‘Tis the season to be jolly…

Other than the blatant bombardment of commercialism this time of year, I love the warmth of the Xmas season. The wrapping of presents a few days before (I’m always late), whilst drinking hot chocolate, wearing my slippers and headscarf. I love when it’s just us, my family, those in my tight circle, shutting out the world, stuffing our faces whilst wearing paper crowns. It’s been the same routine for years, but I’m happy with that. Up until my late 20’s I was guilty of piercing holes in the wrapping paper of my gifts to nosey inside…I know…I’m ashamed! Here’s a thank you gift for your support throughout the year! Merry Christmas...

LISELORE FROWIJN INTERVIEW 1. How does being Dutch set you apart from other designers and contribute to your success? In other words, what interesting traits do you bring to fashion as a result of your nationality? Since my work can be described as artisanal itself, I would say this aspect is connected to my Dutch background. The Netherlands has an impressive history of great painters, such as Rembrandt and Vermeer, who examined new paths regarding the use of light and colours. Some of them also had a humouristic or ironic approach, like the impressive Jheronimus Bosch. I can’t stop looking at his surrealistic, magnificent spectacles. I am very attached to art history, especially paintings. Within my work I achieve to create paintings as if I am a painter myself. Not only do I paint my fabrics by hand, I also build my collections layer by layer, with different materials, colors, silhouettes and prints. Yet I don’t claim that art and fashion are the same. For me, fashion is a different medium with a similar approach. 2. What have you learned from working at other fashion companies that will assist you in your work in the future? Also, do you have any plans to turn your label into a business eventually? Working for other (fashion) companies is of great importance for a starting designer. After the bachelor program at the institute of arts ArtEZ where I graduated, I had no experience in the field except for an internship at Peter Pilotto in London. After my graduation-show I im

mediately started to work for an Italian Textile Company, Mantero Seta in Como and later on I developed a collection for a company who is of big influence in the West-African Market: Vlisco. These experiences taught me all about the more practical part of fashion: all logistics and financial matters that come along with making beautiful products. At school you learn to develop your signature. After school one has to learn all about the business part of fashion in the field. Also with designing a look for Chloé during my participation on Hyères, I imagined myself working for Chloé and being a Chloé-woman myself. This is a very important lesson I learned from working at other fashion companies: you have to put yourself in the place of the client to gain the best result. 3. It is clear that Matisse greatly influences your work. What pieces of his in particular give you the most inspiration? The optimism and lightness in his work. My final collection was inspired by the work of Matisse, the second collection was inspired on the works of other great artists such as Kokoschka and David Hockney. What all these artist have in common is the fact that by their use of beautiful colors, the viewer receives a touch of their amazing energy. It is this energy that equals the energy I put in my work by painting my fabrics by hand, and developing the silhouettes as if they are collages themselves. A year after my final-

final collection based upon on the cut-outs of Matisse, there was an amazing exhibition on his work in Tate Modern London. It was such a great and overwhelming experience to see his works all together on life-size scale. 4. Now that Matisse has such a strong presence in your work, are there any other artists that you plan on looking to for ideas? Yes, as mentioned before I am always touched by many artists, and every collection emphasize one of them as the main influence on my work. I am very fond of modern art as well. Such as the painting of Gerhard Richter. It’s something of our time, but the artists are ahead of us: just like fashion designers they try to catch the ‘’zeitgeist’’ to translate this into a piece of art, which can be very relevant and touching. 5. Because you find adequate inspiration from artwork, are there any other aspects of art, like theatre or music, that inspire you? As a designer I feel the continuous drive to capture the energy I obtain from art, music, people, and different cultures I am surrounded by, in my work. Fashion is the best medium to translate all of this in one eclectic vibe. It became my playing field, and the challenge is to find the unexpected. My designs are balancing on the narrow border of high and low cultures. Every new design is as a living painting, carefully built up as a collage, where I am always searching for the perfect balance between aestheticism and imperfection, juxtaposed all together.

6. What piece from your “Fracture Space” collection most stands out to you and why? I believe it’s the piece with the little pieces of jersey, that we’ve knotted together into a new vibrant fabric full of colors. It reminds me of the type of luxury I try to catch: a clash between raw sports and colorful luxury. 7. How has working as Creative Director of Mantera Seta textile company influenced your work and what have you learned about the luxury fashion houses that gain their material from there? It was such an amazing opportunity to work for them. I was given the unique chance to put all my creative freedom in the collection, while working with their archive at the same time. The result is a beautiful collection, well balanced between new and old designs. By July 2015 the collection will be in stores all over the world. While doing my research in their archives in Como I saw the most beautiful fabrics they developed for their clients, such as Prada, Kenzo and Chanel, and this abled me to witness the luxury and high quality of their materials at first sight. If there is one important thing I learned it’s about the fact that the quality of the fabrics is one of the most important aspects of the result of the products you make. 8. What types of women do you hope to appeal to with your clothes and how do you hope your clothes will impact society? My bold designs are for women who are not afraid of presenting the world their power and energy. They are women with a curiosity for the world, they are explor-

explorers in heart and soul; ambitious, curious and independent. 9. How do you plan on expanding your combination of comfortable, sporty attire with a luxury look in the future? Also, What do these two types of looks have in common and how have you achieved in combining them through your “Fracture Space” collection? In the future, I wish to maintain on expending the combination of a sporty touch, attired with luxury, the way I do it now, but with my new collection it’s my purpose to develop fabrics which have this combination of luxury and sport in one type of textile. So the comforting part of the sportiness and the rich quality of luxury that these two types of looks have in common is that they are both aspects of our time that we want to have integrated in our wardrobe As a modern woman, you do many different things during a day and it’s my ideal image that you can wear one amazing look that stands out at work during the day, being comfortable, but sophisticated and edgy in the evening as well, while having dinner. 10. Finally, what exciting plans or news regarding your label would you like to share with us, and what can we expect from you in the future? At this moment I am working in my studio to develop a new collection. I am very excited about this new work and hope it will blow every one’s mind.

I will present a preview in Amsterdam during Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, and I hope to arrange a big show and showroom during Paris Fashion Week February 2015 to present this new collection. Also, as a designer I wish many more, beautiful, new, collaborations with other companies will come up, since I think my signature and view on life can be interesting to see in a different context.

PAPERMAN REVIEW

Walt Disney Animation Studios never fails when it comes to heart-warming love stories with a comedic touch. The 2012 production Paperman is no different, as it is a charming account of a young man who meets the love of his life on a commuter train and is determined to find her once her train departs. This compelling film encompasses both romance and comedy, providing 7 minutes of quality entertainment and good feelings. Directed by John Kahrs, this black and white hand-drawn computer-animated masterpiece gives an inspiring account of true love through the intriguing, creative means of a man with a lot of paper at his disposal. This short film won the Oscar for Best Animated Short Film, and has continued to receive acclaim as an outstanding work of art. The simple story of how a whirlwind of paper airplanes can bring two people together in the big city is tremendously appealing and a joy to observe. As the two protagonists cross paths amidst a storm of paper airplanes that guides them to find one another, the film’s classic black-andwhite look and touching story makes it a joy to watch over and over again. John Kahrs as George and Kari Walghren as Meg, giving stunning voice performances in this inspiring love story, and, although the film is mostly silent, gripping music and gorgeous visuals make it a pleasure. DALET

There’s a rising star popping up on the scene known as Dalet, real name, David Nwator; this writer, rapper and producer hails from Manchester. It’s not every day we hear an UK rapper perform with a northern accent, but you’re guaranteed to feel the vibe from this young artist. His flow is poetical and graceful. Dalet’s musical journey started at the tender age of 10 using digital audio workstations. He improved on his music-making abilities when he discovered Fruity Loops (a popular music production software). From that point on, Dalet began producing music for local artists and with determination and perseverance, he went on to win a city-wide competition called Urban Superstar in 2006. From there, things began to take a radical change in Dalet’s life as he had a conversion and began taking a new approach to his music. A spiritual conversion followed in the same year, and he continued this musical journey as a brand new person with a new worldview and perspective.

Dalet went on to form a group known as Setting The Pace and performing at Unity Radio’s Peace Week. From there he joined ‘RTS’ (Reclaiming The Streets). Two years later he moved to Birmingham to study for a degree in Marketing at Aston Business School. Dalet, along with RTS, went on to make an impact on the local scene with their unique Kingdom Links concert series and playing at festivals such as New Wine & Soul Survivor. Pretty soon RTS put their moments on hold. Dalet began the new and long journey as a solo artist. Now, in 2014, Dalet has just released his debut project, “Woods”. His music has transformed into a output for self-expression, a journey towards genuineness and the way of enlightening society with the sometimes-elusive realities of absolute truth. Keep an eye out for this budding artist. Contact: http://www.dvdlt.co.uk/contact/ BY MICHAEL NDEBUMADU

THE INTERVIEW

Describe the brand in 5 words… Innovative, individual, quality, modern and experimental. Where does the name Reclaim come from? The name Reclaim links to the fact that the material we primarily use, the rubber inner tubes, is recycled (reclaimed). By reclaiming the rubber I’m giving it a new purpose when it would typically be destroyed. Tell me about the start-up of the brand; where did the idea come from? The idea for the brand was born whilst I was studying Fashion at university. The project I was working on at that time was based around innovation and innovative practices. This led me both to the rubber material and also the ‘interlocking’ method, which is used to put the bags together. I continued with this throughout university. I got some great feedback and saw potential in the idea, encouraging me to continue after I had graduated and explore it further. What inspires you? How do you come up with the concept? The concept behind the brand is to produce a sustainable range of handbags and accessories that will change people’s perceptions of recycled products and test the limits of re-use. Whilst also emerging ourselves within the fashion industry and through the use of innovative and contemporary design, I hope to produce something beautiful out of something that would have otherwise been waste.

I look to a lot of things for inspiration; however, the biggest things that influence the design are construction and architecture. I love looking at the structures and the shapes they create and trying in some way to build that or at least some part of it into the designs. I also look to other brands that are approaching sustainable design in an innovative way; Elvis and Kresse make great bags using recycled fire hoses. Tell me about your latest collection? The A/W 14 Collection was a really fun one to design. I experimented with more complex designs for two backpacks and a large tote bag. Working with the recycled rubber isn’t always easy as the material is limited in shape, but I was really happy with the outcome and it has paved the way for further progression with our next collections. The range also embraced the season’s love of craftwork with distinct blue and orange PVC weaving and detailed hand stitching, whilst also staying true to Reclaim’s signature style of structure, clean lines and original design. What plans do you have for 2015? We have just recently brought out a range of men’s small accessories, which have been very popular. Lots of people have also been asking for a men’s range of bags so that’s in the pipeline for next year. For the coming women’s range we are experimenting with texture, so expect some interesting, new materials. We would also love to have a pop-up concept store at some point.

Where can people find you? Reclaim products are sold online on our own website, reclaimbags.co.uk. It is also available on other online platforms; ASOS, Wears London, Kuttlefish and Pure N Chic. You can also find our products in the Wears London Boutique shop in Greenwich, Lovely and British in Bermondsey and most recently, our men’s products in Retrogue in Huddersfield. CHRISTMAS

THE TEAM SHAR

Christmas…. forever tainted by commercialism, tarnished by financial greed. The myth of a supreme being traversing the skies, delivering pressies to all kids is a faded memory. I, like many, professing to be good all year through in hope of being one of the lucky few to receive that BMX bicycle or the “glow when you walk trainers”, but alas it never was. Time passed and memories faded, the clock ticked on as the years passed by. Night became day, days turned to weeks, weeks to months, and watch as the years drift on, leading up to the day that I became the legend that was, under-cover Santa. A family of my own, it’s now bestowed on me the job of creating the illusion that will savour the magic that is Christmas. The things we do, go through, just to keep the magic alive…. tantrums in TESCO, Black Friday rumble, commotions in Comet, shamefully where we revert to primal behaviour, all is fair game in the quest for the perfect presents. Sorry grandma, but you’re in the way of me getting that play station 4 and games bundle that my princess would love, so either step aside or I’m going through you. Is it worth it; without a doubt. To see a child’s eyes light up when they receive that dreamed about gift. Those are the moments that I hold dear, moments that makes it all worthy It’s Christmas and I for one will hold on to the tradition, shared with those close or far, family or friends, acquaintance or colleagues. So put the “merry” in your lives and not just in your glass. - ADRIAN RICHARD-

My favorite Christmas memories aren’t the typical ones like, spending it with family, waking up to everything covered in snow or sitting round a cosy fire with loved ones. As a child, Christmas was my favorite time of the year and I always looked forward to the excitement of laying out the milk and cookies for Santa and a carrot for his reindeer. Waking up to see the snacks had been eaten and a pile of presents under the glistening Christmas tree was the most electrifying feeling. However, one year, when I was around 8 years old, I overheard my sisters talking about how I still believed in Santa. Slowly pieces started to come together; like how the wrapping paper Santa had used was in my Mum’s room and why the handwriting of the gift labels was so similar. Then it hit me that he wasn’t real. I was so heartbroken that I cried for the whole of Christmas day. Now me and my family look back and laugh at how much I over reacted and to this day my sisters still tease me about it which I suppose is a nice reminder of how special and exciting the holidays really are. ALANA REID

MEMORIES

RE THEIR MEMORIES

I don’t really have any deep Christmas memories. One reoccurring memory is of my mum other saying “Every day is my ChristmaIs.” To me as a child, this was her excuse of not getting any presents. Anyway, most of the time in my household we just used to eat food. Cook a bit of this and that a few drinks, and that’s it.... I’ve never really had an extravagant Christmas. The most that comes to mind is the shows on TV. The whole nicely decorated, fabricated Christmas. Happy face, happy atmosphere.. happy happy HAPPY. Infact TV Christmases were something that floated around my Christmas memories. That almost unattainable image of Christmas that has been pumped out to us from TV and ads…etc. Anyway, I do remember Christmas 2001 - I got sick! I was a bit unwell/ fever or something like that. I remember having to take some medicine (tablets) for a few days. On Dec 25th of that year I went to a family-friend’s house, ate food and played Dreamcast. Pretty fun, right? My Christmas memories are pretty lowkey.... no drama. But I’m thankful anyway. MICHAEL NDEBUMADU

My favourite Christmas memory is no doubt Regent Street’s shimmering lights during the holiday season. London is by far the best place to spend Christmas. It’s classic festive atmosphere and busy nightlife, and the city’s gorgeous decorations make it the perfect place to spend the holidays. Walking down Regent Street among the glowing lights is a tremendous experience that really complements the season’s spirit and warms the heart. MAISIE HAYDEN

ILL FORTUNE INTERVIEW

FASHION BRAND

Describe the brand in 5 words… Nostalgic trip illuminating the street

Where does the name ill Fortune come from? In truth, out of nowhere. We were sitting trying to think up names with some help from earths creative juices and it had the nicest ring to it. Meanings can be derived from anything by anyone in millions of different ways. The way we see it and the way it all fell into place is turning something associated as negative into a positive, turning your fortune, creating a positive revival of that thing. For us it was reviving 80s and 90s fashions into something relevant today. This is shown in the designs as well with the main focus on the ‘Fortune’ with the ‘Ill’ taking a back seat. Tell me about the start-up of the brand; what made you decide this was what you wanted to do? The fear we all have…. it’s drilled into everyone during their education, getting a 9-5 and just ‘getting by’. Fuck that, we are here to do more than that and to actually enjoy our ‘work’. Both of us took a look at our current situation and we were both in agreement that something had to be done to make our lives more enjoyable. We both had an interested in street wear fashion, lifestyle trends and the illuminati. What fits better than to be able to do all of that in a street wear fashion brand!?

Tell me about the start-up of the brand; what made you decide this was what you wanted to do? The fear we all have…. it’s drilled into everyone during their education, getting a 9-5 and just ‘getting by’. Fuck that, we are here to do more than that and to actually enjoy our ‘work’. Both of us took a look at our current situation and we were both in agreement that something had to be done to make our lives more enjoyable. We both had an interested in street wear fashion, lifestyle trends and the illuminati. What fits better than to be able to do all of that in a street wear fashion brand!? What inspires you? People. The sacrifice and grind people go through, the crazy variety of people you see walking down any city centre in the UK, this new emerging ‘fuck you’ culture that is arising everywhere. That is inspirational, we take that attitude and then we take 80s and 90s influence and put it into everything we do. Taking bits of people and throwing it into each concept and see what can be created. Tell me about your latest collection? We are stepping it up by introducing more bespoke pieces, in particular the ill Fortune Soccer Tee. We have taken the inspiration of this from retro football tops and put our own ill Fortune twist onto it. This has resulted in a cool range that we will definitely be adding to in the near future.

We have also introduced some accessories with the ill Fortune branded backpack, always an essential. Not too big that you are going camping with, but a good handy city backpack to hold all those 21st century distractions. Keeping warm over winter is always on your minds, so we have created real nice thick comfy jumpers and zippers to enjoy… an essential in every youth’s cupboard. The next collection is shaping up; we are heading to the 90s with the introduction of long sleeve tops, pastel t-shirts, skirts and additions to the Soccer Tee collection. We also have more accessories on the horizon including more bags and scrunches. What plans do you have for 2015? 2015 is already planned to be a very busy year for us! We are making the transition from only being an online retailer to having a high street presence. We are currently being stocked in The Bizzare store in Manchester’s high street and will be adding to this very shortly. The goal is to have a presence in every main high street in the UK. Not bad for a start up only a year old… We will also be making the transition from a stock room in my mum and dads to having our own premises with a fancy office and stock room that we can do as we please (could be very dangerous).

Where can people find you? Mancunians can find us in The Bizzare store in the northern quarter; everyone else can head to www.illfortuneclothing. com or Asos Marketplace. If they are after some videos, they can subscribe to our channel illfortuneclothing. Social media freaks can find us at the following: Instagram: @illfortuneclothing Twitter: _illfortune Facebook: /illfortuneclothing BY CHARMAINE MAINOO
