Support us Derby Theatre is a registered charity working to produce and support the very best in theatre-making in the region. We provide inspiring opportunities for young people and communities to engage with the arts, whether for fun or as part of their education. We also support local people developing careers in the arts. We are mostly funded through sales of tickets and grants from our funders. This money allows us to do excellent work, but, like most charities, we also need public support in order to work with everyone, young and old, who can benefit from the theatre’s activities. If you would like to support us further, please make a donation, however small, when booking your tickets. Alternatively, you could add to our donation box which stands in Derby Theatre’s foyer.

Thank you for your support.

Welcome to our autumn season As the nights start to draw in, I hope you will join us for some of the treats we have in store. The two jewels in the season are Stephen Sondheim’s multi-award-winning musical Sweeney Todd and our magical Christmas delight Alice in Wonderland. I’m delighted to be presenting Sweeney Todd with Mercury Theatre Colchester and welcoming back Daniel Buckroyd to direct. Expect Victorian high drama, a fantastic musical score and a talented ensemble cast, as the demon barber of Fleet Street comes to Derby. As with previous Derby Theatre Christmas productions, such as Cinderella and A Christmas Carol, our production of Alice in Wonderland will showcase a talented team of actor-musicians who will sing, dance and play music live on stage, all bringing the story to life. Match these two productions with our host of exciting theatre from the best companies around and you can benefit from a Main House Season Ticket: see 4 shows in the Main House for just £52. Our Studio Theatre is the place to head for cutting-edge Fringe Theatre and for the first time we’re offering a Studio Season Ticket – pick 4 shows from the season for just £28 – a bargain for some of the best contemporary theatre from around the UK. This Christmas, we will once again be collecting at the door for Plus One – our scheme which allows young people in care and care leavers to see shows, access drama workshops and experience the arts. You can donate at Box Office, online or via the bucket collections at Christmas – we hope you can help us help those young people have a special Christmas. As always, we welcome your feedback on all the shows – tweet us, email us, or drop us a line. I look forward to welcoming you to Derby Theatre this autumn.

Director Elizabeth Newman “Elizabeth Newman ramps up the drama and her cast excel in a potent version of the classic comedy” The Guardian (on Private Lives)

Friday 17 February – Saturday 11 March 2017

“Yeh. An’ it might be worthless in the end. But I had a choice. I chose, me. Because of what you’d given me. I had a choice.” Frank has almost given up. Bored of teaching undergraduate English students, despairing of his ambition to be a poet, he reflects morosely on his life. And then Rita walks in. A 29-year-old married hairdresser who has decided to take control of her life and earn herself an education. With Rita’s brash honesty and Frank’s deep intellect, each inspires the other as they both begin to wake up to life in their own way. Willy Russell’s award-winning and hugely popular comedy drama is an uplifting tale of self-discovery, where we witness how the power of choice comes through education.

BETRAYAL

Director Lekan Lawal

By Harold Pinter

Friday 17 March – Saturday 1 April

A bitter comedy and gripping story of infidelity. Emma and Jerry meet two years on from the end of their adulterous affair. Emma has betrayed her husband Robert. Jerry has betrayed his best friend Robert. But Robert has secrets of his own. As time peels backwards charting a seven-year love affair, a complicated and intricate web of lies and deceit is revealed, making us question who is betraying whom. Inspired, in part, by Harold Pinter’s affair with BBC presenter Joan Bakewell and written in 1978, the first production went on to win the Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Play, as well as being adapted into an Academy Award and BAFTA-nominated film. Harold Pinter was a playwright, screen writer, director, political activist, actor and one of the 20th century’s most influential dramatists. He wrote thirty-two plays, twenty-two screenplays and directed thirty-six theatre productions. He received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2005, and was awarded the Companion of Honour in 2002. His many awards include the Moliere D’Honneur for Lifetime Achievement, the European Theatre Award and the Legion d’Honneur.

This Might Hurt A new comedy by John Godber

Tuesday 20 – Saturday 24 September

When tough actor Jack Skipton returns from filming to care for his ageing aunt, he has no idea what he is letting himself in for. Jack's story is hilarious and heart-breaking, as he and his aunt take on the health service in order to get the right diagnosis, and the right care; as he goes from actor to carer to drugs consultant, and she refuses to admit that she is even ill! Told in a bold physical theatre style and with breathtaking grit and honesty, Godber's take on our health service is both tender and true, as he investigates what we deserve, and what we receive.

Written and directed by John Godber

“Funny, touching, affectionate and insightful” Derby Telegraph (on John Godber’s production of April in Paris)

No Woman’s Land

Friday 11 November, 8pm

Saturday 12 November, 8pm

There's always chance. There's always choice. You could be elsewhere. Anywhere but here.

In 1945, Ildiko’s grandmother, Lucia, expelled from her home, walked 220 miles through the fractured landscape of Europe. In 2015, Zoo Indigo retraced her footsteps, crossing borders, bleeding, crying, carrying their flat-pack children.

Anna is stranded. Beth came for a think. C just wants some kip. Three women meet by chance late at night. None of them really want to be there, yet none of them leave. With only loose change, some booze and a dodgy carrot at their disposal, will any of them find their way home? A darkly comic drama which challenges our understanding of home, purpose and charity. The part each actor plays is determined each performance by the roll of a dice, exploring the impact of chance and choice on the outcome of our lives.

No Woman’s Land is a darkly humorous stagger through past and present landscapes, exploring the post-apocalypse of 1945, migration, home and displacement. Stepping out of the 1920’s German Kabarett, the performers walk on treadmills immersed in a digital environment as they explore their own and Lucia’s journey.
