Qualifications: Candidate should first and foremost have a genuine interest in music marketing, event planning, and the entertainment business. Past experience working on marketing campaigns is a plus, but not required. MUSEUM OF THE MOVING IMAGE SUMMER INTERNSHIPS Internship Description: Museum of the Moving Image offers full-time, paid summer internships. Under the supervision of department heads, interns have the opportunity to learn about the full range of Museum operations and to work on projects related to the fall 2010 opening of the Museums renovated and expanded facility. Collection: Interns will assist in researching and cataloging objects to be made accessible online, and participate in the Museum’s open-source, web-based collection management software project. Development and Special Events: Interns will work with the Museums Director on preparations for gala events related to the opening of the expanded facility, and provide support for the Museums fundraising efforts. Digital Imaging/Photography: Interns will assist with the digital photography and scanning of Museum artifacts and the correction and editing of images. Digital Media: Interns will provide support for updates to interactive exhibits within the core exhibition Behind the Screen, and assist with the implementation of a new design for the Museums website. Film: Interns will work on the planning of film programs. Interns will also assist with content research for the website Moving Image Source, and with the preparation of editorial content for various program and exhibition related projects. SUMMER 2010 ARTS INTERNS Internship Description: The Arts Intern program places undergraduate students from diverse cultural backgrounds who have financial need in paid summer internships with New York City museums. Interns must either be New York City residents, or enrolled in a college or university within the five boroughs of New York City. Collections Management The Collections Management Intern will be responsible for the cataloging, digitization, and preservation of the Museums collection of more than 200 artifacts related to video game consoles, which include consoles, controllers, and games. By completing this project, the intern will gain experience in all facets of collections management, including: inventorying; research, cataloging, and description; rehousing and condition reporting; digitization; and storage. The intern also will be able to participate in the ongoing development of the open-source collections management software tool CollectionSpace. Candidates should be enrolled in an undergraduate program in American Studies, Media Studies, Popular Culture, American History, Material Culture, or a related field. Candidate should possess an interest and/or expertise in the history of digital media and/or video games, strong writing and time management skills, and proficiency with computers and online research. Digital Media Intern The Digital Media Intern will assist with upgrades to interactive exhibits for the Museum's grand reopening scheduled for Fall, 2010, as well as with the development of the Museum's new website. The Digital Media Intern's work will introduce him or her to the process through which interactive exhibits are created, from conception to installation. It will give the Intern exposure to the larger process of exhibition design and an introduction to the team responsible for planning and implementing changes to exhibitions. Candidates should have strong computer skills, an interest in technology, and some experience with HTML, PHP, MySQL, and Photoshop. The Intern should have excellent communication and writing skills and should be able to work independently, under the guidance of a supervisor. VIDEOGRAPHER Internship Description: We are currently looking for an intern to help us create a few short videos about our education programs. Specifically we are looking for 5 shorts for our website and one longer video to be used at our New Student Orientation. The student (s) need to know how to use a video camera and editing software. We have a video camera the intern may use (or they may use their own). We currently do not have any editing software. The final products must be in a format that can be uploaded to the IIRI website. As for learning outcomes, the intern would be the producer and editor of the films. The student would have to utilize their creative skills as the videos will be seen by many different audiences. However, the main goal is to make a product for particular customer (IIRI). The intern will also get a firsthand look into the workings of a non-profit focused on cultural diversity. The student must be willing and capable to work with people from all over the world who have varying spoken English ability. (If the intern is fluent in Spanish that would be helpful, but it is not required). The intern would be able to use these videos in their portfolio for graduate school or employment. I would like to complete the project this spring semester. I would be open to working with just one student, or a group. However, the students must have a flexible schedule as the filming of classes, students and teachers would vary as we offer classes morning, evening and Saturday. I am happy to work out a particular schedule with whoever chooses to take on the project. SSHSA INTERN Internship Description: SSHSA has a variety of functions that an intern can pursue dependent upon our need at the time and the skill level and interest of the applicant. The need, interest, and the skill level of the applicant will also correspond to the ability to pay the applicant wages and at what level those wages will be paid. Wages, if feasible, will be funded through an hourly range of $8-$12 p/h or a fixed stipend may also be implemented. This internship will provide a student with a hands-on experience in the non profit sector and the various duties, tasks, goals, and strategies implemented on a daily basis. SSHSA Internship Job Descriptions: Assisting in the office: Assist with daily office activities which can involve data processing, answering phone, photo copying, and general clerical work. Software that may be used: PastPerfect museum software, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and scanning (training available). Basic internet and typing skills required. Processing Museum Collections: As we receive a number of collections that need to be processed and catalogued, we frequently need help processing and accessioning these items. Duties will include handling all items with care, identifying them, describing them, and inputting info into a data tracking system (training available). Historical Research and Photo Reproduction: This job involves researching of a specific topic and/or vessels and fulfilling requests from our members and the general public. In many cases, the intern will be responsible for identifying sources in our collection of over 400,000 images in an access database, locating them, and scanning and reproducing them for resale. A general scanning knowledge is preferred; however, familiarity with Photoshop and other related software is helpful (training available). Marketing & Advertising: SSHSA publishes a quarterly journal titled "Steamboat Bill" and has done so since 1940. The intern may assist with identifying potential new advertisers and work to help grow advertising by outreach to potential clients and creating media kits to be mailed. Misc. Jobs: As a small private non-profit certified 501 (c) 3 organization; SSHSA has a variety of tasks that need to be completed at any one time. Above are the most common ones that we are seeking fulfillment for, but an intern should be available and willing to accommodate a variety of tasks as they arise from assisting in fundraising, communications, and/or membership serves.
