Chinese Lunar New Year

January

1

Chinese Lunar New Year is the biggest fesitval to Chinese. When New Year is approaching, Chinese people try to clean everything because they want to sweep away all the bad luck and welcome a great New Year. Holidays usually start from the New Year Eve, in which night we are always gathering dinner with family. Also, the elders will give the youngers "hong bao" (red envelop) to wish them good luck. The underlying message of New Year celebrations is of peace and happiness for family members and friends.

Lantern Festival

New Year holiday will last till the 15th day of first lunar month, it is called Lantern Festival, hence it is also known as the Yuanxiao. We carry lanterns of various shapes in the night and go out to street to admire the beautiful lighting decorated by local government and temple. On this day, the family will come together to eat tanyuan which symbolizes completeness and happiness. It carries the same significance as the reunion dinner.

May

5 Dragon Boat Festival Dragon Boat Festival is also known as Double Fifth Day. Dragon Boat races are the most exciting part of the festival, drawing crowds of spectators.

Dragon Boats are generally brightly painted and decorated canoes. A drummer and flag-catcher stand at the front of the boat. Another aspect of the Double Fifth Day is the timing. It is said that if you can balance a raw egg on its end at exactly noon on Double Fifth Day, the rest of the year will be lucky.

Chungyuan Festival Just as the West has Halloween for ghosts and ghouls, so also does Taiwan have a holiday to fete the departed spirits of the underworld : Ghost Festival, a popular occasion celebrated throughout China on the 15th day of the seventh lunar month. Today, Ghost Festival is more modest than in the past both in grandeur and scale as the government encourages more frugal forms of prayer in folk customs. This kind of economy is an apt realization of virtuous action that the Festival has always meant to foster.

Mid-Autumn festival

Also known as the “Full Moon Festival, which falls on the fifteen day of the eighth lunar month. At this time, the moon’s orbit is at its lowest angle to the horizon, making the moon appear brighter and larger than any other time of the year. Traditionally celebrated outdoors under the moonlight, people eat moon cakes and gaze at the moon. In modern times, barbecues with families and friends are also common.
