MASONS SUPPORTING MASONS MASONIC ROOTS: MISSION & VISION

A RETIREMENT LIFESTYLE FOR EVERYONE

Summer 2022

History of The Ohio Masonic Home

From the beginning, The Ohio Masonic Home (OMH) has been rooted in its Masonic Values of Care, Compassion, and Concern. 125 years ago, this commitment took the form of caring for children and widows. But, as the needs of the community shifted, OMH evolved to meet them and began to focus on how to support people as they age. For more than 25 years, OMH has been dedicated to providing retirement lifestyles that help people age respectfully to the entire community – not just Masons.

The Ohio Masonic Home Today

The Ohio Masonic Home offers three residential communities across Ohio providing premier lifestyle choices to Springfield, Waterville, Medina, and their surrounding communities. Springfield Masonic Community, Browning Masonic Community, and Western Reserve Masonic Community each offer beautiful accommodations and exceptional experiences that make residents, community members, and staff feel like family. The Ohio Masonic Home Resource Center (OMHRC) works with individuals and families in

Ohio to receive the resources they need in the best location for them – whether that be their home, an OMH campus, or elsewhere. This support empowers each person to age the way they choose by helping sustain their health, happiness, and independence.

Scan with your phone to learn more about OMH history.

The Ohio Masonic Home and The Ohio Masonic Home Resource Center exist to provide the support needed to help people age respectfully through the generosity of the community and The Ohio Masonic Home Foundation (OMHF). OMHF makes it possible for OMHRC to financially support those in need throughout the aging process while also supporting lifestyle activities and other needs at each OMH campus. Whether you wish to move to a retirement community or remain at home, OMH is here to provide aging support, answer your questions, and offer solutions for your retirement living needs so you can age how you choose.

Partnering with the Community

The Ohio Masonic Home is proud of its community connections and partnerships with local businesses to provide services and support to meet community needs. Community partnerships include: Providing financial, clinical, and social service support

When is the right time to move to an OMH community? Many people believe they should wait until they need to move to a retirement community. We encourage you to move to one of our communities whenever you’re ready for a worry-free and maintenancefree lifestyle. The earlier you move to one of the communities, the more you’ll be able to enjoy all of the engaging lifestyle opportunities they provide! Who can move to an OMH community? Anyone 55 or older, whether they are a Mason or not, is eligible to become an OMH resident.1 Whether you’re looking for worry-free living provided in a villa, need some minor help day-to-day through assisted living, or it’s time for more assistance through skilled nursing care, The Ohio Masonic Home has options to help you throughout every stage. If I’m going to move to an OMH community, I must sell or give away all my stuff (asset surrender) right? Absolutely not! This has not been the case in over 20 years, but it is a common myth that still circulates. We want you to bring the things that make your house a home with you to truly make OMH your new home and community. I don’t need skilled nursing care now, but what if I need additional care in the future? OMH is a Continuing Care Retirement Community – that means as your needs change, we’ll be there to support you every step of the way. Whether you start off in independent or assisted living, memory care and skilled care will be available when you need it.2 Are there entrance fees? OMH does not require entrance fees for anyone moving to one of the communities. However, with some living options, a 100% refundable deposit option is available and can reduce the monthly costs. Contact us today to learn more about which living option might be right for you and learn more about the financial options available with each. Are pets allowed? Absolutely! Each campus has their own policy about what pets are allowed and certain restrictions, but many of our residents have pets.

Do I bring my own furniture? Bringing your own furniture is a big part of what makes where you choose to live at OMH your home. Independent and assisted living options are unfurnished and waiting for you to make it yours. Skilled nursing care may provide some furniture for you, like a bed, but there are still lots of options for you to decorate and put finishing touches on your space. I’m a Mason. What benefits do I receive? As a Mason, Masonic spouse/widow, Eastern Star, or Prince Hall Affiliated, you may qualify for our Masonic Financial Assistance Program (MFAP). Financial assistance which applies to assisted living. For all other needs, our Resource Center can assess and help you find the assistance you need. More information may be found on page 12. If I move there and something happens to me, what would happen to my wife? If you and your spouse move to an OMH campus, you can rest assured that you or your spouse will be taken care of if something ever happens to either of you. Will I be required to sign a long-term lease? We are proud of our communities and stand by our commitment to be the best place to live. We know you’ll love it here once you move in, so we don’t require long-term lease agreements. If you move here and decide not to stay, you just need to give a 30-day notice.

Call us today to discuss your options and any additional questions! dependent on financial qualification. Contact us today to see if you’re qualified and discuss which lifestyle option is the best fit for you!

THE OHIO MASONIC HOME FOUNDATION Every person deserves to live the life they choose as they age. A life with respect and dignity. Whether someone needs extra support to continue to live on their own, they need assistance to move to one of The Ohio Masonic Home’s (OMH) campuses, or they are a current OMH campus resident in need of help navigating a new challenge, The Ohio Masonic Home Foundation (OMHF) is there to serve them. Through the generosity of donors, OMHF strengthens the lives of Ohio Masons, campus residents and Ohioans over the age of 55 with hope, dignity, and security. OMHF focuses on available and necessary resources and researches innovative care solutions, providing charitable support to individuals in need. The Ohio Masonic Home Foundation exists to support the work of OMH, each of its campuses, and The Ohio Masonic Home Resource Center (OMHRC). To do this work, OMHF enlists the generosity of individuals and organizations to ensure aging OMH residents and Ohio Masons live a safe, active, and healthy lifestyle while following their personal passions and dreams. This purpose is deeply rooted in the Masonic Value of charity and starts with the support and generosity of every Mason. To learn more about the efforts of The Ohio Masonic Home Foundation and how you can help make a difference, visit our website at ohiomasonichomefoundation.org or call us at 888-248-2664. How much of our donations go to helping Masons? As a donor, you are in complete control of how your money is used. If you feel led to specifically support Masons, their wives, or their widows, a gift to OMHF can be directed toward Masonic financial assistance or OMHRC so Brother Masons get the care, services, and assistance they need.

need. Others choose to support specific priorities such as OMH residents, OMHRC, memory care, or Masonic financial assistance among others.

What about my Lodge dues? A portion of your Lodge dues are earmarked for OMHF. Did you know that from your annual dues just $2.20 goes to support the work of OMH? Making an additional gift to OMHF ensures that your Brother Masons have the support they need to safely continue to live with respect and dignity.

Funding may be provided to support things like exercise equipment, resident activities, trips and outings, a dog park, or campus events such as Mother’s Day lunch or other holidays like the 4th of July fireworks.

Why does The Ohio Masonic Home Foundation exist? OMHF was established to support the work of OMH as they connect to and care for those who are aging – providing the things they need to live their best lives with dignity and respect. OMHF also supports OMH as they offer new opportunities for life-long learning and growth, safety, comfort, and care. What are some typical uses for our donations? There are many ways to help. Some donors direct their generosity toward OMH’s current greatest

10

Some choose to support OMHRC so aging Ohioans are connected with necessary resources and Ohio Masons can receive emergency financial assistance. Through the generosity of donors like you, OMHF also provides the financial support necessary for using the most innovative technologies to improve the care and lifestyle of our residents. Embodied Labs is an exciting new virtual reality (VR) technology being used to provide caregivers a better view of what an individual with Alzheimer’s or dementia might be experiencing and help them understand the best ways to engage with and care for those residents. During COVID-19 lockdowns donors made it possible for residents to

have tablets, allowing them to video call with their loved ones and stay connected to one another. Donations can also provide some financial support to Brother Masons over the age of 55, and their wives or widows, who live at an OMH campus and have outlived their savings. How do I make sure my gift is used how I want? You can donate to a variety of funds at OMHF. If there is a specific project or program that interests you and that you would like to support, we are happy to accommodate! Simply write your intentions on the memo line of your check or in the comment field of the online donation form and we will work with you to fulfill your wishes and deliver opportunity, safety, hope, and care to those we serve. Is my donation tax deductible? Yes, because The Ohio Masonic Home Foundation is a not-for-profit, 501(c)(3) organization, charitable gifts you make to us are tax deductible to the fullest extent allowed by law.

ls are Saying... “My dad was a Mason, so it was always in the back of mind to move here. I moved in July 2016. When I looked at my potential villa, it was under construction and there was sawdust everywhere. Even with that, I still knew this was the place for me. I recommend moving to SMC early on so that you can take advantage of all the great things that are offered. Since I made the move, I have gained a new family and a sense of belonging.” Brother Phil Hoffman, Mt. Hermon Lodge #304, Columbus, GA, Past Master, and Morningstar Lodge #795 “Why did I move to WRMC? It was a combination of several factors. First, I am a Mason. Second, our health was getting to the point where we couldn’t do all the things around our property that we loved to do. Therefore, we decided that we needed to make a change, and remembering all the good we’d heard about WRMC, we knew this was the right place for us.” Brother John Mountain, Theodore Beck Lodge #714

“I am a 6th generation Mason. I started coming to Home Day with my dad as a teenager. Our legacy resides in The Ohio Masonic Homes. There is so much Masonic knowledge everywhere you look. At the end of the day, this is our brotherhood.” Brother Cory Branscum, Temperance Lodge #73

“I am a Mason and attended various Masonic activities at WRMC and I was always impressed with the grounds and welcoming atmosphere. We were finding it more difficult to maintain our home, our health was beginning to show signs of aging, and thus a decision to plan our future became a priority. We came to WRMC because of the continuing care concept knowing this is a one-stop shop, we will live here, become involved in the community, and spend our remaining days as a community member. We have found WRMC a very welcoming community from the first day we arrived.” Brother Carl Heckert, Wellington Lodge #127 “This is a great place to live. I have good neighbors and the staff is great. This is a place to come to live, not to die. They will do anything for you. This is a good way of life with true Masonic values.” Brother Tony Perone, Bloomingburg Lodge #449 and Morningstar Lodge #795, Past Master of Bloomingburg and currently the Master of Morningstar Lodge

It’s such a happy place.” Brother Jim Elam, St. John Lodge #13 “It is an honor to be able to bring the core principals of Freemasonry to life each and everyday in how we care for our Brothers and their families. The campus is alive with activity and opportunity for our seniors to thrive and live an enriched life. It is extremely fulfilling to be part of something that brings joy and meaning to so many.” Brother Tony Berardi, President, Springfield Masonic Community, Huber Heights Lodge #777

A SPECIAL PUBLICATION FROM THE OHIO MASONIC HOME

WHAT’S SO SPECIAL ABOUT THIS SPECIAL PUBLICATION? This special Masonic publication was written with you in mind. Think of it as a chance to learn the history of The Ohio Masonic Home, the vision for the future, and debunking some of the myths that have evolved over the years. We’ve come a long way since our days as a home for widows and children. Now, each of our campuses offers premier lifestyle choices ranging from independent living villas to skilled nursing care, with something for everyone over 55. Even so, one of the most common things we hear from people is that they will move to an OMH campus when they’re ready for the extra help. The great thing about someone moving into a villa in their 50s is that they’re able to enjoy all the luxuries and amenities – like no maintenance or yard work – but can still depend on us to be there for them when their needs change as they age. You play an important role in our work and in fulfilling the mission of The Ohio Masonic Home. How you fill that role is up to you. Whether you live at one of our campuses, work for The Ohio Masonic Home, volunteer with The Ohio Masonic Home Resource Center, or donate to The Ohio Masonic Home Foundation, you make it possible to give everyone a choice in where and how they age. As you read through this, our challenge to you is to consider: How will you support The Ohio Masonic Home mission? Fraternally, Brother Scott Buchanan CEO The Ohio Masonic Home

Brother Steven M. Petitjean Executive Director The Ohio Masonic Home Foundation
