Ack-Lee Dempsey Passion EX-93 won the 4-year-old class at the Mid-East Summer National Holstein Show at the Ohio State Fair and was tapped as the Senior Champion and Grand Champion Cow by Judge Tim Abbott. This fall, she was recently named the Reserve Senior Champion and the Reserve Grand Champion at the 2018 Eastern Fall National Show and is owned by Ack-Lee Registered Holsteins, Pat Conroy and Peter Vail. The results of the Ohio State Fair are included in this issue!

SEPTEMBER/OC TOBER 2018

From the Executive Director By Tom Thorbahn

By the time you receive this issue most of the fall shows will be in full swing. Good luck to all of our Ohio breeders exhibiting at the shows this fall. Also, congratulations to all of you who exhibited at the Ohio State Fair, it was a tremendous show with super quality all the way down the line. As we move into fall, please make note that the Ohio Holstein Association is having a Fall Breeder Meeting, and we are hosting a Fall Sale. Look for Paul and Dave’s articles for more information on both events. The board continues to evaluate our breed sales; with the present economy of the dairy industry we will not be sponsoring as many sales as in past years. Should the dairy economy change we will reevaluate our state sponsored sales. Some of you had the opportunity to attend the National Holstein Convention in Traverse City, Michigan in late June and early July. The Michigan Holstein members did a tremendous job hosting this event; highlighting great Michigan herds and exciting tourist attractions in the area. Many wonderful comments were heard, we thank the Michigan Association for all their hard work and dedication for hosting a great opportunity to bring Holstein folks together. Speaking of National Conventions, if you haven’t heard, Ohio is hosting the National Convention in 2021, in Canton at the Football Hall of Fame, June 21-26. We will need many Ohio members and friends to host the event for our fellow breeders across the U.S. Julie Renner and I have been working on the many committees we will need to host the Convention. We hope each of you will give consideration to planning and helping one of the committees which are listed in this issue. If your name is omitted, it was not intentional, please notify Julie, me, or a Committee Chair; we can always use your help. Lots of work to be done, let’s all work together for the good of our Ohio Association to make a memorable experience for our Holstein friends. Have a safe and productive harvest. 5

A Message From The President By Paul Haskins

“The season for enjoying the fullness of life—partaking of the harvest, sharing the harvest with others, and reinvesting and saving portions of the harvest for yet another season of growth.” --Denis Waitley “Fall has always been my favorite season. The time when everything bursts with its last beauty, as if nature had been saving up all year for the grand finale.” –Lauren DeStefano Two upcoming reasons to enjoy the fall season with the Ohio Holstein Association: Saturday, October 27th at the Wayne County Fairgrounds, Wooster, OH will be the venue for our Ohio Fall Elite Sale. Sales Director Dave Gunkelman and staff have been assembling another sure-to-be outstanding lineup featuring something for everyone: milking cows, deep pedigrees, show ring

type, high genomics, and more! More information on the sale on page 47. Saturday, November 10th for the Ohio Holstein Association Fall tour, hosted this year by the Simpson family at Plainfield Farms, Belmont, OH in District 3—please see the ad and accompanying story on pages 12 & 13 for more details. Don and Ben are a pair of the most genuine and friendliest Ohio Holstein fanatics that I can think of. Recently I was discussing fall tour plans with Tom Thorbahn and he relayed that years ago he had purchased an animal from Simpsons through a sale and that Don was excited to see her going to an accomplished herd like Crimson Lane. No further discussion about the animal herself that had changed hands, just reflection about how interested Don was and how enjoyable it was to talk cows and do business with another like-minded Holstein enthusiast. As I’ve said before, we really are a people business, a people business that just happens to like cows. Please join us this fall for both events to make new and renew connections with fellow Holstein breeders! Thanks, Paul Haskins 419-618-4028 • phaskins17199@hotmail.com P.S.: A couple columns ago, I wrote about Tye Henschen and efforts by friends to honor his memory, and I’m pleased to report that the inaugural Tye Henschen Memorial Award for best udder at the National Holstein Futurity was awarded to the Stammen family of Wabash-Way Holsteins. More information about the futurity and Mid-East National Summer Holstein Show at the Ohio State Fair starting on pages 14 & 15.

Building Leaders in the dairy industry!

Thank you for your donations to help sponsor the 2018 Ohio State ATI Dairy Cattle Judging Team. We have a terrific group of students excited about the coming year of judging contests. The judging team experience helps participating students develop thinking, reasoning, and critical analysis skills; evaluate cattle; expand understanding and awareness of the industry; and strengthen the commitment to the dairy industry. Judging team members have a higher potential for future leadership in the dairy industry. Incidentally, the Ohio State ATI dairy team has competed successfully for over 20 years: finishing in the top 6 teams each participating year at World Dairy Expo with multiple wins in both the traditional and practical contests at World Dairy Expo. Your gift eases the financial burden on students and sets them up for a great year of competition. Royce Thornton Dairy Programs Coordinator

Summer 2015

By Maggie Mathews, Ohio Junior Holstein Association Reporter Now that Fall is here, Juniors are back in school and many of us are looking forward to participating in the upcoming National Shows. The summer kept us busy with county shows, 4-H and FFA projects, vacations, state fairs and national convention. Congratulations to Korey Oechsle for being elected as the Area II Junior Advisory Committee (JAC) Representative with the Holstein Association USA Junior Program. Korey was selected during the National Holstein Convention that was held in Michigan this June and will be working with other Holstein Juniors from across the United States on youth programs, policies and

activities. The juniors wrapped up their raffle during the Ohio State Fair selling $2,500 in tickets. All proceeds will go towards funding the Junior activities during the 2020 National Holstein Convention that Ohio will be hosting. Thank you to our sponsors-Beck’s, Sullivan Supply, Pine Tree Dairy, Jenny Thomas, TransOva, PBS Animal Health and Ohio Holstein News-for sponsoring the prizes. Speaking of the State Fair, the Juniors would like to say a special thankyou to ADA-Mideast for generously sponsoring our pizza party for our summer meeting that we held in Coo-

per Arena! Every year, ADA supports our Junior activities that we host at the state fair and we appreciate all that they do for our program. Please keep an eye on your email and the OJHA Facebook page for upcoming meetings and other Junior activities. There is never a deadline to sign up to participate in the Junior program, so we continue to invite anyone who is interested to attend a meeting (and parents are always encouraged to attend). Good luck to everyone participating on the Ohio judging teams this fall and all who are exhibiting in the National shows!

Plainfield Farms Hosts Fall Tour By Melissa Hart Since 1944, four generations of Simpsons have produced one of nature’s most perfect foods on Plainfield Farms (D-3) in Belmont, Ohio. Orville Simpson, Sr., bought the ground and started the farm with grade Holsteins. Now 74 years later, the 100 head dairy is 100 percent Registered Holsteins and Don and Danette Simpson are at the helm with their son, Ben, moving into position as the fourth generation. On Saturday, November 10th at 11 am, they will open the farm gate and welcome everyone in for the Ohio Holstein Association (OHA) Fall Tour. Don took his first interest in the registered side of dairying in high

school when he was involved in FFA. He bought his first Registered Holstein as a teenager and has since transitioned the entire herd into Registered Holsteins. Don and Danette met in 4-H, “We met when I was showing beef and hogs and I was from a dairy farm and Danette was showing dairy cows and she was from a beef farm.” Don continued, “It was Danette who got me interested in showing dairy, if it wasn’t for her, I’m not sure we would be showing today.” The 90s marked the beginning of the third generation on Plainfield Farms as Don and Danette married and took over the responsibilities of the farm from Don’s parents, Orville, Jr., and Betty Simpson. “My mom was full time on the farm with my dad and Danette has been involved all these years with me,”

Don commented. Over the years the breeding philosophy has evolved at Plainfield Farms. “Back in the 90s I had a young nutritionist who was about my age and we were going to set the world on fire.” Don continued, “We had a rolling herd average pushing 30,000 pounds back when 30,000 was unheard of. Cows didn’t breed back, they had ulcers, my vet was giving me discounts on twisted stomach surgeries and I had come to the conclusion that our 95-pound average, milking two times a day, was causing more problems than it was worth.” Today, the cows at Plainfield Farms are fed a ration with a high forage content, “I like cows with capacity, that can turn large amounts of forage into milk. Our cows have an 80-pound average

with 4.2 percent fat.” Don continued, “We went from one extreme to the other. Now, my cows are healthy, the hoof trimmer isn’t doing near as much corrective trimming and it’s just more profitable.” Keeping the feed bill low is crucial in today’s economy, “Every herd has a point where they will cross the line where they won’t make money and we have found what works for us. I’m making more money with my milk because I’m feeding homegrown forages and it keeps the feed bill down,” Don commented. The perfect size cow at Plainfield is 62-63 inches, “When we breed for type, we have to be careful not to get the cows too big and extreme,” Don said as he explained, they have a large variety of bulls they use in the herd. “I like to see a good cow family behind the bulls that we use.” While Doorman, Dempsey, Defiant, Denver and Unix are some of the bulls they are currently using, deep pedigreed cow families have found a niche at Plainfield, “We are working with members of Frosty’s family, Carlo leader 174, Sid Beauty, Goldwyn Brittney, TriDay Ashlyn, the PR Barbie family, Grayview B-D Chrissy and, of course, we have some members of the Roxy family that we are working with as well.” Harvue Windhammer Franki-ET was just raised to EX-94 this year, but this Plainfield headliner’s path to success wasn’t without a few bumps in the road. Developing foundation cow families for the next generation to build upon was one of the goals at Plainfield and Franki was filling the bill. “We purchased her as a calf at the Virginia Sale of Stars. She calved in at 2 years old and scored VG-87. She maxed out at EX-92 as a three-year-old and that’s when the interest began to build.” Don continued, “Danette was very influential in the decision to keep her when we had offers on the table and it would have made more sense to sell her.” Soon after the Simpsons decided to hang on to Franki, she went off feed and was going downhill fast. They took her to the Ohio State University Vet clinic where they did exploratory surgery on both sides of the rumen and found peritonitis on one side, a nail stuck to the magnet on the

other side and gave her a forty percent chance of living. While the outlook was bleak, they continued to treat Franki and she bounced back with a vengeance. This past spring, she was raised to EX94 MS94, was the second place fiveyear-old at the Mid-East Spring National Show, the third place five-year-old at the Mid-East Summer National Show and the Supreme Champion at the West Virginia State Fair. “Danette gets all the credit for making the decision to keep Franki, and it turned out to be a good one,” Don added. Franki is serving as a foundation for the fourth generation at Plainfield, “For as long as I can remember Ben has always wanted be involved on the farm. As he was growing up, there were times when I wondered if we should encourage him or discourage him, but we’ve always tried to encourage him in wanting to be involved,” Don explained. While Ben is integrally involved in the day to day operations at Plainfield, it was when he solidified his interest in staying on the family farm, that the Simpsons built a new facility including a 120 free stall barn and a double eight, parallel parlor with a special needs area. Last year they built a box stall barn where show cows and donor dams are housed and presently there are three, EX-94 in that barn, including Franki, Gloryland Lb Linette Rae owned by Hartline Valley Farms and their first home bred 94-point cow, Plainfield Damion Ginger. The Simpsons future breeding program is taking on a new look, “I just bought my first rack of beef semen.” Don explained, “For the top ten percent of the herd we will use sexed semen and to keep the numbers in check, on the bottom twenty-five percent, for those recips that don’t get pregnant with an embryo, they will be bred to beef bulls.” While the milk market is discouraging, Don is most disheartened at the fact that animals aren’t worth what they once were. “Our goal is not to milk more cows, but to try to sell more animals. I would rather milk 85 cows and sell more two-year-olds, but that’s not where our market is right now.” As low prices hang on Don keeps a

positive outlook, “There is light at the end of the tunnel, things are tough, but I believe it will come around.” He added, “Some say that blue registration paper doesn’t mean anything anymore, but I can’t think of anything else that has brought me more friendships and I’ve enjoyed more, than being involved in the Registered Holstein business.” Ben has two siblings, his twin Robert, who is married to Arika and a sister, Emily who is dating Dillion Brown. While they all have other careers, they are all active on the farm. Ben’s girlfriend, Hannah Dye, enjoys helping out on the weekends at Plainfield Farm and has been involved with the show string over the summer. “Hannah does a great job showing for us, she’s a hard worker and it’s great to have her as part of our team here at Plainfield,” Don commented. Plainfield Farms has earned the PBR award for 14 years and has a BAA of 108.1. They milk 104 cows and farm approximately 450 acres. In addition, they have a 40 head beef cow-calf herd that Orville Jr., manages. Visitors are always welcome, and you can see more of their farm on the Plainfield Farms Facebook page.

The Queen: Allison McCumons

Hello all! I am Allison McCumons. I am originally from Anna, Ohio, but now I live in Wapakoneta, Ohio. I am the daughter of Molly Frey and Chuck McCumons. I am 20 years old and have two younger brothers, Bryce (17) and Brady (15). I am a sophomore at Wilmington College double majoring in Agriculture and Education, with a minor in Communication Arts. This past summer I interned at Sunrise Cooperative in Uniopolis, Ohio. I also worked at Marste Holsteins in Anna and Quietcove Holsteins in Wapakoneta. With fall in the air, that only means one thing (okay two things). One is harvest season. So, I pray that everyone has a safe and successful harvest this year. Fall also means that football season is here, Ohio State football! If anyone knows 16

my family, you are aware that I grew up in a divided household: The Buckeyes vs TTUN! So, the biggest game of the Buckeyes football season is when we play TTUN. That is THE biggest game of the regular season for me. You can bet that every Saturday and Sunday I will be watching football, whether I am at home or in my dorm room. I get my love of football from my dad. I get the love for the dairy industry from both of my parents and grandparents. Outside of high school, my life consisted of dairy cows, FFA events, and softball practices and games. Now that I’m in college, there really isn’t much difference. Okay, maybe I’m not playing softball or an FFA member anymore, but the dairy cows are always there for me! Throughout my life, I have had a lot of inspiration from multiple people. First, I would like to give credit to God for allowing me to do what I do and love. Next, I would like to thank my show family for encouraging me throughout the good and bad times, even when we are not at a cow show. Even though she may no longer be living, my Great-Grandmother Yoder was always an inspiration to me, and I hope that I can live a wonderful life like as she did. I would also like to thank Marlene Steinke for being there when I needed someone to talk, and to take my mind off things, or if I was really pondering something. Then last, but certainly not least, I would like to give a huge shout out to my Mother. She has and always will be my biggest supporter, role model, and friend a girl could ever have. And, for those that I haven’t mentioned, but

Ohio Holstein Marketing Buzz by Dave Gunkelman, OHA Marketing and Sales Manager How was your summer show season? From what I saw at the Ohio State Fair and the various district shows that I attended, the passion shown by Ohio Holstein breeders runs deep. The quality was as good or better than ever and even with a lag-

ging dairy economy, breeders proved they still like to compete. As we move into the fall season, you have a couple of options to promote your herd and spend time with other Ohio breeders at the fall sale and the fall tour. On October 27th, Ohio Holstein breeders have the opportunity to buy into some of the best cow families in Ohio at the Ohio Holstein Fall Elite Sale to be held in Wooster. The line-up for this looks like a great group that includes genomics, show heifers and solid milk cows from deep pedigreed cow families. See the online catalog on DairyAgendaToday.com or on our Ohioholstein.com website. The Fall Tour will be on November 10th at Plainfield Farms in Belmont, Ohio. This is a great chance to visit with other breeders and to see how the Simpson family makes their operation work. I encourage you to take advantage of the opportunities this fall to learn from and get to know great Ohio Holstein breeders. The November-December issue of the magazine will be here before you know it and it’s a great way to promote your herd and market your cattle. If I can help you in any way with your marketing needs or if you know of someone who would like to join the Ohio Holstein Association, let me know so I can introduce them to one of the best associations out there. Until Next Time, Dave Gunkelman Director of Marketing & Member Services 330-464-3259 • drgunkelman@yahoo.com

Queen’s Corner

By Allison McCumons

It is finally fall, which is my favorite season! It’s my favorite because of all the pretty colors, sights, and amazing smells. But before I get too far, let me give a recap of my summer. Between my internship and traveling across the state to the many district shows, this was one of my busiest summers, but also one of the most memorable! I had such a fun time going from district to district and seeing how each one is different in their own special way. I also saw a lot of quality dairy cattle. It was also great to meet new people and catch up with old friends as we were united with the one thing that we all loved, the Holstein cow. The same thing can be said for State Fair. I had such an amazing time at State Fair. It was different not being in my whites! The

Futurity was everything I thought it would be and more. I thought about it for weeks, but in the moment, it went by in the blink of an eye. As much as I enjoyed it, that night wasn’t my favorite memory of the week. After one of the shows, I let a little girl try on my crown, so she could feel what it was like to be a princess. Seeing her look at my crown and then seeing her face light up with a big smile while wearing it, made me realize how much the younger generation looks up to us. Not just royalty, but everyone. I believe that every person is an inspiration, a role model, whether we are aware of it or not. That was and forever will be one of the greatest moments that I will ever remember. Now that it is fall, that means school is back in session. I started my second year at Wilmington in August and I still love every minute. I never thought I would see the day that I would hear myself say that I cant wait to go back to school! I’m excited that I get to continue my journey in becoming an Ag teacher and to make an impact on the future generations of agriculture.

“The future belongs to the few still willing to get our hands dirty.”

It Can Happen to Anyone You find a bull that has it all – top tpi, sound pedigree, high type – and you’re excited to see his first calves. Then a few of those calves turn out great… but the rest are just disappointing. How can great bulls and good cows produce disappointing daughters?

Because Mating Matters Linear can’t tell the whole story. Two cows may have similar linear breakdowns but develop problems for entirely different reasons, problems that steal profit from your pocket. Only aAa® Animal Analysis studies form and function of the entire cow to help increase your chance of getting more of any bull’s better daughters… and fewer of his disappointing ones.

ENOGEN FEED Unlocks the energy potential

of your feedlot or dairy ration Enogen Feed corn hybrids offer proven genetics and traits with excellent yield potential to help unlock the energy potential of your feedlot or dairy ration. When fed as grain or silage, Enogen Feed corn hybrids offer a step-change in starch and sugar availability that provides more available energy to feedlot or dairy cattle. Enogen Feed corn has been shown to provide an increase in feed efficiency by an average of 5 percent in beef cattle production.3 When Enogen Feed corn silage is incorporated into a dairy ration, predictive modeling software has indicated a potential 3–5 percent gain in potential income over feed cost.4 Incorporating Enogen Feed corn hybrids into your beef or dairy operation is as easy as replacing the corn or silage you currently grow and feed on-farm.5

Yesterday’s Cowpath Leading up to the 100th Anniversary of the Ohio Holstein Association, Barb Lumley will be writing a special column featuring special points in time for the Ohio Holstein Association. Enjoy your walk down Yesterday’s Cowpath. By Barb Lumley From the 1977 National Convention Souvenir Booklet The 92nd Annual Convention of the Holstein Friesian Association was held June 26th thru 30th, 1977 in Columbus, Ohio.Convention co-chairmen were Sterling Timmons and James Lewis. The Ohio Holstein Executive Secretary was Cal Wilcox. The theme was “Holstein Heaven in ‘77”. Officers of the Holstein- Friesian Association of America were President, Gordon W. Newton; Vice-President, W. R. Brooks; Executive Secretary, Charles J. Larson; Executive Chairman, Robert H. Rumler; Treasurer & Office Manager, Robert B. Kessen; National Director from Ohio, Richard Indoe; Ohio Program Director, Neil Hammerschmidt. Ohio Holstein Association officers in 1977 were Dale Ring, President; Sterling Timmons, Vice-President; Ron Burke, Secretary; and James Kemp, Teasurer. The Governor of Ohio was James A. Rhodes. The sale featured daughters of Elevation, Starlite, Matt, Astronaut, Jewel, Apollo, Chief and more. The three daughters of Gene Acres Felica May Fury 3E 97 selling were sired by Starlite and Astronaut. The 1976 All-Ohio 2 Year Old from an EX 94 All-Ohio dam was selling, as was the EX Grand Champion, VA 1976 by Elevation, and several contract cows. Articles included “The History of NOBA” by Bryce Weiker. In July 1940 a group of Seneca County farmers put together a small artificial breeding association, which grew into the present NOBA, Inc.From a few borrowed bulls, a rented farmstead and one veterinarian technician it grew to the present three production studs and semen sold all over the world in volumes exceeding 675,000 vials per year. Kenneth Indoe wrote about “Ohio Holstein History”.He reported that in 1867 the first registered Holstein bull in Ohio was shipped to O. F. The bull was heavily used in Wayne County area and made a tremendous improvement in the dairy cattle in that part of Ohio. His name was Zuider Zee 4th and he was No. 59 in Vol. 1 of the 1872 Herdbook.Molly Brown, a heifer imported from Holland in 1881, was the foundation of the Bawndale Herd of C.
