Iedereen die It zag heeft een hekel aan clowns (wat op zich, gezien het verhaal - een clown die kinderen terroriseert - ook best logisch is). Ik had genoeg aan een plaatje van It om voorgoed een gloeiende hekel aan clowns te hebben. Ook ken ik een jongen die als kind, zittend in een buggy, zo ontzettend aan het schrikken gemaakt is door een clown (het was vast niet zo bedoeld) dat hij er nog nachtmerries van heeft. En, hoe prachtig het initiatief ook is, van een Clinic Clown aan mijn bed zou ik me zeker niet beter gaan voelen. Waarom roepen clowns zo’n weerstand op? Stephen King is echt niet de enige die de link legde tussen ‘clown’ en ‘eng’. Komt het door de schmink? Door de geveinsde domdoenerij? Of door de grootschalige belastingontduiking? (Bassie en Adriaantje reden in het echt in een veel mooiere auto dan die afstandse Honda Prelude, lieve jongens en meisjes!) De tijd heeft de magie van het circus ook wel een beetje ingehaald. (Bedreigde) diersoorten die de wereld rondgereden worden in kleine hokken en kunstjes moeten doen wordt gelukkig niet langer als (artistiek) verantwoord gekwalificeerd en sinds Hans Klok met zijn windmachine hele treinstellen wegtovert lijkt het circus een achterhaald concept geworden te zijn. Maar waarom dan een thema over het circus? Omdat het papieren circus nostalgisch, feestelijk, diervriendelijk, en voor hen met een serieuze fobie, clownvrij is. En omdat we bij Oh Marie! in serieuze feeststemming zijn omdat we deze maand 1 jaar bestaan. En omdat het maken van een magazine op z’n zachtst gezegd een behoorlijk circus is. Ieder nummer ben ik bang dat we al het werk niet op tijd afkrijgen. Traditiegetrouw zit of staat er bij iedere kindermode shoot van Anki en Marieke een kind in een hondendrol. Blijkt de Zelfmaker opmaaktechnisch best wel een bitch te zijn en maak ik foto’s van een mooie setting... met onze kat prominent in beeld. (Ze heeft een aandachtsprobleem, zoals iedere kat.) Van al die stress achter de schermen merk jij als lezer echter, zoals dat bij een goed optreden hoort, helemaal niks. Ik kan dus alleen maar afsluiten met de woorden: Licht uit, spot aan...(zit u lekker?).... Dames en heren, welkom bij het circus!
Every person that saw It hates clowns. Which is of course, given its synopsis - a scary clown that terrorizes a bunch of children - not so strange. One glance at a picture of It was enough for me to hate clowns forever and ever. I know this story of a little boy that was just chillin’ in his buggy, minding his own business, when a clown jumped in front of him in an attempt to make him laugh. Instead of that, he scared the living daylights out of the poor child. Now a grown-up, the thought of a clown will probably still make the boy want to pee his pants. Why are clowns scary? Stephen King wasn’t the only one that linked those two together. Is it the make-up? Their transgressive behavior that makes us feel uncomfortable? Why on earth would a grown-up want to put on big floppy shoes and pretending he’s constantly tripping over them? What’s the fun in that? Beats me, really. The whole concept of the circus has become a bit prehistoric hasn’t it? People’s opinion about wild animals being carried around the world in tiny carriages and letting them do tricks is rapidly changing, in favor of the animals. And since David Copperfield magically made trains disappear, summoning a dove from a high hat isn’t that impressing anymore either. The world has grown up and so has the Industry of Make Believe. Why a theme about Circus then? Because on paper, the circus is still a happy one (and, for those with serious clown-phobia, a clown free one). And boy, we are happy here at Oh Marie! since we celebrate our first anniversary this month. Secondly, making a magazine is a bit of circus too, you know. Each issue I’m nervous we won’t get the job done in time. Traditionally a child sits or stands in a pile of dog poo during one of Anki’s and Marieke’s child fashion shoots. Turns out the DIY is graphicly speaking a bit of a bitch. And do I shoot about ten photographs featuring our cat instead of the set that’s behind her (our cat has serious attention issues, like all cats). But you, my dear reader, won’t notice anything about the stress behind the scenes, as you won’t in a real circus. And that’s how it’s supposed to be. All I want to say to you now is: sit back, relax… and welcome to the circus! Marlous xx

Photography
In ieder nummer vraagt Oh Marie! een fotograaf met een voorliefde voor analoge fotografie zijn of haar lievelingsfoto te analyseren. In dit nummer vertelt Hanke over het gouden uur waarop ze deze foto van haar lief nam. "Een favoriete foto kiezen is moeilijk, ik heb meer een 'lievelingsfoto van dit moment', zoals ik dat noem. Zo vind ik het ook altijd moeilijk om één lievelingsliedje of lievelingsfilm te kiezen, omdat dat erg afhangt van hoe ik me voel en wat me op dat moment aanspreekt. Zo hou ik in de winter bijvoorbeeld van hele andere dingen dan in de zomer. Maar ik dwaal af. Ik heb deze foto van mijn lief gemaakt tijdens onze meest recente vakantie in Porto. Als fotograaf zijnde is de avondzon de hemel voor mij, het geeft zulk prachtig zacht en warm licht. Dat laatste uur voor de zon ondergaat wordt ook wel het gouden uur genoemd. Ik ben er dol op! Het liefst zou ik elke fotoshoot in zulk licht fotograferen, alhoewel dat op den duur ook weer een beetje saai zou worden natuurlijk. Bovendien heb je in Nederland maar een aantal maanden per jaar zulk licht, je moet echt een beetje geluk hebben. Meestal hebben lenzen ook moeite met focussen bij dergelijk licht, dat moet je echt even onder de knie krijgen. Ik heb deze foto minimaal bewerkt, enkel een beetje warmer gemaakt van kleur. Hij is ook niet geposeerd, mijn lief was zich er niet bewust van dat ik hem op de foto zette. Als ik naar deze foto kijk kan ik heel makkelijk dat moment weer terughalen: een nieuwe stad, een zomeravond, de zon op mijn gezicht, de frisse wind van de oceaan, het geluid van de golven op de rotsen, niets aan mijn hoofd behalve waar we een hapje zullen gaan eten. Dat maakt een foto bijzonder voor mij: het moment dat erin gevangen zit, de sfeer. De magie om steeds een herinnering opnieuw te beleven. Óp naar een nieuwe lievelingsfoto!”
In every issue of Oh Marie! a photographer with a love for old, analogue camera’s tells the story behind his or her favourite picture. In this issue Hanke tells about the golden moment when she shot this photo of her love. I don’t have one all-time favourite photo. With every special moment I capture, a photo can become my number one for a while. For the same reason I find it hard to choose one favourite song or movie, it just depends on how I feel, or even what season it is. Anyway. I shot my current favourite photo on a recent trip to Porto. As a photographer, the evening sun is heaven for me, it gives everything a beautiful soft glow. I’m so very fond of these last hours of sunlight (which they call the Golden Hour) that if I had it my way, I’d shoot every single picture during this time of day. But then again, that would become a bit boring too, won’t it? In The Netherlands we do not have this kind of sunlight the year round, you need to have a bit of luck. Most lenses have difficulties focusing with this kind of light too, you need to practice a bit before you can shoot a good photo in this particular kind of light. This photo isn’t edited at all (I only added a tad bit of warmth to its colour), nor was it staged. My love wasn’t aware that I was taking pictures of him. When I look at this photo, I’m immediately back at that particular moment of being in a new city on a summer’s eve. I can almost feel the sun’s warmth on my faceagain, feel the ocean breeze, the sound of the waves crashing on the beach andthat free feeling of having nothing on my mind except for where to go to for dinner. That’s what makes a photo special to me: the captured mood of the moment that makes me relive the memory again. Until I shoot my new favourite photo, that is! 8

Analoge fotografie voor dummies door Cristian Kiesling Op deze foto maakt Hanke mooi gebruik van de aanwezige lichtbron door ertegenin te fotograferen. Tegenlicht is zeker niet 'fout' en biedt juist creatieve mogelijkheden. Zo gebruikt Hanke het tegenlicht bijvoorbeeld om silhoutten en een lensflare te laten zien. Tegen je lichtbron in fotograferen hoeft niet altijd lelijke, overbelichte vlekken op te leveren. In tegendeel: als je met een klein diafragma (een ‘groot getal’, bijvoorbeeld f16) fotografeert en je camera zo instelt dat hij +2 stops (in fotografietermen +2 EV) overbelicht, behoud je meer details in je foto. Dit kan prachtfoto’s opleveren die helemaal in de sfeer van de analoge fotografie passen. Naast het technische aspect kun je ook met je eigen inzicht die sfeer vangen, door bijvoorbeeld niet alleen recht tegen het licht in te fotograferen, maar ook het tegenlicht van bovenaf te gebruiken. Lensflare Een lensflare treedt op wanneer felle zonnestralen direct op je lens schijnen. Door de opbouw van je lens in verschillende glaslagen, kunnen deze zonnestralen bij een overgang tussen deze glasdelen zichtbaar worden. Zo'n lensflare, dat dus eigenlijk een zonnestraal is, kan voorkomen in de vorm van een lichte streep of gekleurde strepen of bollen. Vaak is een lensflare dus ongewenst, maar op veel foto's zal het zorgen voor een extra dimensie. Silhouetten Een ander effect wat je kunt bereiken door tegen je lichtbron in te fotografen is het tonen van de silhoutten van je onderwerp. Als de achtergrond lichter is dan je onderwerp, zal je onderwerp zijn details verliezen waardoor het enkel een donker gebied wordt. Wat overblijft is het silhout van je onderwerp, dat een artistiek tintje aan je foto zal geven. Randgloed Waar veel fotografen een zogenoemd 'haarlicht' voor gebruiken, een mooie randgloed op hun onderwerp, is dit ook makkelijk vast te leggen door het aanwezige tegenlicht te gebruiken. Een randgloed is een lichte gloed over de rand van je onderwerp, waardoor je details kunt accentureren of je onderwerp los kunt laten komen van de achtergrond. Je lichtbron moet daarvoor hoog staan en er niet direct achter, want dan blijft alleen een silhouet over (zoals beschreven in alinea 4)! Dit zijn slechts drie voorbeelden van de vele mogelijkheden die tegenlicht biedt. Probeer het eens uit!
Lomography for dummies by Cristian Kiesling This photograph shows how Hanke made good use of the backlight present by photographing straight into it. Backlight certainly is not a ‘bad’ thing as it offers many creative possibilities. Hanke’s photograph for example shows a lens flare and the person’s silhouette. Using backlight in your photograph does not always give ugly, overexposed areas in your image. Instead, if you use a small aperture (a ‘high number’, f16 for example) and set your camera to overexposure +2 EV (which will make sure the details will be remained), it could give you beautiful photographs. Photographs which neatly fit into the analogue photography feeling. By using your own insight, you can use backlight in many creative ways. Try for once to capture the light that shines from above instead of just photographing straight into it. Lens flare A lens flare will be visible in your picture when bright sunrays shine directly into your lens. Because of the layered structure of the lens, lens flares will become visible in forms of coloured or non-coloured lines or circles. For photographers a lens flare is often an unwanted effect, but sometimes it might just give that extra dimension to a photograph. Silhouettes Another effect backlight can give you is showing just your subject’s silhouettes. To do so, you’ll need a background that is brighter than your subject, which will cause a loss of details in your subject. Silhouettes often give an artsy touch to photographs. Halo effect Many photographers use a so-called ‘hair light’, a special light that creates a halo around their subject. This effect is also easy achieved by just using the present backlight. To give your subject this halo effect (or glow around the edges) the light source needs to be high up in the air. Glowing edges will accentuate details or set your subject apart from the background. These are just three examples of what photographing with backlight has to offer. Definitely worth trying don’t you think?

• Kies een letter uit die je wilt maken, leg de stof dubbel met

Vinden, toepassen en delen van je eigen stijl Voor een circusstijl heb je niet veel nodig. Zet een stel volwassenen met een lichte verzamelwoede en een vrij uitgesproken smaak voor kleuren en vormen in een (nèt iets te) klein huis, voeg een paar vrolijke kinderen toe en het is al gauw een circus. Kringloopdeskundige Daphne geeft je tips over het vinden van je eigen (tweedehands) stijl, al dan niet met een vleugje circus, hoe het toe te passen én te fotograferen voor bijvoorbeeld Instagram. Vrijwel alles in ons huis is tweedehands. Van meubels tot kleding tot zelfs de vloeren. Niet zozeer vanwege het groene principe, maar meer omdat je met tweedehands vaak tot verrassender oplossingen komt dan wanneer je alles nieuw uit een showroom bestelt. De bonus is dat het een stuk goedkoper is. Natuurlijk waardeer ik nieuwe producten, zeker als ze goed ontworpen zijn. Maar op de een of andere manier is een hal gevuld met trendy massaproductie voor mij als ontwerper funest voor mijn creativiteit. Ik vind mijn spullen op rommelmarkten, bij de kringloop of op internet, met name op Marktplaats. In de eerste plaats selecteer ik op de kleur van het materiaal, dat is meestal hetgene waar m'n oog op valt. In de tweede plaats kijk ik naar de algemene vorm, het silhouet van een voorwerp. Is die mooi? Of kan ik die aanpassen (bijvoorbeeld verven) als de kleur niet goed is? Of is het materiaal (in geval van kleding bijvoorbeeld) bruikbaar als de vorm niet goed is? Heb ik er een klik mee? Eén ding is zeker: als ik de neiging heb tot "Oehh!" roepen, weet ik zeker dat het tussen mij en een vondst goed zit. In de praktijk kom ik zo meestal uit bij producten uit de jaren ’60 en ’70, met hun uitgesproken kleurencombinaties en vormentaal. Maar ook patronen uit de jaren ’80 kan ik inspirerend vinden, vaak vooral als ze een beetje richting Fout gaan. Ik houd er van als een voorwerp een beetje prikkelend is.
bakje en is het tafeltje een snijplank op wat voorheen een drager voor een plantenbak was. Hou voor jezelf bij het inrichten een aantal regels in acht. Mijn regel is bijvoorbeeld dat de basis van ons huis licht moet zijn, mede omdat het een klein huis is maar vooral omdat een lichte basis met alles combineert. Het wordt al snel een erg druk geheel als je grote zware vlakken kleur en veel kleine objecten combineert. Als ik het gevoel heb dat het een setting saai dreigt te worden, dan gebruik ik grafische zwart/wit patronen om het resultaat frisser te maken. Grafische zwart/wit patronen geven een beeld een scherper contrast én het voorkomt dat je huis eruit komt te zien als een tijdcapsule uit een bepaald decennium. Weet ook wat er bij jou thuis werkt en wat niet. Sommige dingen die in de mode zijn passen gewoon niet bij een bepaald soort interieur. Voor mij persoonlijk zijn dat bijvoorbeeld de romantisch brocante maar ook de fluor trend. De laatste pas ik maar in hele kleine mate toe omdat ik het snel te heftig vindt worden. Voor een felle kleur grijp ik momenteel liever naar geel. Tot slot: maak een foto als je niet zeker weet of iets werkt in je interieur. Ik heb veel geleerd door het plaatsen van foto’s op Instagram. Op een foto zie je vaak direct of iets werkt of niet. Moet er voor je gevoel zeker een filter overheen voordat een foto wat lijkt, dan weet je eigenlijk al genoeg.... Kijk je al te lang naar een foto, spiegel hem dan eens. Je kijkt er dan (letterlijk en figuurlijk) weer fris tegenaan en toont je vaak direct of, en wat er mis mee is. De belangrijkste regel is echter: wees vooral niet bang om een afwijkende smaak te hebben! Trends veranderen om de haverklap dus je daaraan vasthouden is eigenlijk nutteloos. Er is niets zo inspirerend als een beetje eigenheid! Benieuwd naar Daphne’s foto’s? Je vindt haar op Instagram via daphne1979.
In principe is alles aan te passen dus mijn advies is om vooral niet bang te zijn om te experimenteren! Verknip die jurk, verf die lamp, verzaag dat meubel! Zo kom je tot de leukste originele oplossingen en mocht het resultaat niet uitpakken zoals je wil dan kom je in het proces vaak toch tot nieuwe ideeën. Lukte het innemen van de jurk niet? Dan wordt het een kinderjurk. Of een tas of kussen. Zelfs lelijke dingen hebben zo potentie. De vriendelijke prijs van tweedehands artikelen maakt dat je er niet snel een buil aan valt als het écht niet lukt. Inmiddels ben ik wel zo ver dat ik zonder vrees ook gloednieuwe producten aanpas aan eigen smaak. Op de foto’s staan een aantal dingen die ik op een nieuwe manier heb toegepast. De driehoeken op de muur zijn bevoordeeld stukken stof die met lijm van maïzena vastgeplakt zijn, als je ze nat maakt haal je ze er zo weer van af. De stof van het kinderrokje is eigenlijk bedoeld voor clownscostuums, de ophangringen zijn van een goedkoop plastic ringwerpspel, de grote plaat met optocht is van een oude poppenkast afgehaald. De ananas-plantenhanger is een oud glazen lampenkapje dat geel gespoten is. Zo had ik hem in gedachten maar toen hij eenmaal gespoten was en ik hem even ondersteboven wegzette in een potje was het opeens net een cactus, zoals je op de andere foto ziet. Op die foto ligt een wollen deken als kleed op de grond, is een pennenbakje opeens een space age planten-

Find, fit in and share you own style For a circus theme you don't need much, just place two adults with a rather outspoken taste in shape and colour and a tendency to hoard in a (slightly too) small house, add a couple of cheerful kids and there you have your circus. Queen of thrifting Daphne shares her tips and tricks for finding your own style, how to fit it into your interior and how to share it with others via - for example- Instagram. Most things in our house are second hand. From furniture to clothes to even the flooring. Not particularly to be eco-friendly but mostly because you just come to more surprising solutions than what you get from buying everything new straight from a showroom. As a bonus, second hand shopping is a lot cheaper. Don't get me wrong, I do appreciate well-designed new products but somehow there is nothing more smothering to my creativity than halls filled with trendy mass-produced products. I find my stuff mostly at flea markets, thriftshops or on the internet, mainly on Marktplaats (Dutch Ebay). At first sight, the colour of the material should catch my eye. Second, the general shape or silhouette should grab me. Furthermore I ask myself if I can paint it if the colour isn't right. Or if can I use the material (in case of clothing for instance) if its shape doesn’t appeal to me. One thing is definitely for sure: I know when an item and I are meant to be when I feel like going "Ooohh!" when I see it. When put into practice this usually means I end up with products from the sixties and seventies with their outspoken shapes and colours. Patterns from the eighties can also be inspiring to me, especially when they are slightly tacky. I like it when things are a bit provocative. Just about everything can be adjusted to your taste, so don't be afraid to experiment with them. Cut up that dress, paint that light, or chop up that piece of furniture! This might bring you the most fun and original solutions and in case things don't go your way, the re-designing process can bring you new ideas as well. Did taking in that dress didn't work out? Make it a kids dress, a tote bag, or pillow case. Even ugly things have potential coolness in them. And, since the costs of second hand materials are low, you don't lose much in case things eventually do fall apart. Nowadays I even alter new products to my liking without any fear.
In these pictures you see a couple of items in their new application. The pattern on the wall for instance is made with pieces of fabric. I stuck the pieces to the wall with home-made glue made of cornstarch, a material that’s easily removed again when dampened. The fabric for the little skirt is actually meant for clown costumes. The rings come from a cheap plastic ring toss game and the big print used to be the front of an old puppet theatre. The pineapple plant hanger is an old glass lamp shade I spray painted yellow. This is how I initially pictured it but when I put it away in a pot to dry it looked like a cactus, as you can see on the other image. The woolen blanket in that photo is used as a rug, a desk organizer a space age plant pot and the table is made of a cutting board that I put on top of a former pot holder. Making a set of rules and applying them during decorating can also help you following your own style. For instance, since our home is quite small and its content pretty colourful, I wanted its base to be light. Big slabs of bold colours and lots of small items can make a space feel overcrowded. When I feel an interior setting is turning out to be a bit dull I use graphic (black and white) patterns to spice it up. The sharp contrasts will give it the freshness it probably needs and on top of that, graphic patterns can help preventing your interior to look like more than a time capsule from a certain era. You should also be aware what things work and don’t work in your interior. Trendy things can simply not match a certain interior. The romantic country style or neon trend for example do not particularly work for my interior. When I feel something needs a bright colour, I currently rather turn to yellow. Another trick that might come in handy: if you aren't sure if a certain setting works for your interior take a picture of it! It’s what I definitely learned through making pictures for Instagram. If you really need to use a filter to make a picture look any good you probably know enough…! In case you have been staring at a set for too long, try to mirror the picture for once. This will (literally) give you a fresh look into things and quite often immediately shows you if and what's wrong with the image you created. But in the end, the most important rule is not to be afraid to have a different taste than others. Trends change by the minute so sticking to them is pretty useless. There’s nothing as inspiring as a bit of authenticity!

Each season, the fashion world opens its theatre drapes to the public, inviting the newest jaw dropping, awe-inspiring thrills on stage. I watch the models in their sky-high heels and hold my breath; they are like dancers on trapeze, just one missed step away from falling. After the show, everybody gets up and claps. The applause echoes off the walls, as the audience in their striking outfits nod excitedly. They have documented the wonders of the performance on their phones and pads, and are ready to spread the word to the outside world. “Marvellous innovations!” “Gorgeous designs!” “Here is the voice of the new generation!”

Na de show staat iedereen klappend op. Het publiek, uitgedost in net zulke opvallende outfits is enthousiast. Het applaus echoot tegen de muren. Ze hebben de wonderen van de voorstelling op hun telefoons en tablets vastgelegd, klaar om de nieuwe boodschap de wereld in te sturen: “Wat een innovatie!” “Práchtige ontwerpen!” “Hier klinkt de stem van een nieuwe generatie!”
Het Fantastisch Modecircus
Zie ze gaan: met hun exotische strepen, gewaagde rokjes, pauwenveren en gouden shirts. Ieder seizoen opent de modewereld haar gordijnen voor het publiek en showen ze de nieuwste, kaakzakkende en inspirerende modegrillen van dat moment op hun podia. Ik kijk naar de modellen op hun hemeltergend hoge hakken en hou mijn adem in: ze zijn als trapeze dansers, slechts één misstap verwijderd van vallen.

Ik mag graag kijken naar het circus dat de modewereld is, erna ben ik altijd weer blij om naar huis te gaan, naar mijn eigen kast met haar rustgevende schakeringen blauw, zwart en bruin. Het is de plek waar mijn favoriete jeans en zachte vesten een vredelievend bestaan leiden naast oude leren tassen en gekke dierenprintjes. Mijn kast lijkt in de verste verte niet op een wervelende modeshow, maar het is mijn eigen kleine circus van herinneringen en stukken die allemaal hun eigen bijzonderheden hebben. Er is een sari uit India, kanten handschoentjes uit de jaren ’60 en een shirt dat ik droeg tijdens een eerste date. Mijn kast bestaat uit basics, vintage stukken en modeverschoppelingen die nooit Anna Wintour’s goedkeuring zouden kunnen wegdragen. Ik herinner me de grijs fluwelen broek die ik vijf jaar geleden van mijn oma kreeg: ze hield niet van die broek en ‘m mij cadeau doen was slechts een manier voor haar om van het ding af te raken. Ondanks dat de broek het tegenovergestelde van sexy was, zag ik er wel wat in. Ik zag mezelf er al in lopen met een getailleerd jasje en hakken eronder: helemaal modisch en hartstikke cool. Tuurlijk zag die broek eruit als een pyama, maar wat kon mij dat schelen, zelfs het hoongelach van mijn bloedeigen zus kon me niet van het dragen ervan weerhouden. Ik voelde me als die op straat geportretteerde mensen op een modeblog, compleet ongevoelig voor het feit dat de billen van de broek ergens halverwege mijn knieën hing, volledig uitgelubberd. Het was niet de elegantste look van mijn leven, ook kwam het niet in de buurt van de fashionstatements op de catwalk, maar hallo! ik werd toen, op dat moment, extreem blij van die slechtzittende broek! Ik ben de spreekstalmeester van mijn eigen circus. Niet een circus dat trends representeert, maar wel één die alle mooie herinneringen aan ontmoetingen met lieve vrienden herbergt. In dit circus kan ik doen wat ík wil, groen dragen als rood de mode is, of een minirok aantrekken als de zoom van de rok van de fashionista’s op deze aarde over de grond sleept. In het circus van de mode gaan en komen trends immers met de snelheid van het licht. Extreem hoge splitten en schoudervullingen hebben hun biezen nog niet gepakt of hun wagons mogen alweer terugkeren naar circus. Misschien dat zelfs lubberende pyamabroeken nog eens een hit worden. Ach, of dat nu gebeurt of niet, ik kan ermee leven. Ik zal altijd plezier houden met mijn oma’s broek en mijn eigen, persoonlijke modecircus. I enjoy being the spectator of the circus called fashion, but afterwards I am glad to go home - glad to go home and open my closet full of calming hues of blues, blacks and browns. That’s the place where my favourite jeans and cuddly cardigans lead their peaceful lives next to old leather bags and silly animal prints. My closet is far away from the fantastic fashion shows, but it is my own little circus made of memories and items that all have their own little quirks. There’s a saree from India, lace gloves from the ´60s, and a shirt that I wore on my first date. My wardrobe is made of basics, vintage items and fashion’s outcast that I doubt would be approved on the glossy pages of Anna Wintour’s. I remember when an odd five years ago, I inherited a pair of grey velour pants from my grandma. She didn’t like the pants, so handing them down to me was just her way to get rid of them. Although the pants were probably the official antonym for “sexy” in the dictionary, I saw potential in them. I pictured myself wearing them with smart blazers and heels, looking effortlessly cool. My sister laughed at me prancing around in what looked like a pyjama (which it in fact was), but I didn’t care. I felt just like the people portrayed on street style blogs, completely ignorant of the fact that the bottom of the pants was sagging and the knees were completely stretched out. It surely wasn’t the most elegant look of my life nor like the casual fashion statements seen on the runways, but damn, was I happy to wear those ill-fitting pants at the time! I am the director of my own circus, a circus that instead of showing in trend catalogues and high-fashion shows tours around cafés meeting my friends, sitting, knitting and chatting. With my own circus, I can do whatever I like, wear green when the colour of the season is red or put on a mini-skirt whilst others drag their hems on the ground. In the circus of the fashion world, trends come and go. Thigh-high slits and shoulder pads will pack their bags and leave the show, but sooner or later their caravans will return. Who knows, maybe one day sloppy pyjama pants will also become the hottest item of the season. Nonetheless, if that won’t happen, that’s ok, too – I will still have fun with my granny’s pants and my own circus of clothes. OMA’S BUREAUTJE & ARNE’S EGG CHAIR De huizen die ze zagen waren óf te duur, óf enorme klusprojecten, óf mini starterswoninkjes waar eigenlijk geen plek was voor de kinderen die ze graag wilden. De zoektocht naar hun huis duurde dus even, tot ze dit 100-jarige huis vonden, in een schattig straatje middenin Delft, mét tuin en nog betaalbaar ook. Oorspronkelijk was het een kleine arbeidswoning, niet veel meer dan één ruimte van 20 m2 met daarop een puntdakje. Gelukkig werd er door voorgaande bewoners zoveel op en aan gebouwd dat Marije, haar man Dolf en hun kinderen Daan (2) en Bente (1) nu ruim 105 m2 tot hun beschikking hebben en is er zelfs nog iets van de oude balken en bijbehorende sfeer overgebleven.

‘KLEURRIJK’ ...is het eerste wat opvalt als je Marije’s huis binnenstapt en dat is ook hoe ze haar eigen stijl omschrijft. “Dat ik ooit alleen maar zwart met af en toe een rood accent droeg, kan ik me bijna niet meer voorstellen. Kleding, meubels, alles moet kleur hebben en dan heb ik het niet over pastels of aardetinten ofzo. Om in huis een ruim gevoel te houden hielden we de basis wit, maar dan ook echt wít. Ik heb daarvoor eindeloos veel staaltjes bekeken. Uiteindelijk bleek de kleur wit die ik zocht ‘gelukzalig’ (van Histor – red.) te heten. Hoe cheezy dat ook klinken mag, ik was meteen overtuigd!” Chaotisch en druk, zo typeert Marije niet alleen haar persoonlijkheid, maar ook haar huis. Er was geen moodboard of eindbeeld voor deze inrichting en als ze ergens voor valt, dan wordt er plek voor gemaakt. Het resultaat is een vrolijke boel met hier en daar wat losse eindjes. “Ik heb al m’n hele leven gebrek aan focus, ben ook meer een starter dan een afmaker. Ik switchte bijvoorbeeld een paar keer van studie en zou nu het liefs weer een ander carrièrepad kiezen. Het is misschien veelzeggend dat kindjes zich snel thuisvoelen in ons huis, het heeft iets kinderlijks met al die kleuren en gekkigheidjes zoals dat rare hoekje op de bank en vintage speelgoed als decoratieve items waar ook mee gespeeld mag worden. Bang voor vlekken op de witte vloer of egaalrode bank zijn we niet. Die zitten er toch al. Er moet plezier gemaakt kunnen worden.”

Voor de volwassen bezoeker is het óók een feest om de alle hoekjes met kleurrijke verzamelingen, erfstukken en vintage meubelen in Marije’s huis te bewonderen. Een prachtig jaren ’50 bureautje en de turquoise blauwe Jacobsen Egg chair zijn haar interieurschatten. Het bureautje erfde ze van haar oma, op
wie ze dol was. “Als kind was ik al gefascineerd door het bureautje door het uitschuifbare blad en de kleine laatjes en vakjes waar oma enveloppen en postzegels in bewaarde. Het wordt bij ons ook weer echt gebruikt en dat had ze geweldig gevonden, ze maakte zich soms zorgen over wat er met haar zorgvuldig bij elkaar gespaarde spulletjes zou gebeuren als ze er niet meer was. Iedereen noemt het ook ‘oma’s bureautje’, dat vind ik zo leuk! Ik wou dat ze ons zo kon zien, hoe we hier zitten met die twee kleintjes. Ze zou heel trots geweest zijn. Om al die redenen heeft het een soort ereplekje gekregen. Zo blijft ze onderdeel van ons leven. De Egg chair kreeg ik van Dolf na de geboorte van Daan. Ik heb de kinderen er uren in zitten voeden, terwijl ik lekker naar buiten zat te kijken. Ik vind hem prachtig en heb er nu al zoveel mooie herinneringen aan dat ik niet denk dat we hem ooit nog wegdoen.”
Op www.wijeisenijs.blogspot.com blogt Marije over haar creatieve projecten, het maken van stempels en (vintage) prentenboeken. Een jaar of vijf geleden kreeg ze zin om naast haar schildercursussen wat creatiefs te doen, maar wel iets wat ze aan de keukentafel kon doen. Marije: “Op internet zag ik dat je met een guts en rubber gemakkelijk en snel stempels kon maken. Ik wilde graag met andere stempelmakers van gedachten wisselen over gutsjes en rubber en het was handig om daar een plek voor op internet te hebben. Waar mijn fascinatie voor kinderboeken vandaan komt, weet ik eigenlijk niet. Als kind las ik niet eens graag prentenboeken, ik had liever meer tekst. Toch ben ik altijd dol gebleven op kinderboeken, ik lees zelden een volwassen mensenboek. Ik hou van tienerdrama, kijk ook graag highschool series. Op vakantie gaat dus ook alleen Young Adult Literature mee. Maar ik hou van illustraties en van kleurrijk en dan kom je al snel bij prentenboeken uit. Ik word er gewoon heel vrolijk van. En heel hyper, als ik iets moois heb gezien ratel ik daar meestal wel een tijdje over door tegen iedereen die het wel (en niet) horen wil, haha!� Marije is ook op Instagram te vinden, je vind haar via wijeisenijs.

GRANDMA’S DESK & ARNE’S EGG CHAIR The search for their home took them a while. The homes they viewed were merely too expensive, enormous rebuilding projects or too small to live in with the kids they were planning to have. Eventually they stumbled upon this very affordable, 100-year old building with garden in the center of Delft and fell in love. Working-class houses like these measured usually about 215 square feet, but former owners had already added two extra floors to the house preserving the house’ old beams and atmosphere by doing that. With its 1,614 square feet it is now the perfect living space for Marije, her husband Dolf and two kids Daan (2) and Bente (1). “Colourful” is the first thing that comes in mind when you enter Marije’s home. It is also how she describes her style: “Hard to imagine that I once whore only black with some red details here and there. Clothes, furniture, things in general...I like them to be brightly coloured. To keep an airy feel in the house, we decided to keep its base white, but to find the perfect shade of white I had to examine dozens of colour samples. Eventually, the colour that seemed perfect was called “bliss” (by Histor). As cheezy as it might sound, I was immediately convinced this was the shade of white for our home!”

Then she read about stamp making on the internet. Marije: “I wanted to share my stamp making experiences with other creative people, that’s initially why I started my blog. What triggered my love for children’s books I don’t really know, really. As a child I even preferred text over drawings in a book. Still, I love children’s stories and ‘till this this day I prefer to read young adult literature over adult literature instead. My love for colour and beautiful illustrations could explain my love for children’s picture books though. A beautiful book makes my heart sing and when I stumble upon something new and beautiful, I keep rattling on about it, to anyone who wants or doesn’t want to hear, haha!” You can find Marije also on Instagram via wijeisenijs.
Chaotic and lively is how Marije describes her character and her home. No moodboard was made before she started to decorate her interior nor did she have a defined goal of what the interior had to look like when she and her family moved in. If they find something of their liking, they simply integrate it in their interior. This manner of decorating results in a happy, welcoming home with here and there some unfinished details. Marije adds: “All my life I have had a lack of focus, I am more of a starter than a finaliser of things. I switched studies a couple of times for example and I at this moment I really like to switch career paths again. It might say a great deal that children immediately seem to feel at home here, because of that loose atmosphere and because almost all the decorative items here are suitable to play with as well. Having fun is more important than going bezerk over some stain on your couch or white floor!” Not only children but adults too will find a great deal of pleasure in visiting Marije’s home though. The nooks with colourful collections, inherited keepsakes and second hand pieces of furniture are a true feast to the eyes. A cute 50s desk and turquoise blue Jacobsen Egg chair are Marije’s true interior treasures. She inherited the desk from her beloved grandmother: “When I was little, I was fascinated by its little drawers and compartments where my grandmother kept envelopes and postage stamps. She would have loved to see it stand here, and that it’s still being used. When she was old she could worry a bit about what would happen to her beloved stuff when she had passed away. I wish she could see us now, living here with our two children, she would have been so proud. For all those reasons we gave grandma’s desk a special place in the living room, we keep her memory close this way. The Egg chair was a gift from Dolf after our son was born. I have spent hours sitting in

Kun je iets over jezelf vertellen? Als fotograaf experimenteer ik graag met zelfgemaakte lenzen en laat ik me inspireren door imperfectie en vergane glorie. Ik fotografeer wat mijn ogen zien, wat ik vast wil leggen in de tijd, wat ik wil onthouden. Nadat ik verschillende lange periodes in Zuid-Amerika heb doorgebracht en daarna een aantal jaren in Parijs te heb gewoond en gewerkt, ben ik sinds kort weer terug in Nederland. Ik woon nu in Amsterdam en geniet ervan om hier weer lekker rond te fietsen en Belgische biertjes te drinken! Wat is het project The Curious Busker Tale, hoe en waarom is het (idee voor het) initiatief ontstaan en met wie werk je samen? The Curious Busker Tale (www.thecuriousbuskertale.blogspot.com) is een artistiek project dat ik samen met Jennifer Morrison, een Schotse schrijfster en journaliste, heb opgezet. Onze paden kruisten elkaar een paar jaar geleden. We woonden op dat moment allebei in Parijs (zij woont daar nog steeds) en waren beiden gefascineerd door de Parijse 'busker scene'. Door middel van beeld (mijn foto's) en tekst (Jennifer's woorden) zijn we begonnen met het vastleggen van de verhalen van deze straatmuzikanten.
Door hun levensverhalen, motivaties en ervaringen te vertellen, kunnen we beetje bij beetje de Parijse 'busker scene' verder uitpluizen. Daarnaast is ons project een verzameling van mooie muziek die je in de Parijse straten kunt vinden. Door deze muziek met een groter publiek te delen zetten we tegelijkertijd talentvolle artiesten in de spotlights . Waarom straatmuzikanten, waar komt je fascinatie voor hen vandaan en heeft dat ook iets te maken met Parijs, waar je tot voor kort woonde? Jennifer en ik zijn om min of meer dezelfde redenen in Parijs beland. Het is een beetje een cliché, maar Parijs heeft altijd dromers en romantici aangetrokken en ik vrees dat wij ook tot die categorie behoren! Het is nu eenmaal een geweldig mooie stad en daarnaast heb je de inspirerende verhalen van de vele beroemde artiesten die in Parijs hebben gewoond, het bohémienbestaan aan het eind van de negentiende eeuw... Straatartiesten leven op een bepaalde manier nog steeds dat bohémiene leven. Ze zijn gepassioneerd over wat ze doen en leiden een onvoorspelbaar bestaan; vaak leven ze in het moment en écht voor hun muziek. Het zijn echter geen personen uit verhalen van vergane tijden maar echte mensen van vlees en bloed. Dat fascineerde ons: we willen graag meer te weten komen over deze hedendaagse bohémiens en zijn benieuwd naar hun verhalen.
Hoe selecteer (of vind) je de kunstenaars? Onze eerste muzikant, Audren, hebben we via via ontmoet. Jennifer en ik waren meteen enthousiast over zijn muziek en Audren was op zijn beurt enthousiast over ons project. Aan het eind van ons gesprek tipte hij ons een andere straatmuzikant en zo is het balletje gaan rollen. Een aantal 'buskers' zijn we persoonlijk tegen het lijf gelopen, op straat of in de metro, en daarnaast worden we ook zelf benaderd door artiesten die over ons project hebben gehoord en daar graag deel van uit willen maken. We hebben geen specifieke selectiecriteria maar één van onze ongeschreven regels is dat we de muziek allebei moeten waarderen en op de één of andere manier geïntrigeerd moeten zijn door de persoon, dan is onze nieuwsgierigheid gewekt.

Is er een grote gemene deler tussen de kunstenaars, iets dat hen bindt? Alle artiesten die we tot dusver ontmoet hebben zijn stuk voor stuk gepassioneerd over muziek. Sommigen spelen voornamelijk op straat om geld te verdienen, anderen voor het contact met de mensen, voor het promoten van hun muziek of simpelweg voor het plezier. De liefde voor muziek is echter wat bij allemaal centraal staat en wat hen bindt! Op welke manier tracht je het karakter van de muzikanten/de sfeer van hun muziek of levensstijl te vangen in je foto's? Ik luister naar hun verhaal en naar hun muziek. Ik observeer ze en probeer interessante, persoonlijke details te ontdekken. Dat is vaak niet zo moeilijk; doorgaans ademen de muzikanten zodanig hun eigen stijl uit dat het vooral een kwestie is van je daarvoor openstellen en van oprecht geïnteresseerd zijn. Daarnaast is het altijd interessant om te zien welke ontmoetingsplaats de muzikanten voorstellen. We vragen hen altijd om een favoriete plek uit te kiezen - dat kan de plek zijn waar ze graag spelen, hun stamkroeg, een buurt waar ze een speciale band mee hebben... Op die manier kom je meteen in hun wereldje terecht en dat is leuk! Het voegt automatisch iets toe aan het beeld dat je van iemand hebt en dat zie je ook terug in mijn foto's.

Overigens ontstaan de fotoshoots bijna altijd spontaan. Ik fotografeer vaak terwijl de muzikanten aan het spelen of met Jennifer aan het kletsen zijn. Op die manier is het niet zo geposeerd - ik hou van eerlijke portretten. Heb je nog andere leuke nieuwe plannen op stapel staan? We hopen dit najaar een kleine show in Parijs te organiseren (een tentoonstelling & live music event). How and where do you meet the artists?
With pleasure! I'm a photographer. I like experimenting with homemade lenses and I've got a thing for 'the unpolished'. Industrial landscapes, disused factories, old abandoned buildings; I find a peculiar kind of beauty in these environments and that inspires me. I shoot what my eyes see, what I want to fix in time, what I want to remember. After travelling extensively through South America and then living in Paris for several years, I recently returned to live in my home country, the Netherlands. Currently I reside in Amsterdam which I love, I'm particularly enjoying exploring the best places in the city to drink some nice Belgian beers - new tips are welcome!
We met our first busker, Audren, after a tip-off from a friend of ours. We both immediately liked his music and luckily Audren was happy to meet with us. At the end of the interview he put us in touch with another busker and that's how the ball started rolling. Some buskers have got in touch with us themselves as they've heard about our project and liked what we're doing, other buskers we've spotted in the street or on the metro. We don't have any set criteria however one of our unwritten rules is that we both have to like their music and be somehow intrigued by the persons themselves, we have to, for some reason, want to know their story. Is there a common denominator between the artists?
And a bit about the initiative? The Curious Busker Tale (www.thecuriousbuskertale.blogspot.com) is an art project I created together with Jennifer Morrison, a Scottish writer, whose path I crossed a couple of years ago. At the time we were both living in Paris (she still is), and were fascinated by the 'Parisian busker scene'. Through Jennifer's words and through my photographs we started to tell the stories of these buskers. However, in fact our project is really a sort of ongoing narrative, it's made up of many stories within one. We discover the story of the 'Parisian busker scene' by exploring the lives, motivations and experiences of Paris buskers. At the same time we're creating an online collection of Paris' street music and by sharing this with a wider audience we hope to help promote some great new artists! We named our project 'The Curious Busker Tale' as it was born out of curiosity and the more buskers we've met, the more curious we've become! That's why we decided to continue our project even though I'm not living in Paris anymore. What’s your fascination with buskers? And has it something to do with Paris where you lived for a while? Jennifer and I actually both ended up living in Paris for quite similar reasons, Paris has always been a magnet for people interested in the arts. It can seem like a cliché this attraction but Paris has attracted dreamers and romantics for centuries and still does today. It really is such a beautiful city, and then you have the stories of all the famous artists who've lived there which is really inspiring - in particular there's the history of the bohemians at the turn of the 19th century. Street musicians are, in a way, living the ultimate bohemian life. They're passionate about their art and their lives are unpredictable, often they're very much living in the moment, for their art, and I think we both found that really interesting. However, they're not characters in a dream, these are real people and we both found that fascinating, we wanted to find out who these modern day bohemians really were, to discover and share their stories.
All the buskers we have interviewed so far are genuinely passionate about music. Some of them were busking for money but that's not been their sole motivation, they do it for fun too, for the people contact, and for the chance to share their music with a wider audience. For lots of different reasons actually. However one thing they do all share is a common love for music. In what way do the pictures reflect the character of the musician and his or her music? I listen to their story, I hear them playing, I observe them, I look for interesting details. Most of the times the buskers 'breathe' their own style so it's more just a question of opening your eyes to that. Then there's also the place they choose! We prefer to let our buskers choose where we meet. That can be the place where they're used to playing, their local bar, their favorite neighborhood - anywhere. It's always interesting to see what location someone comes up with. Often it has a particular atmosphere that sort of automatically becomes part of the photograph - in a way it also tells us a bit more about the person. While I take photographs, our buskers are playing their music or chatting with Jennifer. It's more natural that way, less posed. I like the photo shoot to be spontaneous! Jennifer often talks about the metro line 2 in Paris, it's her favorite line and she has a lot of stories about it. I think her passion for this line often surprises our buskers somewhat, that's often why they're laughing in my photos! Are there any other projects you’re planning to execute in the near future? We hope to organize a little show in Paris this fall (an exhibition and live music event). What is a busker? A busker is a person who sings or plays music (for money) in streets and other public areas. Nowadays we call them buskers but up until the 20th century buskers were known as 'minstrels' in Englishspeaking countries. In medieval France they were commonly called 'jongleurs' and 'troubadours'. It was in 1665 that the verb 'to busk' first appeared in the English language. However, at this time, it was used as a nautical term meaning 'to cruise around, tackling with the wind'. The word probably originates from the Spanish verb 'buscar', which means 'to seek'. By 1734 this is the definition that was more widely used for the verb 'to busk' in the English language too. Today, buskers around the world are still seeking something: an audience, fame fortune. The meaning of the verb 'to busk' may have evolved over the centuries but in a way the old nautical definition, 'cruising around, tackling with the wind' , still aptly describes the bohemian, vagabond lifestyle of the modern day busker.
