Welcome Welcome to Derby Theatre’s summer season. This season, we mark Shakespeare 400 – four hundred years since our greatest playwright died on 23 April 1616. Not only do we have a double bill of Hamlet and All’s Well That Ends Well from Bristol’s brilliant Shakespeare at the Tobacco Factory, but we also welcome the hugely exciting Spymonkey, with their production The Complete Deaths – all 75 deaths from Shakespeare’s plays brought to the stage with great skill and humour. Derby Theatre’s festival DEparture Lounge will be back in July with all the best shows before they head to Edinburgh. Take a front row seat as the buzz of Festival comes to Derby. Looking forward, our big production for the autumn will be Stephen Sondheim’s smash-hit musical Sweeney Todd, in a co-production with Mercury Theatre Colchester. Set in Victorian London, this musical thriller is packed with theatricality and high drama, and promises a great night out at the theatre. And of course it’s never too early to book for a Derby Theatre Christmas family production. This year we’re bringing the world of Alice in Wonderland to our stage. Marking ‘Shakespeare 400’, four centuries since the great playwright died, Shakespeare at the Tobacco Factory bring a double bill of his work. Politics, madness, sex and murder play their part in Hamlet, the most famous play in world theatre – a tragedy that is both a thriller and meditation on our human condition. Paired with Hamlet, is the exquisite romantic comedy, All’s Well That Ends Well. Helena, a young woman, uses skills bequeathed to her by her father, to save the French King’s life and is rewarded with the right to choose her own husband. But what if the chosen one won’t play the game? How can she make him love her?

The Complete Deaths Thursday 16 – Friday 17 June All the onstage deaths in Shakespeare performed by ‘four of the greatest clowns working in Britain’. Time Out There are 75 onstage deaths in the works of William Shakespeare. From the Roman suicides in Julius Caesar to snakes in a basket in Antony and Cleopatra. There are stabbings, severed heads, poisonings, mobbings and a smothering. And then there’s the pie in Titus Andronicus. Spymonkey will perform them all – sometimes lingeringly, sometimes messily, sometimes movingly, sometimes musically, always hysterically. The four ‘seriously outrageous, cleverly funny clowns’ (Time Magazine) will scale the peaks of sublime poetry and plumb the depths of darkest depravity. Directed by Tim Crouch (I, Malvolio), The Complete Deaths will be a solemn, sombre and sublimely funny tribute in the 400th year since Shakespeare’s death.

Simon Callow: One Man Band Sunday 5 June, 4pm
Simon Callow is one of the UK's finest and best-loved actors, known for his many roles on stage and screen, including Four Weddings and a Funeral. In One Man Band, the third volume in his epic survey of the life and work of Orson Welles, Callow looks at the triumphs and failures of a man who ambitiously took on one medium after another - theatre, radio, film, television, even ballet at one point - opening up new directions and possibilities with his radical approach. In what will undoubtedly be one of the most popular events of this summer's Derby Book Festival, Simon Callow will read excerpts from the book and talk about what it would have been like to be around him, and ultimately, what it was like to be Orson Welles. Odysseus has come home from the war. His bath’s broken, and he can’t fix it. As he stares at his reflection, he begins to find that his journey back to the people he loves might not be as easy as it seems. Set in a bathroom, Nobody’s Home follows a soldier’s journey through his own mind, as he struggles with the monsters of his past to finally come home. Through physical storytelling, a unique and striking exploration of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder in a modern retelling of Homer’s The Odyssey. Developed with Salisbury Playhouse, with support from Wellcome Trust.
Ventoux is the most fearsome mountain encountered on the Tour de France. It is also the story of Lance Armstrong and Marco Pantani – whose drug-fuelled race there in 2000 was the greatest cycling had ever seen. Ventoux charts the parallel lives of these champions who overcame great adversity in tandem, and the mountain that cast them in opposing directions. Join 2Magpies as they restage the race using breathtaking video accompaniment and a pair of road bikes, asking the question – how far will we go to succeed?

The Mikado Friday 24 & Saturday 25 June Derby Gilbert and Sullivan Company celebrate their 50th Anniversary with perhaps the most popular of Gilbert & Sullivan’s operas, the comic masterpiece, The Mikado. Including many favourites, such as Three Little Maids, A Wandering Minstrel I, The Sun Whose Rays and I’ve Got a Little List, director Andrew Nicklin’s production fully realises the humour of the work, whilst poking fun at the British Establishment. Inspired by Shakespeare’s Coriolanus, I Am England offers a unique perspective on political power and social justice from the generation whose stories are yet to be written.

Love to Learn at University of Derby We have an exciting portfolio of media and performing arts courses. These full-time BA (Hons) courses are taught through practice-based workshops, lectures and seminars. Students will also benefit from the links the University has with Derby Theatre – working alongside professional productions in fantastic facilities. Les Miserables: School Edition Tuesday 5 – Friday 8 July, 7.15pm The epic story recounting the struggle against adversity in 19th-century France. Imprisoned for stealing a loaf of bread, petty thief Jean Valjean is released from prison to not only become an honest man, but the Mayor of a prosperous town and a loving adoptive father, but violating his parole in the process. The relentless Inspector Javert pursues him. Only years later, after Valjean proves his mettle during a bloody student uprising, is the ex-convict finally fully redeemed. By arrangement with Josef Weinberger, Creatio Youth Theatre will debut the globally renowned classic, Les Misérables: School Edition.

Now please take me back to the gym. Join two young men in their quest to become your poster boy. Watch as they rip themselves apart every day, just to sow themselves back together in their sleep. What happens when we take physical conditioning to the extreme? These afflicted males are here to present their disposition.

Filter Thursday 23 June, 8pm Every day, 100 people in the UK start to lose their sight. By 2020, approximately 2.25 million of us will be living with significant sight loss. A multi-sensory experience of light, sound and performance, Filter explores what it's like to lose sight of those you love and the world in which we live. Following an extended research period involving community sight- support groups and local charities, this event will share scenes, moments and possibilities developed by our creative team. The performance will be followed by an informal discussion.

For Children and Young People Youth Theatre Youth Theatre is the life-blood of a good theatre. It allows young people to have fun and express themselves in a friendly environment whilst developing key drama and life skills for their futures. We work towards a major annual show that is professionally produced on our main stage for our two older groups and in our Studio theatre for the two younger groups. How to pay
We can exchange tickets for another performance of the same event at a cost of £1 per ticket. This must be done no later than 24 hours before the event in question and all tickets held by the customer, including Print at Home tickets, must be returned to the Box Office in person or by post. Tickets cannot be exchanged after the event has passed.
We accept all types of card payments, except American Express. Cheques are only accepted for group bookings of 20 or more. We can only reserve seats without payment for group bookings of 10 or more. We can post tickets to you if you are booking 7 days in advance, at a cost of £1. Otherwise, you can collect the tickets from us at your convenience, or we can email them to you to print at home.
Lost tickets can be reprinted free of charge no earlier than one hour before the start of the performance.

Derby Theatre is a 10-minute walk from the train station, follow the signs to intu Derby. We’ll be more than happy to order a taxi to be waiting for you after the performance, please ask at the Box Office upon arrival.
Trentbarton runs buses in Derby and to and from nearby towns and villages. Most buses stop at the bus station – just 5 minutes’ walk from the theatre. You can buy a reduced-price bus ticket with your theatre ticket from the Box Office – either a zigzag city play ticket (unlimited travel in the Derby city area for £2.50) or a zigzag play network ticket (unlimited travel across the whole network for £4.50).
Access
Access for all Derby Theatre welcomes all customers and has an extensive range of services to ensure you have an enjoyable and comfortable visit. Mention your requirements when you book tickets, and don’t hesitate to ask the Duty Manager if there is anything you need on arrival. We have been verified as being an accessible venue for disabled people by CredAbility – an independent quality mark run by disabled people. The relevant icons indicate how we can meet a variety of needs:
Standing and queueing Derby Theatre has seating on all levels of the theatre. You can pre-order your drinks, tickets, merchandise, ice creams and programmes when booking your tickets to avoid queuing. These can be brought to you when you arrive. Our staff can bring refreshments to your seat inside the auditorium at the interval.
Wheelchair access We have a fully accessible drop-off point at the top of the theatre with a permanent ramped double-door entrance. Or alternatively you can park in intu Derby basement car park blue badge area and our lift, situated in bay C, will bring you directly to all floors of the theatre. We have large accessible toilets on all levels. The Bistro on floor 2 is fully accessible and we have low counters at the bar, Box Office and café. We have designated wheelchair spaces inside the auditorium so please mention your requirements when booking.
Assistance dogs Assistance dogs are welcome in all areas of the building. Please talk to the Box Office about any special requirements when booking.
Difficulty accessing visual information If you would like our brochure in large print please enquire at the Box Office. Where possible we provide audio-described performances. Ideal for blind and partially sighted people, audio description is a form of audio-visual translation using the natural pauses in dialogue or between critical sound elements to insert a narrative that translates the visual image into a sense form.
Difficulty accessing audible information Sound enhancement systems are available inside the theatre and studio. The best quality of sound is through our brand new Digital RF headsets, which are available to borrow free from Front of House. You could also take advantage of our new digital system by using your own earphones, to plug directly into the pocket-sized body packs. If you prefer to use the T switch on your hearing aid, please borrow an induction loop aerial. We can also offer assisted listening on backstage tours. Where possible we provide British Sign Language interpreted performances. We also have a Portable Hearing Loop which offers versatile, desktop assistance for people with hearing loss who use telecoil-equipped hearing instruments or cochlear implants.
Personal support We operate an Assisted Access Scheme for those who require somebody to be present in order to assist them to readily access theatre shows and, as such, we allow members to buy a seat for themselves at the standard rate and one for an assistant at no cost. A CredAbility Access Card with the +1 symbol entitles the cardholder to membership of our Assisted Access scheme.
