in ideal Canadian winter conditions. Icewine grapes must freeze naturally and are picked in winter temperatures of –8ºC (18 Fº) or lower producing Icewines of international distinction. They have very intense flavours, a sweet and rich bouquet, with a smoothness uncomparable to other wines. Mission Hill Icewine shown here
