35 YEARS NOT TAXING FOR THE OLD TAX HOUSE by Abby Llorico Communications Intern

F

rom its simple storefront on Veterans Memorial Parkway to its unassuming name, there is nothing flashy about The Old Tax House. Ever since its humble beginnings 35 years ago, the business has focused less on the drama and more in the detail, a method appreciated by all who seek quality service tax service. “Tax preparation is a partnership, I think that’s one of the key factors [of our success],” said Lisa Parres, general manager. “We do our very best to meet the client where they are, and meet their needs as they see fit.” Though it is a fact that the majority share of the tax preparation market in most towns is held by chain stores, that is not the case in O’Fallon. “We are the largest prep service in O’Fallon, and have been for many many years,” Parres said of The Old Tax House, which also specializes in small business accounting. “I think we’ve been very fortunate; our customers really are key as far as that’s concerned. The majority of our clients are repeat clients, and we have a tremendous amount of referrals.”

The role that the community has played in keeping The Old Tax House at the top of the market has not been lost on them, and they work to maintain their presence in the daily lives of O’Fallon residents. “We’ve been a part of the O’Fallon community and been kind of ‘keeping it in the O’ long before that was a phrase. We’ve always supported local organizations, schools, different community organizations, we’ve always been a participant… and I think our community has in turn thanked us by continuing to support us.” The Old Tax House has called O’Fallon home since 1977, and has seen a lot of changes in both the town and the people it serves. “People want things faster, and convenience matters. We give our clients options.” Clients of the Old Tax House can choose to sit down with their preparer or they can drop their tax return information off at the office and pick it up when it is prepared. With an increase in popularity of online tax preparation software, the Old Tax House created a detailed online survey to allow people to provide necessary information to an Old Tax House preparer from the comfort of their own home.

The average, convenience-craving consumer does not have time in the day to keep up with current tax code, which is why it is a full time job at Old Tax House. “Tax law changes every year… There are changes, additions, and sometimes just entirely new legislations that have passed. We spend a lot of time and a lot of effort making sure that we stay up to date on tax law changes, and understand that training for our employees is key,” said Parres. “When you come in and sit down with us, we are doing everything that we can to get you every legitimate deduction. Getting you the larger refund or the lowest tax liability is our goal.” Though the preparers at The Old Tax House pride themselves on their education, they see the importance of education their clients as well. “At the end of the tax prep process, we are doing our very best to make sure that we are explaining the differences and the process so that the client understands what their tax liability is and how they got to it,” said Parres. “We really do go out of our way to provide personal service and do our best for each and every client. I think that is difficult in some respects when you’re dealing with large volume, but we have continued

OCTOBER 2012 | BUSINESS CONNECTION | 5

Welcome to the last quarter of 2012, I can’t believe that the Holiday Shopping season is only a month away (for those of us who don’t wait until December 15th anyway). This is continuing to be a phenomenal year for our O’Fallon Chamber. Hopefully by the time I write to you next month the Chamber will be conducting business in our new office and prepping for our ribbon cutting on November 9th. Speaking of phenomenal, the Chamber welcomed 26 new members to our organization in September! While looking at the numbers is great, what does that really mean for you and the Chamber? Well, for you, it means that our organization is crawling with new businesses to network. New people to learn about and new people to listen to what you’re all about so that we can all be on the lookout for referrals. It means that we have new like-minded people to exchange ideas with, to be a source of information, and a colleague to bounce ideas off. New memberships also mean that our organization is fulfilling its mission. When we grow the number of businesses that we work for, we are also helping to strengthen the economic vitality of our community; remember a rising tide raises all boats. So now I’d like to ask a question of our 26 new members and our 510 current members are you getting the most out of your membership? There are so many ways to get involved in the Chamber and reap the benefits of membership. • ATTEND! The O’Fallon Chamber has at least 2 networking events each month, and 3 every other month. Our Morning Schmooze, Membership Meetings, and After Hours are scheduled at different times to accommodate everyone’s calendar. • SHARE LEADS! The Chamber has 3 active Leads Groups which meet two times a month to build their relationships so that referrals can be passed. We often say that joining a leads group is like expanding your sales force by 15 for free. • COMMITTEES! Currently we have committees meeting to plan the 3rd Annual Trivia Night and Inaugural Casino Night. Are events not your thing? How about joining us monthly for the Legislative Lunches to learn about hot topics in our area, or becoming an Ambassador to welcome new businesses to our area and serve as a goodwill host at our luncheons. • BECOME A BOARD MEMBER! All members who have been active for 1 year are invited to apply to be a Board member. We are always looking for new people with new ideas and a different prospective to keep our organization thriving. Our Chamber has a great website filled with information on all of these topics and a great staff who are happy to get our membership plugged in. Visit the site, ofallonchamber.org or give the office a call, 636-240-1818 to find out how to get the greatest return from your Chamber investment. Until next month, Keep the Shot Outs Coming! to make that a priority. And when you make something a priority consistently, I think that it shows, and I think that that’s really been a great benefit for us.” To appeal to new clients to The Old Tax House, Parres believes the facts speak for themselves.

“I think that anyone new to the community, when they take a look at our website or take a look at any of the advertising that we may do, any place who’s survived as a small business for 35 years: I think that really does speak volumes,” said Parres. “To stay in business for 35 years and to be the largest service

in O’Fallon and certainly one of the larger ones in St. Charles County as a whole, I think that has to say something to potential clients.” The Old Tax House is located at 8810 Veterans Memorial Parkway in O’Fallon. Call 636-240-7706 or visit www.OldTaxHouse.com for more information.

WORKSHOPS HELP MAKE THE MOST OUT OF NETWORKING

T

he O’Fallon Chamber of Commerce will host a series of Networking Works! workshops to teach local business people not just about the importance of networking, but how to get the most out of the networking they are already doing. The workshops will take place once a month at Staybridge Suites in O’Fallon, MO from October through February. Pete Brown of Sandler Training will lead the workshops with a focus on becoming a more confident and successful networker. “So many tend to believe that networking is really just handing out business cards over lunch. In truth, that is a good way to meet people, but maybe not as effective as having strategic goals associated with how you meet people, why you meet people and how to make networking actually work for your business,” said Erin Williams, President and CEO of the O’Fallon Chamber of Commerce. “These workshops will give participants not just an elevator speech, but the knowledge to build their ‘personal board of directors’ and how to build relationships that are mutually beneficial so that there is truly a net of people working for and with one another.” The event is open to members and non-members of the O’Fallon Chamber of Commerce, and registration for one workshop as well as for the whole series is available, and includes a continental breakfast. For more information and to register for the classes visit www.OFallonChamber.org/networking-works or call 636240-1818.

For the third consecutive year, State Farm Insurance Co has generously provided the St. Charles County Ambulance District with one of their ‘Safe Neighbors’grants. Through these funds, the Ambulance District is able to offer its Halloween Safety program to families in the county. As in years past, they will provide free glow-inthedark bracelets to children to wear on Halloween night while trick-or-treating — a fun way to make kids more visible to drivers as well as other pedestrians. New this year, free reflective candy bags also will be available (while supplies last). Bracelets and bags can be obtained from select State Farm agents’ offices and the ambulance district’s headquarters facility throughout October. A list of participating agents can be found at www.SCCAD.com. In addition, the Ambulance District will partner with St. Charles City-County Library District to offer a series of Halloween Safety presentations for children & parents. Along with trick-or-treat safety tips, the presentations will include a tour of an ambulance and story time. Please note that advance registration is requested for the presentations. Parents may register their children at www. YOURANSWERPLACE.org.
