WELCOME TO BIG WHITE Discover a true Canadian experience at Big White Ski Resort. Located in the picturesque Okanagan Valley, Big White is blessed with a mild sunny climate, dry fluffy powder and endless activities.

www.BigWhiteMtnInfo.com

It’s no wonder Big White’s motto is, "It's the Snow”, with an average snowfall of 750cm (24.5 feet) of champagne powder blanketing the 2,765 acres of skiable terrain each year. In fact, the snow is so impressive, Big White has been awarded with “The best place to go for quality snow” by Condé Nast the World’s premiere travel magazine.

PRE-PLANNING • TRANSPORTATION

TIPS FOR THE ROAD PARKING IS FREE AT BIG WHITE! Big White Ski Resort is 56 km (35 miles) South East of Kelowna, the largest city in the Okanagan. From Kelowna, follow Highway 33 for 32 km (20 miles) until you reach Big White Road. Another 24 km (15 miles) and you will arrive in the main village.

www.BigWhiteMtnInfo.com

If you aren't comfortable driving in snow, see these ads for some great options! If you do plan to travel British Columbia roadways when wintry conditions are a possibility, you should carry chains or have snow tires. When you come to a posted sign on the highway stating “Winter Tires or Chains Are Required Beyond This Point”, you must be ready to install chains or have proper winter tread tires before proceeding.

pavement. Be extra cautious in danger zones: intersections, lane changes, turns and stops. In snow, tires barely grab the road, so accelerate, turn and stop gently. If ice and bare patches alternate, brake in the bare spots and coast over the ice. Apply that same rationale to bridges, which freeze before roadways, and try to reach “bridge speed” before you get there. Four-wheel-drive owners: even though your system is great for moving around in the snow, it doesn’t help you slow down! Word to the wise: slow down safely!

DRIVING IN THE SNOW

A word about snowplow drivers. They’re up when you’re asleep, work in conditions you avoid in order to clear your way to the slopes. So be kind, give the plow plenty of room and keep your beams low. Above all, be like a tortoise and practice patience.

Speed limits are for dry conditions. Keep in mind that it can take about three times as long, or as far, to stop on snow and ice than it does on dry

For up-to-date highway conditions, please see the BC Hwy’s Ministry road report at www.drivebc.ca.

WHAT’S NEW? LOOSE MOOSE EMPORIUM KIDS BOUTIQUE The Loose Moose Emporium is an extension of Big White’s world famous Kids Centre. Chock full of kids ski clothing, winter apparel and an international candy selection

SHOPPING

Big White Ski Resort has some exceptional retail stores. Visit Ski Dazzle, The Village Rider, Down Under, Dizzy’s, Envy Boutique and the NEW Loose Moose Emporium for all you need. Or if you want a shopping experience off the mountain, check out One Boardshop by IslandSnow and Deviate for the Okanagan’s best selection of snowboard gear with full service board shop, waxing, tuning and repairs. (In the “Big Black Building” across from Staples). See ad page 64. While you’re in Kelowna be sure to visit Wild Mountain, Downtown Kelowna. “Premium mountain brands for passionate Outdoor People”. See ad page 30.

CLOTHING Wearing clothing designed specifically to keep you warm and dry when playing outdoors can make a big difference. Versatile, functional winter apparel is worth the investment. Here is basic information about dressing for winter: BOOTS These are a very important item as they are the connection between you and the board. You want the boots to fit firmly around your foot but not to cut off your circulation or press too hard on nerves and make your feet numb. SOCKS Your socks should be warm but thin. Try to ensure your socks will fit well and not be prone to wrinkling up because there is nothing worse than a sock wrinkle pushing on your foot in a tight boot. PANTS You want these to be waterproof! You will be sitting on a chair-lift that may have snow on it or you might fall into the snow, etc. You will feel really cold and miserable if you get wet so go waterproof. JACKET You will want a jacket you can close up against the cold weather - preferably zip up around the neck and use a hood to snuggle into. A down jacket can also be good. THERMAL UNDERWEAR Even if it is warm, and you do not need this for warmth, you may want to consider wearing a layer of thermal underwear to remove moisture from your skin. HEADWEAR Up to 60 percent of the body's heat can escape from an uncovered head. This is why wearing a hat or headband is essential when it's cold; best made from fleece or wool. Helmets are very important for safety, not only do they protect the head during falls, but they also provide warmth. A fleece neck gaiter (like a collar) or facemask is a must on very cold days. SUNGLASSES AND GOGGLES Snow, because it is a reflective surface, makes ultraviolet (UV) rays stronger. On sunny days, sunglasses are essential to protect the eyes. On flat-light days or when it's snowing, goggles are vital. Special lens colors increase the contrast in order to properly discern terrain features. SALES TAX Currently there is a 12% Sales Tax - GST/PST.
