JONES STUDIO HALE HALL EXPANSION KNOWLTON SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE
H
ale Hall, originally the Ohio Union, opened on January 11, 1911. The building housing the original Ohio Union is one of two examples of Jacobethan revival architecture at OSU, while only half a dozen exist in Columbus. Towards the end of WWI in 1917 the Ohio Union made its first addition of a temporary kitchen to accommodate students enrolled in the School of Military Aeronautics. The temporary kitchen was demolished in 1921. A new
1921 addition to the original dining room added a second story replacing the South Oval terrace. In 1931 a series of small additions were added to the west end of the Ohio Union completed in 1940. The Student Services Building was remodeled in 1952 by, university architect Howard Dwight Smith to house financial aid counseling, health services, women’s programs and international student support. Between 1952 and 1969 the Student Services Building had fallen into disrepair due to high maintenance costs. The University planned to raze it, when in November 1978 the
original men’s Student Union was nominated to be added to the National Register of Historic Places by former student George Siekinnen and architecture student George M. Kane (April 20, 1979) On May, 1, 1986 the Student Services Building was renamed as Enarson Hall in honor of university’s ninth president. Enarson Hall’s last major renovation took place in 1987 with a two-story addition, new interior finishes, and new windows. Enarson Hall was renamed as Hale Hall in 2013 when the Black Cultural Center moved across 12th Ave.

THE
OHIO UNION
I
n the early 1950s the civil rights movement in the United States gained momentum and lead to timely and important legislative and social reforms. Concurrently, minority students at Ohio State sought equal opportunities and cultural recognition on campus. The University responded by creating the Office of Minority Affairs in 1970, (which in 2012 became the Office of Diversity and Inclusion). However, African American students wanted a place to meet as a community, celebrate their history, and form an identity on Ohio State’s predominantly white campus; a black cultural center located in Royer Commons was the solution. The student-run center was approved in 1972 but concerns were immediately raised over limited space and funds. Students reached out to leaders within their community to put together a formal proposal to the University for the first official black cultural center at Ohio State, resulting in a proposal submitted in 1973. Debate between OSU President Harold Enarson and the student committee deadlocked over administrative jurisdiction, location, and budget.. In 1982 Frank W. Hale Jr., former Oakwood College president and “academic activist,” partnered with Dr. William E. Nelson to revive interest in a new center. By 1985 a new center, to be located in Bradford Commons, was approved. Dedicated in 1989 as the Frank W. Hale Jr. Black Cultural Center, the 18,800 square foot facility has served its Buckeye community for 3 decades developing an identity and renowned art collection . In 2010 a new university plan slated Bradford
Commons for demolition and the Hale Center moved to Enarson Hall across 12th Ave, which was renamed Hale Hall in 2013. Plans are now underway to revitalize the historic structure and build a large addition onto Hale Hall to accommodate the expanding Frank W. Hale Jr. Black Cultural Center and the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, both of which currently occupy the building. The battle for a black cultural center at Ohio State has resulted in one of the top cultural centers in the nation and the legacy of an exceptional man.
