West Kelowna is the home of the Westside Wine Trail, comprised of 9 wineries including the famous lakeside views of Quails' Gate Winery and other hidden gems scattered along the Boucherie Bench and the slopes of Westbank. West Kelowna also hosts 2 executive 18 hole golf courses, a championship natural grass putting course as well as numerous beaches, scenic parks and hiking trails. The Johnson Bentley Memorial Aquatic Centre is the main recreational facility and includes a 25m swimming pool and skateboard park. The Mount Boucherie Community Centre includes Royal LePage Place, home to the BCHL “Westside Warriors” as well as many
youth hockey camps and tournaments. This facility provides a maximum capacity of 1,520 people plus standing room and is a venue for concerts, tradeshows and community events. In summer, there are fruit stands and orchards galore! Gellatly Bay wharf now has a new half-million dollar replica wharf that will be safer and will include two lighted towers, a three-metre high jumping platform, a small zipline, and a floating platform. The District of West Kelowna (formerly known as Westbank) is located just 10 minutes south of Kelowna and was incorporated in 2007. It is comprised of the communities of Westbank, Shannon Lake, Glenrosa, Casa Loma, West Kelowna Estates, Rose Valley and Lakeview Heights. The community of Westbank has close to half the total population of 31,212. The new five lane William R. Bennett Bridge has relieved Hwy congestion, increased economic activity in the area and attracted many new Shopping Centres. It has been projected that an average of 69,000 vehicles per day will pass over the bridge by 2017, an increased capacity of 23,000. Also, a new private, luxury hospital is coming on Westbank First Nation land.

The municipality of Peachland is situated on the shores of Okanagan Lake, 10km south of West Kelowna and directly opposite Squally Point in Okanagan Mountain Park, the legendary home of the Ogopogo. A quaint lakeside community of 5,153 people, Peachland offers some of the Valley's most spectacular lake views. Its downtown core on Beach Avenue sits on the waterfront. There is a tranquil promenade that parallels the road and allows visitors and locals alike to explore shops, boutiques and popular restaurants. Parking is free all along Beach Avenue. Peachland offers 11km of continuous public waterfront with a marina day wharf, boat launching, as well as the lifeguard supervised Swim Bay across the road from the town's Community Centre. The Peachland Centre shopping mall is located along Hwy 97 above the downtown core and offers most essential services.

A great outdoor activity for all ages is the walk to Hardy Falls at the south end of Peachland. It is especially spectacular in September when hundreds of Kokanee salmon swim upstream to spawn. For those with more challenging hiking appetites, try the 5km hike to Pincushion Mountain for unparalleled valley vistas. The other town attractions include the Peachland Museum (on Beach Ave) and Parrot Island Sanctuary, a sanctuary for rescued parrots. The Greata Ranch Wine Shop will be closed for the 2015
season while renovations are underway. The Fitzpatrick Family, Proprietors, look forward to seeing you at their new Sparkling Wine facilities in April 2016. Although wine touring, golf, swimming, hiking, boating and ATV Tours are popular attractions, Peachland also has a new exciting attraction to try. “Get High at ZipZone” is the tag line for Peachland’s newest Adventure Park located 8km up Princeton Avenue and featuring some of the highest ziplines in Canada. The area known as Peachland was first settled by the Lambly brothers who owned much of the land. In 1898, J.M. Robinson, a Manitoba developer established a townsite and named it Peachland because of the delicious fruit grown. The history of Peachland is depicted in the Peachland Museum, the community’s former Baptist Church constructed in 1910.

A true treasure lies just south of Kelowna Myra Canyon, a lovingly restored section of the Kettle Valley Railway Trail originally completed in 1916. This 19km (12mi) round trip journey takes you over 18 wooden trestles and through two tunnels as you enjoy commanding views of the horseshoe shaped valley from 3000 ft above Kelowna (915m). This gently sloped trail is accessible for hikers and bikers and is also dog friendly. It has been described as one of the most beautiful sections of the Trans Canada Trail. The Kettle Valley Railway is an important part of BC history, being a crucial route when the deposits of copper, silver and gold were discovered in the Interior. Andrew McCullough, a Canadian Pacific Railway engineer, led the crews that negotiated through the canyons and built the many trestles, some as much as 180 ft (55m) in length. It took them five years to complete the job. For visitors today, there are numerous signposts giving more historical and ecological information along the way. The last train ran through Myra Canyon in 1972. The conversion of the rails to trails began twenty years later when the Myra Canyon Trestle Restoration Society was formed to make the trails safe for recreational use. In 2003, the trestles were designated a national heritage site. Later that year 12 of the trestles were damaged in the Okanagan Mountain Park fire. By 2008 thanks to much tireless work on reconstruction the Myra Canyon trestles were reopened. Community groups and individuals continue to volunteer with the Society to maintain the trail today.

THE LEGEND OF OGOPOGO The Ogopogo was named by the Vancouver Province newspaper on August 24, 1926 after an English music hall song called Ogopogo which was popular in the 1920's. The Okanagan First Nations people called the Ogopogo "N'HAATIK" which translates as "Lake Serpent Spirit". Folklore has it that the “Lake Serpent” was said to live in a cave near Rattlesnake Island and has claimed many lives.
The Ogopogo is said to be green in D colour with a horse or goat like head that swallows its prey whole. Its snake like body is one to two feet wide, and between 15 and 70 feet long. When swimming near the surface of the lake the Ogopogo's humps have been seen propelled above the water's surface.
